Daubenhorn: The Longest Via Ferrata in Switzerland

  • The Daubenhorn via ferrata is the longest via ferrata in Switzerland. Graded K5 (very difficult), the route takes climbers along steep vertical cliff faces, across stunning waterfalls, and even climbs through a steep cave! With sweeping views of the Valais mountains and the town of Leukerbad below, the Gemmi Daubenhorn klettersteig is one of the most famous hikes in Switzerland for a reason. This was without a doubt one of our favorite Switzerland hiking adventures of the summer :)

    You know when Adam has to say "this is messed up!", there is some *serious* crazy action going on! Once again, you have produced a masterpiece of both filming the action and documenting perfectly. This channel is like a Hidden Gem of the RUclips world, you really deserve 10x the number of subscribers for what you are doing (and especially compared with people unboxing junk or playing computer games...)

      Thanks so much, that is really great to hear! Ya we never understand why YT doesn't show us to more people, but ultimately it doesn't really matter. Aw thank you -- ya where are those TV execs when we need them?!? That's a good question about anxiety attacks. It's very rare, but there was a point when we were doing that Oberrothorn traverse where the rock got loose and we were both just like, Turning Around Now! Also back when we did Galena Peak to Little San G traverse it was the same. Loose rock, where holds might break off in your hand, is the primary thing that scares both of us, and when we see it now combined with steep exposure we get the heck out of there! ❤️

      Hey you guys! So I am really researching this hard and plan on doing this next summer. I just want to make sure one detail. I came across information that said the starting point/trail head is 75 minutes from the town of Leukerbad and it’s marked by a white board. Is this correct?

    • @tonyc2570
      @tonyc2570 8 месяцев назад

      Also do you have a recommendation for where to buy a climbing harness with the braking system rope? I’ve done a lot of hiking in the USA 14,000 footers and such but I’ve never had to use one of his harnesses with the ropes.

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  8 месяцев назад

      @@tonyc2570 Yes 75 min sounds about right for the climb, and you also have the option of taking a gondola and then traversing about 15 minutes across to the starting point. Don't remember the white board, but there's a trail going right to the start from the Gemmi gondola station, and the hike up takes you there as well, so either way just follow that trail from the station and you can't miss it. You will see the iron when you get to it!

    First time viewer of your channel, wow the views! I love also how you show us the climb, how intense it appears to be yet confident of your skill and safety to continue without freaking out and the majestic views throughout. The most stressful to me was the parts where you were not hooked up, next to ledges and that rope bridge, holy!!! These are the most inspiring videos out there, something very few eyes get to see, thanks for letting us see thru your experiences!
    Switzerland is on my todo for skiing vacation but these climbs / hikes are something else. I have always been too scared for "regular" climbing, not trusting that I would survive just by holding to rocks. Via Ferratas seems a lot more accessible as big cables + steel footings feel much safer and the path is done for you. I do hike up mountains (probably using the roads you guys use to go back down haha). What are good ways to begin / test yourself? (sorry, I am 100% not informed. Just saw your vid, remembered that I would love to do this one day and bam, I am writing this haha).

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  9 месяцев назад +1

      David, we're so happy you found us! Based on what you said, it seems like via ferratas would be perfect for you. So there are two ways to begin. The first is to just start with some easy (but still beautiful) via ferratas such as Piccolo Cir in the Dolomites -- we have a video on that one you can check out. There are a lot of other easy ones around there too. Another easy Dolomites one we have a video on is the one at Tre Cime. You could do a whole trip where you just do easier ones and enjoy how freaking fantastic it is, and then just start trying harder ones when you feel ready. But if you live somewhere with no via ferratas -- like the US -- and want to prepare even before going to Europe, then you can just join a climbing gym for a couple of months and do some easy beginner top-roping. It's great fun, and will get you used to using a harness so you'll be super comfortable when you do the via ferratas. Excited to hear you're into this, and please let us know how it goes! ❤️

    That was nuts! Those verticals really came out through the camera!

      That's great to hear, Catherine -- they were so intense in person, and we were definitely afraid they wouldn't come out right on camera because it's hard to capture that much depth. The cave was also amazing in person, but hard to capture on camera because it was so dark in there. Really glad you enjoyed this one! ❤️

      @@LiveHardxLoveHard I thought the cave worked well, too - it was dark, but it was part of the atmosphere to convey that wet, slippery and somewhat uneasy feeling. 👍

    I love you guys, you make these climbs look easy.... and I know they are not... Elise has great strength and courage to tackle such huge climbs...and never complains ..wow !. Is there an easier way down ??

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  9 месяцев назад +6

      Thanks Martin! Yes there is an easier way down on most of these via ferratas where you can just hike down around the back side, but on this one we messed up and took a super sketchy goat path down the gulley! The bad news was we slipped on our butts a couple times, the good news was we got to see a lot of really cute mountain goats! ❤️

    Hey there guys, I've been watching all your European adventures and you guys are crazy lol. Not the amount of climbing but those via ferratas are too bloody scary for me haha Haven't been able to comment much because I've been busy hiking and guiding groups myself. Keep in touch!

    Umm loose cables?😮Omg...how do you know they're safe? Also, do you not share your treks down because they are so much more challenging?
    I literally sweat watching your videos but always look forward to them!:) I have come to adore you two and I truly enjoy seeing the world through your climbs (and your wonderful relationship!:) I get to see this beautiful world in ways I will never be able to without you guys! Cheers and prayers for your continued safety ❤🤗

      Lorina thank you so much for saying that, it made both of us feel so special and happy! As for the cables, we didn't really understand why these ones were so loose. They were in great shape, so it wasn't wear and tear. Maybe there's something about the conditions on that mountain that requires looser cables than usual or something. But it definitely made the climb even more of a challenge! ❤️

    You know what would be cool? If you did a segment about the crazy people who go up and set the routes! How do they decide where to put the steps and cables? How do they actually set them? What makes you trust your life to them? At this point I suspect you both have mountain goat in your ancestry. While I still get vertigo each and every time I watch you hang off a cliff on what looks to be a piece of rebar, now I'm actually fascinated by the process of building a via ferrata :)

      That is a fantastic idea -- we've been researching various aspects of the via ferratas, but would be amazing to meet with an expert about all the ins and outs and get it on film. Next time we're over there we will try and do it!! ❤️

    Professional Quality alone, in documenting this without a film crew, off the scale !
    Dodgy cables, slippery underfoot, cold hands !
