I got one of the original 2016 bmw 340i with the b58. I absolutely love that engine has gone from Texas to Canada and back several times and has never given me an issue. I recall when I purchase the car new everyone thought i was crazy trying out a first year new bmw engine espeically after all the issues from the N54 but the design seem solid enough and it hasnt disappointed since. I plan to own this car till I or it dies.

From the several BMWs I've had, M10, M20, M42, M52, S52, and now an N52n, reliability of the engine has never been an issue. Problem now is the crap components BMW puts around the engine. Both e82 and e90 I've driven were good, but became ultimate CEL generation machines the second they hit 100K miles. By comparison my 01 528 wasn't maintenance free certainly, but never failed smog and was calmly cruising through 292K miles when it went to a new home.

Porsche, Alfa Romeo and BMW had all gone to mechanical port injection on their top performance cars by early 70s. These are some of my favorites and while not fast now, they were much faster and more economical without other emission controls than their carbureted contemporary models. All exotics save the earlier MB 300SL were still running carburetors.

I have a issue with my car and didn’t know where to go from answers but I’m hoping you’d know what to do. I’ve been a huge fan of you for very very long now and if there’s anyone that can help I know it’ll be you.
I’ve recently retrofitted xenon headlights to my e90. It’s a pre lci e90 and I’ve fitted lci xenon’s.
They’ve been coded and rewired and I’ve upgraded the frm. Everything seems to work however the driver side (right side I’m from UK) halos do not work (side marker/halo/DRL). The bulbs and headlights are completely fine as I’ve tried both headlights on the passenger side and all seem to work. The wiring looks good too, the frm is good too, I’m getting a “short circuit” and a “right side marker” error and the wires that go to the halo pins are getting no power. Not sure what to do. I’ve tried removing the error, double checking wiring, and all the normal procedures. Nothing seems to clear the fault.
What can I do to fix this? Any advice would be extremely appreciated!!!!

Reliable bmw is a joke, has always been and will be as it is NOT profitable to build a reliable car, period.
It's even more profitable to build a crap that can fail before 100k and under the warranty to be replaced 1 out 50 engines, like n20, m65, n65, n52, than building a car that can last over 300k.

    • @spencermaiers8322

I do believe bmw engineers in leaks and service beyond the normal failure rate of all normal components.
However, 1980s bmws and into the 1990s were very reliable in many ways.
      The e28 535i is a reliable car.
Bmw is a very skilled company as are all manufacturers basically. They make fantastic engines. They also have had decades of ultra high performance, luxury sport, and are a go to for racing and budget performance as they age.
Bmw also probably has the biggest enthusiastic group of owners who help each other out from what I have seen, but I'm biased. Just don't see that much content for audi, Mercedes, etc.
Driving a bmw feels a lot like driving a porsche in many key ways to me. Power delivery, braking, some handing feel.
Bmws are very cool cars who need a honest mechanic or several with skill, an owner who diy jobs or has enough to pay the mechanic, and or a friend or two who can help out. Bmws can really be great cars.
The m30 engine is a fabulous long lasting engine. Their 90s v8s are very good. There's a lot to like about bmw. They are somewhat presented obnoxiously in the dealership but life isn't perfect neither is BMW. But they have a lot of cool stuff going on. Hopefully they don't go woke and broke!

And I'm not even mentioning other areas like electronics, suspension, transmission, central diff on x3, x5, door handlers, body design - all these can not be justified by "environmental enforcement"
Since 2000's they only depend on their past reputation and during last 20 years they totally consumed that reputation.
Now only stupid or "enthusiastic" buy that brand.
If you buy one then forget your life, family, and devote yourself to that piece of metal, wasting time on mechanics, dealerships, "enthusiast" forums.
