      Positive Crankcase Ventilation. Every engine has leakage past the piston rings known as blow-by. In the past these were allowed out of the engine through a draft tube. However as more vehicles were being built and people started to be aware of the fumes and vapors coming off them the PCV system was developed. It uses the valve and a fresh air tube to draw fresh air into the engine through the air cleaner then that air mixes with the blow by inside the engine and is drawn out through the PCV valve into the tube that leads into the intake manifold. The fumes and oil vapor are then burnt inside the engine. Normally this isn't a big issue UNLESS you have a GDI engine. On those this vapor still goes the same route but now there is no gas being sprayed onto the back of the valves to keep them clean and they build up deposits that cause other problems.
      Failure of the system can lead to leaks if it builds pressure in the engine. I have seen main seals blown out because of a failed PCV, it can also lead to oil burning for a similar reason, except now it is engine vacuum that sucks the oil up and burns it.

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  4 года назад +4

      Oil usage is one main item......it can cause oil to get into the intake and soak items like the air filter in oil and go back into the engine and get burnt and out the tail pipe.

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  4 года назад +1

      Cylinder pressures get past the rings on the piston and enter the crankcase......the PCV valve helps to remove that pressure and also separate the oil from it so that it stays in the engine and not enter the intake

    Was on a trip to family's house 500 miles away few days ago and they have heated garage with all the air tools and everything I needed to do some routine maintenance. Once I was done changing oil, rotating tires ect. I had just passed 100k miles on the 5.7 on this 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee and thought, when I get home I need to check Pcv and maybe install a catch can. When I went to start it back up, push button start, it just kept cranking and cranking like the battery was dead, I could not shut it off. When I pushed the button to try and make it stop it kept cranking! This went on for about 45 seconds. Then it stopped. I waited a few min, pushed the button and it fired right up! I wondered even more If the Starter was shot or the Pcv Valve was clogged? Well when I got home there was oil dripping from the bottom of the rear of the engine, like the main seal was gone? What the heck? Can't see where the oil is coming from. The crossmember between the engine and transmission is covered in oil. It only seems to leak when running. David or anyone have any idea what this could be? Clogged Pcv that caused to much pressure inside engine?

    I’m having an issue where it doesnt really like driving on cold start. I mean it drives fine and shifts great, but I’ve had it stall on me a few times when coming to a stop. Maybe 3-4 times. Not a whole lot. Hasn’t done it in a while and only usually when cold so I make sure it’s fully heated up before driving. But also everytime I come to a stop light or any stop, the RPMs drop to 500 even. And I can give it a little gas and it’ll junk back to 700 and idle great. Not sure what the deal is? I replaced the MAP sensor and nothing. Replaced spark plugs and nothing. I sprayed a bottle of sea foam threw the throttle body. And nothing. I mean it helped a little for a day or two. It would jump back to the idle rpm it should be at but now it isn’t correcting itself.
    What could be the problem?
    Sorry for the long message.

    YOur videos are great man...Do you have any vids on your channel explaining the EVAP code. I keep having to reset it once a week..More of a pain then anything. I don’t think it’s the gas cap. Off the top of my head i believe the code is something like P0004 (small evap leak). The gas cap light has NEVER come on. I have done some research on it and i believe it’s something under the engine cover that may need to be replaced or snugged up. Thanks brother....Happy holidays...

    Thanks! However, how do you remove the old PCV valve and install the new one once it’s remove from its housing? I understand how to get access to it and how to put it back together but, you didn’t show taking the old one off and putting the new one on.

    • @MotorCityMechanic

      Sorry if I am confused, In the video I do remove and replace it. Now what might help clear things up is....the item I am removing and installing is the PCV valve. There is nothing to separate and reinstall on the item that was removed, it is the PCV valve. Its one piece. So what you see me grasp with the pliers and twist is it.

      @@MotorCityMechanic I figured it out. I didn’t realize the replacement part was exactly the same part was what was removed. Very informative video! Thank you.

    Opinion on using a catch can? If you have too much blow by, like a 6000 hour motor. Will a new PCV valve not help at all?

  • @wovasteengova
    @wovasteengova 3 года назад +2

    Aye I got a question. I got a Durango 2006. Everytime I fill it up, the dodge will stall after I stop. But this is only for like 2 miles. Then it runs fine. Someone said that it's a valve of the tank let's too much vapor in crank case. Any suggestions on what I should do?

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  3 года назад +2

      Sounds like a valve on the fuel tank is sticking and when you fill up with fuel its allowing "liguid" gas into the vapor canister and once the purge solenoid is commanded on....instead of vapor going to the intake.....liquid fuel is and that causes the engine to stumble and stall until the fuel level drops. Thats what I usually find and when you take the canister off.....its heavier then normal. Thats when the tank and canister have to be replaced. You can verify this by unplugging the electrical connector at the purge solenoid and then fill the tank up and see if any further issues.
