    Greg Macke - Your Car Angel reviews a first generation Hyundai Genesis that ran between 2009-2014. It is another 100k long term review on a car that is considered one of the Best Used Cars to Buy especially in the luxury used cars. The Hyundai Genesis can be found on Greg's Halo list at www.carbuyingsupport.com.
    Greg talks about the cost of ownership espaecially when compared to mainly the BMW 5 series (525,530 and 535) and the Mercedes Benz E class (E350 and E550). German cars have a higher cost of ownership than the Korean built Genesis. Also covered is the Z6 transmission made by the Getriebe Company in Germany and is the exact transmission found in the BMW 5 series lineup.

    I'd like to see more 50,000 mile comparison reviews. There are way too many new car reviews, and single reviews of 100,00 mile cars. You cant tell much about which is the best car to buy when the comparison is only about new cars. It doesn't really matter if one car is slightly better than the other when they are brand new. I want to know how they performed after a few years. That's where I get my moneys worth or get ripped off.

    I own a 2011 4.6 that I bought new. I have put 260K miles on it, mostly highway miles. I got over 200K miles on the factory front brakes, and over 250K on the rears. The only failures were the radar cruise control box and the alternator, which blew its regulator at about 250K. Super reliable car. One detail that this reviewer got wrong: The gearbox in this model is a 6HP26 made in Germany by ZF, which was correctly stated as shared with BMW, but also Aston Martin, Jaguar, and others. It was widely considered the finest 6-speed auto built by an independent. ZF sold them to Hyundai because they had just been replaced in most of those other cars with the 8HP 8-speed, which fit in the same space.

I was skeptical but seeing your post confirms what ive been hearing from other Genesis owner's. They're pretty satisfied with just minor issues. Other than that the cars change gears smoothly with no loss in power or mpg. I think they're beautiful cars inside and out.

Synthetic oil changes and tire rotations every 7500 miles and 91000 miles later it still runs and looks new. So you get a really top of the line car that has over half it potential still unused for how much??? Really,??? I would have jumped on it for sure, even if I had to borrow some money from my brother-in-law (yeah, that one) You have a great deal. Fine out if possible how often the previous owner changed fuels or if you're really interested, there are companies you can find on line that for a couple of crisp twenties (guessing) they will do an oil analysis for you. . That will tell you how much copper,and other engine materials have warn down. Personally, I'd just keep it topped every 7,500 with high quality hi-mileage oil.
      I hope that helps. Best of luck and yes, I'm seriously jealous of your luck.

    I purchased a 2012 Genesis 5.0 V 8 without the R - Spec package I was glad to find that configuration because personally I felt like there wasn't enough Spec in the R - Spec. To me the R - Spec delivered a ride that was simply more harsh on the road than one that was tighter and more performance oriented. I thoroughly enjoyed the car I purchased. It delivered great performance whether I was running on regular unleaded gasoline or 91 octane. I purchased mine with about 40000 miles on it. I was actually looking at the new ones when I saw mine. I saw an opportunity to save money in my purchase and took advantage of it. My car had a full factory warranty. This made my purchase decision an even better and easier one.
    The car got lots of compliments, if you are into that. I graciously thanked everyone who ever complimented it. That was very nice of them. It once gathered a crowd of Korean's who were at a convention of some sort as I was leaving a hotel, and getting into it. One of my very good longtime friends, who is Korean told me that in Korea only rich people drive that kind of car, and in particular the Equus. (He was once surprised in our many conversations, to find out that I knew about the Equus and Hyundai's history long before it came to America.) However that was not what was most important to me. I bought it because I liked it and I thought it was an excellent value that I would have for years to come. The 5.0 motor garnered lots of attention from people who know and love cars. I was really quite surprised To even get some invitations from people driving Mustangs V- 6 and 5.0, Subaru WRX and STI, and BMW'S M3 & M5. I also got invites from a few Chrysler and Dodge Hemi's, and one Jeep SRT
    (Nice looking vehicle by the way) This usually occurred when I was on the highway and they rolled up on me from behind and saw the 5.0 logo on the trunk. I was surprised, Quite surprised and flattered they knew what it was. 429 Horsepower at the time. (More about that later) I usually politely declined the invitations because I didn't actually buy it to race. I bought it to enjoy and I wanted the performance, but I bought it to enjoy. You see I do a lot of highway driving And there's nothing more enjoyable than having a very nice car to drive on the highway when you do a lot of driving. I loved the features inside and out. And the handling was very good too. One thing that really surprised me was the fact that the body style of the 2012 did not trap dirt. It flowed very aerodynamically over the car. The only place dirt would kind of come to rest was on the rear bumper. I thought that was the coolest thing. Little did I realize it would also yield a been beneficial clue to a very real impending problem. I never drove my car in spite of driving lots of highway miles out of a 350 mile radius more or less. For longer distances I would just fly. One day I get an invitation to attend a Fitness Expo at the Orange County convention center. I started to fly however I thought what an opportunity to take my Genesis on a first sort of long drive. It was just about exactly 500 miles. I have to say the car performed beyond my expectations it did not disappoint. I've owned luxury cars, even driven across country several times. Good Genesis 5.0 was fun and relaxing. And what topped it off was the fact that when i arrived at my destination I had less than an 8th on a tank of gas left. WOW!!😄😁😎 Granted, mind you that my previous car a luxury car had a little smaller gas tank but I was running premium on this and my previous car I ran regular and I always had to fill up by the time I got to Valencia cause I was not going over the grapevine without running out of gas. So that was a big plus. From the bay area past LA, to the OC. GREAT!! The fitness event was everything I expected it to be. When it came time to return, I had to fill my tank and of course you'd check everything before getting on the road, that's the way I learned to drive. Tires, all the fluids, everything.
    NOW,
    The not so great. I found that I was 2 quarts low on oil. My car Had burned 2 qts of oil in a 500 mile trip. Not good, not usual. OK not to panic, not to worry. I topped it off. And I made a stop or 2 on the way back not stopping not topping it off again until I had reached my destination. To my disappointment I discovered that I had burned 2 qts of oil on the return leg also. I decided to drive it a bit and monitor it closely to see what was going on. It was now burning oil all the time. It was even coming out of the exhaust and a film would rest on the rear bumper. (Remember I said more about that later.) I decided to call the factory While it was still under full warranty, and not my dime. I've spoken long enough for now. Duty calls. I will add to this post later about what happened next. For now I will say I was sorry to see her go. But, we don't buy them for the problems.

I cannot think of one thing to complain about. People stop me all the time and tell me what a beautiful car it is, but WHAT KIND? LOL. Not that many were sold in the U.S. They both have the same 16 speaker fabulous surround sound system. Never had a luxury car with anything that came close to it in sound quality. I was invited to a factory presentation of the Genesis when it came out, probably late 2008. They had several BMW, Mercedes, and Lexus models to compare it to. I got to drive all of them and I remember telling the salesman that while the Genesis appeared to be comparable to the other cars and the price made it appear to be a good value, I predicted that it would depreciate much faster than the competition mainly because it was a Hyundai therefore it was not a good value at all. On the other hand, because of this accelerated depreciation, I predicted that the Genesis would be a great used car value one day. I believe my prediction has come true.

    • @mcearl8073
      @mcearl8073 7 лет назад +1

      Frank Howard I dunno, I think they have held their value about the same or better than the German cars. That's being said you're probably right on it being a decent used car purchase, it still depreciated a lot and was cheaper to begin with, they are nice looking and reliable. I still prefer the German cars though, they carry more prestige with them which is why companies always try to compare them to the Germans. Take that for what it is I guess. Maybe not as much to enthusiasts but your average joe sees a guy in a Benz and he automatically thinks it's an expensive car when truth is the guy probably picked it up second or third hand for less than a cheap econobox. Sure the maintenance is a bit more but if you play it right it's not more expensive to own than anything else.

    • @frankhoward7645
      @frankhoward7645 7 лет назад +7

      Billy. Thanks for your comment. I agree with everything you said except the last sentence you see, I make my living selling used auto parts on eBay and I specialize in the makes where the manufacturer is ripping off his customers namely Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Mercedes, Saab, and Volvo. If they weren't charging so much for parts, I couldn't sell my used parts for much. That's why I don't carry Hyundai parts. Those parts are just too reasonable so it would be more difficult to make money selling used Hyundai parts, or Honda, Toyota, Mazda, Subaru, Ford, GM, or Chrysler parts.

    • @mcearl8073
      @mcearl8073 7 лет назад +1

      My last sentence still stands true for the most part though maybe I didn't explain it right. Let's say the average joe goes and buys a new or almost new car and doesn't do his own maintenance, he's going to spend 15k or more on average for a couple year old Hyundai or whatever where I can buy a Mercedes or a BMW after depreciation has already taken its toll for the same or even half that depending on if I'm willing to go older or with more miles and if I avoid the dealer and do my own maintenance and use aftermarket parts(bought on eBay or Amazon etc) my cost of ownership is really not any more or often less than Average Joe driving a random econobox. The problem and crazy costs really only come when you start going to the dealer and always using factory parts. That's certainly not all that's involved in playing it right as I said but that's the main key, it isn't for everyone but it works for a lot of people.

    • @frankhoward7645
      @frankhoward7645 7 лет назад

      Billy. You said that, "...if you play it right it's not more expensive to own than anything else." but when you laid out your example, you didn't compare apples to apples. You said when the average Joe buys a new or almost new car, "...he's going to spend 15k or more on average for a couple year old Hyundai or whatever where I can buy a Mercedes or a BMW after depreciation has already taken its toll for the same or even half that..." I disagree. A couple year old Mercedes or BMW will cost more than the Hyundai. A much older Mercedes or BMW will cost the same and only a significantly older Mercedes or BMW will cost less so to pay the same, you'll be looking at a Mercedes or BMW that is older than the Hyundai. That's not comparing apples to apples. Now I understand that you clarified your example by saying that you could accept an older car, but again, I don't believe you compared apples to apples. You compared a Hyundai owner who always takes his car to the dealer to yourself, a guy who does his own work. Why don't you compare a Hyundai owner who does his own repairs to yourself? If you did, you'd find that the Hyundai owner is paying significantly less for new parts and that's where my business comes in. I offer the typical Mercedes or BMW owner an alternative to high priced new parts as I sell used ones so while you're replacing parts with used ones from eBay, the Hyundai owner is replacing parts with new ones from eBay. I think when you said, "...if you play it right..." you were saying if you do your own work and when you said it was no more expensive, you didn't place a value on your own labor.

    • @mcearl8073
      @mcearl8073 7 лет назад +1

      I know I'm not comparing apples to apples, a Mercedes and a Hyundai are not apples to apples comparison IMO. I definitely would never say you can buy a new Mercedes or a new Hyundai and the cost of ownership will be about the same, that's just never going to happen, not anytime soon anyway. Yes you'll have to buy an older Mercedes, but it doesn't need to be considerably older, depending on the model anyway. My point wasn't that a new Benz will cost the same as a new Hyundai, my point was IF you play it right one can own a Mercedes for less than or the same as a new(ish) Hyundai, I probably shouldn't have said "anything else" as that's far too vague and one could always buy an older Hyundai and do their own maintenance and that's not going to cost as much as a Mercedes or BMW. I guess to sum it all up is I'd rather be driving a 5-7 year old Mercedes than a new or almost new Hyundai and I can do so for about the same money but I understand that is not going to be the same for everyone and that's fine too.

  • @jamescortez504
    @jamescortez504 7 лет назад +7

    Greg, there are a lot of German Badge snobs who buy German (some buy Volvo) cars thinking they are better than local of Japanese, Korean cars. Your video above open their minds about non-German cars which equal if not exceed "perceived" German quality but can be purchased and maintained at lower prices.

    • @747-pilot
      @747-pilot 6 лет назад +3

      EXACTLY! German cars are some of the best when it comes to comfort, performance, luxury, refinement, technology etc., but they have the *WORST* build quality, reliability and durability, and are INTENTIONALLY designed to fail and "turn to dust" after the warranty expires, so that they can sell you another new car.
      So when you do the math that $120,000 Mercedes S Class actually costs *3 or 4 TIMES* what an $85,000 Lexus LS 460, that will give you 250,000+ miles of "bulletproof" reliable service, costs!!! This is evident in the resale values as well. Over the years, as people have finally "wisened up" to this, 10-year old German cars like the S-class become worth virtually "NOTHING", while a Lexus of similar vintage, holds its value like gold (relatively speaking).
      That is why, Mercedes does not even offer a good extended warranty on their new products, and even the extremely shitty extended warranty they do offer (which excludes "this and that", and goes up to max of something like 75K miles (a complete joke), is super expensive. Goes to show that they don't have any confidence that their own product will last a decent amount of time!!

      @@obungapyramid5525 It's bulletproof. if you want power which I assume with a nice sporty style and luxury audio and comfort its a great buy. the electronics are hit or miss but most you can live without. NAVI backup camera and sunroof are common failures. I haven't gotten any and my car is at 91k. the alternator is known for issues but mine has been ok so far. the paint is ok but I would invest in a ceramic clearcoat asap as it's very thin and rock chips are very common. if the paint is clean the owner was a very caring owner. ask me any more questions. performance is ok because the factory slows the car down, eg shift patterns, torque management, throttle response timer. most of it but the manual option is where I would keep it in. and the economy is great I sometimes average 27 in colorado and seen it at 29 on a downhill highway. 10/10 would recommend, the aftermarket is small so insurance will love you.

They replaced it at 75,000 with a brand new engine from Ontario CA factory. Even though I had these issues and many warranty replacements in the 110,000 miles I drove it, I absolutely loved that car. It was hard to part with it but I did and leased another Genesis, 2016 Ibiza Blue 3.6L Ultimate. Who's we? Most Americans (Muricans?) have a hard time with saying it how it's actually supposed to be pronounced. Think of the word hue, but instead of a long u sound like in true, think of a shorter u sound like in sun. So go back to hue, but with a short u sound, and then add an n to that sound. Then add dai to it, but instead of it sounding like day, it actually sounds like the first part of the word dai-ry or dai-ly. Of course, the Koreans knew that Americans couldn't be bothered with actually pronouncing it correctly, assuming that they even could, so they just let it go. Kind of like some Spanish words/names are completely butchered in English, but since Latinos have experienced it for decades or longer, it's not just changing and they just accept it and even pronounce the words the same way themselves when speaking to white people, basically...

    I got rid of a 2012 Mustang GT that lived at the repair shop for a 2014 Hyundai Veloster Turbo. The Hyundai has not had a single issue in the 2 years I have had it and it is just a way better car outside of the power of the Ford. I don't regret that trade one bit.

      my cousin has a genesis coupe v6. what are you looking for? it has nice power, nice handling, he hasn't complained about it. the only thing is, he also uses it during winter, and even with winter tires he does get stuck still. If you're somewhere with mostly sun... i'd recommend it, as they are getting cheaper by the year!

      Carlos - I would highly recommend the Coupe. I purchased a new 2012 2.0 turbo and the car has 137K miles now and is still my daily driver. Only repair has been a left window regulator. My mileage was not as advertised in the beginning but now I get 27 mpg - i had to get to 80K miles to get it "broken in.'

      Me too! They're so stylish inside and out, have great ergonomics, are reliable, have great warranties, have a very high quality feel, and are cheaper than the competition. They're just incredible!

      Michael Morrow I take it that the 2.0 turbo is a 4cyl? And when you say 27mpg, is that city?

      Hyundai is VERY good at taking styling (and design/engineering) cues from other very nice car shapes and mfrs. The car in the video has a distinct blend of BMW and Lexus styling accents, and it pulls it off really well. The wheels, rear deck/lights, front grille and headlights are all nice adaptations of BMW and Lexus.
      And that driver seat looks like they got in the car, drove 100,00 miles straight, then got out. Beautiful.
      Stay gold.

      dnl machine engineering? Your an idiot. Other car companies take their engineering. They used to copy others like all asian manufacturers did and the Chinese still do. Since 2010 they have changed. The redesign o the G80 or the Genesis sedan in this case was built in 2008 as an 09 model. Look at all the Lexus and BMW styling in those cars in the mid 2000s to late 2000s they were all very similar to this car but they were all redesigned before the Genesis which came late and was updated in 2014.

    You forgot to mention that the 2012+ models engines were revised upping the power.
    333Hp and 291Tq.
    Also gaining a better bump up in MPGs with a new 8sp automatic transmission from the previous models 6sp.
    They also revised front headlights, adding a LED daytime running light.
    Love this ride.
    My only issues with this car, is the electronically control gas pedal.
    It doesn't provide a good feeling and has delay reaction times.
    Not such a big isses, but even though it has a 7way stereo system.
    The sound quality is not satisfactory enough. (Generic Speakers)
    It should be and could be better.
    Would I recommend this car... HELL YEAH. 👍🏼
    Nice car, good reliability smooth ride, plenty of power, and especially could get one for a nice low used car prIce.
    Compared to other used cars in this price range, Ya cant go wrong.
    Genesis > Civic, Accord, Focus, Cobalt, Camry, Dart, Altima, Maxima, Mailbu, Etc.....

    If the most significant issues with the car is plating coming off the door and wear on the gear knob then this is a car to buy . . .as the owner of a 6 year old BMW which I have had since new I dream about only having to deal with issues that trival

    I work on a LOT of Hyundai's and yes, the Genesis sedan is a good car. Solid, safe, and reliable. Not a lot of luxury car options on the early ones. Except for the push button start, anything on this particular car had could have been on any leather equipped car in 2009. Nav wasn't even standard:(

    Owned an '06 Tucson.
    Reliable and decently comfy.
    Seems like Hyundai was just beginning to turn a corner in that era into a more substantial product.
    Small reminders bumper to bumper on the Tucson, in and out that showed they still had a ways to go.
    That vehicle is still going strong with over 100k on the clock and only minor repairs.
    A friend of mine took it over when I bought a 2011 Ford Escape.
    Needed the bit of extra space.
    I personally think that Hyundai needs to ditch their little cartoon-looking badge, the weird 'H' that I read is supposed to symbolize two businessmen shaking hands.
    Or, maybe it was salesman and buyer.
    Whichever, that badge makes an otherwise quality car look cheap and disposable, which they were in the beginning.
    The winged Genesis emblem looks sharp and, along with the name, evokes quality and forward thinking somehow.
    I'd put my money on a Hyundai or Kia over anything GM or the Fiat/Chrysler group has now.
    "Fix It Again Tony" partnered with the perfect company in Chrysler.

    2013 3.8 sedan 173,824 on her so far only big maintenance has been battery and alternator I have owned the vehicle since 2015 and have put over 100,000 on her. Quicker than any v6 sedan in its market
