    Greg I couldn't agree with you more. I just bought a 2013 Lexus GX460 with 89K miles on it and it is impeccable. Everything works, inside and outside look great and I couldn't be happier. The ride is a little rougher than my 2003 BMW X5 3.0i but its a hoot to drive. As for the BMW, what a money pit. Roughly 173K miles on it and everything that could go wrong has i.e. transfer case, oil leaks, etc etc etc. Thank you for the excellent videos!

      travel78 I drove a 2017 RX as a loaner before I got the 2017 GX and I have to admit it was pretty smooth and peppy as well. The GX is a tad more sluggish at first but if you romp on the V8 you can get some great power out of it that overall I feel is more/better than the RX. As for the ride, I've always been a fan of heavier vehicles with higher riding heights and thicker tires for an overall smoother ride. I might be biased, but when I'm riding country roads the smoothness, sway, and acceleration of the GX in my opinion is perfect for me and I feel at the end of the day better than the RX. To be fair, the RX is a very mean value and it's neck and neck probably to most people.

    I just saw this video, and I own a 2005 GX470 with 170K miles on it (as of 2020). I've owned it since 2013 and have roamed backwood trails, driven up to high altitude ski resorts, and pushed the vast highways of Montana for close to 8 years now. The only maintenance I've had to deal with are oil changes, replacing the running lights, the alternator wearing out after 140k miles, and a few hail storms (which were quite unavoidable.) This review is spot on. Lot's of "big boy" features when it comes to towing, driving off road, and hosting passengers in a luxury setting. My buddies are still "wowed" by the GX when I take them on road trips or golf outings. The GPS is of vintage "2005" tech stock, but the console interface still plays well with the climate and audio controls. As a side note, the cassette deck slot can be converted to a nice mounting platform for modern day devices. Add to that the fact that it was ahead of it's time as far as furnishing additional outlets for multiple power connections (it even has an AV "fork" outlet in the back.)
    This vehicle has been a dream, and it still looks damn sexy! I owned a Lexus GS300 sedan before this and although I have been satisfied with both, the GX470 is king. A muscular 4.7 liter V8 on a mid-sized SUV chassis with: tow controls, 2nd gear start, air ride suspension preferences with rear axle height controls, toggle enabled traction assist., toggle controlled differential settings (4WD vs. AWD) with an additional stick that lets you dictate between 4 hi and 4 lo... there is even a switch that engages a downhill engine brake... all things you rarely see on any sort of mid-sized utility vehicle to this day without forking out 70-90k. It's like driving a modern semi truck packaged into a mid-sized SUV.
    This vehicle is still a rare bird and is worth a serious look... Top quality indeed! (Sound system is fabulous, in case you are worried about that!) :)

    We replaced our Jeep Grand Cherokee in 2009 with a Certified Pre-Owned 2007 GX470 that only had one owner and only 26K miles on it. It was pristine and we got a great deal on it. I had never owned a Lexus before, but I assure that after owning this SUV for the last decade, I will sing the praises of Lexus to anyone and everyone. Our GX has taken us everywhere in comfort and style. Snow, mud, sand, loose terrain, freeways, around town, you name it, it does it! Best things about it is how quiet it is on the freeway, the comfort of the seats, the power, and its reliability. In the 120K+ miles we've put on it, the only thing we've had to replace was the alternator. That's it. Nothing else but regular maintenance, tires and brakes. A great mod that I did was I installed a gas strut on the rear door, so it opens on its own and stays open when I need it to. It was simple to do, here's the video I referenced: ruclips.net/video/X-n0HpRIOTk/видео.html I have friends who ask why I don't trade it in for a new SUV. They say, "that thing's 12+ years old, get something more modern". No way. I'm convinced that anything else I buy will just let me down. Besides, my GX has been paid off for 6 years. If it aint broke, don't fix it. I'm a Lexus believer! P.S. It tows like a champ too!

Drove from one side of Michigan to the other to get it , and have not been disappointed yet. With in 3 weeks of purchase , had it up north camping , and on the trails. Did wonderfully , and still no squeaks or rattles to speak of. We were on the fence about such a higher mileage vehicle , but after seeing this my girlfriend was on board immediately! in response to "Joeys Cleaning Lady" and "Jonathan Nauck"
      This car does not have KDSS. It was an option in 2004, but they did not
      put a trailer hitch receiver in the bumper of the KDSS models. They
      did that configuration, because they were not sure how it would affect
      the integrity of the kit. I know, because I have had a 2004 w KDSS,
      since new. That option was on something like 1 out of 10 trucks, or
      less. The system works admirably. It corners more flatly on the
      roadways, and gives greater articulation of the opposing wheels in
      off-road driving. 145,000 miles and climbing.

    My experience with my 2004 GX470 matches this reviewers. I purchased mine new on October 1st 2004 and currently have 87,000 miles on mine. It still looks, runs and rides like new. All service has been performed by my local Lexus dealer. I have the oil and filter changed and the tires rotated every 5,000 miles. I have exclusively used Mobil 1 full synthetic oil since the first oil change. The engine has never used a drop of oil. I did have a leak in the water pump at 50,000 miles and had them replace the engine timing belt at the same time they replaced the water pump, since they are adjacent to each other. The batteries last almost exactly 5 years so I'm on my third. The air suspension has never needed work. I had some preventive maintenance done about a month ago replacing the transmission fluid as well as that in the brakes and front and rear differentials. I also had them replace the spark plugs. I have had the serpentine belt and radiator hoses replaced as well, just as a preventive maintenance item not because of any problem. I plan on keeping my GX for the long haul, it's been a fantastic vehicle to own.

      Hi, great to hear somebody else has an '04 with low mileage, I've got same, 04 GX, 66,000 miles, only new rear brakes so far, I used to use Lexus for maintenance, then switched to local independent shop.
      Today my tachometer went out, needle stuck at 0, please let me know if you have heard anything about this, from what I've learned so far, the gauge cluster board fails frequently with Lexus-- However not so much with the GX.
      Hoping for easy aka inexpensive fix, Lexus just wants to replace board for $1000+!! :(
      Thanks

    • @scotttrindl1192
      @scotttrindl1192 6 лет назад

      You've got even lower miles than I do. I never had any issues with the any of the gauges at all, so can't give you information on that particular problem. The service from my Lexus dealer has been the best I have ever experienced with any vehicle...by far. The vehicle that I had before the GX was a 2004 Cadillac CTS. I traded that in on my GX after 6 months of ownership with 4,700 miles on the odometer . That car had far more problems in those six months of ownership than my Lexus has had in 14 years. My Cadillac dealer wasn't particularly interested in fixing any of those problems either. Neither was Cadillac Corporate. On my last visit to the Cadillac dealer, their service manager told me "it would take us too much time to track down all of those problems, you just have to live with them". I told him, no I don't, and drove down the street to my Lexus dealer and traded it in on the GX. Best decision I ever made.
      I did replace the brake pads, front and rear...the front at about 60,000 miles and the rear about 85,000. I consider that just normal maintenance.

    The GX-470 is built on the Toyota Prado frame, same as the 4-Runner. I own a 2004 Toyota 4Runner, and it has 214000 miles on it. Like this 470, my 4Runner also is 100 percent reliable, blessed with the same V8 in the later model GX (much better fuel economy), and everything on my 4Runner works "as new". My wife and mother-in law both drive much newer cars - a 2015 Dodge Caravan and 2017 Ford Edge. The Edge has about 54000 miles on it and runs quite well, but the ride quality of my 4Runner is on a much higher level. Any trade away from my 4Runner or this 470 will necessarily be a trade down in quality. I drive mine hard. For several years we lived in the top of a large hill in south Texas. The road to our home was unpaved dirt and rock, and you had to drive down through a dry creek bed to start the ascent up, which was very steep, twisty and very rocky. Tires would spin making the turns on this road. Often, visitors surrendered in fear and would not even attempt the drive up. But my 4Runner handled it with ease, and for years, with never a single malfunction or even protest. These two vehicles are almost certainly the best made, most reliable vehicles made in the history of automobiles.

      We bought a 2006 GX470 in April last year with 150000 miles on it. Airbags and air shocks had been replaced a few times already. The suspension is not working properly all of the time. Thinking about doing a conversion back to basics. Love it though. Love the V8 power.

    Great video; it helps me decide if a GX470 is for me or not. One quick comment: High school students and driver ed students are taught to drive with 2 hands on the wheel and as they grow older adults should continue to drive safely. (I was a bit surprised to see you video tape yourself driving with your wrist.)

    Great review of one of the most underrated vehicles out there. But, the 2004 shown in this video is not a KDSS model. And the height adjustment is only a crawl speed thing, it will go back to "N" by itself my MPH goes up. This height feature comes in handy when hooking up a trailer, turn it to "H", lower the trailer lift to the ground, out GX on "L", then drive off. Can get back hitched using the rear camera, super ez.

    Nice to see the GX getting some love, but there are a few glaring errors in this review. First off, timing belt is due at 90K not 100K. 2. Not all GX's have the kinetic dynamic suspension system (kdss) it's only on sport models, which this one isn't. 3. Adjusting the "ride height" is only for up to 19mph, at which time it automatically adjusts to the "normal" position. These trucks don't get the attention they deserve, so thank you for a mostly accurate and appreciative review.

      Matthew M ... perhaps. Mine has 175k miles and never had timing belt replaced. As he said, it’s built like a tank. Last 5 years I put only gas and oil and it runs like new

      Matthew my GX has 175,000 and never changed the timing belt. I’ll probably change it at 200,000 miles.

    GX is Prado, LX is land cruiser. 4runner and sequoia are not for international market, so they cannot be compared directly

    • @SunnyV-0
      @SunnyV-0 7 лет назад +10

      The 4Runner is sold as the Hilux Surf in many other markets. The GX/Prado, 4Runner, Tacoma/Hilux, FJ all share the same chassis. The Sequoia is built on the Tundra Chassis which is only North American market.

      You are wrong about the 4runner...i owned one in Africa-kenya but it's called hilux surf..

    • @Gabriel-nd3fo
      @Gabriel-nd3fo 7 лет назад +3

      The Tacoma does not share the same frame. It is an open channel Dana Corp frame that has corrosion issues. The 4runner gx and fj are on the prado platform. Not sure on the international hilux but it is fully boxed not c channel like the taco.

    Bought a 2004 gx470 in 2015 with 150k mi after my wife totaled my beloved 1999 limited 4Runner.. bc it had 3rd row seats & better for all our kids. It’s had minimal issues except this weird transmission shake around 40mph but you can get rid of it by accelerating or letting off gas. Has 228k miles and still does the shake but otherwise no real issues except replacing rear air shocks. Probably needs front shocks checked out but she doesn’t complain.. Love the gx470! Has some quirks like idle reset and window resets needed after battery change. I’m hoping it lasts another 4 years or so for first car for our oldest. I still miss my 4Runner though..it was such an amazing vehicle.

    I bought a 2005 gx470 (at 92 K miles) on October 2018 after watching this ad. Brake booster Accumulator VSC module failed last Month. Parts : $ 3450, $ 4900 installed. Timing belt, water pump, drive belt, tensioners : $ 1900 .
    Maintaining this car is very expensive I'd hardly recommend this car to anyone. Maybe good for the first 90K, but expensive maintenance and repairs after that. Any GM car can accomplish that too for lower price...
    Oh Mark Levinson amp is dead too another $800
    Do not buy any expensive Toyota or Lexus.

    I have a 2005. It is undeniably the best car i have ever owned. Bought it new and it has 171,000 miles on it. I plan on driving it for another 100K. Recently I was told that my front axle boots are leaking grease. Looking to have that serviced soon. It is an amazing vehicle.

    Still in love with the look and reliability of my 08 GX470 after 9 years of owning it! I paid $52K for it in 2008. Only 63K miles. Gas was $5/gallon in 2008 but the price has been much lower in recent years which is a huge bonus us, GX470 owners.

      I just bought one too. Traded in my 2013 Honda CRZ 6SPD for it. I was told great stories about it too, but the 08 I bought later needed two front catalytic converters. $1000.00. Other than that I changed the timing belt. It has 193k on it. It's a 3rd car so I'll be garage most of the time.
