I'm an American who lived in Bangladesh for 3 years and the imitation is endless there. I mean, it's so bad that people take a brand name like Subway and serve curry street food there - they don't even know what they're imitating. There was a KFC franchisee that did it right for a while and got KFC's blessing. KFC Corporate taught them everything, gave them official tools and equipment, food recipes, business processes, etc. But after they did this the owner got greedy and no longer wanted to pay royalty fees despite having a BOOMING business. So KFC cut off all contact and his business started to fail - he cut corners, reduced quality, and he tried to hide the fact that he was no longer official. It was so unbelievably scummy - it was so sad seeing Muslims act like that.

10+ years ago i had the idea of creating a 'chai' shop, with 'chai' in the brand name. If a non-business minded person like me can think of it, then many many other people can too. So good luck to them all. Many coffee shops out there doing well with competition, so I'm sure these will too.

Completely agree with the point. However, what do you say about all the established businesses out there which have been very successful. To name a few, banks, estate agents, insurance firms the list goes on. Ultimately there is little to no differentiation here nor creativity? The argument of not needing to re-invent the wheel exists here.

There's a very clear reason why there are many apparent "copycats" instead of new business ideas which is the huge financial risk of trying completely new ideas compared to opening a business based on a solid and proven model, pouring your hard-earned money into a completely new business concept is much easier said then done. And clearly there is demand otherwise these other businesses would not last beyond a few months.

I think as Muslims we need to spread our wings. Not only solving customer problems for individual profits, but also solving problems to benefit the global ummah as a whole, making the average Muslim more stronger by a few/many %'s. I mean look at how the Jewish Community operate; small in number but massive in influence. The time is more critical for solutions now, as the rest of the world is conspiring against us. Our systems, product and value needs to be solid.

Nice content that is quite practical to those who are interested in entering the entrepreneurial world. I believe its to lower the risks of doing business maybe? Given the well known high failure rate, its natural to be averse and to just imitate. But we should see failure as a badge of accomplishment and the more failure the closer intel to success.
Off-topic: Could you do a series on Tawakul? There is barely any content on it, to learn it or to just give a basic breakdown of it. I love the risk-taking emphasis on it which is intimately tied to entrepreneurship unlike conventional insurance.

For example how many uncles have takeaway shops and they all sell same things .. not even that they offer variety … there is lack of creativity and innovation when it comes entrepreneurship in the community.

If a leader in an industry cannot stand competition, then that’s where their innovative thinking stops. If you’re discouraging a concept from being duplicated, then what do you have to say about the plethora of mainstream coffee brands - Starbucks, Costa, Nero, etc? Fact is a concept is just a concept, differentiation & quality is what helps distinguish a brand. Just because the word chai is included in branding doesn’t mean it’s a copy. In a similar vein, the same applies to other industries, airlines, lawyers, accountants, bankers, consultants, grocery stores, fashion brands, Islamic finance gurus etc. Most people go into business to make money & not typically for philanthropic reasons - to invest in solving a problem the community may have. Yes, it would be good for more Muslims to become quality entrepreneurs and solve problems the community has but you cannot say that don’t copy what is working. Competition is intrinsic to ensure even the leader is on their toes to provide quality & not become complacent. If people do copy what is working, do it better than what is on market. It has been known to be done.

If these businesses are saturating the market, they'll be unprofitable, and have to close down. The fact they're still operating (and in many cases, expanding) - shows that there's unmet demand.
Not everyone can be a maverick entrepreneur. 80% of businesses fail within the first three years. There is no shame in copying a strategy/idea that's already working.
To be honest, for me, this video comes across badly. Some people have the privilege of starting businesses without having to worry about failure or supporting themselves. Other people are just trying to survive.

If you take cha sha for instance, they use a different colour scheme to the black and white of chaiwala and they serve in traditional clay-made cups, with very authentic south asian decor, offering a different experience to chaiwala. There are way bigger issues in the Ummah to focus on right now.

  • @theabsdude
    @theabsdude 8 месяцев назад +9

    I disagree with this video.
McDonald's started the fast-food game but then everyone else jumped in and they all had to up their game to stay cool. So Burger King, Wendy's, and the rest didn't just copy - they mixed it up, adding their own twists. Now we've got a $570 billion industry on our hands, and it's all 'cause that first idea got copied and sparked a whole innovation race. Copying doesn't kill creativity, it lights a fire under it - more choices for us, more cool stuff coming out, and more bucks in the economy.🍔💡🚀
Also, let's look at Starbucks and Costa Coffee. Despite sharing a similar market space, the presence of both hasn't diluted their revenue; instead, it's grown the coffee culture and expanded the market. When Starbucks introduced the concept of coffee as an experience, not just a drink, they didn't monopolize the concept-Costa Coffee tapped into that wave too, differentiating with their own style. So, the coffee shop market in the UK alone is worth over £10 billion, showing that competition can increase rather than reduce overall revenue. Both brands thrive, innovate, and contribute to a robust industry where the consumer's increasing demand for variety and quality ensures that there's plenty of business to go around. 🌟🚀

But the vid seemed to lean heavy on the negatives of business 'copycats'. Honestly, apart from a couple for example, most aren't even rocking the same name, just a similar vibe. So if it's not about the name, what's the stress? They're filling different niches and spicing up the market. If we're all about originality, shouldn't the focus be on the unique twists they bring to the table instead of the shade for playing the same game? 🤔✨🛍

copycats drive down margins and oversaturate the markets, consumers lose out as well. becase all the vendors are fighting over thinner and thinner margins so they have to cut costs, so the will try and get by with lower quality ingredients, cut staff hours etc. so you're left with a poor quality product.
the original company gets hammered by competition and they lose revenue, and the copycats just end up wasting their time and they soon chnage the shop entirely after a short time.
near were i live there is 1 ottoman doner place, seems OK. well just 2 doors down, after seeing the success of ottoman doner, someone opened ertugal doner. it was ridiculous. nobody ever went to ergutal because ottoman was there first and they already established themselves. in about 5-6 months ertugal doner shut down and it's a different takeaway now.

It's not just these lazy and unoriginal chaiiwala imitators. This problem PLAGUES the entire Muslim world. Someone will start a business and maybe do a little well. A lazt imitator will notice and think they can get in on the action, and will open the same shop right opposite or next to the original one and steal half their customers. Both end up worse off. If you're going to copy, at least go to an area where the customer base isn't the same. You can go down a typical Asian area in the UK and you'll see 5 barber shops within a 2 min walking distance. or 10 takeaways, or 5 groceries all branded the same. Annoys the hell out of me

Tbh i think you have a relevant problem that you are addressing in the video. However I think you have built your relevant point upon false examples. I live in Ilford and most of these Chai shops, although very similar , offer different experiences. I think you may have superimposed an idea on these chai shops. To say that because the other shop all have 'Chai' in their names makes them copycats is a big stretch. For example Pizza Hut , dominos pizza and Pizza Gogo. You could say these too are copycats of each other , but that just comes down to the fact that if a business is doing well others will follow suit and take key elements of the business, just because a business is the first of its kind it doesn't and shouldn't guarantee them as a monopoly of that concept. Through that logic , there should only be Pizza Hut etc.

Yeah don't fully agree with this video. Competition drives the very innovation mentioned in the video. Plus the industry mentioned tends to have a massive appetite for growth. How many Western coffee businesses are out there competing against each other? All with their slight unique twist/differences and they appear to be doing well at face value.
But i do agree on one element, perhaps not emphasised enough. The unashamed copying with no difference. The proverbal cash grab with little to no thought. That happens in our community alot, the silly cloning diluting a given area and then killing growth. That i think is a real problem. Half the time the copying is rubbish and so sub par it effectively slowly kills that market.

This is not new. If you go to Pakistan or many other countries in the East (including China), you will see many traditional areas with shops that sell identical things. From tyres to cloth, you will find shops like these together rather than different areas with different types of shops.
As a kid I wondered how they made money but thats because I had been raised in the West and didn't understand why things had turned out this way.
To be fair this occurred because Capitalism wasn't the endgame and people weren't out to one up each other as much. It was easier to set up shop in an area with similar shops.
However now with Capitalism in peoples minds, it has turned into copycatting from others and riding the wave of novelty without substance, like some weird form of trickle down economics. I believe this is the mentality we see with these copycats.
China styled this out by adding some honour to their old school business practices and not competing on price with each other because they knew it would give rise to disputes and greed. However things are different now and these thought processes are dying if not dead.
As Muslims our backbone for doing business should be not making the most money but how we can benefit the world. We should know Allah has written our Rizk for us and trust in that by striving for it but not at the expense of your fellow human.

@@mt000mpfully agree that authenticity is important but competition as an economic concept has its benefits - it prevents one player for taking over the entire market and therefore being able to offer really high prices even if the service is terrible, because they are the only ones who can. Because there is competition, companies will be competing to offer the best service/prices, which is helpful for the customer as the quality of the industry, and potentially affordability, should increase. It can also drive positive growth as companies usually need to offer new products or at least improve their service in new ways, to keep going. I do agree with you that backstabbing, scamming etc is wrong though. And trying to steal customers from a Muslim brother/sister by opening by minutes away is also questionable, but unless there is a hadith to prevent that, you could say it's a part of business.

Great video. Definitely don't go to KFC! Go to Chaiwala and avoid Starbucks so we don't support Xionism! 🇵🇸🇵🇸✊🏾

I don’t shop at Indian businesses especially ones that are Gujarati. I see them as traitors to Muslims during partition. They sided with Hindus over their own Muslim brothers.

It's very sad. I always say this to Muslim entrepreneurs who want to get into the fitness space, I'm happy to help you. There is enough to go around. Allah's rizq isn't limited but don't plagiarise all my stuff and try to sell it as your own. Innovate bring something new to the table. And don't be an amateur selling fads and gimmicks

There's no point talking about coca cola and Facebook when you are targeting the masses as your audience. This video isn't for anyone and everyone
