The Game Boy is such a bottomless pit of insane "this shouldn't exist" games, probably because it was so popular for so long. It's why it's one of my favorite game platforms.
Bill Elliott's NASCAR Fast Tracks actually has a surprising amount of depth to it. Tunning your car for different tracks, damage/tire wear effecting handling, even drafting making you go faster _and_ saving fuel. It was made by the same team who made Test Drive 1&2 and the first 5 Need for Speed games. That screen tearing though... It is a shame we never got a proper NASCAR game on the GBA, would have been so much more capable!
I think that all of the 8 bit and 16 bit Toy Story games push the limits of whatever hardware they're on. It's fitting because of how the movie was groundbreaking in it's time.
The original Toy Story was a technical revolution by being the first computer animated movie and Toy Story racer was a technical revolution on the gameboy color by having prerendered 3d computer graphics ... i see where this is going
so glad I found that MartialHorror video on HVGN, or I may have never seen one of the greatest content creators on RUclips. still finding great games to talk about to this day
I rented Faceball 2000 from my local library as a kid. Kid me was blown away! Then I played it on an emulator a couple of decades later. I...I honestly thought I just had a bad rom or something. Nope. That was the framerate kid me was able to overlook. I lost my innocence the day I lost that ability, I think. Great vid, absolutely LOVE this series.
oh, hey! it kinda warms my heart whenever I see the NintendoWorldReport forums elsewhere. there was a point I was an avid poster in their Podcast discussion forum.
I remember playing the SNES version of Faceball 2000 with a friend many years ago, and we jokingly called it "Pac-Man with guns" or something like that. lol
I made a topic in some forums recently asking for gameboy recommendations and someone said X. At first I thought he meant MMX, but no, it was a shooter. I could not find very much info at all on it, let alone the rom, so its a crazy coincidence it came up in your video. Hopefully more stuff on it will start sprouting up now
The next time you visit in a convention you should attempt a 16 player faceball match. I'm sure you got enough patron backers that will have the required retro tech.
Wow Faceball 2000 reminds me of when I put Doom on my calculator. Although I am tempted to get a copy and always carry it a gameboy and a link cable with me at all times in case i bump in to 15 others who have had the same idea!!
Faceball 2000 on SNES was my favorite quirky game as kid, rented from Tommy Ks ton of times before my mom said we need to buy it (probably spent more than its worth in rental fees haha) Luckily I found out about Funcoland then and got a used copy (how did we survive as gamers without eBay and online retailers?). BTW X-Scape is awesome too, glad to see you giving it some love. I have the original Japanese X in box, not too expensive yet and I recommend for any Gameboy fan!
AN OFFICIAL, FULLY ENGLISH, FULLY FINISHED TRANSLATION OF X HAS BEEN FOUND IN THE RECENT NINTENDO GIGALEAK! Not only that, but a fan translation was being worked on before the gigaleak happened, and the person working on it put it out on the day that the official version was released, because why not?
That's because he said "come at," not "come with." Lol. "...expect it to come at the cost of actual gameplay," I.e. You'd expect the gameplay to suck since the 3-D graphics are so impressive.
I personally have 7 copies of FaceBall 2000 and a trio of 4-link cables. I work at a retro video game store, we have a bi-weekly game night... I think we can make a 16 player death match happen. I'll record a video for you if we can get it together.
Hold up, I purchased X-Scape on the eShop a year or 2 ago (maybe more), even though it's a DSi Ware title... Have they recently been deleting DSi Ware games?
Actually Bill Elliot's NASCAR Fast Tracks is surprisingly ambitious for a GameBoy game. It has drafting mechanics, damage and tire wear that actually effect your car's handling, and tuning options you need to tweak for each track in order to get the car driving the way you want. Sadly you can't save mid-race though, making doing more then about 50 laps a real chore. I've been meaning to invest in a GBC flash cart with save states so I can actually do a full 200 lap race at Daytona! But graphically, yes, it is screen tearing the video game.
Oh man, X. This looks kinda like a small-scale, B&W version of Sierra's Stellar 7 for DOS. The storyline is probably different, but the whole "you are in a 3D space, as programmed in the early 90s, shooting at geometric shapes" bit is SO DAMN FAMILIAR. I think I need X.
Thanks for videos like this! I’ve found lots of neat games like this that I wouldn’t have known about otherwise. I’ve managed to get a copy of both X and racedrivin’ off EBay. They’re pretty good.
I appreciate what you're trying to say, that 3D as we know it today has had a slow evolution, but 3D games have existed in some form almost as long as video games. Elite, an open world space trading sim, came out in 1984. (It was ported to the NES, incidentally.) SubLogic started making flight simulators in 1979. Battlezone was a tank game, a big arcade hit in 1980.
Championship Motocross 2001 featuring Ricky Carmichael on the GameBoy Color is a game you have not mentioned yet. It is 3D and it uses FMV to create the tracks.
Wow so an old unreleased GBC game managed to eventually come out? Now if only they could do that for Katakis 3D, a really impressive looking GBC rail shooter that was never released.
That's the kind of videos I really enjoy :) Ok, I already knew about all of these games, but it's always pleasant to see someone presenting them. Oh and nice use of the Mercenary Force music; I think it's a really good game ! ;) PS: Tiertex also made Championship Motocross 2001 feat. Ricky Carmichael on GBC using the same FMV technology.
9:49 Oh my God, I remember this game from when I was a little kid! It was the only GBC game I played besides my sister's _Alice in Wonderland_ game. 10:46 Wow... even back then, Bo Peep was kickass. :)
Note: although the Atari ST was technically a 'personal computer', it was not a 'PC' in the sense we think of PC games. It was an Atari ST, just like a Macintosh was a Macintosh, and an Amiga was an Amiga, or an X68000 was an X68000. You might have been too young but also living in the US perhaps these early gaming computers weren't as popular there with competition from NES or whatever, to the point people are maybe not familiar with them. I had a 'PC' in the day, it sucked for games

It is a shame we never got a proper NASCAR game on the GBA, would have been so much more capable!
Punching Weight is totally my favorite youtube series right now
I think that all of the 8 bit and 16 bit Toy Story games push the limits of whatever hardware they're on. It's fitting because of how the movie was groundbreaking in it's time.
The original Toy Story was a technical revolution by being the first computer animated movie and Toy Story racer was a technical revolution on the gameboy color by having prerendered 3d computer graphics ... i see where this is going
so glad I found that MartialHorror video on HVGN, or I may have never seen one of the greatest content creators on RUclips. still finding great games to talk about to this day
I'm not sure why I thought this was a video about a 3D Gameboy Printer accessory and I was so confused.
Holy shit! I bought x-scape in middle school and dumped probably 150 hours into it. I had no idea that its roots went so far back! Amazing video!
I really need to get X one day, such a good oddity for the Gameboy for how amazing it runs
oh, hey! it kinda warms my heart whenever I see the NintendoWorldReport forums elsewhere. there was a point I was an avid poster in their Podcast discussion forum.
Can't wait for "I Can't Believe It's 3DS FPS!"
I remember playing the SNES version of Faceball 2000 with a friend many years ago, and we jokingly called it "Pac-Man with guns" or something like that. lol
2:52 Why am I not surprised that Jeremy Parish was the genius to arrange this?
you really should talk about max payne on gba, it has shitton voice acting and is surprisingly accurate port of the original PC version too
I made a topic in some forums recently asking for gameboy recommendations and someone said X.
I see you with that Animated Blitzwing. 👌
There's something neat on how you say "you'd expect it to come with" at 4:56
finna sounded like he rolled the "come with" in that sentence.
That's because he said "come at," not "come with." Lol. "...expect it to come at the cost of actual gameplay,"
I.e. You'd expect the gameplay to suck since the 3-D graphics are so impressive.
@@nthgth You right. I meant the way he pronounces it so fast.
This was a great episode. I'd love to try 16 person Faceball
Disparaging Sewer Shark should be a crime. That game is AMAZING.
Nigel Mansell's World Championship looks really awesome on original Gameboy. Feels like real 3d.
My little brother had Faceball 2000 on the GB when we were kids. That game sucked my butt.
Wow the level of technology was alot better on gameboy than I thought
Talk about unusual euphemisms lol
Yes! Transformers Animated Blitzwing for the winning cameo
The lead at Slytherin turned out to be untrustworthy. Huh. You don't see that at Hufflepuff Studios.
No one ever talks about how GB Faceball 2000 has a Game Gear port with a slightly better framerate and actual colors! The more you know.
Been as gentle as he can be (insert montage of him just attacking the package with various power tools).
Faceball 2000 highlights the biggest issue with the Nintendo Switch: No Link Cable
Thanks for videos like this! I’ve found lots of neat games like this that I wouldn’t have known about otherwise. I’ve managed to get a copy of both X and racedrivin’ off EBay. They’re pretty good.
I honestly can't believe the plague of every FPS protagonist having Wolverine's healing powers started on the GB. -_-
Faceball 2000 was before COD, regenerating health wise, but that was also before Hydlide
I mean, medkits can't heal dozens of bullet wounds instantaneously either.

Right

I knew you were a man of good taste, good ol Transformers Animated Blitzwing.
Also X should have been about Blitzwing.
My honorable mention: Campionship Motocross 2001 in GBC
Cannon Fodder GBC intro is my personal nightmare fuel
I appreciate what you're trying to say, that 3D as we know it today has had a slow evolution, but 3D games have existed in some form almost as long as video games.
Elite, an open world space trading sim, came out in 1984. (It was ported to the NES, incidentally.) SubLogic started making flight simulators in 1979. Battlezone was a tank game, a big arcade hit in 1980.
These games are what I thought GBC looked like in my head when I was 7
I love this channel. you are so enthusiastic and full of passion. If you are ever in Orlando, we can go retro shopping!
I love punching weight derek, but i miss your reviews and retrospectives! The dino crisis, parasite eve and sweet home videos are my favourites!
Interesting how X has a lot of similar elements to Star Fox 2. Given it was made by Argonaut, maybe X was a proof of concept for some of their ideas?
Championship Motocross 2001 featuring Ricky Carmichael on the GameBoy Color is a game you have not mentioned yet. It is 3D and it uses FMV to create the tracks.
Toy Story Racer is definitely the best example how 3D looks like on the Gameboy Color. I really loved it.
That Yakuza shirt is so powerful it’s broken your white balance
Race Drivin is actually the inspiration for GTA stunt races
Wow so an old unreleased GBC game managed to eventually come out? Now if only they could do that for Katakis 3D, a really impressive looking GBC rail shooter that was never released.
That's the kind of videos I really enjoy :) Ok, I already knew about all of these games, but it's always pleasant to see someone presenting them. Oh and nice use of the Mercenary Force music; I think it's a really good game ! ;)
PS: Tiertex also made Championship Motocross 2001 feat. Ricky Carmichael on GBC using the same FMV technology.
Slitherine software that name rings a bell I think they were involved with the tv series Deadliest warrior
Pokemon Puzzle League for N64 might be worth a look. To my knowledge it's the only N64 game with full VHS quality FMV cutscenes.
faceball 2000 on gameboy: 16 PLAYER MULTIPLAYER
halo 5 on xbone: im sorry i cant do 2 player split screen :(
5:51 front buffer rendering, you'll see each line being drawn if it missing VBlank (which will likely happen if you're doing 3D on such weak hardware)
9:49 Oh my God, I remember this game from when I was a little kid! It was the only GBC game I played besides my sister's _Alice in Wonderland_ game.
10:46 Wow... even back then, Bo Peep was kickass. :)
Sadly, one of the two developers that made Asterix & Obelix XXL on the GBA, Fernando Velez, passed away in 2016.
SSFF: *makes PW*
Ti-Boy CE: *YOU DARE FORGET ABOUT ME?*
Absolutely in love with the Yakuza shirt
and here i was just about to boot up Earthbound again to continue my playthrough of it
a new SSFF dropping is a really weird coincidence lol
