    I remember in the early eighties, in a rust-free '69 Beetle (the dealer had undercoated it), I put together a 17??cc dual port engine with a taller cam and the bugspray carb. I live in a hilly area, and it took very little throttle to maintain 60-65mph on those long uphill grades. Such a big improvement; couldn't believe it. My next door neighbor had a '70 stock Beetle and I could pull away from him in the hills with no problem whatsoever. Along came a sweet college student gal who had to have it, and I needed some cash so I sold it to her. Saw her a few months later and she still had a big smile on her face. Don't know why she was so obsessed with it but clearly she was living a dream. Felt good for her.

    • @VWJawbreaker
      @VWJawbreaker  3 года назад

      It’s amazing how much a larger engine can improve the drivability of these old cars. Stock engines are good if you live in a flat area and stay on old back roads.
      Cool story about your bug, sucks you had to sell it but it sure sounds like she loved it!!

    Allright Brother!!! You did a wonderful job!!! I admire how you jumped right back in and tore the engine down! Stroker crank make a HUGE difference in torque, I believe it is so worth it. It sounds very nice, that’s evident in the video. And the smile on Levis’ face really proved it, LOL. You get a heavier pressure plate and you’ll be perfectly fine. That’s just a very small hurdle in all honesty. Congrats Gary, I am very happy for you!!!! Job very well done!!!

    The last 2054 I built had the following.
    Mahle pistons
    Forged CW crank
    5.3 H beams
    CB round ports 42 x 37
    Mag case
    FK8 on 1.4 rockers with EMPI straight cut gears
    45 Dells
    30mm Melling pump full flowed
    Stage 1 Kennedy with upgraded disk, lightened flywheel.
    That's my favorite size to build. Other than that I like 2276's but they're too wide for a stock engine compartment.
    Your engine sounds fantastic. I'm glad you're sharing this experience with your son.

    I love these cars. I currently own a 72, but wish these cars came with an overdrive with wlth stroker motors though it was under powered stock, but could always swap in some sort of Porsche or aftermarket transaxle.

    • @VWJawbreaker
      @VWJawbreaker  4 месяца назад

      There is a Berg 5 speed that’s an option however 5th gear is more like your current 4th gear….. remember the engine is air cooled so you need the rpm’s up to make the fan cool properly.

    • @TBGaels32
      @TBGaels32 4 месяца назад +1

      I was thinking more along the lines of a 901 (which is a 4 speed from the 914) or a 915 or a G50 from the Porsche 911.
      The Air cooled motors like RPM, which is why they are/have a lot of torque. I just like the idea of the 5th gear at highway speeds and don’t want to be screaming at 3000+ RPM. But I guess it just depends on gearing in the transaxle. So the the extra gear would help when you’re going to a bigger displacement in either the type 1 or type 4 motor

    • @VWJawbreaker
      @VWJawbreaker  4 месяца назад

      @@TBGaels32 true but going down the highway you need 3k + rpm to keep the heads and engine cool.

    my dad was obsessed with the 1700cc (85.5mmX74mm-1699cc) he would playfully argue the 1700 is what VW should have made not the 1600cc, because the 74mm crank gives u more streetable torque down low through mid-range. for years i tried to get him to go to 90.5mm piston with his 74mm crank. he would go into his cylinder walls are too thin spill, number 3 piston blah blah blah tell i should him the aftermarket cases and how a 90.5mm walls are not thinner than a stock 85.5mm, plus u can use a remote oil cooler to not burn up number 3 piston. so my dad built him a 1900cc (90.5X74mm-1904) in 05 and is still driving that same engine today, 10 of that was back and forth to work. thats for the vid

    • @VWJawbreaker
      @VWJawbreaker  Год назад

      74 or even the 76 stroke crank are underrated imo. Everyone wants to go to the big crank and I can understand why. Sometimes, like in this case, a larger crank wouldn’t have worked due to needing to buy stroker pistons.

    Fun to watch! Sounds great! What a feeling driving somthing you built yourself! Sounded so good when you drove back in the garage after your trip. Sorry if I missed it but what type of pushrods are you using? I run steel and when my old motor was hot it would get louder. But yours sounds good. How is the freeplay for your clutch? If it's too tight it will slip. For a clutch upgrade research a centre force disk with a Sachs bus 200mm or HD plate. Bus plate is a bit heavier than a beetle Pressure Plate. The centerforce is a 8 puck on the flywheel side and solid disk the other. Has a good grab but definatly smooth enough for daily driving. I have used 2 one from berg and one from cb. Both were the same. I run the hd Sachs disk on 1776 and smaller motors and a 1700lb Kennedy pp with the center force on my 2017 and have been happy with it on both motors. I run one on my 1600 single port right now and it's nice and easy not harsh at all. If your stock transaxle is in good shape I don't think it would be too harsh for it if you are easy on it. Just opinion there are so many choices out there.
    Again good job man! I will be watching for the next chapter. We might get to watch your son build us a motor before you know it.

    Gary, as you have increased motor size when do you need to consider heavier pressure plates and or transmission swap?

    • @VWJawbreaker
      @VWJawbreaker  4 года назад +3

      Mike Overturf pressure plate depends on how much torque the engine is putting out. For mild builds a good stock Sacs clutch is just fine. A stage 1 with a solid non spring disk should be all I need for this setup. A lot of people over clutch their cars and that causes more damage than good.
      I’m hoping the trans will be ok for a while but I may upgrade later down the road. A stock trans will handle more than you think as long as you aren’t dumping the clutch or dropping the hammer at a drag strip.

    Is your transmission using stock gearing in (4th) gear? Is seems like jawbreaker goes down the road at freeway speeds easily. My 72 feels like it is geared so low that it run high RPM trying to drive down the freeway. I just had a transmission rebuild with .82 4th gear, but haven't put it in yet. Would like to drive it a little before making the swap.

    • @VWJawbreaker
      @VWJawbreaker  2 года назад

      I’m not 100% sure to be honest. I believe it’s a freeway flier trans but it was in the car when I bought it. It does go down the highway very well but I also have a little taller tire in the rear as well which helps with the gear ratios.

      VWJAWBREAKER not trying to be a troll. But 2054 is not as common as 1641,1776,1835,1904,2110,2332 that’s 6 other combinations I personally feel are more common. Hence my asking about the exact build. Once again it seems like she would make more power up top compared to some of the other combinations with bigger jugs and smaller strokes

    • @VWJawbreaker
      @VWJawbreaker  4 года назад

      Badland Genetix I’m not going to disagree, those other combos are the most popular ones..... however a 2054 or a 2165, 2180 are also popular builds. 2054’s were featured in magazines years ago, it’s a simple stroker engine build. I would have preferred if it was a 2165 but I already had brand new Non stroker pistons sitting there, hence the 2054.
      The build description can be found in the description of the videos in the series. Let me know if you can’t find it and I’ll we if I can dig it up.
      This combo does pull hard up top with decent low and better mid power.... it’s all about the total engine combo. Hell, CB Performance was excited about the build lol

      VWJAWBREAKER that’s cool and makes since if I had brand new stock pistons sitting there I’d use them too. No reason to throw out good parts. Thanks for the more detailed description of power. I wasn’t trying to knock it at all just figure out why that combo over others. I’m weighing my options now for staying aircooled or going water. Looking at all combos now before I start

      Brian Seibert my answers will be an opinion, everyone views things differently.
      What heads will you be using? Single port / dual port? What carburetor will you be running? What is your intention for the car, occasional, weekend, daily driver?

      Brian Seibert Mofoco, CB Performance and many others are great places to buy one. Check your local area and see if they recommend someone. That way you can have them build it to suit your needs.
