Second comment I know, but now that I've gotten around to watching the whole video I have some corrections to make for the audience (as someone on the dev team myself, albeit an SFM artist specifically) that I hope you wouldn't mind. At least where it matters most, so apologies for the wall of text. And feel free to inform me on anything I miss myself 6:06 There's also "Mercenary Domination" as the other mainstay as later mentioned at 11:30, which is pretty much what you would expect. It basically functions similarly, if not identical to, domination in tf2c where the more points you hold the faster you reach the score limit. Mdom is one of my favorites personally speaking. TDM would also be more fun if servers had a more appropriate player cap for the maps available imo, which are usually made for 12-16 players on FFA for reference. There's also "mpush" in which someone has to capture the neutral flag at the opposing team's base rather than retreating to your own. It's pretty much like the original gamemode in tfc. There's Infection which isn't considered a gamemode iirc but is still expansive, in which the zombie team (blu) has to infect all of the survivors (red) or they lose, much like in the Halo games. It's also possible to play stock gamemodes like CP or PL but those are unofficially supported and not advised. So really, there's still a surprisingly amount of variety for an "Open Alpha" even if FFA is by far the most played (since its easy to get games going there.) 7:12 Arsenal is what is called a "mutator" in AFPS rather than a separate "gamemode" in the same vein as CTF or Domination. These can be thought of as mini "rulesets" that change up gameplay beyond what is expected for the stock gamemode. Arsenal is one example but other examples include Instagib, Gun Game, Unholy trinity (Rockets, Rail, and LG w/ infinite ammo.) This means that you can have a round of Arsenal playing CTF or Instagib on MDOM 7:52 Not really a correction, but part of the reason why CTF is actually tolerable is also because of "return on touch." This means that if a flag is dropped, someone can instantly return said flag to their base simply by standing on it. This is also common in other afps games ive played such as Quake Champions, since its a much better fit for this sort of pacing rather than waiting for minutes like in tf2. 9:32 I want to confirm that yes, this wiki is unofficial and probably hasn't been updated for years. For example, Mercenary is from New York City canonically, not Nevada (and I'm pretty sure the wiki creator -who I won't name- claimed that this was their head canon that they decided to stick with) 9:48 While there are MGE rulesets available for "Duel" as an option, it's more than that. Namely because item control is even more important in duel than it is in the more mainstream modes. So to make it quick, the emphasis on strategy is more important than one would realize rather than purely homing in on your raw DM skill. Like in MGE, some people choose to play with a frag limit, but the preferred method is to play to a time limit. This is partly because (at least speaking from experience) snowballing is duel is frequent, so you never know when someone takes back control of power positions and items. Typically 10 minutes is the standard in all of the quake-likes i've played (QC, QL, Reflex Arena, Doombringer, CPMA) 11:58 This Hightower variant is a community made port, though with all the maps OF is getting from both the official team and community I can see the mix-up. 15:18 Personally I think this would be overkill alongside other suggestions imo. I think kritz are fine as is, or at the very least theres no plan on changing any of the powerups substantially after reflecting was added to the berserk powerup. Powerups are meant to be super powerful as you've mentioned, as you're supposed to time their spawns, or at the very least fight over them, basically a reward for picking your fights well leading up to that point. I noticed that too many new players just ignore kritz for example 20:00 I too take issue with how easy the gatling gun can be. Though that mainly lies within the fact that most servers (at least the most popular ones I play here in the US) have "weapon stay" enabled, which means that weapons don't have to respawn after being picked up. That, and weapon spawns give you only around 50% of a weapon's max ammo pool by default (with some exceptions such as the LG.) The gatling gun was designed with an ammo economy in mind, as instead of focusing on just individual kills, you're supposed to treat it as a "room clearer" while collecting more ammo boxes that way (In OF, players drop small ammo boxes instead of medium ones like in TF2.) So some servers just bypass the ammo penalty entirely. Weirdly enough it was probably one of the harder weapons to design both from a visual and gameplay perspective, as one could easily make the minigun equivalent feel too underwhelming for what it is. 25:14 The rocket launcher actually has a smaller blast radius and a smaller ammo reserve (16 instead of 20) but I can see how easy this would be to miss 26:34 Before the Chainsaw was able to trimp like you would in TF2, but the "airstep" mechanic (allowing you to climb up small ledges passively, making movement feel even better) inadvertently broke it. Though this is being worked on All in all, I still am a big fan of the effort that did go into this video, and of course the attention is appreciated as always
If you ever add Assault gamemode from Unreal Tournament 2004(the gamemode where theres mini story about a map where attacking team does objectives to finish the map while defend team tries to stop em) then I think i'd be worth checking out and more people will check out open fortress, but for now Classic is just more accessible and feels more like tf2... Theres a reason devs nerfed bhopping in tf2 and never added deathmatch gamemodes, because they dont represent tf2 vibe 8:04 Although it IS nice you guys never added bloody sentries, those things shouldve never appeared in tf2... I mean maybe if u copy the gamemodes and unlocks from tf2 into open Fortress, maybe it would be worth playing JUST for no sentries vibe. 22:04 NOT nice you brought back sniper rifles xd

damn pre-fortress 2 changed a lot since i last played (ok but fr, despite deathmatch games not being my vibe at all, i can admit that open fortress is such a high quality game, and i hope it continues to improve and succeed.)
as someone who plays this regularly for my TF2 fix nowadays, it's a perfect game for longtime veterans of the series and even newer players to expand further upon their mechanical skill and discover a whole new way of playing FPS. Being a long-time 2007 veteran and having TF2 be my main shooter for years, playing Open Fortress exclusively for a solid year has made me find myself continuing to find out new ways to approach gunfights, switch between offensive and defensive play with more strategy, control map areas and resources, mastering your weaponry, being able to discover all kinds of weapon combos to utilize and all sorts of other tech you'd find exactly from other arena shooters out there. yet, modern FPS players refuse to even touch arena and deny themselves further skill expression by playing only what they know they're good at. It's a crying shame not many play the game either due to them feeling intimidated from the heightened skill ceiling (that or running into the more skillful regulars and getting pubstomped for a couple of matches), or that most new players don't stick around long enough due to being bored with deathmatch being the main mode everyone gravitates to. however, all of the Open Fortress long-time regulars, like myself, have the exact same positive and welcoming energy as TF2C's group of regulars that frequent it, always happy to introduce people to the game and give them help/tips where it's needed and generally be fun people to play a few games with. It's worth sticking around for the long haul, because the community is what truly makes this game shine the brightest in my eyes, let alone being an extremely high-quality mod worthy of standing on its own.
There’s an additional game mode that you didn’t mention called infection. You never see people running it all that often because it’s at the bottom of the legacy server creator’s options.
1 regret i have about this video after releasing it is that there is so many mutators i didn't get a chance a play cause the only server that was EU and had people on it didn't run mutators... However, since the video so many people have started playing on new servers that have mutators! There's so many fun ones i've played now that I never got to talk about...
I really liked CTF in this game, especially that map where you basically launch yourself to dunk in the enemy team's goal, and then of course it explodes.
So 2 things. 1. Based on how you describe it, Open Fortress is a TF2-styled hardcore arena shooter that's actually enjoyable AND good-looking, to boot. and 2. The double-barreled shotgun needs to work like the SPAS in Half-Life in order to make it perfect. Fire = fire 1 barrel (half current damage, twice the chances to hit), Alt-Fire = fire both barrels (current design)
they should make a battlefront type game mode where its a big map and lots of objectives to do and after enough points you can become a buffed up TF2 merc until you die like in battlefront
Hell, as someone who loves arena shooters I appriciate Open Fortress as it is now. Yeah, arena deathmatch is not a thing everyone will like, but you don't need to appeal to everyone- find a damn niche sometimes, can't please everyone and when you try you fall apart
This mod was the tf2 mod i was the most good at, it's was right in my comfort zone since before i ever got to experience tf2, i played games like tfc and deathmatch classic cause of my at the time, somewhat weak PC. It's was so refreshing! Enjoyed bhoping all over the map, hearing the half life 1/tfc announcer voice again! Using the double barrel and ahh man, the gore, it's beautiful! Truly one of the greatest mods of all time!
It's been too long since I've played this game, going to head back to it. I remember Open Fortress being a lot of fun with a really solid core gameplay. :)
if they ever add it to steam i feel like it would 100% boost the games player base, steam do allow mods of their games to be added to the steam storefront. Since Open Fortress is so vastly different from TF2 it counts and is allowed to be added to the steam page
@@ccthe17th59 eh its good, but theres a newer sourcemod called tdc thats gonna be out in late 2024 early 2025 if i had to guess, its not released yet so ig go to open fortress for now
@@ccthe17th59 hey now worry not, as of right now play tests are being done for the next update, maps will be reworked/art passed, weapons will be rebalanced, and they're implementing a new jetpack power up, as of now they've been focusing on polishing and adding new maps for gamemodes
It does not. Windows will tell you that it MAY contain malware, probably because it doesn't have a license from Microsoft (yes, that is a thing). Windows is just paranoid as hell.
It's been a while since i've played OF... but MY GOD do i miss it sometimes. the raw action, the powerups, the fucking community (i've had a blast talking with them while chopping them up with my chainsaw) the only thing missing is.. players. at least when i played the game regularly
Idk if the minigun is that op. Health pickups are pretty uncommon and you kinda just die when there's multiple people. I do agree that you win any 1v1 with the minigun but with its limited ammo and the small amount of health pick ups make it a fair play weapon.
Are they planning on adding this to steam ( obviously for free) like other source mods ? This would be cool to play especially when / if they get single player AI.
The problems with that nobody plays it for me are: 1. Way too high skill ceiling for people new to the formula of arena shooter. Casual players are very much NOT welcome here. Literally the reason why I don't play this type of games with random people (after wasting 20 years playing arena shooters. I regret I even discovered them) 2. Veterans of the genre will probably play other arena shooters because technically all of them are the same. What's the point of playing arena shooter A if you can play arena shooter B. The only difference is the art style and that's it. All of them are just reskined Quake. Nothing unique
1. i had never played an arena shooter in my life before open fortress and honestly, the average skill level wasn't that high at all. If you're good at TF2, you'll be good at this too! 2. if u saw in the video i played other quake like shooters to see how they compare and i can tell you it as a fact this game doesn't feel like any of them. It's super unique, fun and beginner friendly imo. Give it a try and you'll see what i mean 👍
bwaa i wish open fortress was more popular but even if it was i probably wont even be able to play becasue i live in australia and i would get like a billion ping
Arguing that power-ups need downsides is... sad. The whole point is that you should fight over them, keep an eye on when they're spawning, they're what an arena shooter revolves around. You don't get them, you lose, so make getting them your first priority. That's the point.
not downsides inherently just ways of countering them if you play well, crits lasts for a VERY LONG TIME so you can basically just farm kills and there's essentially nothing you can do against it. Berserk lasts long, however you need to get close to kill so it makes sense
First time looking at your channel (a lot of love in it as I see) so I can't wait to see you in BOTH games (I came fro the other vid - tf2 classic, love ya so much rn
Tbh Im fine with the power ups especially kritz it's supposed to reward all players cause if you kill someone when they have kritz you're easily rewarded with kritz I definitely don't think you need mark for death when you have other weapons like the special weapons and other power ups to counter this like shield or overheal. Shields damage reduction is no joke when you get headshotted by a good rail gun player so I think these power ups are good because not only it makes you overpowered but can make an inexperienced player win more fights.

6:06 There's also "Mercenary Domination" as the other mainstay as later mentioned at 11:30, which is pretty much what you would expect. 4:14 one of the most based transitions I've seen
All the big tf2 youtubers need to see this
I’ve watched this video like 4 times now & it still hasn’t gotten old, really well made.
never been so early to a partypug video, HYPE!!!
THANK YOU INFO HAZARD !!!
I like how you can move the viewmodel to the middle, I wish more games had that option
Watching this on my iPaid! Good work!
The original Team Fortress was a team mod of an arena shooter. Now we have an arena mod of a team shooter, and we've come full circle.
One thing about the custom color palette is that people can choose really dark colors and blend in with night time maps so you cant see them very well
this is what the tennis ball color palette option is for, it makes every merc bright white and green so they're all visible
14:14
*drops cigarette and burns the whole place down*
You make fun energetic slightly edge content, keep up the good work
I really liked CTF in this game, especially that map where you basically launch yourself to dunk in the enemy team's goal, and then of course it explodes.
I tried to play this, but I was struggling to figure out how to install it.. Nvm i figured it out in 5 minutes
Fire = fire 1 barrel (half current damage, twice the chances to hit), Alt-Fire = fire both barrels (current design)
i’m pretty sure the reason you hate the flame thrower is because it’s the pre-jungle inferno one
pre-fortress 2 : )
The Overtime almost unrelated diss at the middle lmao
Time to go install this again
pico barstard captleisum is gods gratest creaton
they should make a battlefront type game mode where its a big map and lots of objectives to do and after enough points you can become a buffed up TF2 merc until you die like in battlefront
24:33 is by far my favorite part of the video you ranting about how shit pipe jumping is had me laughing so hard
Quake Live is a tweaked version of Quake 3 from 1999.
6:16 but I'm only good at kissing boys 😭
Same

I feel like the characters in this could fit in as the other mercs the tfc mercs mentioned in the naked and the dead
ok fuck it, that char customization made my mind, i will play it
Open fortress has so much spunk and style, i wish valve would actually promote the title
i know its great but i can't update it, I CANT
I love this game, Im so sad that its borderline dead
You know what this game needs?
Mechs
I'm surprised the all class mode wasn't mentioned it goofy but fun
retromode sounds like alot of fun, it would be so cool to see a tf2 vs tfc server
17:53 oh the World War II German pistol is a mix between a pistol and the World War II German pistol, who could’ve guessed?
It's been too long since I've played this game, going to head back to it. I remember Open Fortress being a lot of fun with a really solid core gameplay. :)
i do wish this was more popular i tried playing again after like a year of not playing it and it had 1 active server 💀
if they ever add it to steam i feel like it would 100% boost the games player base, steam do allow mods of their games to be added to the steam storefront.
Since Open Fortress is so vastly different from TF2 it counts and is allowed to be added to the steam page
i played this game earlier its legit something we need to push for more players.
my open fortress just crashes when the start up finishes
The best TF2 video that not enough people watch
For a second I thought: “oh well since this video came out, there’s probably been an update!” Then I looked at when the video came out.
lol there hasn't been an update forever
@@SocknessMonster damn maybe I shouldn’t get into it
@@ccthe17th59 eh its good, but theres a newer sourcemod called tdc thats gonna be out in late 2024 early 2025 if i had to guess, its not released yet so ig go to open fortress for now
@@ccthe17th59 hey now worry not, as of right now play tests are being done for the next update, maps will be reworked/art passed, weapons will be rebalanced, and they're implementing a new jetpack power up, as of now they've been focusing on polishing and adding new maps for gamemodes
@@ignitedradium1624 oh cool
no wonder why this took so long, masterpiece
while i love open fortress me being in Australia means theres barely anyone playing
I was going to try out Open Fortress, but upon downloading it I received a notification that said "This file contains malware" :/
It does not. Windows will tell you that it MAY contain malware, probably because it doesn't have a license from Microsoft (yes, that is a thing). Windows is just paranoid as hell.
Having problems downloading it
This game has significantly less chances at getting a DMCA takedown from Valve if they port it to s&box
GahDAYUMN this was a good video. Came from the TF Classic vid and this got recommended at the end. Definitely worth the watch. Subbed 👍
You guys doing some great PR with the cross referencing videos
It's been a while since i've played OF... but MY GOD do i miss it sometimes.
the raw action, the powerups, the fucking community (i've had a blast talking with them while chopping them up with my chainsaw)
the only thing missing is.. players. at least when i played the game regularly
oh cool! the yearly open fortress necro!
He didn't talk about all class dm.
10:26 great music choice
back then there was a huge hype abt this game, i played a lot, and the main reason was the bhop. it was amazing.
22:47 the Flamethrower is hand made by pyro, the model doesn’t make sense
5:38 why is no one talking about this joke fucking zinger 😆
Idk if the minigun is that op. Health pickups are pretty uncommon and you kinda just die when there's multiple people. I do agree that you win any 1v1 with the minigun but with its limited ammo and the small amount of health pick ups make it a fair play weapon.
Are they planning on adding this to steam ( obviously for free) like other source mods ?
This would be cool to play especially when / if they get single player AI.
So you say ANY weapon… right? He can wield ANY weapon? Will the invis watch make an appearance? Or should I say a… disappearance?
The problems with that nobody plays it for me are:
1. Way too high skill ceiling for people new to the formula of arena shooter. Casual players are very much NOT welcome here. Literally the reason why I don't play this type of games with random people (after wasting 20 years playing arena shooters. I regret I even discovered them)
I hope this video gets more people to join me in my favorite FPS, I have been here so long harvest froze over
"You Hold Left You Go D"
bwaa i wish open fortress was more popular but even if it was i probably wont even be able to play becasue i live in australia and i would get like a billion ping
maybe use a vpn
Arguing that power-ups need downsides is... sad. The whole point is that you should fight over them, keep an eye on when they're spawning, they're what an arena shooter revolves around. You don't get them, you lose, so make getting them your first priority. That's the point.
not downsides inherently just ways of countering them if you play well, crits lasts for a VERY LONG TIME so you can basically just farm kills and there's essentially nothing you can do against it. Berserk lasts long, however you need to get close to kill so it makes sense
This is so open
First time looking at your channel (a lot of love in it as I see) so I can't wait to see you in BOTH games (I came fro the other vid - tf2 classic, love ya so much rn
The free hats made me get this game.
Im checking this out when i wake up
Finally have someone to play open fortress with 😃
perfect presentation
5:00 Do you guys know what is the name of the music here?
this game looks sick. also cool indii shoutout
Dude!.. Team Fortress was created as a Quake Mod, and now, they've gone and made Quake in a TF2 Mod! XD
