- 4R44E Shift Kit Installation, on this video we will see the upgrades that can be done to this valve body with, or without the purchase of a shift kit.
We will concentrate on the Shift Kit Installation on this video, but keep in mind that there are other sources that you can get your information from for a successful repair.
This 4R44E shift kit I'm using is one of my personal favorites, since is straight to the point and easy to install. Although the steps that you see here I've seen them before and applied them to my repairs, they've made small changes to make them their own.
As always, I share with you what has been working for me with success, and this is one of them.

I'm going thru my spare 4R44E for my truck right now. The push lug was broken off my reverse band.
The barrel is loaded now... all I have left is the installation of this kit.
I wisely took your advise and ordered the rear needle bearing that falls apart as well as all the bands when I bought my kit.

I have a 2000 3.0 ranger with a 4r44e. I had a 2-3 shift flare, and did a little research on what causes it. I found that a blown valve body, as well as an EPC solenoid can cause it. I also found that a "fix kit" made by trans-go is also very effective in fixing the problem. Today I did everything in this video, replaced the EPC solonoid and installed the trans-go kit. Put everything back together carefully, and guess what? NO FLARE. I am very happy, thank you for this great video it was extremely helpful.

Thanks Hiram. Your tear-down and inspection video, along with your pump alignment and valve body shift kit installation made my overhaul a snap. My 5r55e broke the reverse band after 175K. The tip of the servo also was damaged. My transmission had no reverse servo spring so I put it back together without one. Everything work perfectly right away. I used the orange spring in the trans-go kit. Shifting is firm but not harsh. Reverse applies like it should. I followed the directions and made the shift plate hole smaller with the two balls. You rock.

just finished rebuilding one and also done the transgo shift kit all forward gears work good except reverse some times other works and some times it doesn't what do think is wrong or where can I start to get this fix...
Thanks for video. I did everything the instructions told me. But when i re installed. . The 2007 ford ranger 2.3 goes from 1st gear to 3rd gear. And then 4th and 5th. Reverse is fine. I had my scanner hooked up and seen the gear i was in start at 1st then when shifted at 2,000 rpm it went to 3rd. 1st and 2nd work when i put it in low gears on selector shift. But when driving normal it does that. Any advice would be appreciated
Hi Hiram....I just recently had my transmission rebuilt....however.... in reverse it was taking 10 seconds then bucking hard before and now even after the transmission was rebuilt..... What do I look for myself in solving the bucking problem myself....Thanks.
did the aluminum plug and check balls come with that kit? if not where can I find the right size? what size are the plugs? I found some 6mm ball bearings on amazon for check balls but can't figure out what size aluminum plug to use.
I just changed the fluid and filter on my 98 ford ranger now it makes a whining noise not loud but noticeable any ideas?

Hi Hiram, did you have a video about assemblig a 5R55E. I am on the way to inspect my spare tranny, but there are a lot of questions comming up. Which are the best friction and steel to order, which parts must be replaced, and so on.

What's the difference when installing the orange and the yellow together? Does it make the transmission act different? Last longer? So on...
Hi I just changed the valve body gasket but when I put it back together all of my gears became drive
I put this kit on my 4r44e and still had delayed reverse engagement . with master rebuild kit.
I tried replacing the valve body gasket, did not find any rip in the old one, put on the new added the high strength spring for reverse from the kit and still had delayed engagement.
Takes 30 seconds or so to engage.
Drove for a year or so.
Yesterday i shifted from drive to rev fast and hit the gas a little and pop no reverse now.
All forward gears and coast cluth work normal.
When i put it into rev it slips and rolls back slowly give it gas it moves less.
So probably broke my band or my sprag.
Debating just getting a reman this time.
Extremely hard metal on metal clanging on 2-3 shift if on the gas pedal medium fuel if I backed off the gas when the shift came up it wouldn't slam so hard.
I milked it for a long time a year or more.
Also developed a torque converter seal leak or oring leaks on the bell housing bolts one or other or both.unsure
Question, installing this kit, will it make it shift harder such as going to 2nd and 3rd? I ask because as a teen and put a shift kit in my turbo 400 and it would squeal the tires when it hit 2nd in my camaro. I am wanting to make sure it will shift harder as such before going through the trouble to install this. Let me know please. Thank you. And any chance you are locked in the Houston area?
so if this is the 4r44 i dont have a foot press and i have went through several trans classes

Hi Hiram. I was just looking at your video on the VB Upgrade with the shift kit from Transgo. SK 44R-55E, I just received my kit from transgo today and will install it into my 5R55E on my 1997 Ranger 4X4. AS A matter of fact, I am rebuilding my entire tranny, and 4.0 hov engine. While looking at the instructions I noticed that there are replacement rings for the support bearings/shaft. They are hard plastic and are cut on the ends. Also a spacer. I read the instructions but I fail to understand the reason for the change. Can u help me on this. I noticed you didn't, mention this on your video.

At 12:52 which way does the hockey puck go? Does the cavity face towards the transmission or towards the ground when installed?

Hi Hiram, I will be rebuild a 4r44e. out of a 1996 ford ranger with a 2.3l engine . I'll be towing a small 14foot boot and use it for work may do some hauling once in a while which shift kit would you recommend superior or the transgo that you used in this video for the 4r44e valve body

What's the main difference between the assembly lubes? Between the green, blue, red, and clear? Any specific time or place to use one over the other?

I have a 2006 Honda civic 140k and the transmission is giving me stuck on/off codes and sometimes with ought throwing a code i feel like it wont go into "overdrive" on the highway and when I got this car the fluid was extremely burnt.Should I rebuild or replace?
should i retorque my valve body bolts? and is it the gasket under the spacer plate? or the gasket up on case side? i dont really wanna drop the valve body and reque them tbh i rather rebuild the whole thing
did the whole kit was really hard to make the hole smaller with the two balls ... my truck still loses gear when i come to a stop i cant figure it out .. any ideas ..
Mine does that when the engine is cold. I figured out if i level the transmission fluid to max level of the crosshatch area while cold, it doesnt do that. But it is higher when it gets warmed up. I guess there is an internal leak somewhere.
Hola Sr. Hiram espero se encuentre muy bien, segui su consejo de aflojar el cuerpo de valvulas y apretarlo con 92,5 inc/lib , el aceite es nuevo, pero vi mezclado con el aceite una sustancia negra en la bandeja, no habia pedazos de hierro o aluminio pero no se que pueda ser esto, ya que la caja fue reparada, la maneje y siento un poco mas suave pero sigue al hacer stop , jumping ( saltando o golpeando las velocidades, voy a cambiar las universal joint o crucetas, aver si es eso, gracias

Can this kit be added if i have a bonded valve body gasket? Like the separator plate is attached (glued i think) to the gasket material on both sides.
Also, what portions of this upgrade can i do without purchasing the kit?

I know this is an old video, but I'm hoping you may be able to help me out...I was in the process of putting in this shift kit and got done and went to drive it. It won't shift into overdrive now, and when you get on the highway when it would normally shift into OD it starts flashing the O/D off light. What could have I done wrong and do I need to buy a new valve body now?
Race 5/31/20 i am dealing with this same issue on a 96 Ranger 2.3 4r44e with almost 400k on it and one rebuild,not a reman.I have modded the truck with an explorer dash that give me an Od idiot light and tach,no issues with the swap other than recalibating the temp gauge .i also have a jones twin turbo round muffler on it,the best I have found for minimal drone and no where near the fart can /glass pack you hear on most 4 cylinders so between the tech and the pitch /light i can see that with the Od workin the rpms drop almost 1000 at 70mph give or take so its guzzliing gas right now with the A C runnin. debating on whether to swap the truck to stick or fix this by replacing not just the Od solenoid but all 4, might as well, there is another part though you should check thats some kind of lock ,the code shown is that the od shift solenoid is stuck in the off position and something was mentioned about the tq convertor not locking but other then a slipping very hard shift 2 to 3 the truck has given me solid 5 hour commutes since the rebuild under 2 years ago until both these problems have gotten worse.my trans shop is reputable and i plan on goin back for this as i am decent mechanic but i leave auto trans missions to a specialist. solenoid can be checked with a meter 20-30 ohms being good but it can be the bores they ride in.i also have years of machinist skills so i get what is bein said but if you goggle 4r44/55 e known solnoid problems all this pops up and they seem to be the bane of these trans,hence my thinkin of swapping to a stick. the tremex 4 cyl early ranger trans would be my choice as i am building a turbo 2.3 for the truck.its that nice bein in the south and 2 owners but the mazda 5 speed stick will be fine and can be had for a couple hundred.. theres is also an upgrade kit as you see here with hiram, worth doin if you plan to stay auto. but my adive to any ranger owner being a long time ford truck guy and with 4 decade of experience buy the stick ranger and with the pre 2001 cast iron 2.3. the 3.0 is junk so if v 6 is your thing go with the 4.0 that has alot of power upgrades available.
Thanks for the great videos. Very well done. Question, what's your opinion on when to change out solenoids? Do you have an opinion on their life cycle? I've read 40,000 miles on some. Others say they rarely go out. I only test them with my volt meter for proper ohms (20-35 I was told) and check them with a 9 volt battery to make sure they click. How do you check the ones you test and at what mileage do recommend replacement? The Transgo SK 44-55E Shift Kit commented the EPC solenoid wears out and should be replaced and if you've got 2-3 gear flair, the SS2 next to the EPC can cause it and should be replaced as well. Thanks for this information. I was wondering if I can ask you a question about my 4r44e transmission is causing me problems. I am getting no codes displayed in the code reader. Yes it is one that reads the transmission also. The issue I am having. My truck shifts in gear fine reverse and forward. I can drive with no issues until it gets warmed up. Then I will be driving along shift okay until it get to 4th or 3rd. Then my rpms goes up and down like the transmission is slipping. And it also has rough shifting. Like I said I get no codes from the reader. and only does after it gets warmed up. I seen your video and thought maybe it is that gasket is going bad. I did change the filter. Transmission fluid is red no burnt smell. No Metalic in the pan. So i am reaching out to you to get your input. Thank you for your time. My truck is a 1999 Ford Ranger XLT 3.0l flex.

I just install this kit in my 2000 explorer 5r55e and now I have more problems , when the transmission downshift from 2 to 1 gear , jerks , so I don`t know what happend it wasn`t do it before install this kit . Help !!!!!!
cesar ruedas does it still do that? If so then take it to a shop and have them reset the live memory with their scan tool.

I have a 96 Explorer 4.0 2wd with a 4R55E trans... anyway, it drives just fine in D but when its cold it has no reverse. After about 20 minutes of driving reverse will work perfectly. Im also getting a DTC for the Turbine Speed Sensor. Any ideas as to what it could be?
IAMKING696969 I have the same problem with my 96 ford explorer 2wd 4r55e only when it's cold out but once it goes into gear I'm good from there until it sits over night in the cold again any luck fixing that thanks alot.

Hello Hiram. After watching a few of your videos I have a couple questions. Which do you prefer in the shift correction kit for the 5r55e, transgo or superior?
Superior appears to have a few extra correction parts than the transgo does including addition al wiring. Also, do you only use wd-40 when assembling a transmission?

Hiram, thank you so much! Your videos are great! Just finished the transgo shift kit, which cured a lot of things, but it still appears that it jumps from 1st to 3rd, and my o/d light is still flashing. What would be the next thing to look at?
Galen Nelson same issue on my 05 ford explorer 5r55s trans says low circuit solenoid c its not the solenoid the tcc temp flow valve is damn near welded to body check that might have got pretty hot

***** Are you talking about using the two check balls to hammer the hole smaller? You talk about that at 1:00. I did that part if that is what you are talking about.
+Anthony Shelton You could try leaving out the servo spring. Mine didn't have one from the factory. Another transmission guy told me some don't have it because it can alter pressures.
