I've never played EDF, but I like the idea of picking up armour, weapons, etc.
It seems much more satisfying to know that you're getting these things you picked up, rather than hoping to get random drops at the end of a mission.
Looks great!
Thank you for this video! This was my first EDF and now I'm a huge fan. Currently going through EDF 5 right now. THE E.D.F. DEPLOYS!
I always remember Super Earth Defense Force for the SNES when I hear about this game. Great review by the way ^^
Thank you for finally giving me a reason to get a PS4. I'm a huge EDF fan and I've agreed with you on nearly everything you've said on all your EDF reviews, so to hear the word "definitive" so many times, you've really given me something to look forward to.
Great vid Derek, you got me in to EDF with your 2017 review and it's awesome to see the series at this point, love this game.
"E-D-F, E-D-F..."
the EEEEEEEEDDDDDDFFFFF DEPLOYYYYS
EDF! EDF! EDF! EDF!
"Rectum: Damn near killed 'em"
I love you dude.
Haha...you're reviews are awesome! Can't get enough of them. Happy new year, mate!
Holy cooperation, Batman! Derek actually did a co-review right! Or, I guess, the more appropriate thing to say is Derek did a co-review in a style I can get behind: with each reviewer having their own thoughts on the game, but using a script to make the two flow together well and not just doing it live (there's an O'Reilly joke somewhere in there) or letting one person take over a good portion of the video while the other just sits back and twiddles their thumbs.
Great stuff. Can't wait for more videos from you.
+megamarsonic; the reaction to the IA video led me to realize people preferred scripting. glad you liked it!
SWEET! I've been waiting for another review. Though I do like that you've managed to have two awesome new series running right out the gate for 2016 Derek.
+tim5fl; reviews get kind of old for me, punching weight and past mortem break up the flow. i got seriously burnt out during the hvgn days so im trying to avoid that with a variety of shows under the new ssff banner
Stop Skeletons From Fighting I can see that. Which is why I'm looking forward to more Punching Weight & Past Mortem videos in the future.
You and Mark from Classic Game Room would be a great duo.
He loves EDF as much, if not *MORE*, than you do. :3
I'll take comments that didn't age well for 500 Alex
@@heyhonpuds Fill me in, what happened to 'em?
Fuck yeah!
I've been waiting for Derek's review!
Been looking to get into this series, and also need another reason to finally get a PS4...looks like perfect timing. Great review!
This is the EDF we deserve. Its soooo gooood. I was already happy with 2025, but the repurchase was sooo worth it!
Here's how I'd fix the loot system:
Keep the health crates, but weapons and armors are acquired automatically when you kill bugs. So instead of dropping crates, you just automatically acquire them. So there's still a bit of a random factor to it, but it's not as tedious as the current formula and it's not as grind-happy as EDF: IA
What the furkc, the song at the start is so good! Like something from a really upbeat italian prog rock band or something! I dont think a little clip from a song as ever made me want to play a game more
I finished all the levels on Normal and the earlier levels I have done on all the difficulties. This was my first EDF game. I liked the game but It got a bit boring and tedious later on. I also felt with experimenting with the difficulties that it was either too easy or too hard and never just right. Also I hated the giant spiders that would be able to hit you going though multiple buildings and then trapping you and you not been able to hit them back on account of them been behind multiple buildings.
So I just learned that EDF 5 is coming THIS December, just as my friends and I were getting back into 4
Hey man I just stumbled across EDF 5 coming out on the PS4! Since your reviews got me to try and buy the EDF games I thought I’d leave a comment in case you haven’t seen it already!
I just rediscovered you from back when on retrowware. Thought you had quit... Can't wait to check out some content
+pinfarmer; i took some time off to sort out some personal stuff but i've been back at it since last year!
Hi Derek, thanks for all your hard work! Your taste is impeccable. That being said; isn't it time for a best of 'dumb games' like EDF, Point Blank etc? That would be awesome!
This whole series is awesome. And I've had both EDF: 2025 on the 360, and EDF: 4.1 The shadow of New Despair on the PS4. And will probably pick up EDF5, and EDF6 on Steam.
Thanks for taking a look at this game. I haven't played the earlier EDF games, but I think I have just found the perfect one (compared to the old ones). I'll nab 4.1 whenever I get a PS4.
+Gameplay and Talk YOu can get it on PS3 or 360 as well.
I recently picked up EDF2 on the Vita because of what I heard in this video. It is my first EDF game and I absolutely love it. It's mission structure makes it perfect for handheld play. I think I might pick up 4.1 on the PS4 since my PC isn't the best and since it is only about $20 on Amazon.
Game looks great!! If I had a PS4 I'd go for it, but I'm planning on getting a workstation PC which'll set me back, but hey, if I had enough extra cash, this along with Bloddborne, Uncharted, Neptunia and some other JRPGs and action games would be on my list for sure! Another great video, man!
EDF 2025 runs a bit better on the 360 than the PS3.
Hope they port EDF Iron Rain to Switch when it comes out, that would be fantastic.
It took you a year and a half, but we finally have your review for EDF 2025!! :)
Minus the lame skeet with your buddy, the rest was spot on, the game is freaking awesome, but some of those shitty EDF trademarks, like the armor/gun pickups have to go and never come back
I just bought this on sale via PSN because I remembered seeing this video. IT'S AMAZING!
nice review d00d
Incredible review, very informative to someone who is a long time fan and loved the discussion about EDFs future towards the end. Agree with all of it. EDF seriously needs to evolve. EDF 4.1 is basically 4, which was basically 2017, which was basically EDF2 which was almost identical to 1. It's the same thing every game, and I love it for it but... The time has definitely come for a step up. I'm not a huge fan of IA, but I can HUGELY appreciate what it tried to do, and would love to see some of what they tried implemented into a future Sandlot title. Hell, I'd love an IA2, my only problem with the original was the weapons are just super unsatisfying
Hah. No.
I liked Iron Rain for what it was :( But 5 was phenomenal and am very excited for when 6 finally comes to the west :)
I still remember your post on Facebook with the video "...I need this in my life..." Who doesn't?!
EDF!!! Can't wait for HVGN volume 3 box set... I hope that is a thing...Great video...
Hope u still tag ur videos as HVGN because everything time I search ur video I still type in "happy video game nerd" or "HVGN" by habit. SSFF will never be in my muscle memory.
Awesome vid btw
Took ya long enough. ;) Jk, great video man. Always delighted to see new content. :)
Oh hey Derek! I didn't know you were on here! :D
The future of mankind hinges on this review...
Good thing it's here.
This looks like the best Starship Troopers game never made.
+civilwarfare101; absolutely!!
IA was a failure as an EDF game. It was however an okay 3rd person shooter. It definitely wasn't EDF though. Had none of the EDF feel.
It felt like it was made by people that didn't understand the series at all.
It's an American spin off, which makes a ton of sense
Guardian Heroes and Perfect Dark HD WOOT!
On topic through, this is one of those games that makes me want a PS4 (or pray that a decent PC port of 4.1 will happen), and I feel for you on how the grind for health pickups really hampers the experience of the EDF games (although I've only played 2017 on the Xbox 360), and I can't count how many times I've been screwed over by a dead bugs body in these games while trying to perform some crowd control with lumbering infantry soldier. If only they had something to push their mobility up to likes of Doomguy or Duke from Duke Nukem 3D.
I totally agree with you regarding the criticisms - if they could just remove having to pick up the loot individually, and have corpses ragdoll or be non-solid, the game would be almost perfect.
disagree with both. corpses disappearing was the one point everybody hated in IA and picking up loot is fine.
For the record, corpses ARE ragdolling in 4.1. You need to shoot them in order to move'em, but they are easily moved out of the way, and even can be gibbed post-mortem, if you are using explosive weponry. Thanks to unlimited ammunition there really is no excuse not to simply keep blowing shit up left and right.
I'm sorry to hear Nekbone passed. May his family mourn peacefully.
Me and my friend are going through this game now. It's quite fun.
EDF is crazy fun, too underrated!
that versus mode music from Earth Defense Force 2025 is so hype
The one thing IA did REALLY REALLY wrong was the disappearing enemy corpses.
durp hurp Tunnel levels beg to differ.
my thoughts
Sometimes, having a tunnel literally blocked with ant corpses and pushing it back with a lightning shotgun and even hitting some enemies through the gaps just feels badass, plus it can be fun to see alien corpses fly in the air, then hitting one with a rocket and seeing it fly into pieces.
100% agree. The corpses are absolutely amazing. Sure they can add to the difficulty, but that's fine. Having a field pile up in ant corpses feels so good. Hell, I'd love it if they made corpses last longer, I want that Starship Troopers pileup!
Fun. I've been binge playing it with my brother. Just play it and give it a chance and next thing you know you'll end up playing it for hours on end.
I was watching this while in a Skype call with one of my best friends and he could hear the video.
We both lost our shit at "Video over. It's a must--buy it. It's just fucking great. Just buy it. Done. Goodnight."
*credits roll*
Did Derek really put RIP HVGN in his credits?
Fucking triggered.
+Geno344 He wants his new name to stick, but it won't because it's nonsense and has nothing to do with what the channel's about.
+Geno344; it's "Derek"
+Stop Skeletons From Fighting edited xd
wow a game with an actual manual, now that deserve some praise
Hate to be "THAT GUY" but does anyone know the name of the theme which plays at around 00:12? Thanks!
did you ever find it?
in case anyone is still wondering, it's the Versus Mode music from Earth Defense Force 2025
@@maxemidian Oh lawdy you came through on this one! Much appreciated!
on the credits that fly by should have been "do what it do phone hang up!"
There's places I have to BEE today, but I can stick around for this.
Yo Derek! Have you tried the splitscreen? I've been trying to convince a friend to give it a shot and I was wondering how well it compares to the single player/online.
I agree, this game is a lot of fun! This is my first game in the series.
Erik's got a DK cabinet... sooo cool
EDF Iron Rain HYPE! Looks more like Insect Armageddon, but way prettier and a whole lot more going on. Here's hoping they add all the levels and not the only 30 some in IA.
Fun looking series. It reminds me of a faster version of the "Virtua On" series. Tell me, will you ever review any of the games for that series? I know there was one released for the Saturn and Dreamcast.
Getting this game soon for my PS4, can't wait to play it.
Is the red skeleton in the background a Castlevania reference?
I just bought this game and I get home I see this video what a coincidence.
Like the Splatterhouse 2 and 3 in the background.....👍
I think in terms of modernizing EDF for a future, I have my own qualms to run through.
First, I think implimenting a system equivelant of Borderlands 2's "Badass tokens" would be a wise choice. An inexhaustable supply of menial tweaks that add up as you do basic things such as reach kill or ally-revive-thresholds. These points could also be rewarded in a way simular to Tales of Graces' random battle-goals like beating certain pre-set time-limits for each level (which naturally pause during story-moments of nothing happening) or taking minimal damage. These points would more improve basic stuff like movement speed, increased percentage on drop-rates for unaquired weapons and a percentage modifier on your health and reloads.
Speaking of health, armour pick-ups, if they should ever come back, are to be a shared resource. When wanting to play as multiple characters, armours become a huge issue. For how slow the process of armour-raising is, having to do it for 4 seperate classes is ridiculous. For just how meaty and sizey these games are, there is absolutely no place for this kind of artificial padding. A fix around weapons would be either an in-game store (I can't believe I feel the need to specify this in this day and age) to get general gear, leaving only unique and super-rare weapons for stages (along with free access to the store-stuff) or mabye a sort of piggyback-system, where you can play as a ranger, but grind on behalf of other characters like Air Raiders or Fencers.
Sub-classes would also be of great use. Nothing too fancy. Just something like Wing-divers that specialize in bigger batteries, but more clumsy flying, or a Fencer that's more slim and mobile, but can only carry 1 weapon at a time. Rangers also need a re-buff to balance their otherwise vanilla-style of play. Perhaps give them the addition of 1 more weapon slot? Just something more than a robust selection of weapons. Alongside that, I think those very limited items like 1-use guns and healing weapons that can't be reloaded could benefit from having a spesified slot as opposed to clogging the inventory. Just somehting to make it more accessible in the name of fun. I'm sure the games will be just as challenging.
It's been three thousand years...
I believe it was the remakes that are better than the original video that made me check out this one. Ended up buying the game today since it was on sale. Having played a ton of Armored Core 2 back in the day, I think this game reminded me of that and gave me a certain itch, even though the two games are not necessarily all that similar.
Having found the channel recently, I was wondering if you have any thoughts on Alan Wake? While definitely a game with its flaws, I’ve always had a soft spot for it and the official soundtrack CD is actually quite amazing when heard by itself. Surprisingly it’s among some of my favorite video game OSTs.
Utkuak it's took me 40 hours to be burned, even though it was the only game i played in those 40 hours, in a week.
Yeah i need help
EDF is one of my favourite game series that I never play lol. My first real experience with it was Insect Armageddon, which I love. It's not true EDF, but since I had no experience I could enjoy it for what it was. Played a whole bunch of 2017 portable, and bought 2025 and 4.1 day 1, but I've barely touched them due to friends having no interest, and it just seeming like a huge grind to play alone. :(
I think the perfect EDF game would be one with 4.1's performance and enemy count, IA's loot drops, sprinting and possibly score based rewards, and 2025 and 4.1's fun factor
It looks like that is what EDF 5 will be, they are adding in sprint.
Eoin Smith and the reload-thing from Insect Armageddon.
Some class balance would be nice too. Wing Diver are seriously op.
Kyros Droztamyr Hell no, IA was a disgrace to the franchise.
Awesome
Thank you for talking about the two Vita games! I'm a Vita owner and I've never played any game in this series before but thanks to your videos on it I'm interested in giving it a go - do you guys think I should get Invaders from Planet Space or 2017 Portable, please~?
What I like in edf is that you never know what weapon you will get and that makes the game fun and exciting. Also i like air raider.
Definitely my current fav PS4 game.
Thinking about buying this. it will be my first EDF Game. Hope they bring the 4.1 update to Xbox one.
Dude, EDF mixed with borderlands weapon loot would be the best thing ever.
Looks great and absurd. I like it.
FINALLY!!!! man im glad to see this game get its dues.
I think embracing better elements to make the games better might happen with Sandlot since each time they make these games they do fix major issues that plauged the previous titles, hell just the jump from 2025's virtually unusable vehicles to 4.1's ones with variety and firepower shows that they may not fix all the problems but they fix it bit by bit.
Insect Armageddon is an amazing EDF game. I feel Sandlot is a little jelly. Great things they added in Insect Armageddon. 4.1 is driving me crazy. Fencer is too clunky. IA Battle class is MUCH better, but that is just me.
Should be able to auto get armor and weapons in map. Can we get a sprint. Enemies block vision way too much. 4.1 is still a good EDF game. Insect Armageddon is awesome.
I need to know which game the background music is from, when Eric first entered the video. Can anyone help?
IT'S COMING OUT ON STEAM!
Do you plan on reviewing War of the monsters?
+otakuman23 I second this. Such an overlooked PS2 gem. I'd lose my shit if it ever got a sequel.
pouring one out for gametrailers
I wonder if Derek figured out the Fencer lag cancel trick as of this video. :P
Review of EDF 5 (now on Steam too) when? :D
that weapon is called "leichenzeit" means "corpsetime" in german.
EDF 5 soon, whoop whoop ^^
I think the biggest problem with the EDF series is all the loot boxes. I like that the corpses kick around for a while. I also wish defense/armor mattered more. In EDF it's all about how fast you can kill or, in some cases, run, because everything hits like a truck.
You need to make more vids Derick!
+Lee Wilson 2015 was the most productive year of my career and i've already made 7 videos in 2016. where have you been dude?
+Stop Skeletons From Fighting It was more of a " I really enjoy your videos and would always like more" comment, I guess I hadn't really counted.... sorry!
Goemon!!!
Are you going to reveiw edf 5
Holding out for an Xbox One release. EDF has always been sort of home on the Xbox, and I'm really pissed that this didn't get a release now that I switched over to Microsoft.
+CaptainAtomSmasher; I wouldn't hold your breath on an X1 release.
Stop Skeletons From Fighting
Yeah. I know. Japanese stuff on the X1. But this copy of Raiden 5 I have right here, that was released exclusively on the Xbox One gives me hope.
EDF devs think every other RPGs should force you to collect EXPs scattered on the ground after each battle.
I might pick up one of the older games before I pick this up. I'm still on the fence about buying a PS4.
This game plays SO WELL on PC, 4.1 with mouse and keyboard is just... hhnnnNGNGNJDG
I wish they'd remake the two previous games and release them on Steam... Imagine 2017 and EDF 2 on PC at 60+fps.... AAAAAAA
I have 2025, what's new in terms of content? Should I get this version?
Honestly I’d love to play it, but I sadly only got Xbox so can only play 2025. But what are the differences in other stuff between the two?
I'll be completely honest and apart from a few moments with the genocide gun where the framerate just drops to single-digit territory, I've never had issues with the slowdowns.
Just got edf 2017 free with gold, played 10 mins n bout 2025, awsome
I did the same with IA
Was that The Lost Vikings music I heard in the video later on...?
+SuperTeeter64; yup!
Nice! Haha. No one talks about that game!
+SuperTeeter64 That game is freaking fantastic... even for todays standards, i remember having so much fun with it, the comic visulas were great
The sequel was pretty good too. Stupid expensive to buy now though... Ugh... :\
SuperTeeter64
buy? wink wink
what is that grey gun in the background?
the tl;dr of EDF 4.1 really is "its fucking great, just get it"
(edit) But get it on steam. It goes on sale a lot and its like... 10-15 bucks usually
Picked up edf 2 and edf 4.1 close to each other
I can't say much since the only EDF game I played with 2025, but I wonder if they can do much with the formula considering its such a niche series, with its budget probably being a bag of warm cheeseburgers.
Maybe I'm wrong since some companies like Sega keep improving with games like Yakuza, to even niche companies like Tamsoft with Senran Kagura. I dunno. It's clearly why fans keep playing these games, so I don't know if theres much that should be changed.
It's the same EDF from EDF PS2?
