This car definitely a major WIN for Hyundai!
I bought a 2019 Kona Electric Ultimate June 1, 2019. I love it. Ride is comfortable; power is amazing!; interior is comfy. A full charge starts me out with 295-325 miles. It varies I do not know why. Probably has something to do with the end charging cycle and how it determines a full charge. I am getting a good 270 actual miles in a mix of city/rural driving daily. Normally I can charge up on Saturday and go the entire week without recharging until the following Saturday. With my electric rates at home it costs me about $5.25 to charge for the week. with a level 2 charger. I highly recommend checking out this Hyunda Kona Electric if you are considering buying an electric car. Currently they are only available in CA, OR and MD. I actually drove from NC to MD to buy mine. Was worth the road trip.
I’m planning to buy it
Tom May yeah I love Kona ! Welcome to the team ;)
I was looking for one in NC too... now I know why I can't find one locally.
I see 2019 for mid to upper 30's. Question does it have battery management?
Hey! An electric SUV that isn't overstyled! And looks normal! I love it!
Well... That isn't over styled that badly. But I partly agree, it's not that bad!
Didn’t that happen in 2014 with the model X?

I personally get annoyed with cars that pretend to have “cooled” seats when they’re actually just ventilated seats.
Check out the Hyundai i30n Korean cars have changed for the good
Yeah both Hyundai and Kia (same company now I believe) are making really good cars now, across the board. Definitely worth checking out since they're still cheaper and give you more good technology for the price than pretty much anybody else.
@@vernonprice5986 they've been the same for like 20+ years, at least the drive train for sure
Brad Haines Literally the opposite of that is true. Everything Hyundai and Kia make now are all new, all the cars, all the technology, all the mechanicals, all the interiors, everything is new. How is the hybrid drivetrain in the Ioniq and the Niro 20 years old again? Oh right, it's not. How is the twin turbo V6 drivetrain in the Stinger GT 20 years old again? Oh right, it's not.
If you're not capable of grasping reality and working within its confines, maybe you shouldn't be commenting on youtube.
@@vernonprice5986 you misunderstood me. i meant they've been the same company. their cars are great and they're leaders in car tech to the point i persuaded my parents into buying a fully loaded Santa Fe sport last year.

I like the way it looks, a futuristic front end but the rest of the car is not too weird looking like a Prime or Leaf.
The rest of the car is the same as the gas version
@@teslasnek To me that is a good thing. I'm not a fan of weird looking hybrid and electric cars, just because it has a battery doesn't mean that it has to be ugly. The subtle difference of the front end on this looks ok to me, I like the trim on the front that connects the headlights - it looks better than that open vent on the gas powered one.
@@harrismi7 Oh, I totally agree! I just realized I misread your comment lol. I thought you said you didn't like the styling, but I see now you said you're glad that it doesn't look weird. I agree with you!
It's too bad but the car has over a 2 year waiting list due to a battery shortage. Kona uses batteries from LG Chemicals, and LG is not enough to crank out enough batteries for all their customers. So this car is going to have limited sales unless they solve the battery shortage problem.
XP-8 TIM the new leaf doesn’t look too bad. It looks like a mini murano
Korean motors in 2019 is like Japanese motors in the 80s-90s, everyone would put a "yeah but its a honda (etc)" on it but today nobody thinks twice about a Japanese car. Im impressed by Hyundai-kia and i think people will get past this whole "yeah but its a kia" thing in the next 5 years.
Not at all, as long as it has a hyundai/ kia badge people will see it as a povo pack car for the cheapskates of the automotive world.
The stinger gr already set where they're aiming to be...
I think in order to get out of that, they need to have a couple sporty cars. A couple of electric roadsters cars would fix that. Similar to Japanese cars in the 90s.

Friday is a green car
You guys rock! I've wanted a Canadian review of this.
Loved seeing the quick back to back comparisons of a lot of EV options out there right now. Great job guys!
Great review as always! The Kona EV also is my favorite EV so far! During the press event in Germany we got them up to 500+ km on one charge while driving around 50mph on the highway. Superb car! :)
This is serious. I don't use my car for daily commute here in Europe, only for visiting family, the occasional mall and the yearly 3000km driving holiday. 500 km at 50mph still uses more power than drafting a lorry at 56-60mph, so this would work. Remember Germany was the cutting edge of EVs in the 90's, specialized aerodynamic lightweight cars and Ni-Cd batteries. When you get going again, 500km is on a bad day.
Ok
I call BS. They don't have any miles in Germany, only kilometers.
You guys are currently doing the best EV reviews I've seen recently. My one suggestion when you cover EVs is to talk about thermal management of the batteries. Who uses active vs. passive, liquid vs. air? Other than that, keep doing what you're doing.
This was the first Straight Pipes video I ever watched, back in 2019. I had heard about the Kona EV and wanted to learn more. I became a fan and watch all the videos as they come out.

Awesome review guys. I've got a Kona Electric in the UK and it truly is the best EV out there....overall.
Oh wow how is the range??
And how much did you pay for your car?
250 to 320 miles depending on weather and driving style.
£37,000 GBP before government incentives
Or buy the non-electric, and have WAAAAY lower true cost to own monthly, because electric vehicle resale is still absolutely horrific. Nobody trusts the used expensive batteries, and they become obsolete way too quick. You can still get $25K for a 2001 Corvette that was $40K new. But a $35K Fiat 500e you are lucky to get $10K for a few years later, as nobody wants that little 80 mile range anymore.

I thought Montreal traffic was the worst. Until I drove for a week in Toronto. It's spectacularly bad. Legit, it's frigging Art at this point. God have mercy on your souls.
Worst commute in North America and 6th worst in the entire world!
I live in New York now which has its reputation for traffic and bad drivers, but there is NOTHING like the 401 across the GTA during rush hour. Six lanes of traffic in each direction and no place to go. Has to be experienced to be believed.
Honestly, I am so happy that you guys do these comparisons. Our next vehicle for my wife in a few years will be EV and seeing the progression just a year makes is great. Even with the current Ontario government getting rid of a good chunk of the EV rebate, this is still going to be a steal! Over 400 km to a charge is all anyone needs to commute.

Thank you guys for another great video! Looking forward to Friday :)
My Kona Electric is being built and is due for delivery in Canada in February! Super stoked. The one feature I wish they would implement over the UK/Norway versions of the vehicle is the Blue Link (app support). It's a small piece, but it seems like that one thing that's missing from this vehicle comparative to other EVs.
I did hear a rumour though, that the Blue Link feature may be released on the North American Konas; fingers crossed!
I don't see why they wouldn't offer BlueLink support in Canada because my '19 Veloster Turbo has BlueLink, and I live in Canada. Odds are, BlueLink will in fact work after all.
As an aside, BlueLink is pretty much useless to anyone with a manual since you can't use remote start. You can still turn on lights and unlock the door, but the app is so slow on my iPhone when connecting to the car that it becomes an inconvenience.
@@iandegraaf9842 the reason they didn't release bluelink with the Ioniq EV is that the software hadn't been modified for EV features apparently. The good news is that they have now announced that the Canadian Kona EV will have BlueLink!

I think you guys will much appreciate the Kia NIRO EV once you get your hands on it. Like the interior will have less hard plastics and more soft touch. Its got way more space. The suspension and ride will be matched as its also running on a similar suspension setup. It as well will offer level 3 capabilities like the Kona (duh Hyundai). I personally prefer the appearance on the Niro over the Kona. Also I missed it or didn't see it, the hood in the front, did they slip in a Frunk?
No frunk, but at least it has the same cargo space in the hatch section as the gas one unlike my Ford Focus EV: the battery takes up half my trunk space lol.
Love the Kona but unneccessary dents in the front
@@ismaelreyes7268 The dents are ducts passing a slit of air on the outside of the front wheel. The reason for this is to calm the turbulent air in front of the tire that otherwise would contribute a lot to turbulence down the sides. It reduces drag around 5% So these ducts are very different to the fake cooling air intakes for the disc brakes that were popular in the 90'.

Did you end up getting the car. How is the driving experience and knowledge in the winter
What. I was looking at the Bolt video yesterday and was like..I need these guys to put out one for the Kona Electric, and wow, did you deliver fast :).
I like the Kona but must admit that I dream of a Model 3. I would consider buying the Kona if it had more legroom in the rear and the price difference to a Model 3 is going to be substantial. However, this car is just too small if you plan on using the rear seats for adults or long legged teenagers from time to time. The Kia Niro has a bit better rear space than the Kona but it doesn't please my eyes as much. I'm currently leaning towards reserving a Model 3 soon and meanwhile keep an eye on what else will be available within a year or two from now.

Great review, guys! I was jonezing for you to tackle the Niro EV next, but now that I've seen the 2020 Soul EV, go straight to that! I'm convinced Hyundai/Kia offer the biggest bang for the buck for EVs these days.
I do wish that in every (normal car, not sports car) review you touched briefly on a few of the basics like - Headroom, legroom, cargo, noise levels at highway speed, etc.
Model 3 is a bargain as half the price of the X/S and does about the same things. It is the Ferrari/Apple of the EV market. Plus over the air updates keeps the car modern!
No, for only one reason, charging network. You can drive a Tesla wherever you want. You cannot even go to Las Vegas from either Southern California or Phoenix in any other EV.
I've seen LA to Vegas Bolt videos, so it is possible.
@@dansanger5340 Possible, but Bolt takes over twice as long to put miles back on the car while fast charging and thats when you can find a proper working charger that isn't being used. For road trips, the charging network for non-Tesla cars is still very, very weak. It's there at least and a start.
Or get a diesel or hybrid like a normal person, and not worry about having to plan your route along specific paths and meal times around charging.
Maybe in US. In other parts of the world it really doesnt make any difference whatsoever. Also from consumer stand point, a Hyundai is a far better choice: you can repair your car pretty much everywhere (if it's a mechanical problem) and there are plenty of dealerships. On the other hand, there's only ONE Tesla dealership in my country. Also This one looks like a proper car, with proper car interior, and not some futuristi useless bullshit like the Model3. Real buttons, normal dashboard. It is also AVAILABLE and costs less. In normal traffic, i don't give a shit about having a supercar like acceleration.
Yes we get it Tesla is amazing .. but most people don’t want to spend $70,000. From what I’ve seen here you’ll get similar range and a very comfortable car for half the price. To me that’s amazing 😉
LMAO @ the guy in the convertible Merc throwing his hands up when Jakub was driving slow.
Thank you for this complete and fun (canadian) review of the kona ev ! This car is the best of its class. I'm not sure that model 3 is a direct competitor because of its bigger size. But if you're looking to the price tag it could make sense. Big pros to the model 3, supercharger network. Big cons the trunk is not pratical to load with big items and there's no enough buttons on the dashboard to my (certainly old) taste ! I hope you guys are planning to review the upcoming soon stepbrother of the kona aka Kia e-Niro.
Straight Pipes.... providing bu**hole air since 2018
I am totally a fan of this car. I think it is the best EV (available soon) at a similar price point to a model 3. I am very impressed by the range of this vehicle for its chassis and class (258 miles of range w/ 64 kWh battery). This is comparable to Model 3 mid range of 260 miles (with an assumed 60 kWh pack). I like the look of the front pattern more than a grill and it makes the car more efficient. The interior looks nice but nothing too fancy. Tesla is still a decade ahead in infotainment and OTA updates that make it better all the time but at least this car has Android/Apple car play. I think Tesla's interior is still better overall but this one is nice and has a normal car feel to it.
The mid range model 3 is still quicker accelerating, higher top speed, faster charging, and better handling (I haven't driven a Kona but the model 3 I had a test drive in had insanely responsive handing and was fun to drive). All model 3s come with self-driving hardware standard no matter what you pay for the car so you always have the option to buy autopilot/self-driving at a later date and have it activated in your car literally overnight.
Can't wait for your model 3 review. Make sure you get used to the touch screen before you give a verdict. Many people are quick to judge it if they review it without using it much first. And most importantly, make sure you review a recently manufactured one. Tesla does not use the model year system. They make changes to their cars whenever a new fix or feature is ready.
@15:25 = pissed off guy in Mercedes Convertible. Cool it dude, awesome car review in progress.
I would buy one of these provided it has an awesome heater in it for those cold Western New York winters!
Oh no. Now I want one 😊
My model 3 is available for you guys. :)
Hit then up in e-mail!
Great review guys, greetings!
Multi link rear suspension is under rated, I'm glad you pointed that out. I'm definitely impressed by this car over all
Oh damn. If only we still had the incentive for EV's, this would be my next car, lol.
You are not i the USA since no incentives are gone in the USA. What other country would take out EV incentives?
Tax incentives for Tesla get cut in half starting next year, is that what you mean? They will not be not gone, just cut in half and it hasn't happened yet, and lawmakers are trying to change the law to not punish early movers in the EV space like the current law does.
0ooTheMAXXoo0 TheStraightPipes and a lot of their viewers live in Ontario, Canada. Recently our new provincial “government” decided to kill a bunch of green energy incentives, including the EV discount that was upwards of $14,000.
Yup. They are less like a government and more like a viking raiding party. Hacking and burning everything down with no plans to build anything for themselves.
giggles in portuguese
Thank you.
Bless up the price is right thanks guys keep up the great work from Ontario.
Two things, I think there Should also be a wagon month... Number 2 I think you need to have the polar opposite of the medium McDonald's (small Tim's) test. I'm thinking Yeti Rambler 36 Oz?
