  • The 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric is ready to take on all EVs. With a 415 kms / 258 Mile range, this sub-compact SUV should have no problem fitting into anyones life. Its the best of all worlds, an electric vehicle and an SUV. Customers interested in a Tesla Model 3 should definitely look at the Kona EV.

    I got my Kona electric in Fresno, California a little over a month ago and it is without a doubt a FUN car to drive! I won't waste time yapping about Hyundai's build quality and superior warranty that while seldom needed, they DO honor without question or hassle. As it pertains to the Kona EV one thing people should know is the battery comes with a LIFETIME warranty against defects and such. Of course all batteries have an anticipated reduction in range over time, but if the Kona battery is like the Tesla with it's liquid thermal management, users are only looking at about 5% loss over 100,000 miles. Put into perspective this means the original EPA 258 mile range drops to 245 miles - except it's not that simple. You see, astute Kona owners have already discovered the ACTUAL battery size is around 69 kWh or approximately 7% greater than factory spec, or about 276 miles range if charged to 100%, but even here it's not that simple. After charging to 100 % the other day my Kona showed an anticipated range of 291 miles, and since I've been averaging better than 4.2 miles per kWh baseline, with a "personal best" of 5.8 kWh, the car could actually exceed 300 miles on a single charge!
    How is such magic possible? Well, it has more to do with where the driving is done, than how. EV's in general get astounding range when operated on city streets where stop-n-go traffic is the norm, and speeds generally average between 40-50 mph. The Kona can easily reach 5 miles per kWh in town driving unless one gets carried away with the go pedal. Of course heat and AC will also decrease range, but if cycled on and off as needed, range can beat 4.0 kWh no problem. A note about what the car shows when one turns on the AC or heat. If fully charged, turning on heat or AC will show a decrease in range of as much as 30 miles - but this is illusory. What the car is displaying is the ANTICIPATED reduction in range if the heat is left on for the duration of the charge. Turning heat or AC off after a few minutes shows the expected range to jump back up to within a few miles of where it would have been had the climate control not been activated. As the car's battery depletes, turning on AC may show only a mile or two drop in anticipated range and this is because the car "knows" it's only got, say, another 70 miles of range, so even with the AC on the whole time, it will only reduce range by about 2 miles.
    Cold weather is hard on EVs. When cold, expect to see anticipated range drop faster than actual distance traveled, though this can be mitigated by how one chooses to drive. Using the ECON mode and limiting throttle excursions (even though it's fun to blast away from traffic lights like you just lit an afterburner), I've found I can balance out the slight loss in range due to cold, during my commute home when the temperature is warmer.
    Highway driving is not an EVs strong suit either. The reason is because speeds are higher and sustained, pulling more current than around town, and there are no regular slow-downs where regen can add something back to the battery. I have managed to get around 4.8-5 miles per kWh on the highway driving slower than traffic in general, but I have a hunch there is very little if any reduction in range driving 65 mph versus 55 mph over a 20 mile highway run. Better to uses speed to limit time spent on the freeway, in order to get into some restorative stop and go traffic!
    I've read the Kona electric will accelerate to 60 mph in "around" 7.4 seconds. I've also read a review where they measured it going 0-60 in 6.4 seconds which seems a lot more in line with my own experience. For the sake of safety I operate in ECON mode 90% of the time and only use regular mode from time to time when I want to impress ICE drivers with the fact that the Kona EV can outrun ANY of them between stoplights! Sure, a 700 hp Hellcat might reel me in at the last instant, but nothing shy of about 400 hp is going to accelerate with the Kona and this is specifically due to the massive, almost 300 lb-ft of torque that comes online the instant the go-pedal is mashed! Give enough time and distance, high horsepower cars will overtake the Kona, but in "stoplight racing" the only thing I expect will beat it will be a Tesla - another electric. I really "never" use "Sport mode" because it's simply too much power for the entire car and tires. I tried Sport mode while moving at 30 mph on a section of back road, just pressing the eletrons to about 50% caused the front tires to chirp, break traction, and spin, lifting the front end up as if the car was trying to launch skyward! I tried it going stoplight to stoplight and decided it was too dangerous! Even just 50% torque (as shown on the gauge) causes the car to launch like it's coming off a catapult and hit speeds so fast, one must instantly let off and stand on the brakes! We're talking half-mile or so distances.
    A point to mention is if one does want to "launch" the best way is to come to a full stop, then pull and hold the left paddle (or use it to stop in the first place). When the paddle is released the car does not roll as is common with most cars and with the Kona EV after stopping using the foot brake. If the foot brake is used, the car will roll forward like other cars when easing off the brake so one can sort of roll with the traffic, which means sitting with the right foot on the brake to hold the car still. By using the paddle, the car sits perfectly still with no paddle and no pressure on the foot brake, so you can have your foot ready to go on the accelerator for when the light changes. Since I know it's an embarrassingly one-sided contest, I generally hesitate until I see the ICE cars begin to pull away, then I feed in the electrons and the Kona is GONE! I let off passing through 55 mph generally, and begin coasting to the next light with zero regen, and here come the ICE drivers hard on it to catch me and blow past as they're already having to stand on their brakes for the next group of traffic! meanwhile, I start adding in regen to slow and bring the Kona to a stop. Level 3 regen is seldom used because really drags the car to a stop quickly, so most often I'm using 2 arrows of regen, then do a full-pull on the left paddle about 1.5 car-lengths back to bring the Kona to a halt without ever moving my foot from over the accelerator.
    So far I am VERY impressed with the Kona EV! Already here in the Fresno area I'm seeing the Kona SEL electric listed for $37K before discounts, and the tax credit which makes it HIGHLY competitive to other electrics - none of which have a nearly 300 mile range for that price! The Tesla Model 3 can go around 310 miles if one pays the $5,000 vig over the base price to get a 75 kWh battery, then of course another $2K if one wants the car in a color other than Black, or +$2,500 for red, and another +$1,500 for white leather interior (my Kona Limited came with the off-white leather interior). Plus the real game-changer is Hyundai's ability and willingness to back their car with an extreme warranty.

      Richard Kilibreaux WOW! Now that’s a comment. Thanks so much giving everyone an owners insight on the Kona EV. Sure would be nice to have one now where we live in Canada. Our fuel prices just hit $1.69 per litre which is over $6.40 per gallon and that’s for regular. What car did you have before this?

      Bong Lim, FYI, another thing that’s really promising about the Kona EV is that it’s extremely efficient, according to Bjorn Nyland. It appears to get around 4.8 miles/KWh, which is even slight more efficient than my Prius Prime at 4.7. Of course, the Prius Prime has a super-tiny battery - about 6ish KWh for pure-EV operation (8.8KWh raw capacity). My EV-driving colleagues, in their Teslas, LEAFs, and Volts, report numbers more in the 2.5-3.8 miles per KWh.

    • @redbaron6805
      @redbaron6805 5 лет назад +3

      Most people that thought that would become an issue, found it really wasn't an issue once they started driving the car. The speed is already displayed right at your peripheral vision, so people that have driven the car who thought they would hate the center display, actually found it not to be an issue at all.
      Interestingly, even Jaguar only has the HUD in the most expensive package, it does not come standard. If that is a feature people really want, I figure more car makers will start including them. My concern would be, once the novelty has worn off, would you really use it.
      On long trips, once I set the cruise control, I really don't need to have the speed displayed in my line of vision full time.

      TrueDesireHD this is subjective of course, but if you look at more desirable sporty designs that can be incorporated into an original shape that’s not contrived from a shared ICE chassis and body, those designs don’t have a grill. Essentially those original EV designs don’t have an engine, so you can have a very low hood height such as all current Tesla’s, Corvette, 1992-95 Mazda RX-7, upcoming EVs.

    I'm lucky enough to own a Kona and love it. The HUD and "autopliot" equivalent are great features and make commuting traffic a breeze. The efficiency is amazing thanks to those wheels and aero facia. Since I got mine (Aug) I have had 3 notes left on my screen asking if I would like to sell it!! Never had that with any car in the past! My 64Kw Kona gets 550km range in commuting traffic (50kph) and at max legal highway speeds (110kph) on long trips it still gets 480km!! Only omission in this review was no mention of the HUD that comes with the high spec version.

      That sounds amazing. Did I not mention the HUD? Thought I did when talking about the interior. Yes the aero wheels and grill increase efficiency but I'd trade a little range for a normal looking grill. I think its a challenge for all EV's. I just find it looks like its missing something. Maybe they can paint one on like on race cars, hehe, that would be interesting. You must be in Europe if you already got one, how much was yours? In Canada we only get the 64Kw version. The Bolt(at least mine) has the ability to be programmed to your charging and driving. As a result I get 300 to 330 miles on regen down Palomar Mountain into Escondido after overnight charge with provided 120 volt EVSE (which can be easily converted to a high current Level 2 charger. I also get seat of the pants 0-60 in 5. I love my lightning Bolt every time i see a challenger(like a Corvette Z-06) in my rear view mirror, or just side by side with a Ferrari(boy was he surprised!

Personally, I think the standard packed options and the clean style interior makes up a lot for the few exterior flaws. Let's not forget, this thing has 200hp! Really like the range, this is for me the most crucial factor to go electric and there are also government subsidies here in the Netherlands which make it very attractive to drive this EV. How aero can the wheels be if two of them are spinning backwards? If you look close you will see that the wheels on the drivers side have the dimpled flap part of the wheel facing forward at the top. They face toward the rear on the passenger side. On one side it's sucking air in and pushing it under the car and the other is blowing it out, the wheels need to be symmetrical to do any good.

    • @redbaron6805
      @redbaron6805 5 лет назад +1

      I doubt it. Making EV's AWD takes dual motors. And making dual motor EV's is actually complicated when they use PM DC motors like I'm sure Hyundai is using in this one.
      The problem with dual motors is unless they use a AC Induction motor in the front, and a DC Permanent Magnet motor in the rear, you have to run both motors full time, which kills the range.
      Which is why the Jaguar I-Pace, despite having a 90kWh battery, only gets around 234 miles of range, they used dual PM motors.
      Tesla is the only one that can do this without a significant range penalty, and the Induction motors on the Model S and X mean the dual motor AWD versions are actually more efficient than the single motor versions.

    I priced this car out this weekend in Kitchener Ontario as I was interested in all the money I could save by not leasing a internal combustion car. After we did the numbers, I was shocked to find out that it was 1,100.00/mth on a no down payment 3 year lease. The residual was set at unbelievable 38% after 3 years and adding insult to injury was a 5.7 % lease rate. Any fuel savings were quickly eaten up by the horrible residual and the high financing rates. Buyers also need to consider some additional fees required with this vehicle which is to buy and install a fast home charger as well. Range anxiety comes with all current electric cars as they can loose up to 30 to 40%% of their range at -20 to -30 degrees celsius. The thought of driving without the heater on to reserve range does not sound like a good option in the middle of winter! The Khona electric has no all wheel drive option available at th is time so for me this a deal breaker. Another concern is what happens when you buy this car and in the next 12 months they come out with batteries that charge fully in 10 minutes.

    • @EverydayReviews2022
      @EverydayReviews2022  5 лет назад +1

    Any compact SUV without a fold flat passenger seat is not very smart and off my list. You can't even get a small surfboard inside this thing. Also wondering does this car allow you run the A/C for hours inside while parked with lights off? How about while parked and charging? I agree that the grill and wheels are nowhere as nice and doubt they return that much more efficiency. That exterior color is very nice though. A side thought/question, but wonder if would ever be a good idea for these cars to move the spare tire to the frunk and offer a very deep storage in the back where the spare was.

They should fit a dummy tailpipe that emits puffs of smoke, and have a speaker system that makes coughing noises when you try to pull away on a cold day. what gets me about EV is the "maintenance" cost. I know there are no oil changes etc, but you still have to bring it back to the dealership at least once a year, for an "inspection". if you don't you are risking the manufacturer denying warranty claims. and the cost for these "inspections" cost about the same as an annual service on an ICE, where they actually service your car. also, currently EV still cost too much compare to their ICE counterparts. without government rebate, it will take a long time/many miles to make financial sense. and EV are a bit like mobile phones, almost every year they will make small improvements on the car, like bigger battery, for example. then you will want the latest and greatest. and then there is the depreciation, ouch.

    Now for the prize question.
    How long would you need to drive it to amortize the at least 10k+ premium you pay over the gas version? EVs are not money savers ( we usually don't lease over here like in north america ) and the grid still isn't running on 100% renewable energy in my country... in fact it's just around 40% this year with maybe 1% increase every year or every other year. As long as that isn't 100% zero emissions is a myth.
    As long as the batteries are expensive af and they still haven't provided a solution how they want to manage all the waste products you have at the end of the cars life cycle i'm not jumping on the EV train yet even though i would really love to.

    • @norboost
      @norboost 5 лет назад +1

      Not sure about the US but over here we have huge incentives to drive EVs. The gas version here is actually only $2000 cheaper, and I've estimated my family will save $3700/year switching from a i30 to a Kona EV. So for us it's a no brainer.

      @@blownb310 Let me rephrase: The batteries are not visible as they may be in other manufacturers (see picture). *_Brian, that will stop as soon as the dealers get more Kona EVs to sell. Right now the car is so hot and in such short supply that dealers are charging up to $10,000 over MSRP._*

    Truly a modest daily driver without any pretense (unlike Tesla) and a formula for widespread application and success (unlike the elitist Tesla)....A car for which you can make an economic argument...tough to spend $48 K on a Model 3 to save pennies on gas....

    I love the grille. I cant stand how audi and Mercedes haven't dropped the grille on ev's. It will be laughed at in 20 years
