      I am glad to say, after many, many years of experience, that you CAN find a balance. But it has to be an acceptable balance. Which means it changes over time, And, particularly, it means limited gaming [or indeed anything else extra-curricular] in the build up to exams. My brother found this out the hard way.

    Hi, Hokie! Great to hear from you again! This was a very enjoyable video. I've done math all my life, and never once taken engineering classes. Most of the stuff that I work with is very abstract, and while it DOES have applications in cryptography, I very rarely care/think about what the real life implications are. This was a very refreshing change of pace. This video also cements my belief that you are an excellent teacher (Halo and otherwise). I feel as though if I'd seen this video 7 years ago, I might have considered civil engineering. Ah,well. I hope you can take some time off work to upload some more videos over the summer. :)

    • @fanamatakecick97

      The only reasons I knew the applications to real life of calculus (before this video) is because of physics, specifically basic 2D motion- and rotation-based physics.
      But now I see way more implications thanks to this amazing and underrated fellow known as Hokie

    Good stuff, Hokie. This brought back some fun memories. Good luck on the FE exam! It's a pain in the ass, but you will be very glad later if you pass it the first time. And just some advice from my experience - take the PE exam as soon as you qualify for it. It will only get harder the longer you go into your career and the more time that elapses since your college courses. A few years ago I tried to help a few engineers in their 40s and 50s prepare just to take the FE exam, and they struggled immensely because they had simply forgotten so much of the material. They would have had an almost insurmountable obstacle if they went on to take the PE. So in my opinion, the less time that elapses from graduation to the PE exam, the better your odds of passing it and the less study time you will have to commit.
    Becoming a PE is a big boost later in your career. Much more valuable than an advanced degree in engineering. I have my MS in mechanical engineering, and truth be told I don't think it has really helped much. Maybe it helped my resume stand out a bit, but the PE license has had a definitive positive impact, and in civil/structural engineering I would imagine that a PE is even more valuable than in my field.

    Just reminding me how much I miss my CAD job. Although I didn't do much work with Structural docs, (sometimes the Engineers in office would tell me to push a few changes to certain sheets though) I was a drafter and usually drew framing details or prepared pool packs so the plans could be sent out, since they needed someone to offload how many pool jobs they were getting. It was a very enjoyable and relaxing job to have, and when AutoCAD decides to have decent performance it is a nice program to work with as well and is very fast once you get the commands down. The people... extremely very nice. Wouldn't trade them for anything.
    Anyway, keep it up. Structural Engineers are always needed and you'll never be out of work as far as I can tell. Your drafters will ask you for help a lot though, so be prepared for that... haha

    Just monotonous and time consuming
    As someone in Calculus, this looks more fun than finding rates of change

    • @Hokiebird428
      @Hokiebird428  5 лет назад +3

      The original version of the video did have calculus. Shear is the derivative of moment, moment integrates to give you camber/rotation, and rotation integrates to give you deflection.

    • @fanamatakecick97
      @fanamatakecick97 5 лет назад

      Hokiebird428
      That part of calculus isn’t, I use that concept a lot in physics when dealing with nonuniform kinematics, work, and impulse.
      But besides that, what you said makes sense
      So the 3rd derivative of deflection is shear? Interesting. Tho I must ask what are your constants of integration when going into your integrals from moment in relation to what you integrated
      Ik that sounds confusing, so let me give an example of what I mean:
      V = ∫Xdx + V₀, V₀ is the equivalent of C

    • @Hokiebird428
      @Hokiebird428  5 лет назад +2

      Your constants can be solved for using your boundary conditions. For example, with a pinned connection, at the connection (x=0) you know that your deflection is 0, and at your midspan, (x=L/2) you know that your deflection is maximum, and has a rotation of 0. But more often than not, you would have a definite integral so that you don't have to worry about integration constants.
      And then to put a healthy dose of reality on all of those calculations: they are only possible to do by hand for the most basic of structures, like a simply supported beam. Most of the time, the software takes care of it.

    • @fanamatakecick97
      @fanamatakecick97 5 лет назад

      Hokiebird428
      Ah, i see now. Definite integrals make way more sense in this case
      Also makes since that deflection is at the apex.
      So, on the topic, how are you enjoying this now that graduation is so close?

What do you enjoy so much that you’d be willing to put up with the boring or unpleasant parts (such as studying hard, writing, doing research, or even manual labor) if it meant you could enjoy doing it as a career? Is that career a viable choice for making a living? Is there a market for that skillset?
      Let’s get this out of the way real quick: There is an overabundance of kids that want to be game developers because they grew up playing SNES and N64 games. As a result, game companies pay them relatively little and treat them like shit because they are so easily replaceable. And this is only one example of a field where the supply outweighs the demand.
      With these questions in mind, talk to a guidance conselor, teachers, relatives, family, and friends to find out where your interests lie.

    It's pretty funny to see these formulas in inches, foots and pounds, I've been used to seeing milimeters, meters and kilograms for this past semester.
    I'm wondering, in what branch of civil engineering are you more interested in? I'm gonna guess that, as with mechanical engineering, there's a lot of things you could do, so do you have an idea of where you'll be going next?

      Yup. I've already got a first job lined up. I'm going to be a structural engineer. Well, technically an E.I.T. for at least my first 5 years, until I get my PE license.

    If I recall correctly, this is the second or third time you have had to tell people to chill the hell out and quit begging for videos. First was the walkthrough making guide, and though the recommended gear is outdated, it holds up well in my opinion. Sometimes gotta put folks in their place.

      Deffinitely not _anything._ You probably don’t want to consult me for French history or advanced chemistry, but concerning math, yeah I tutored that a few summers ago. I can ‘teach’ pretty much anything up to basic calculus. Beyond that, I would need to review the material and make a lesson plan before attempting to teach it.

    Not judging anything but electronics engineering is way more tougher than civil engineering. We as an electronics engineer have way more work to do in an organization.

    • @Hokiebird428
      @Hokiebird428  5 лет назад +3

      Maybe, but also consider this: an electronics engineer fucks up, and your device doesn't work because you fried one of the components. A civil engineer fucks up and _people die._
