I love how you dedicate full videos to such topics to teach us to appreciate some otherwise unnoticed technical details and tricks that make such a big difference between average and awesome animations! Great job!
That feeling when you learn that your favorite animations (and much of what made them your favorites) are from a period that's over, using techniques that will never come back 🥺
Been wondering when you'd upload again. I didn't know that zoom shift during physical focus pulls was called focal breathing. Explains why old anime focus pulls feel more tactile than digital ones. With advancements in compositing making it easier to convincingly simulate the cel look, I would love this detail to be kept in mind.
Funny enough modern camera objectives manufacturers try to eliminate focus breathing for videography... That's also why many productions seems quite sterile in my opinion. Also camera flares due to reflection in lenses are almost eradicated, but many art directors use adapted vintage lenses to bring back those effects on purpose. I recommend watching some vids about it, very interesting indeed
Great video! Subbed! I am also very much into old anime and how it's done, i did a lot of research on why old anime looked and felt so good, and your video has everything i found till now. And on top of that, i got to know more new stuff thanks to you! 80s and 90s anime were just peak!! Everything was hand drawn using a real paper, pencil, paint, cels and film. It was all analog tech, it can never be beaten by any of today's digital anime and CGI tech (nothing against them btw, i like digital anime and CGI animation too), but i loveeee hand drawn animation! It's just too good! I really wish someone would do that in today's times.
Amazing video, would love to see a return of the realist movement in today's anime. I think nowadays shows are too much focused on sensationalism (shock factor) over realism, i don't mean that every show has to be painstakingly realistic but just a bit. I also believe that the criteria to determine a good and well written anime/manga has gone down tremendously but i have hope.
I often hear people criticize modern anime, but if anything, the writing improved tremendously. Things like stereotypical predictable character tropes get adjusted (Jujutsu Kaisen) and they delve deeper in motivations of characters (Kaguya-sama, Ranking of Kings). And there are realist anime out there. Chainsaw Man, pure aesthetically speaking, is very grounded. They emulate lighting that a real camera would capture. So sometimes, I just wish people appreciate newer things too without nostalgia goggles. It's fine to have preferences, so do I. I miss 90's anime, but I do not think the newer stuff are bad. I'd argue we're in another golden era too.

fascinating, honestly love the realist era in animation, adds such a flavour to those films.
The Bebop movie is so cool, I feel like a lot of people watch the show and never get around to the movie. It's worth watching
