    My father bought a blue and gold macaw named Rico from a pet store when I was 8 years old in 1983. Macaws are definitely 1 person birds. First he bonded with my mother but she developed allergies so then I became his primary care giver and he bonded to me and wanted nothing to do with my mother. He ended up never bonding to my dad.
    While Rico's cage wasn't too small, it wasn't big enough. However every day he had time to spend outside of it, hanging around with me. Even on my busiest days he got out at least for a bit of time while I cleaned and changed his water and did other things. He never plucked out his feathers at all so I suppose that was a sign I was doing some things right, although I know birds can still have anxiety issues without doing that.
    It was a privilege to have Rico in my life and I will always be grateful for it, but I would never do it again unless I had at least as big a room for the bird as you have there, at least one other bird for companionship, and the time and finances to care properly for them. They deserve no less and the responsibility of caring for birds like these is a huge one, they should never be taken on as a pet by anyone who doesn't understand that.
    I'm so glad there are wonderful people like you where birds who need it can be given the care they deserve.
    Thank you!

    Love the birdroom Jessi. I have a cockatiel rescue bird named "Baby" and I have had him for 22 yrs. I got him from a bird rescue and his name is Baby and he was around 3-6 months old when he was given to me in 1997 and while he can no longer fly he is very spoiled and still talks and is on my shoulder for at least 6-8 hours a day when I am home.

    I love seeing Zoe in vids. She always makes me think of my grandparent's Red Lored, Ivy. That said, I'm immediately reminded that Ivy isn't normal by Zoe because she's a little on the small side and has a malformed beak that was caused by improper care and neglect from her previous owners, and we're assuming something hereditary.

    So cool! I'm curious, is it possible/probable to have a big open cageless aviary-type room for the smaller birds like u have for the big ones? Or are their personalities too hectic to have that? I.e. they might get too riled up/territorial without set 'boundaries' and therefore fight? I know i've seen aviaries full of mixed parrot-types before, but i think it was with birds that had basically all grown up that way and not had such varried pasts, so that's why i'm asking about the fighting issue

    • @animalwondersmontana
      @animalwondersmontana  4 года назад +1

      Thanks for asking! I've tried many times to find a way to get everyone out of their enclosures, but it's just not a responsible option. Since all of our birds are different species and are rescues with a wide variety of past experiences, most of them do not get along in an open space. Some would flat out try to kill others, while others might just fight and cause minor injuries. It's nothing like simply opening their doors and letting them wander about. A good example of this is if I opened both Amazon parrot's doors and let them just be out together, Chongo would try to be Zoe's friend and repeatedly come close. Zoe is aggressive toward him and would end up seriously injuring him. Another example is Chopsticks the Quaker parrot who is extremely aggressive with all other birds and would seek out harming anyone else he perceived was in his territory. Accidentally leaving a door unlatched is real nightmare fuel. Realistically a door left open would most likely end in a toe being bitten off and possibly even a life lost. The pairings we currently have are celebrated and I'm so glad the macaws accept each other as roommates, otherwise it would be very challenging to house them well.
      I'm really excited about the outdoor space we have set up for them now because the ones that get along can be on the same perch, while others can still be out but on a different perch. All the new and constantly hanging stimuli helps to break up any issues they might have with each other as well, so it's perfect for partially mingling the flock.

    How do you keep the birds from flying away outside? :)

    • @keianna5106
      @keianna5106 4 года назад +5

      parrots are social animals so generally they want to stay with their owners and other birds they live with, only untame/underhandled birds actively want to escape but even bonded birds might run if something scares them and are just unable to find their way home. OFC there is exceptions this is just a general viewpoint from my exp.

    • @jax5191
      @jax5191 4 года назад +4

      Some people have harnesses for birds to take them out on their shoulder without them flying off. If you're bonded really well then you can train your bird to fly around and come back.

    • @cassiushumqua7301
      @cassiushumqua7301 4 года назад +10

      Because macaws can be very aggressive and can hurt the bunnies. Also, they'd poop on the bunnies, and also not very clean. (Im not quite sure if that was a serious question or not, sooo)

    • @OliviaGrace721
      @OliviaGrace721 4 года назад +3

      They are two VERY different species and they have different housing and diet requirements. Putting them together would be extremely chaotic and unsanitary. Also, macaws can be very finicky and would probably act aggressively towards the bunnies if they got particularly scared.

      Toucans will sometimes prey on smaller birds, so it could be stressful for the little ones if Zeema lived full time in the Bird Room. Also, she needs a huge amount of space so she just wouldn't fit with our current setup. Lastly, our flock is AVB positive and Zeema may not be, so she's kept separate for safety.

    Do you ever listen to music/podcasts while taking care of the animals to block out the noise/pass the time? When I took care of the animals at work, I would go crazy if I couldn’t listen to my podcasts. I needed some kind of noise going on. Of course there’s times to just focus on the animals, but during routine cleaning and chores do you listen to things as well?

      I go through so many audiobooks every month. I also have albums specifically for cleaning energy. I also drive a lot to get to our public presentations, so there's plenty of time there too. It makes the tedious tasks so much better.

    What happens if the bunnies get in with the macaws? I can understand keeping them from the falcon (you do have a falcon, don't you? or was it a hawk?), but macaws?

    Does Animal Wonders ever attract any natural predators native to Montana? Some farmers I know watch out for coyotes, foxes, eagles, hawks etc. Are you worried at all about hawk attacks when you take the parrots outdoors?

      We keep a lookout wherever we have animals outside and open to a potential predator attack. Our local red tailed hawk family stays away from us scary humans, so just our presence keeps the birds safe.

      That was the ever lovely (and loud) Zoe! Steve for sure joins in, but he doesn't have the lung power that Zoe has so he couldn't disrupt in the same fashion that Zoe does 😄
