Turbocharged Indy Royalty USAC 1978 - Trenton Speedway - Automobilista

- Опубликовано: 13 авг 2024
- The 1978 USAC season was the end of the Golden Era before the split which changed Indycar forever. Although tensions brewed behind the scenes, the Series had reached a high-point in technology, drivers and races. This was the era of Bobby Unser, Tom Sneva, Mario Andretti (when he wasn't racing F1), Johnny Rutherford, Gordon Johncock, Al Unser, and rookie Rick Mears just to name a few. The Indy 500 was the crown jewel, but Pocono, Michigan, Ontario, Milwaukee and Trention all held their own. And for the first time the series ventured abroad and onto road circuits with racing at Canada’s Mosport, and over to Europe with races at Brands Hatch and Silverstone to show a new audience what the American Indycars were all about.
Turbo-Charged, 900 horsepower, 200 miles per hour. This was USAC.

Rest in Peace Bobby Unser! I think he was too fast for me to catch today!
😁😁😁 man what a driver. Also what’s that intro song it’s stuck in my head?
Didn't know Bobby had died. 87 a good age. I always find racing drivers living to a ripe old age satisfying given how much danger they were in.
2 months ago, we lost al sr.
Another perfect balance of history and gameplay.
Exactly
Perfectly balanced, as all things should be.
This channel is more asmr than the whole Gran Turismo franchise
HAHA! Great comment!
Thank you very much for featuring our mod! Great video!
American Open Wheel Racing history is amazing!
No kidding. The cars were mental, the drivers insane, the crashes spectacular, 220 MPH... Damn son

(mostly) oval racing at its best!
I hate the fact Indycar is losing its roots.
(hello Tony :P)
@@X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X its just too dangerous in the minds of today's drivers. Hell, all the star talent from Europe refuses to race on any oval minus Indy... So Indycar has to adapt.
Its a pity, but what can you do? Hopefully Gateway, Indy and Iowa stay on/come back to the schedule in the future
@@dylanhale7300
Drivers said this decades ago as well. But I agree, it is a problem.
I hope so too, and perhaps Indycar fixes its pack racing issues which could lead to a return of the superspeedways.
@@X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X oval racing at it's finest is done on short tracks. the super speedway draft game is the opposite of racing.
If only Trenton survived through time, it would’ve been a true highlight of any season (and closest track to me). Track was a thorn in my back in Indy 500 Evolution
The grounds that the track was on is now the New Jersey Grounds for Sculptures. It is a very large art museum with indoor and outdoor exhibits on what used to be the track. What used to be the backstretch is partially a road for some housing that follows the track around the lake. The lake is still there and you can follow some of the track. There are a few structures that remain on the property from the fairground days.
Fantastic information about the history and technics about indy car for me, as I'm a huge fan of US-Motorsport ! As well as your videos of your races I'm always watching here on my big TV. No fading of colors, always a sharp picture! Feels like I'm sitting in the race cars !
10 of 10⭐ for your whole videos! Very entertaining!
Best wishes and stay healthy !
IMSA from the eighties are among my favourites.
Good stuff. As a long time ISO member I appreciate this! Will start 10th in our Indy 500 in Steve Krisiloff's Wildcat next weekend.
By the way, Turn 1 at Trenton was the inspiration for Turn 1 at Pocono...
Really didn't know that actually
Truly a unique and special race track. There is one five turn paved oval in northern Ohio, but it’s turns all go the same direction.
We need more oval built with originality and inspiration like Trenton, Nazareth, pocono and etc.
I was only introduced to Trenton's existence courtesy of David Land's videos during his award-winning Indy 500 Month strand, when yer man did career modes on Indy 500 Evolution. Now I know why UPS drivers drive so ludicrously fast, with scant regard to anyone else on the road.
Thank you gp. In some way you are helping me to heal after the passing of bobby unser. Thank you!
I didn't know Bobby past away.
@@jamesbehra2690 yeah mr behra sad news
USAC IndyCar, and Trenton??
YES, thank you for this!!!😍😍😍😍😍
Fantastic video yet again
great video !!! love this track and the cars also
I truly miss Trenton, which was one of the most challenging tracks ever. Combining it with the last season before CART and ground effects becoming so important made for great racing
This has to be one of the most unique tracks I ever seen it’s a cool track
These cars are, without a doubt, the epitome of the 1970s American racing!
I've said it for the last decade and I will continue to say it. We need another track built like Trenton Speedway. That would be an actual challenge for today's modern cars... Especially NASCAR.
Great track. Went to several IndyCar and NASCAR races there . . . and Langhorne.
That right kink must have made set ups a real challenge.
I love how the manifold pressure gauge is taken straight out of an airplane.
After watching this, I don't know if my eyes will let me go back to the ICR2 full race season...
Long live the Sugaripe Prunes Special!
Awesome, love some historic Indy. Only ever seen this track on Indy 500 Evolution on the Xbox 360. As well as more videos, I can smell a scent of a live online race...
Very cool video. I did not know that Automobilista 1 had modding. Excellent recreation. That entry into turn 3 looks like quite a drop. As always, I appreciate the history that you share as you drive. I did not recall that AJ Foyt was making his own engines at that time.
An incredible video, truly edge of the seat stuff, excellent 👍🏎🏁🍾
Here's hoping this is what the AMS 2 Racing USA part 2 and 3 package brings
Thank you for doing this!
Thx for the via and the race
Only managed to grab one race this season at the ISO league, but it was awesome!
Banger as always
Very good looking cars. I remember Gordon Johncock won an Indy 500 for only inches ahead of Rick Meats correct me if I'm wrong. These late seventies Indy cars are somehow unknown for me. Gotta digg something about them.
1982 indy 500! Classic finish
@@GPLaps That's it! 😁 Couldn't remember the year!
I greatly appreciate the effort you put into making these videos. I would imagine that many people, like me, immediately set about trying to download the mod, tracks etc. It has literally been an all-day effort on more than one occasion. The links you are providing often only lead to the correct site, but not the specific location. As a result hours of digging and searching is required. I would very much appreciate in future, if you are able to provide more specific links and an explanation of what components to download from each one. Thanks.
Loved the 1978 season. I knew the Ford Cosworth engine would dominate. I remember a couple years earlier, Al Unser (my fav driver) with Parnelli Jones introduced the Cosworth engine to Indy car racing.
Nice one!
I really like your Videos ...
I believe Turn 1 is in the Grounds for Sculpture, which is a very fun place to visit.
Apparently the foundation of the main grandstand (or parts of it) still exists as part of a courtyard or pedestals for some of the sculptures.
If you want to see all the many different configurations the speedway had over the years (and why the grandstands were so oddly oriented relative to the start/finish line and turn 1 areas), check out HistoricAerials.com. They also have great imagery of other American ghost tracks like Riverside, Langhorne, Meadowdale, Bridgehampton and...Stardust!
Great video! It makes me want to buy AMS.
You should. It's a really good sim with lots of great mods.
HE DOESNT MISSSSS
ISO represents!
You love to see it
@@augustwatring888 Well... I'm stepping in for Michael Drechsler for the Indy 500
@@KayoMichiels I saw, if you need any help getting that Fox to run any better I'm willing to lend a hand.
@@augustwatring888 thanks, i'm gonna do some extensive practise this thursday and friday.
Although races in 1979 and 1980 were run under the auspices of two sanctioning bodies, the formation did not cause a "split" in Indycar; there was only schedule of races and only one group of teams competing.
Pitting on the last lap is an interesting strategy...
Great video!
One can only wonder how great a modern Trenton would have become with indycar and NASCAR same as Englands Brooklands track had it been improved it’s tracks safety barriers and not been bugged up by ww2 etc etc…… loved these “hybrid “ ovals that weren’t rovals and I would include the old Rio oval also as why it didn’t have a right turn it had road course breaking and gear changing on a fast ish oval
Yeah, from around this period, I really do like the Chaparral 2K Pennzoil "Yellow Submarine" that Johnny Rutherford drove for a few seasons, taking the Indy 500, and I think the CART title as well, in 1980.
The 1973 cars in some cases were actually still faster than what we saw in '78. I think the lap record at Texas World Speedway from '73 still stands, even though, sadly, I don't think that track does anymore.
The front straight at Trenton was at an angle compared to this when it was still in 1.0-mile form, so that's why the entry to T1 on this 1.5-mile layout is a bit odd, not to mention the dogleg on the back side of the circuit.
The turbine-engined cars were absolutely horrific for lag, so you had to use throttle and brake concurrently to slow down but keep the motor spooled up enough.
Love this mod!!!!
Oh yus! I actually really loved the look of these cars.
So is Axelson Sr. gonna be racing in these era of Indycars? Would be awesome to watch a full season of this!
Many thanks for your great collection of nostalgic sim racing vids. I'm particularly interested in Indy oval racing and especially enjoyed to 78 USAC edition. Unfortunately ISO no longer has the mod file ( I confirmed it with a visit to their FTP server and a discussion with an ISO member-who also no longer has the mod). If you have the mod, would it be possible to put in up on Race Department? Again thanks for your excellent work.
I might have missed you saying it, but where can we download the mod?
Wish they made these games for PC still. I used to love the Papyrus racing games. Unfortunately they aren't compatible with Windows 10.
this is on PC
USAC had, until 1971, a rule that said all aerodynamic devices had to be integral parts of the body of the car. That changed in 1972 with the addition of bolt on wings along with the addition of ground effects. That's why the jump in speed at Indy and Michigan that year was so pronounced. It also was the main reason for why the month of May at Indianapolis in 1973 was so terrible. The technology had outstripped the cars and safety...Art Pollard was killed in practice that year. There was the huge wreck on the front straight with Salt Walther that year. And, Swede Savage's wreck in Turn 4...'71 pole speed for Pete Reason was 178.696 MPH...'72 pole speed for Bobby Unser was 195.940...'73 pole speed was 198.413 for Johnny Rutherford and his 3rd lap was at 199.071...
Due to all the passes on the front stretch, I think you took the preferred line into turn 1 on maybe one or two laps
Anyone have a link for this version of Trenton? Haven't had any luck contacting ISO.
Trenton was actually a one mile paved oval from the late 50s to the mid 60s. I don’t think it was a dirt track till earlier.
Cool. I might sign up with them. Oh wait.... :D
Have you thought about doing a F1 challenge VB all seasons mod career and story?
registered on their site but have no clue how to download the mods I click the link and nothing happens. I think I messed up i clicked it and idk what I did lol
Great stuff - Thank you! Went to the ISO website and found a link to download the mod - unfortunately the link doesn't work, whichever browser I use...
It's a limitation of most browsers not using ftp support by default anymore.
If you look in the USAC and then Feedback thread of the forum, we have posted a way to get browsers to open ftp downloads correctly for now.
@@Navitori Thank you - I did manage to download this morning!
So I got the cars but no the Track? Where is the track?
Richie Axelson in USAC?
1:12 Moe-Sport not Moss-Port. It's supposed to be a short hand of Motor Sport
Hey Jake which HUD are you using?
Where can I get this track?
Does anyone know why the offys became uncompetitive at USAC?
Fuel limits and the introduction of the Cosworth DFX. The Offy needed more fuel to make as much power that the Cosworth did and when you have a set limit of fuel at the beginning of the race, the more efficient and powerful engine will win out.
Where I can find the tracks and the mod? I seach in the forum but I can’t find it.
All downloads at ISO we keep in the rules threads for our series.
I always disagreed when some people had always said Indycar technology is 3-5 years behind Formula 1. I think that always have been bullshit. Tech depended of the seasons, in some F1 were ahead and some others Indycar were ahead
ISO?
International Simracing Organization. They build these mods and run leagues using them.
Awesome video, bit of a driving tip, ease out of the gas don't just let off fully. Dumping the throttle will upset the car. Also, you shouldn't hear the wastegate open. In short, don't agitate the Rattlesnake behind you! ;)
Just a tip: why don't you make an intro related to the video in question instead of only showing the same Ferrari 312 passing by at Spa? I mean, maybe an intro similar to it, but with the car and maybe the circuit in question, doing the same thing, storming by at high speed. Just to be less monotonous.
Anyway, I love it, don't feel like I said you that I don't like it, it's just a tip that I think a great Sim-racer like you, dear Jake, should consider.
Eh, that’s his channel intro. He’d have to record it and edit each week which just seems unnecessary. Also, who doesn’t want to hear a Ferrari V12 screaming up Eau Rouge
