    Pellets should make up 70% of a parrot's diet. Amounts will look different depending on the size of the bird and the size/shape of the pellet used.

    I like how Scarlet observed your interaction with Joy and learned (at least a little bit) from it. The most important thing she noticed was probably that she had to get the paper with the nut inside over to her food bowl so she could set it down without dropping it.

    I'm always so impressed by the way you care for the animals. As a child my grandmother said to me regarding pets that I should always keep in mind that although they were just a part of our lives, we were the main focus of theirs. She explained that they don't have school (work), friends, hobbies or other distractions and it would be unfair for us to spend even a day ignoring them. Throughout my life I have tried to always remember that lesson she imparted. I think of that when I see how focused you are on thinking of the daily lives of the animals under your care.

    I work in an accredited aviary with ~30 parrots, and this is really good advice that would meet our current standards! We're also always looking for ways to improve welfare for the birds. Parrots are a lot of work - this is just the effort that goes into feeding them! Thanks for sharing tips to improve the lives of animals!

    • @wildog47
      @wildog47 5 лет назад +1

      yes. I have always wanted a parrot. but since I'm gone 8 hours a day I feel it's not fair. I've been looking into social independent birds that wouldn't mind being home alone but there isnts too many. any suggestions? I was thinking a blue headed pionus. they would get weekends of e richment and I'd rotate the toys and food hiding enrichment. In the evening would get 3 hours of interaction too.

    • @BioBush
      @BioBush 5 лет назад +2

      @@wildog47 Pionus are parrots too, just smaller! So all the parrot things like intelligence and time still apply. If I ever got a bird it would probably be a zebra finch. Shorter lifespan, less social. And I would adopt, because there's so many birds out there whose guardians are looking to rehome.

    • @sharathyadav954

      @@BioBush A well cared zebra finches can live up to a decade & more right ?

    • @BioBush
      @BioBush 4 года назад +1

      @@sharathyadav954 I think so. Their average lifespan is about 5 years, so a long-lived one would be a little more than double that. But just like every human doesn't live up to 100+ years old, not every bird reaches the species' maximum age. Good question!

    • @sharathyadav954
      @sharathyadav954 4 года назад

      @@BioBush Yea, compared to female finches especially egg laying one, male finches are more potential to live longer if they are kept in good conditions like healthy diet & natural enrichments, exercise(flying), sleep(12 hrs), well cleaned husbandry, although if they are not inbreed birds from good family gene. these is what I collected the feedbacks from finch keepers. Of course there are so many other facts can also impacts on their lifespan. Like they can be very easily stressed out & very skittish birds. But I love them 💖

    Don't worry! I just built a huuuuge two-storey terrarium for my tortoise :D I also learnt from you that hiding food gives the animal fun things to do during the day. Now my tortoise is super good at finding his greens. I only put a small portion in his actual feeding dish. Thanks to you I also focus now much more on reading his body language and I think it's working! He is now much calmer when I handle him. Success! You're such a joy to watch. I was raised with a strict religion: You NEVER get an animal that is completely dependent upon you for his/her (never "it") every need, without making CERTAIN you are committed to busting your backside to MEET HIS/HER *EVERY* NEED for his/her ENTIRE LIFE.
    And I have never let any of them, or myself down. And they are the great joy of my life. I've been SO fortunate to advocate, educate, fundraise, rescue & rehab, volunteer and work with some of the most fascinating, incredible and inspiring people. It's also been lots and lots of heartache. I had to stop after 30 years due to burnout and serious PTSD. One of the things I love about Jessie so much, is that she is still able to maintain a good attitude about people. I became suspicious of everyone I didn't know.
    You're fabulous, Jessie. Thank you for your healing (in so many ways) passion, joy and life's work.

    Do you build you own macaw toys? I can't find suitable parts for large birds in my favorite bird stores, and I was wondering if you knew a website where I could buy some.

    I looked on the back of the zupreem natral pellets, the ones it looks like you're using for your large birds, and i found ground corn as its first ingredient, and sugar in the top ten. I got the food origanly becuse i herd zupreem was a good brand-and i think it is- but i was told you shouldn't give your bird sugar, and i was also told to keep the fat content low and the fiber high for my eclectus. Should i keep her on the zupreem or is there another pellet you recamend for her?

    Hey Jessi
    So. I live in Rio de Janeiro and i have a Turquoise-fronted amazon parrot as well as two cockatiels and two parakeets.
    In december through march, we experience a very hot summer and, while the aussie birds seems to be fine with the heat, the south american cousin doesn't seem to cope so well.
    i give them baths weekly, but how can i assure they all will get a more comfortable summer?

    Do you cook yams and sweet potatoes before you give them to the birds? I've heard that they should be cooked. Also, Harrison's and TOPS pellets are good also. My birds love the TOPS pellets.

    Do you usually serve the veggies raw, blanched, cooked or how?
    I am still struggling to get my lovebirds to eat chop - so far they like pellets, seeds and grains, but if I try to mix they will always pick out only what they like (last trick I use was having chop and supplements mixed with a little rice since it's kinda sticky but they know how to pick it out)
    Should I just make it into porridge? They still like handfed formula (I think)

    We don't have bird pellets here so I have to feed them with seeds and fruits/vegetables. I use Prestige seeds for medium parrots (I have a Crimson Rosella and an Eastern Rosella), also I give them millet and they looove it!
    Could you please tell me if the pellets are really necessary for my birds? It's so hard to get them here :(

    I have a question. I know dairy is a no go, but is plant based milk also a bad idea (I ask bc I make myself overnight oats with oats, soy milk or flax milk, chia seeds and water and wanted to know if this is good or bad for my macaw to eat)

    If we have parrots again, can we give them half pellets and half freeze dried blend of veggies for parrots? I know it is more expensive than making them on our own, but in this case we might choose saving time over saving money. Then also mix in a small amount of freeze dried medicinal plant parts for parrots like certain flowers and roots to treat/ prevent minor aliments?

    How much do you feed your cockatiel? (Pellets, fresh foods and seeds) I just got a cockatiel and want to get a rough idea of the amount I should feed it.

    I usually just get store bought parrot food for African Grey's and then give him veggies and fruits every day. I give him raw peanuts with the shell as a treat. I don't give him any pellets, should I be changing that?

    My bird has been surviving on mostly seed mix and water. I can get and prepare the resources mentioned here, but I don't know how to introduce it to my bird. Can I please have some advice?
