It's to show that his power trip and confidence was all a delusion he'd built by being invincible as a cop. Once his tenure expired and an organization that doesn't give a fuck if he's a Fed or not caught up to him his entire delusion started to crumble. Losing the respect of the Eses was pure coincidence because Hoyte saved his niece. He had already lost the respect of the homies in the Jungle so all that was left was his job and once he was face to face with another Detective who was well within his rights to shoot his ass it all came crumbling down. Good examples of fragile egos coming down are this, GTA 4 when you kill Vlad, and GTA 5 when you kill Devin. I'm speaking specifically of their individual personalities and their fate after testing their own deitious delusions

Denzel's acting, from his facial expressions, his multitude of raw emotions and gestures/mannerisms was absolutely supreme. My God, this was his best movie. He really made you hate him but you couldn't help but like him. You paid attention to every single second of detail in this scene, thats how captivating he was. You wanted Ethan to win but you didn't want Denzel to die. He was too superb to exit the movie. And when he did, it was bittersweet and you know it had to go down that way. Man was a Devil but in the most entertaining fashion possible. A movie character hadn't grabbed my attention after this for a while until seeing Daniel Day Lewis in There will be Blood and then Ledger's performance as The Joker in Dark Knight. We live in a generation of amazing actors and the best part is that you can always go back and rewatch these films over and over again. To this day I wish I could've seen Godfather 1 in theaters but I wasn't born yet. You gotta appreciate the work and dedication actors put into a scene. Literal blood, sweat and tears in this one. Bravo.

@wn nfr Hrw All the movies you mentioned were also typical Denzel. Denzel being Denzel. In the same way Jack Nicholson plays Jack Nicholson in every movie. In some movies, what makes Denzel break out is his raw emotion of acting. You Know its Denzel, but man, you feel this is Really happening to him in real life. It is just so raw that its almost captivating and leaves you in awe. I do 100% agree with you that of the movies you mentioned, for Me, Flight he was probably at his Least typical Denzel I'd say. And the Committee hearing where he admitted he was Drunk was absolutely pure. So in that movie he stood out a lot. I guess I just like Denzel's signature swagger, from the way he walks and talks to the way he becomes violent or comforting, so I am being personally biased to say that in Training Day he exceeded expectations in all those categories for me. As a Good guy, Denzel's personality can be smooth and cold. But when he played a villain, he was even colder. Scary. Intimidating. And very unsettling. He was Satan with a Badge. His manipulation, foresight and sense of showmanship to boost all that was incredible. This guy convinced me (like he did Hoyt) that all the Horrible shit he was doing was ok. He successfully justified it all the way to the end. He never felt like a true villain to me but maybe an Anti hero. He had me so convinced that it shocked me when he killed Sandman and then tried to have Hoyt killed in the end. To me, that was a different Denzel, or maybe I am probably biased to great actors playing villains because to me that is when they really shine. And Denzel was no different.

@@KtotheGNo truth in that at all. And calling it best actor is not only disrespectful but ignorant, there is no such category. Called LEADING actor. The awards are more or less equal, depends on thr performance, size and quality. Walz winning for Inglorious while Penn won for Milk, who remembers Milk today? Bardem,Ledger,Del toro and more giving more impressive performances than the leads. Actors also end up in supporting if they are marginally less known, like Ethan here, while Hopkins won the leading actor Oscar for a supporting turn with 16 minutes of screentime.
