    I find the Matterhorn a very epic looking mountain. I watched a film fourty years ago and it marked me a lot. I will never be a climber but I really enjoy the videos and films. Thanks for sharing. I suffer from heights so it’s on the ground i stay.

    Hi Mark,
    Great video!
    I'm planning to climb the Matterhorn in September with a guide.
    I have experience climbing but I find it difficult to determine what kind of physical condition you need to have. I live in Switzerland so I do regular hikes in the weekend. But do you maybe have a reference in terms of running (distance/time) or something else in order to assess the physical condition for this climb?
    What was your previous experience before climbing the MH? :)
    Thank you!

    • @markboelskifte
      @markboelskifte  Год назад +3

      Hi! I’m excited on your behalf - it is a mountain like no other! 😎
      In terms of my previous experience, I don’t have a whole lot since I’m only 19.. but I have climbed Toubkal and Ouanoukrim in Africa, as well as hiking across Iceland from north to south.
      Anyways, for Matterhorn, you should just be in good shape - nothing crazy, as the climb from basecamp to summit and down only takes around 8-12 hours. You should of course do the regular running about 2 times a week. But I found that going up and down stairs for around 2-4 hours per session is the best training! So I would recommend a combination of those two 😄. If you’re already in good shape, you have nothing to worry about 😆

      @@markboelskifte Thank you very much for the info, appreciate it! Maybe one last thing that crosses my mind sometimes: there are some bolts, pins and the guide puts the rope behind the rocks .. but are there many parts where you just move together? With other words 'if the guide falls, you also fall'? I know you shouldn't think about this, just trust the guide and enjoy the climb :)

    • @markboelskifte
      @markboelskifte  Год назад +1

      @@daska1477 In my experience, there was bolts and pins at around 20% of the climb - mostly towards to peak. So yes, there are a lot of places where you are just walking with your guide without being “secured”. However, being tied to your guide helped my group and I many times, and was certainly proved to be very effective!

      hi, there is a so called „matterhorn trail“ in zermatt where you can measure your physical condition. its near hotel cervo. i did it and it was really helpful. the best would be if you go down the trail to train that steep way down.

    • @markboelskifte
      @markboelskifte  10 месяцев назад

      We only spend one night at the Hörnli hut.
      But before that, we also climbed the Breithorn Traverse which is close to Matterhorn - this was not only to warm up the climbing skills, but also as an acclimatizing trip :)

    How hard is that climb? Grade 4?

    • @markboelskifte
      @markboelskifte  11 месяцев назад

      Well, it is a lot of scrambling - making it grade 3 overall i believe.. but there are some quite vertical walls to climb which i would argue is around grade 4.
      I would say it is more scary than difficult 😆

    I know it's cold but seeing climbers wearing gloves on such steep terrain seems sketchy.

    • @markboelskifte
      @markboelskifte  5 месяцев назад

      I see your point. No gloves would certianly be the most optimal. However, your fingers would go a little numb due to the cold - making it way harder to climb.
      We also only used thin gloves, and it worked out pretty great.
