I love how the gang members/neighborhood backed jake because they may not like cops but they acknowledged that he was a real COP who genuinely wants to help people unlike Alonso who used his position of power to take what he wanted from who ever he wanted and ruled over them.
It's similar to what Micheal Franzee said about Donnie Brasco and FBI. The mafia did their job while the FBI did their job suppose to and they respected them for that.
Sad truth is that a lot of people will gravitate towards someone that is right and has honor, even if they have a different background. Problem is that a lot of people don't have honor today.
This is why I love Denzel. Everything he does has purpose. When he says "You think you can do this shit" and immediately screams out "Jake" again as a cry for help. Denzel used his best asset in this scene and it didn't bail him out. FEAR. He tried to make them fear him once again but it didn't work. He was the one afraid in this this time. He knew it was all over. Like a boss though he hid it well.
And all of this was ad libbed because the script was originally very messy in this scene but Denzel made sure it flowed well. That’s a next level actor
A lot of black people were mad Denzel got an Oscar for this and not Malcolm x, but the thing is, he killed this role, and it was an unexpected character for him, being he always played the nice guy in movies, minus SOilder Story n Glory. And also, just like he did in X, what's so amazing about this scene and through out the movie, 90% of his lines were unscripted
I wasn't mad. It was a brilliant piece of acting. He's an actor and plays characters for a living. What they want him to wear a white ten-gallon hat. I guess they didn't see "American Gangster" either.
i believe he still deserved an oscar for both because in X he had to play multiple characters because malcolm x underwent a lot of changes in his life and denzel had to make all four major phases (criminal life, prison, time in the nation and the times before death) all believable
LMAO!!!!! People be tripping me out!!! If he didn’t win some will say he was cheated... I saw both n training day left a impression because it was out of skin n completely nothing like Denzel!! Mal X was good too but this roles was crazy for him!!!
The only reason people are mad is because he didn’t get one for Malcom X. *They could’ve just gave both!* But no, and now it looks the way it looks, like they’ll only give Black man an Oscar for playing an asshole instead of a hero, and because it looks that way people are mad. I promise you, if he got one for X and this, no one would even care about this Oscar in a negative way. They’d say it’s brilliant, which it was, with no hesitation or predisposition.
It's so thrilling watching this scene not only having Denzel go ape shit in one of his few villainous roles, but how the villain of the film was completely destroyed. Beaten, humiliated and brought to heel with his own sense of justice being his undoing, all he could do is lash out at people who no longer feared him. They simply pitied him and turned their backs despite the authority he possessed because they knew he was a chump and a crook. He was hysterical because he knew he was a dead man walking without the money, and he had nobody else to turn to and nobody to exploit anymore. He may be murdered in the next scene, but the true death of the character is here. Excellent scene and acting here.
You can really see the desperation of a man at the end of his tether and backed up against the wall but who's still drunk on the power he's lost in this scene
This is a magnificent speech and a masterful delivery. One of the most iconic performances in Denzel Washington’s illustrious career. And this time he plays a villain, which is a rare feat.

I like that the G’s were nervous about their decision in this scene, not knowing for sure if they were picking the winning horse. But still making the right choice.
Simply one of Denzel's best all time roles. He should've won an Oscar waaaaaaayyy before this shit though. They have no excuse for him having to be the bad guy first before he got it when he has stellar roles left and right even before this.
This Scene in my Opinion Won the Oscar for Denzel! This Scene alone is Oscar Worthy in itself! This is Denzel's Best Scene ever of his acting career to me! Thank You Denzel for Blessing us with this amazing Cinematic Masterpiece 💯👏🏾💯⭐️🎬

What a phenomenal performance by Denzel. Honestly, seeing his transition in this scene as he realizes he’s lost his control over the situation/neighborhood etc was incredible.
This is the movie that solidified Denzel Washington's acting skills at its finest. Of course he can play the hero very well but to play a bad guy, better yet, a crooked cop so convincingly blew my mind. You cant help but the think "damn he played the role so well!"
