Is there a limit when it comes to companions? How many are possible to get?

They have 3 flavors of companions. Some are similar to Fallout 4/New Vegas where they are fleshed out and have their own quests and depth. Those are Sarah Morgan, Barrett, Sam Coe, and Andreja.
Then they have some Skyrim-esque Followers who are just surface level. Like Faendal. Limited dialogue, but still comment on things here and there. A good example is Marika Boros (who you can hire at The Viewport in New Atlantis). Cool character, but little impact.
Then they have true generics like what we got in Oblivion. Characters like "Outpost Security Specialist" in a similar vein to "Dark Brotherhood Assassin" or "Mage Apprentice"
So in theory if you have enough ship space and Outposts you can hire infinite numbers of Generics I'd guess. But Constellation Companions and regular followers can also be assigned to Outposts as well as ships.
