Today I replaced the coolant pipe and thermostat housing with the aluminum one, put in a PCV valve, and new spark plugs all by following your videos Thanks a million!!!
One of the few times a Dorman product is actually going to be useful, reliable, and improve longevity. What a great idea from them - hope they will sell serviceable gaskets. Now they need to make a aluminum thermostat housing! Great video!
Man, between this and the thermostat video, you helped save me so much money and headache. Also, I've been working on my own junk for 35 years and I'm always learning something new from guys like you. That WD40 trick is genius. I always use a hose pick but never once thought to squirts some lube in there. Awesome videos!
This is the man I need to fix this motor right. If I’m ever in your area, we are going to become friends! Fixing it right and taking your time to show us what is best. Kudos for proper instructions!
well, THANKS for saving me a headache. Came to see torque specs after installing the crossover, did not know about the little rubber gaskets. Went back and they were all in the old plastic part.
Man I am so glad I came across your channel. I’m in the process of chasing down a bunch of coolant and oil leaks on my wife’s mini van and you’ve given me a lot of good info.
David, thanks for all your help with this video! Last week my 2014 Challenger displayed an engine light with a P0128 problem code. I had watched this video last year and remembered it. I ordered the aluminum crossover pipe and the now available aluminum thermostat housing. Will be replacing both parts next week. All the torque tips and the rubber bushing information was extremely helpful. Keep up the good work!
I replaced these parts. Not a bad job. Cheap insurance against future breakage. Thanks for the great content.👍🇺🇸 Need a video on pentastar belt tensioner and idler pulleys replacement!
Me and my son did this upgrade along with the aluminum thermostat housing. It was a straight forward procedure. As Dave said, Take notice to your long and short bolt locations. Thanks Again Dave.
More vids on feeding and care of the 3.6 please. I'm really impressed with the little pentastar in my Ram. It hauls my freight and gets awesome mileage on those long road trips. I think Chrysler hit a home run with this motor. Keep up the good work David!

Hey David, thanks for the video highlighting this upgrade replacement item. I had to replace the one on my 2013 T&C today after the original plastic one started leaking in the driveway yesterday when I got home. As always I went to RUclips and researched what would be involved in swapping it out. I didn't realize there was an aluminum upgrade till I watched your video. Your video was perfectly put together and very professional compared to others on there. The Motor City is very lucky to have a professional technician with your knowledge and abilities local for them. Thanks again from a new subscriber and take care!
My 2019 300 has the 3.6 so I will keep an eye on this. Dorman doesn't have the best of names for quality but in this case they my have made an actual upgrade over OEM parts. Thanks Dave!
When you're working on a machined aluminum surface, it's better to use a blue (3M 7515) or gray disc (3M 7516). The red disc is much more abrasive, taking material off much faster. That Dorman part is very nice! Thank you for letting us know about it.
Usually I use an older plastic white version.....that thing never wears out and I have had it for years. Otherwise it was what I had on the die grinder to be honest lol. Thanks for commenting and make sure to subscribe if you havent already.
MotorCity Mechanic I just bought the Dorman part, because of this video. I screwed up though. I forgot about your Amazon link. Shit, I feel so bad. I owe you one!
It works like a charm. Got me thinking I need to do a quick tip video....another youtuber I know does something similar...just cant remember his name lol.
Thanks for the informative content. I'm getting ready to replace leaking thermostat housing on 2015 200c with Pentastar and figured while I was in there, I might as well upgrade the coolant pipe to a more durable and hopefully reliable metal component. It's a little more involved doing this with engine in the vehicle but watching this video and also watching motor mount replacement gives me all the info I need to complete this repair / upgrade. Oh and I ordered the updated coolant tube from Rock Auto and got it for $31.79 plus shipping and tax. I had other stuff in with order so I'm figuring about $36 shipped.
I was just about to replaced the Thermostat Housing with the Upgraded Aluminum one and saw your Excellent Video, So I replaced the Cross over with the Aluminum one too, I previously replaced the Oil Filter Housing with the Aluminum one, all the Plastic parts seem to be Failing at 9 years on my 2015 Grand Cherokee
Love your channel. I am pretty much a hobbiest backyard mechanic. Been working on cars since I was a pre teen. I watched your whole video series like several times on the pt cruiser timing belt video. Learned quite alot from that and was able to repair my mom's car. Thanks again for what you do here. Hope you have great success with your channel and I will keep watching.
Just a tip from my recent experience after installing this part, make 100% sure it is perfectly centered where it mounts to because it will leak like hell.
My 2014 Town & Country just started a small drip at the upper hose and thermostat housing only while running not parked. This looks like a great upgrade if the thermostat housing is aluminum also or available aluminum. My 2006 Cayenne had stupid plastic coolant pipes in it I upgraded to aluminum when I bought it. WTG auto engineers for using plastic in a very hot location! Thanks for the video my van has 159K miles now I hope this one pushes 320K as well as my 1994 did with the 3.3 motor.
Great professional advise. I followed your channel since I had a problem with a ticking noise in my engine and I was able to know what a mechanic was supposed to check.
I enjoyed watching this video. You have a good set of work ethics and as much as I don't trust the typical auto mechanic, I would trust you with my vehicles.
Amazing. So glad I found this bc I had just replaced the Water pump and Thermostat assembly and found out this part existed. The damn thing was difficult to find online. Thanks for the tutorial.
Dorman also makes an aluminum replacement for the plastic heater hose feed/return lines. The clamps have sleeves holding the clamps open for you for easier installation.
Great info sir. Got the 3.6 in my ram truck and so far I'm extremely pleased with the power and mileage. Please make more videos on the ram trucks and this engine.
I like to think of it like my favorite restaurant.....there are things on the menu that I love to eat and others I dont lol. I have a rule much like Harbor Frieght.....doest have any moving parts, no electronics, just a piece of metal......if so then it should do well.
Had a plastic thermostat housing on a Buick Encore turbo 4 cylinder. It cracked and also swelled enough to let the thermostat flip over inside it. Drove us nuts as it would be okay for a while, then all of a sudden the engine would overheat and shut down (luckily before it caused any engine damage). Where the housing was it was buried and the crack was not evident . Also the coolant would steam off so you couldn’t tell exactly where the leak was. My mechanic finally found it and replaced it with a new (plastic) one which solved the problem. Another case where an aluminum thermostat housing or any other part of the cooling system should be mandatory. I hope Dorman comes up with the thermostat housing for the 3.2 V6 as I have one of those now in my Jeep Cherokee.
Sent you a couple bucks (paypal) will definitely send more as you save me money ( and may make me money in the future on helping repair others' vehicles ) , as i bought a 2015 Ram Promaster 1500 3.5l to build for traveling and I have stuck too much money into the build ( solar, water system etc ) to sell it and I have a lot of issues already and can see there is the potential for a lot more. Appreciate you very much ! Thanks D Y PS Have radiator out and thought I may as well check spark plugs. OMG !! Surprised it ran 134 k and obviously never changed. You caught me with the PCV ( on previous video )before I put intake etc back on ! Lucky me. PVC looks challenging as I have heater pipes in the area but the tool bit wrench should help. You saved me here to with that advice. Thanks !
Anytime I encounter a part that may have different size bolts I trace a pattern of the part on cardboard with the bolt holes punched in the cardboard. As I remove the bolts I place them in the holes in the same location on the pattern. Works on water pumps too.
gracias por todos tus videos soy principiante en la mecanica pero me gusta mucho y gracias a tus videos estoy reparando mi Dodge Durango Crew 2wd voy despacio pero feliz a cada paso que doy muchas gracias en verdad!
First let me say that your descriptions, dis-assembly/reassembly logic is very good for the DIY mechanic. That said, I know this is going to sound nit-picky, but those are not 10mm bolts holding the thermostat housing and crossover pipe. Those bolts have 10 mm hex heads, but the bolt is an M6, probably 1.0 pitch. Just like SAE bolts and fasteners, the size of the bolt is not the hex size. For example: a 1/4-20 inch bolt typically has a 7/16 inch hex; with metric fasteners, an M6 x 1.0 millimeter bolt typically has a 10mm hex. I understand you are explaining to the listener so they know what size of socket wrench to use. Maybe you could say "These are bolts with 10mm hex heads, which will be the wrench size."
In the process of waiting for my water pump. Gonna replace that, the crossover pipe (thanks you mentioning it existed) and the thermostat. Dorman still doesn't have an aluminum model, oddly enough, so it's another plastic part to go.
Thanks for the video David. On the cars where the engine mount is in the way, do we just need to support the engine from the bottom (floor jack and a block of wood) and then just remove the engine mount? I hate plastic in motors too...GM almost ruined the reputation of the 3800 for putting plastic all over the series 2 and 3..UIM, Coolant Elbows, etc...hey Dorman helped with those problems too. There are some Dorman products that don't make the mark ( and they catch a bunch of heat over it) but sometimes their stuff is just what the doctor ordered...
Man wish I knew this two months ago watched your channel and replaced thermostat which had small leak so I did it and water pump 😱hope it doesn’t leak it’s my travel vehicle.. did AC condenser today trying to keep it in prime condition it 2013 grand Cherokee 👊🏻
For keeping the bolts on the original plastic part in the correct place. Take a shoe box or something similar draw with a fat tip marker an outline of the part. Then take a razor and cut an X where every bolt hole is and place the bolts in the holes as you remove them. It takes a couple few minutes to make a templet frome card board but it sure as hell beats the having to guess at it. And also by using this method you keep the same bolt with the same bole and threads that it has been in all of their lives. Hahaa. Idk good luck to y'all. 👌👍✌️
Perfect timing! I just got the P0128 code the other day. Looking at swamping out the thermostat in the near future. Might as well upgrade that crossover pipe while I'm in there. Too bad that aluminum thermostat housing isn't available now. Thanks for the info. 👍🏼🇨🇦
I love your videos. They are easy to follow and they save me time and money for those of us that are weekend warriors, garage monkeys. QQ: Do you recommend anything to put on the gaskets for this?
I just looked closely at my 2016 Jeep Wrangler JKU 3.6, and it has the aluminum crossover on it from the factory and the thermostat housing does not have that raised circle cast into it. The factory must have had a part number change that happened after they made this change.
My 2012 JK Wrangler appears to have a metal coolant crossover from the factory. The OEM part isn't available on its own but appears to ship as part of the Chain Case Cover, part 68079231AE. Not sure what determines which Pentastars are graced with the metal part from the factory, or why they thought that they could get away with plastic on some and not others.
great vid they need to make the oil cooler t stat and crossover pipe out of metal had to replace all three on wrangler with 50 k on it and you have to tear half the motor apart to get to them engineers not thinking good thanks for the great vids
As always, thanks for the video!👍🏻 When you turned the old coolant pipe over it looked like it was made of aluminum, no?? Plastic on the outside?? 🤔🤷🏻♂️ Thanks,
Great video. Thanks. I’m pretty sure my 15’ 200 is leaking from there. It looks like very tight working space though. You should do a video on the ZF 9 speed. Maybe discuss common issues like the hard 4th to 5th shifts and whatnot. I have 141k on my 200 and I’ve been getting the transmission speed sensor code intermittently. I’m looking into the repair on that at the moment.
Sure, after I already replaced the plastic one, with a plastic one... I'll wait for the aluminum T-Stat unit and replace both, if the engine makes it that far, it's at 104K at the moment. Ate #1 coil last week.
David it seems like they would provide the sleeve with the long bolts for the pump. If rubber they may be cracked even thin steel could be messed up by corrosion. By rights for the price of that crossover part they should have sent it with new bolts and sleeves or steel spacer's it looks like you had in your hand. The one thing I hate you start a project then need something stupid as these spacers. I think I even put a thin layer of silicon between the crossover and the block just in case. Nothing worse is doing it twice.
@@WBOS72 made by Dorman but I have one myself I’m having installed and honestly it’s a really nice piece. Would upgrade and on Amazon for $150 it’s worth it.

Good stuff mang, gonna do some maintenance on my JKU and will include this.
hey buddy that's a good looking shop u got there hope business is going good
Its doing great and I appreciate it!
@@MotorCityMechanic I know u will do good
I just looked closely at my 2016 Jeep Wrangler JKU 3.6, and it has the aluminum crossover on it from the factory and the thermostat housing does not have that raised circle cast into it. The factory must have had a part number change that happened after they made this change.
You always make great videos! 👍🏾
Mine wasnt leaking. I thought it would be fun. Done 14 since. I belong to the largest MOPAR club in USA
Thanks for watching Paul. Glad that the video helped and make sure to subscribe.
It certainly would have been nice if they are metal to begin with. Its the weak spots of the engine other then the rocker arms.
As always, thanks for the video!👍🏻
When you turned the old coolant pipe over it looked like it was made of aluminum, no?? Plastic on the outside?? 🤔🤷🏻♂️
Thanks,
Great video.
Thanks. There is always room for more videos so you never know.....maybe one day.
Sure, after I already replaced the plastic one, with a plastic one... I'll wait for the aluminum T-Stat unit and replace both, if the engine makes it that far, it's at 104K at the moment. Ate #1 coil last week.
It always happens that way....not needed until after you have done the repair. Hoping the T-stat is on the horizon
Thanks for this vid. This helped a lot. Orielly's has this part for a good price.
Great video David! Now if Dorman could do the same to the oil cooler.
Thanks.......who knows, maybe they will one day
Haha foreshadowing, if you haven’t seen it already they released an all aluminum version of the 2014 and up oil cooler housing🤙
@@cbrown17982010 mopar?
@@WBOS72 made by Dorman but I have one myself I’m having installed and honestly it’s a really nice piece. Would upgrade and on Amazon for $150 it’s worth it.
@@cbrown17982010 great to hear this. If i ever own another pentastar, will upgrade
