The corporate world is well-known for high salaries, flashy suits and skyscrapers, but navigating the space as a Muslim can be tricky. So we've created a survival guide for some of the most awkward situations a Muslim might encounter.

    About us
We're Ibrahim & Mohsin - ex-city lawyers and authors of "Halal Investing for Beginners". We've been studying investments and the traditional Islamic sciences for 13+ years. Over the year we've been published by the Financial Times, the World Economic Forum, Foreign Policy etc.
Today we run a sharia-compliant wealth management platform that manages over $35m in assets. We make videos about investment, personal finance, careers, and entrepreneurship.
We do this to make downtrodden communities better-off. To take people of colour, Muslims, and minorities from being among the poorest in society to the richest.

Jazakallah Khair for sharing these tips. I've been abaya wearing and moved up in ranks, but you do have to work at least 2x harder than everyone else to move up. However the greatest challenge has been the clash of values with senior colleagues - not anything controversial but things like being honest, thinking long term, putting the benefit of the public over personal career gains etc and expecting to show a blind eye to dodgy activities like fudging data, or not being honest with clients etc. This is what has been the greatest struggle and the barrier to getting promoted despite working SO hard and doing an excellent job in the role. I have found they are very happy when you sit beneath them and do as they are told and work like a machine, but the moment you challenge them - all hell breaks loose and you are then bullied really badly. This cycle is not just what Muslim women face; although it's worse for Muslims as Islamophobia plays a part too. It's like they can't comprehend or square in their head how a hijabi and abaya wearing super competent woman can be SO happy and confident to choose and love to be a Muslim.

Not only avoid shaking hands, just don't do it. Even if you take your approach, you only now put Muslims in that position who refuse as being extreme, when it isn't. Its a tenant of our faith. You know the hadith of it being better for an iron rod going through your hand than to touch a non mahram woman...

Thanks for the practical video. I definitely think it's important to be upfront about your values early on ideally to set the tone. I also think it's important to not have to hide anything and live a 'double life' for various reasons; better to be open and face the consequences rather then pretend.
I don't think the issues like drinking, prayer or even hand-shakes are that big; they are a little awkward, but it's manageable. What's harder imo its the values part; I think it's challenging to have good relations with others if they think your views are bigoted or something like that.
I think it's fine to work in corporate when you have to for money or for experience or whatever, but I don't know about the long run. I can't see you rising to the top without facing some serious issues or having to compromise. it seems to me that we'd setup our own businesses or environments where we can be comfortable. I don't know if that's too idealistic, but I think that would be optimal. Would probably be better for our communities as well.

He says “do not leave salah no matter what” is better than leaving it just because situations did not allow. Good tip about joining the prayers rather than missing them. There's an authentic hadith about the permissibility of joining Dhuhr+Asr, Maghrib+Isha in the absence of rain or travel. So you can join the two daytime prayers and the two nighttime prayers but you cannot join the daytime + nighttime prayers
Most importantly, there is NO concession for missing the prayer so you can't join Asr+Maghrib+Isha for example.
Let's remember that Tayammum (dry ablution) was legislated to avoid missing the prayer.
And if you think you're likely to miss a prayer (e.g., Asr) due to work/travel, just join it earlier with dhuhr and you know that box is ticked 😊

This is very defeatist brother. If you have to compromise this much to do your job and in the place you live then try to find another place to work or move all together. I doubt you would have any of these problems in some muslim majority country. Ideally in a place like the UK you would only deal B2B in trade with non muslims in a social context that you would have far more leverage. If you are employed then ultimately the employer can tell you do anything within reason.

It is HARAM to pray in bathrooms!!!
It was narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that it is haraam to pray in certain places, including bathrooms. It is not permissible to pray in them. It was narrated in a saheeh report from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that he said: “All the earth is a mosque except for graveyards and bathrooms.” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, al-Salaah, 291; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Sunan al-Tirmidhi, 262). “Bathroom” refers to every place that is used for the purpose of relieving oneself; it is not permissible to pray in any such place. This room on the edge of which there is a toilet is not considered to be a bathroom so long as there is a barrier between it and the bathroom, with a wall and door etc. In this case prayer in that room is valid, because the prohibition on praying in bathrooms is because they are usually naajis (impure), and this room is not like that. And Allah knows best.
