We leased a 2019 Niro EV EX and are absolutely thrilled with the car. It's actually getting much higher range than Kia disclosed. We're averaging 265-270 miles on a full charge and we live in S. CA with the air con on at all times. Others are reporting 300. The base model EX gave us all the safety tech we were looking for including smart cruise control with stop and go which is terrific for CA's bumper to bumper freeway traffic. The seats are very comfortable with cloth inserts surrounded by "vegan" leather (using Tesla's terminology for their non-animal leather seats) and there's plenty of leg/head room plus good cargo space even with the back seats up. We love the multi system regen, the twist shift, and the fact the car has a cooling system for the battery because we live in Palm Springs in the Mohave desert. We were replacing a 2017 Hyundai Tucson and wanted the roominess of an SUV and the Niro EV provides that. The only complaint we have is the charging port. It looks and feels flimsy and they need to improve on that. This is our first EV and we're looking forward to what Kia/Hyundai offer in three years when our lease is up on this one. Thanks for your video. It helped us with choosing the Niro and we're really happy we did!
@@dnegel9546 27,500 plus miles later and we still love the car. It has had no issues except for a steering motor cable thingy that was repaired under the warranty. Nothing squeaking or rattling over time and maintenance has basically been rotating tires and replacing a couple filters. No changes in range and it charges as expected on our home level 2 charger which averages $25-$30 a month extra on our electric bill. It's fun to drive, handles the road well, and we love the smart cruise with driver assist, as well as the brake hold. The smart cruise can be set as low as 5 miles per hour and we use for both city and highway driving. Loads of room in the boot and we used it a lot last year to help with a move from our old home into our new one. I'm glad some brands are still installing halogen fog lights! Bright white LEDs are useless in bad weather and defeat the entire purpose of what fog lights are supposed to do. Fog lights should emit a warm, low and flat light beam, that is focused on the road and periphery a short distance ahead, 2500k to 2700k is best for visibility in snow and fog. I have been very annoyed by the move to "color match" all forward lighting in the industry. It's aesthetics (form) overriding the safety (function) these lights are supposed to provide. Just one more irritating trend in the auto industry, just like the tacked on infotainment screens.

@vide fa Actually, no you can't, not as a plug and play solution for fog light applications. I challenge you to name a single vehicle manufacturer that offers 2500k LED fog light from factory, you won't find one. I further challenge you to find an aftermarket 2500K LED plug and play fog light solution. They are extremely difficult to find and are typically not plug and play installation, if you can find it at all. As I said above, it's all about color matching and lighting aesthetics these days. Poor weather visibility is hardly a consideration.

I purchased a Niro PHEV a year ago. I have a little over 5,000 miles on it now. Most of my trips are 24 miles or less on a daily basis, so most of my driving is in EV mode. I still prefer having a gas engine so that I don't have to hunt for a charging outlet or station at a destination 100 miles or more away and then have range anxiety on returning home.

For the viewers who believe that the 20th century was a time when dinosaurs roamed the highways, it's worth noting that for many decades drivers managed to use their RWD vehicles in challenging winter conditions when four wheel drive vehicles were few and far between. Moreover, in the late sixties I owned a Saab 96, one of the very few cars with FWD in those days. It was virtually unstoppable in the ice and snow of hilly upstate New York when most other vehicles sat immobilized in their garages and driveways. AWD is a welcome option in modern crossovers but for about 95% of winter driving it's no more effective than winter tires on the front wheels of a vehicle with the engine weight directly over those wheels.
Also with EVs and the option of putting the motor in the back that weight can be over the rear wheels. Personally I prefer the decision of Tesla and VW to put the motor in the rear.

Awesome review! I can tell you’re used to reviewing high-end luxury cars like when you mentioned the backseats aren’t heated but actually this car amazes me with all the features it has for a Kia. I really want to get an electric car and I love the look of this one. Thanks for the review I’d love to see how it performs in cold weather.
Good review. Last year I was waiting for this car to come out, but ended up buying a Model 3, as I needed a car and only wanted to buy a good electric vehicle. While I do not regret at all spending more to get the M3, I suggest to people who are impressed with my car to look at this one along with the Kona and the Bolt. Having the hatchback for storage, good comfort & features, and what I call good “family usability” make this car vehicle very compelling to me. The lower price tag also helps. I plan on turning others onto this review and others you’ve done to see what EV could be right for them.
Exactly, because alot of EVs people are talking about these days are luxury/performance vehicles, that has become kind of an expectation. I think what KIA/Hyundai are doing is perfect. It's still quick because of electric motors, but doesn't offer so much unnecessary performance that the normal driver doesn't need. Once EVs drop to about a hair under 30k in the future, I'm instantly picking one of these up, hopefully it's a Kona
You are all wrong! Because the torque is limited by software under 10mph! This is a safety feature! Tesla don't care if they kill toddlers on the drive way! Picky Americans like to sue foreign car makers but Tesla seem to get away with murders after murders!
What is the fascination with 0-60 times? It's another antiquated ICE-reviewer crutch that is likely irrelevant to most people buying an EV. I'm buying an EV for environmental reasons and for the pure efficiency; not so that I can beat the guy next to me at the stoplight whilst driving my groceries home.
0-60/100kph is significant, as cities become more congested traffic becomes more aggressive. This creates a decrease in merge times, specifically from a standstill. I see it like this, having ample acceleration creates a temporal force-field.
@@MrPunch09 thats the most idiotic thing ive ever heard. How bout more people take public transportation, carpool, and ride bikes instead of clogging up all the roads and freeways with more cars!
@@lolouro2266 Sorry, that's not going to happen no matter how much you and I might like to believe it should. Convenience today is the catchword in everything, and most people are far too busy and self absorbed to "do the right thing" versus doing the most convenient thing. Public transportation doesn't cut it, nor does carpooling or bicycling. I agree with you it is a problem, but I can't see it ever disappearing within the next 50 years or so...
Just bought one. Super pleased. The setup was well thought out. Reading through the owner's books, I saw a very interesting note. It stated that repeated DC high-rate charging will generally affect the battery health and lifespan. AC charging is preferable. Huh. Makes total sense, though. I don't intend on routine long-distance trips needing blast chaging.
All FWD EVs should be RW. The Bolt, the Volt, the Leaf, the Niro, the Kona, and the Soul should all be rear wheel drive. The i3 and the VW I.D. are both rear wheel drive. It's just more fun. I think it would work wonders to sell more cars.
It's not a game changer if it is only available as a California compliance car. Here in Texas I'd have better luck shopping for a unicorn. My local Kia and Hyundai dealers will not support any of their companies' plug-ins even for recall work!
Agreed @lessdeth69 ! These companies want to make 5000 a year of these cars maximum so people can't buy them en masse. It's only a compliance car that major auto makers are willing to produce, otherwise they lose their maintenance and service $$ money and their dealer network becomes pointless
@@TheGerm24 I did see that in Redline Reviews. I'll believe it when I see it. I hope KIa/Hyundai takes the attitude that Honda did with the Clarity, basically telling all their dealers, "you will be trained and you will commit to carrying at least one unit of this new plug-in model."
This is a very interesting EV. Perhaps one of my most anticipated potential future buy for me. But the fact that it is only going to be sold in 8 states only really staggers its momentum. Hope it change in the near future. Really like to see it here in the midwest.
Please, let's end together this trend of calling one pedal driving "regen". Regenerative braking is the transformation of a car's kinetic energy into power that goes to the batteries. It is a feature on all EVs, and can only be disabled if the batteries can't take the extra charge, or are somehow defective. One pedal driving, or *automatic* regeneration, happens when the regeneration begins as soon as you take your foot off the thrust pedal ("go" pedal is kinda stupid, let's end it too), regardless of you pressing the brakes or not.
Test drove a Tesla 3 long range and expected to love it and buy one. Didn't like it. Very snazzy but I wanted a car and not computer with wheels. Went to Kia, saw the Niro EV and bought one. I love this car.
I’m not a big fan of the design of the Kia Niro as I am still warming up to EV’s but as far as the interior goes, I really like the way the dash is set up along with floating transmission selector. What would be cool is if Kia could’ve added some more functionality to that center display and allowed you to pull up a map so you could see it without having to look at the infotainment screen. Some ambient lighting would be cool too to make the vehicle feel more premium.
I have owned nine Kia's during the last number of years, and the latest the 2018 Kia Niro Hybrid is a really great car to drive. Out the door at $29K Canadian, it's just at my borderline of price acceptability for any car. The new fully electric vehicle looks GREAT but the price for me is just not there yet. But most important for me at this point is the fact there are no range worries since the current model can run on gas, and I can head anywhere without worrying about filling up. Mileage for me sits around 60 to 65 miles per Canadian gallon, so gas costs very little. It's also a lot of fun to drive and the Sport mode doesn't seem to affect gas mileage by any noticeable amount (it's actually better than my motorcycle mileage...GL1800 Gold Wing..) I really think Kia has a winner here in any of their hybrid or fully electric vehicles. But the landscape for charging convenience is where it has to improve drastically before full EV's can come into their own. Plus the price MUST drop significantly as well
The great handling comes from not only the low center of gravity but also from torque vectoring on the e-Niro which is not available on the hybrid models. Acceleration is more than fast enough for most people; remember this is a family/practical car, not a sports sedan that wants to compete with the likes of a BMW 3-series like Tesla with the Model 3. It's a great car and in most European countries it will be a struggle to get hold of one. Luckily I reserved my spot on time, only about a month of waiting left.
We still plan on switching this year. We're running into some challenges with 4K with our current cameras and plan to upgrade our equipment later this year. Stay tuned!
An excellent video. I like the style of it and all the real world information. I think you made one mistake that I suggest you correct in future videos. The trunk space would not force you to deal with a pump kit. If you notice the shape of the foam you'll see that it is ready for a doughnut spare and I'll bet that if you remove the foam it will perfectly fit a full size spare.
In the UK we only get this in one spec, which is the one you show here plus a few other bits. Oddly though the internal lights are tungsten filament bulbs not LED. It also has a WLTP range of 380 miles and "What Car" magazine got a real-world range of 252 miles, almost 5 miles per kwh. I don't agree that it needs a second motor but if the motor was at the rear then they wouldn't have to limit the torque at very low speeds, they're doing that in an attempt to reduce wheelspin.
Okay, can we PLEASE stop using the idiotic MPG-e term? EVs are becoming mainstream, so let's use the proper miles/kWh. It's not that hard to figure out. 240 miles / 64 kWh battery = an average of 3.7 miles per kWh 😉 Thanks!
I agree. MPGe is a useless number. It was a hoaky attempt by early EVs to hide the fact that the average battery would die by the end of your driveway.
I disagree. Your kw/h per mile doesn't explain (to someone who doesn't know about evs) anything. The mpg-e is a logical thought...that thought being: "100mpg-e = 100mpg gas, so it should only cost the price of about 1 gallon of gas to go 100 miles."
This probably doesn't mean anything to anyone that doesn't already know how to look it up 🤣 (Edit: I did try to look it up ... the hybrid nero is 0.29, so this should be slightly better with the closed off grill)
There is nothing wrong with this car. This is a very biased review. I like it and I would buy one. I am 66 years old and I do not go very far so it would suit me perfectly. Give me one and I will take it. It is better than a Tesla after all.
Strange they didn't include seat memory as I have it in my 17' touring model. But looking forward to giving it a test when my lease is up towards the end of the year.

My brother owns a 2017 Kia Niro hybrid, he has had virtually no problems with it. He lives in Anchorage Alaska and uses it as an Uber vehicle for his second job.
The issue is how many Kia owners own their own homes or have a place to charge this thing? Teslas are bought by rich people who have homes. I find proliferation of electrics more dependent on fast charging outside stations availability (10 minutes or less). Till then, they’ll remain a niche product.

I plan on turning others onto this review and others you’ve done to see what EV could be right for them.
Nearly every review I've seen says the Bolt has bad seats, that's unfortunate. But I read better seats are coming in 2021.
That black cladding doesn't make it look rugged.
It makes it look cheap. :(
The design took a bit to grow on me, but honestly looks pretty damn solid now that I’ve seen this review
0-60 in 7 sec disappointing? Why? It's not a performance vehicle?
He's spoiled by the Tesla. LOL.
Once EVs drop to about a hair under 30k in the future, I'm instantly picking one of these up, hopefully it's a Kona
youtubasoarus No because it can do better since it has Instant torque.
He likes options.
You are all wrong! Because the torque is limited by software under 10mph! This is a safety feature! Tesla don't care if they kill toddlers on the drive way! Picky Americans like to sue foreign car makers but Tesla seem to get away with murders after murders!
What he meant was Considering as EV car...
I am not a ev lover and I am glad Kia made this car we do need more EVs on the road.
Right... i would like them to have even less crap in it so it weighs less...
@@MrPunch09 Well, I'm down with the Star Trek reference, but I guess I live where non-warp merging is still possible.
This and the Model 3 are at the top of my list so I greatly appreciate your videos on them!
Kia and Hyundai are excellent brands that make excellent vehicles.
Atleast its not as ugly as the Mercedes-Benz EQC
Royhan Facts. That thing's hideous 🤢. No one in their right mind would buy that ugly compliance car
well it is uglier ew . the eqc is much better in terms of looks and tech
Ikr! That thing is so ugly!
Etron and eqc pretty elegant looking to me
Maybe personal taste
K Capone I'll let you know when I see them in mass here in the Bay area. Everyone who can will buy them here in CA.

" Be the Underdog"
"There's some wheel spin, that's hilarious!" hurt the poor Niro's feelings right there...
It's not a game changer if it is only available as a California compliance car. Here in Texas I'd have better luck shopping for a unicorn. My local Kia and Hyundai dealers will not support any of their companies' plug-ins even for recall work!
That's BS there are 32 on the lot right now just in Austin. www.kia.com/us/en/dealers/inventory/niro-plug-in-hybrid/2019/76018
He means pure electric, not hybrid.@@chrish6373
Agreed @lessdeth69 ! These companies want to make 5000 a year of these cars maximum so people can't buy them en masse. It's only a compliance car that major auto makers are willing to produce, otherwise they lose their maintenance and service $$ money and their dealer network becomes pointless
They are claiming to sell it in Texas by the way.
I own this car in korea it is really great car. I satisfy 300% reliable efficiancy and confortable
I’d like to see them put the charging port high above one of the rear wheels, so it’s less vulnerable in a collision.
Why place the charging port practically at the 1st point of impact if a front end impact occurs?
So you buy a new one
@@nickr3441 Yes, because when your gas cap gets bumped in a side impact, you buy a whole new car.
It's also a lot of fun to drive and the Sport mode doesn't seem to affect gas mileage by any noticeable amount (it's actually better than my motorcycle mileage...GL1800 Gold Wing..)
I really think Kia has a winner here in any of their hybrid or fully electric vehicles. But the landscape for charging convenience is where it has to improve drastically before full EV's can come into their own. Plus the price MUST drop significantly as well
This filming area looks very familiar. Is this Alex Dykes' driveway?
It sure was! The media drive was about 15 mins from his house and he was our drive partner! lol
Good eye
Alex lives in the Bay Area. In fact, I learned that Alex’s office is only 10-15 mins away from where I live.
Wow, cool, your channel is the best!!!!!
Okay, Sofyan and Redline Reviews, is about time y'all start producing videos in 4K.
Love your videos, regardless. Keep it up!
I watched the whole vid on smoke signals and am still hoping for 8 track tape version....
We still plan on switching this year. We're running into some challenges with 4K with our current cameras and plan to upgrade our equipment later this year. Stay tuned!
redline reviews is the reason fascia is in my vocabulary
This guy does good reviewing cars. Easy to understand. He is a lot better than carnow channel. Looks like a nice ev
Wow this is by far the best looking EV, nice dash. Very nice exterior. Looks very good.
In case anyone’s wondering, that 12V battery located under the hood is for accessories.
240 miles / 64 kWh battery = an average of 3.7 miles per kWh 😉
Thanks!
@@bobedwards8896 not if you get free charging (which many places have). Most of my charging is at work, for free. 😉
@@megaroeny nice!
You made our heads hurt.
In further EV reviews can you mention the coefficient Of drag
Huh?
This probably doesn't mean anything to anyone that doesn't already know how to look it up 🤣 (Edit: I did try to look it up ... the hybrid nero is 0.29, so this should be slightly better with the closed off grill)
I saw another reviewer say it's got 0.29 drag coefficient, same as Kona Electric.
@@DigitalDissident Not entirely true. The second generation Scion XB has a drag coefficient similar to an F1 car and it's practically a box on wheels.
I do agree that he should definitely state the coefficient of drag. That would be an interesting point to bring up.
There is nothing wrong with this car. This is a very biased review. I like it and I would buy one. I am 66 years old and I do not go very far so it would suit me perfectly. Give me one and I will take it. It is better than a Tesla after all.
The one major flaw for e-Nero and Kona EV is their in the USA limited availability. That is why I bought a 2018 Nissan Leaf, which I love.
This is the only KIA I’d buy.
Strange they didn't include seat memory as I have it in my 17' touring model. But looking forward to giving it a test when my lease is up towards the end of the year.
This has to be the best review of a vehicle i have ever seen, and I have seen many. Great job. Not that i buy a lot of cars but I will come looking for your take on new ones when I return to the market in a couple years!
When I need a door sound fix, I can count on Redline to deliver.
I agree...I think Kia should offer this thing with AWD
My brother owns a 2017 Kia Niro hybrid, he has had virtually no problems with it. He lives in Anchorage Alaska and uses it as an Uber vehicle for his second job.
you always give a great presentation.....you are my "go to guy" for car reviews.....thank you!!!
That Torque though. It'll smoke my 2.0 stinger.
The issue is how many Kia owners own their own homes or have a place to charge this thing? Teslas are bought by rich people who have homes. I find proliferation of electrics more dependent on fast charging outside stations availability (10 minutes or less). Till then, they’ll remain a niche product.
Agree about that road noise. In Australia we have coarse chip bitumen which is horrible for noise suppression.
I really do love this car already
This design looks much better than the Hyundai Kona EV.
KIA For The Win!
Preach!
still cooler than a model 3. Looks better too. Bet it'll be more reliable as well. Nice to see an EV with a traditional dash and buttons.
I love the design it’s very fast and if you realize as you was driving a Tesla Model S pass you up when you was talking about the regen braking.
That's what we're here to find out!... In this segment! Yyyyes!
Awesome review! For those of us in snowy winter climate, the reduced Eco mode is key for reduced spinout in snow. I wish it was a little better since my Ioniq is still too powerful for snow for climbing.
Great review! Every thorough with all aspects of the EV.
Finally, an EV that I can see as my daily driver. Looks are average, but they aren't "experimental".
Adding extra motor to the rear wheel is not enough. It also needs more ground clearance.
He did a good job of reviewing...I dont see why range is a problem for people? Statistically the average person drives 33 miles per day.
17:55 "OMG let's not touch the brakes!.." I've never heard that but it's hilarious!
No game changing anything. Just a really good EV.

11:40 0-60 is around 6.5 secs but the screen says 7.8 secs that's a big difference.
It doesn't *really* matter
Please discuss the thermal cooling systems in electric cars as well as the engine more related to who makes the cells Panasonic ? etc and exactly what kind of cooling refrigerant vs antifreeze vs air cooled and if there is warranty who has the BEST warranty on electric cars please.
Definitely the best looking EV/Hybrid vehicle on the market. All other hybrids and EVs are hideous.
Sofyan bey, you are a card! I really like the way you do the review. I was feeling that torque! This car, does so, appeal to me, in a big way!
as usual enjoyed the review, should have commented on charging port/wire as well, video quality was not great like what we are used to from Redline
Ugh, I hate when non-sedans put the license plate down on the rear bumper. 🤮

great review sofyan!
Nice review. Are you ever going to review the Bolt? To my knowledge, that is one car you’ve missed..
I do not think we need to compare this with a Tesla , Tesla is more expensive and fancy thing which personally I do not care , If I buy an EV will be to go to work back and forth not long distances. But for the price it is awesome
I think what he's trying to say is that this car has some very uniquely unique features, all unique to this quite unique car :)
