With Sony TVs you have to switch the 2.1 inputs to “enhanced format/VRR” in the input settings on the TV to achieve 120hz @ 4K. Coming from a Sony TV owner who uses it as a monitor and for gaming.
i already posted the answer 5 days ago. i wonder if he saw our 2 posts.
All the games you listed performed the exact same (without the external graphics card) as my system on a GTX 760 (4GB) and i7 2600k @ 4.5Ghz with 8GB 1600Mhz 9-9-9-24-128-1T RAM. Every single title I've tested got the same results yours did, wild
Give it another 12 years, we'll have APUs with the performance of a 13600K and an RTX 3060 and the power draw of a wasp!
@@stoneymahoney9106 this is the way of the future mini pcs are the way to go and adding a external gpu for extra power is a great idea.
Put tv into game mode. The pc will detect whatever the tv connects to initially. The pc wont display what the tv is capable of because the tv has 2 modes that are completely separate.
X2 here. Our Sony needed this to make it go into higher frame rates.
and the cable must be 8k rated.
@@mcbowler guess you didn't listen to the video. He said it worked on his LG. So the cable supported it.
@@killabandit Not sure if he reused the same cable.. looks to me he used whatever was going through the ceiling. But you are right, I didn't pay that much attention.
@@mcbowler he literally said it was the same cable…

So for a millisecond there, I was having confused flashbacks between cycling across beautiful scenery & bridges in Japan & this gaming bedroom setup.
gamer's bedroom be all skitch
had the video minimized for a second and thought somehow a JAJ video was playing.
120hz on Sony: Go to Settings -> Channels & Inputs -> External Inputs -> HDMI signal format and select the right hdmi port and set it to one of the enhanced formats. For me it's Enhanced Format (VRR)
Thanks bro, great fun and good fun 😊
ETA Prime also did an awesome review as well.
Loved seeing a bit of external GPU performance 👍
Mucho appreciated 👍
Tv could have a “game mode” or “pc” mode that unlocks low latency and higher resolution
As a guy who uses 1080 as a standard resolution, even locking myself down to 60fps, this computer would be awesome for my usecase. Especially since I would be playing games like Factorio.
I lock to 60 as well. Thermals! Someone think of the thermals!
The power of the sun… in the palm of my hand
I would guess that the newest mobile apu from AMD ( the Ryzen 9 7940 ( can’t remember the letter designations too well…I just know the 40 series is the insane ( theoretically ) apus and the 45 series holds the core monsters )) might get the results you want.
A tiny pc that costs much more then a full tower for much less hardware traces, much less speed on the mobo and ram, much less gpu power, much less pcie lanes, for previous gen cpu and apu, amd just releases their apu 2.5 years later for not even reasonable prices. These were awaited 2.5 years ago, not now at a superficially "ryzen" price.
I JUST HAD THIS ISSUE ON MY TV! My issue was turning color down to 4:2:0 instead of 444 and that should fix it I think.
So... I have had a UM690 for about a month and while it does OK at many tasks... the 680M integrated GPU is NOT a 1080P gaming chip in most cases even with 4800mHz memory running in dual channel mode. Ive found I can get ~45fps-60fps in recent titles at low and sometimes medium settings, but that is with the cooling fan cranked to 100% and this miniPC sounding like a little jet engine trying to take off from behind the TV.
For HTPC stuff it works fantastically, although at its current price, it's a very *EXPENSIVE* HTPC. For gaming you really want to look at something like the HX99G which includes a discrete laptop GPU (6600M or 6650M). I don't consider adding an eGPU as a valid solution right now because an eGPU enclosure by itself costs 70% ($300) the cost of the barebones UM690 kit before you add the cost of another GPU into the mix.
This mini PC is really cool!
Awesome idea kyle! Can’t wait to see the end of the video!
Always good to see you Kyle!
The CPU benchmark scores from the cheapest model (349,-) are better than the scores from my overclocked r1700 PC, unreal!
Please remember to inform people that external/laptop psus only have a Power Efficiency of 50%, making that a 150-200w desktop pc.
I ordered this because of 3 reasons:
1. I need a Gaming PC but also have limited desk space
2. I already have a PS5 for high end gaming but since the PS5 doesn't support PS3, PS2 and PS1 Game discs I can now play old games on this
3. I need a budget PC for the next 2.5 years (for work)
Switch the settings on the Sony to VRR it’s on the HDMI menu
I have 3 of the UM690's in my observatory for running the telescope rigs, working great! However, one small problem was one of the power brick appears to shutdown, even with the PC off. the green light on the power brick goes off after an undetermined period, and then the PC wont start when needed, need to remove and reinsert the wall side cable and that seems to get it going again. So don't know what's going on there.
Is it hard to find an aftermarket / 3rd party psu for this pc?
@@poinguan It is a standard 19v laptop psu, 120w, with an 5mm x 2.5mm barrel connector I believe. Plenty on Amazon for around $30-40, so shouldn't be hard to get one.
@bitwit how would this unit fair for strictly streaming via OBS into twitch? Looking for a mobile setup that I can take around to stream live DJ'ing mixes
I just bought a gx99g from them a few weeks back. I'm planning on making it a PC/TV box/DVD copy machine! 🤘😁
Awesomesauce video, Kyle!! So while you and the kitties are lying down, you can yearn to plug it back into the living room TV. Because you know the cats won't let you get up.
i am watching you on my Sony oled 80J model from 2021 on a Ryzen 3400G AT 120hz. I had to go into the channel and input settings. External input, HDMI format. on input 3 and 4 I can select enhanced VRR and got 120 HZ with a 2.1 HDMI cable. your model should be a 80K and have the same settings. I hope you see this.
No hate on the external gpu. It makes sense, to an extent. But the sheer size of that guy alone is about the size of a small tower. That being said, for simple games that mini looks like a great option
You should try to use DisplayPort over USB Type C. That might be able to get you 4k 120Hz.
I've just permanently associated the montage song with fan showdown 🤣
Still haven't spackled those extra holes in your ceiling!
What I need to do with my new Sony Oled TV is change a setting for the HDMI port wich I'm using, to unlock that 4k 120hz.
For my consoles, I changed the HDMI port to "enhanced variable refreshrate"
Also, It's most likely that only HDMI ports 3 and 4 support 4k 120hz
Slightly different use case but this is where the ROG Ally shines. It is similar power but with a screen. So, you can both play docked or "on the go." Granted, you are spending a few hundred bucks extra.
Stealth PC, pretty cool man.
Love the comedy/Tech combo Kyle 😅 Keep at it man.
Making bad jokes about cancer is comedy? 🤔
Liking the music in this video reminds me of videos from several years back pre-panda, pre-crypto, pre-shortage, pre-war era of videos
lol, i have the exact same TV mount. It is slow as hell. Luckily its my outside TV and not used too much.
I'm baffled by the Witcher 3 performance. I was getting that performance out of an AMD APU like right after it's release. It was literally the top CPU that supported the APU at that time, and it was the first APU. Granted, I think I was running it at 720p, not 1080p, but still, that's a WHILE back.
Poor optimization
I'll bet he's trying to run the recent DX12 release. Ive had perf issues on several systems with that version and have successfully mitigated those by running the DX11 version from the game launcher.
There was a graphics overhaul recently. It now supports dlss and stuff. Its completely done, so that would be why the performance is different than then.
13:55 dig into input settings like most TV users do. 120hz forced mode is in there.
Love your cats hahaha
Until you get around to properly fix the noob holes in your ceiling near your bedroom tv mount you should fill them with white blutac.
Local co-op haha in the bed? My man has plans!
Kyle, you'll get better performance with Witcher 3 if you use the DX11 version when lauching the game. The DX12 version only recently came out and while it includes more graphical settings, it's performance suffers greatly.
I've been using old hp elite desk tiny PCs for this exact purpose. I hate the smart TV OSs and slow processors. I have a 6700t with 16gb of RAM and 1 TB of local storage onboard. Connected to my gaming PC through Steam Link and then have my Plex system on my r720 nas. It's an awesome setup and my family loves they can play and do whatever they want and have plenty of horsepower to do it for less than 200 bucks a pop, including ram and SSD upgrades.
I didn’t need the opening scene, kinda shocking, but nice little box probably.
Casino is a MASTERPIECE of cinematic genius.
@@Johnny2Gats wow. Such impress.
PC smol, yeah yeah!!!! PC cool, yeah yeah!!!! Cool cooler neat neat.......MORE CAT PLEASE!!!!!!
Just here to say, goated thumbnail
This sponsor has perfect timing. I actually need a Windows key for a PC build I’m giving to my brother.
Try and HDMI 2.1 to usb cable for the Sony TV.
is this a good mini pc for photo editing using adobe photoshop and lightroom?
13:48 Not sure if you care, but our first/last name are being shown, along w/your e-mail
The song at 13 made me thing the video had ended and it went off to abroad in japan, walked out of the room to grab something.
Everything ok what's up with length between videos. Ya gunna start doing builds again like big and watercooled like before. Chrometheis etc
Can't wait for something like this. In 3-4 years I will have to replace my rig and by then? This is likely to be less than $500
Completely irrelevant to the video but damn those hoodies look so comfy. Reminds me of some stone washed jeans I wore as kid in the 90s, I'll be picking one up soon. Keep up the good work, I love your videos kyle
12:48 Why does it sound like there is fan smoke testing going on?
Bet you didn't enable "Game Mode" on the TV? Took me ages to figure it out on my Samsung QN90B...
is this something that can handle steam games? I have a bunch of old games that I miss playing. And can you use a Xbox PC controller?
I wanted to see its performance with undervolting and overclocking.
Why is it back to school. We are halfway through the school year(at least in the us)
I'm a livin' in a box!
I think it's your TV. LG was the first company adopt 120 hz tvs!!
I bet it has a good personality 👍
The new 780m based mobile APUs will be out soon and they are rumoured to have a 20-25% GPU performance uplift as a result of moving to RDNA3.
They will also support even faster DDR5 memory too.
KYLE READ THIS! you have to enable a setting in hdmi options on the tv to get 120hz !!!
Cool dude, hope your idea works out!
13:04 Boi is watching Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring
Now you needed to mount the external gpu behind the TV 🤣🤣🤣
If I want to play diablo 4 at 1080p 60fps will this be fine?
Is the ram working at more than 4900mhz or is it limited ?
basically a laptop without a screen that needs to be plugged in all the time
About Witcher 3, run it with DX11.
I had to switch the specific hdmi source to vrr in the settings of my sony A80J and that option was only available after multiple software updates
i like that you blur the windows code, but then when u right clicked it, it shows the code anyway :p
That's an OP Plex server.
Mini Pcs are the future, the old heads going to get mad
i dont see that happening. Knowing that gpus get bigger every year
I wonder if Kyle watches Abroad in Japan or if that montage music was just a coincidence.
I would never have bet on that intro. Pun intended
Good to see you back!
Got it backwards bro…Sony is the fanboy 😂
Nice video man, God bless you
I have the same box. It's a great little system but it is not really that good for gaming - adding an eGPU that dwarfs the main system itself just seems silly. The APU is ok for low end gaming, but I don't think this is what the system is really designed for. At least it is way better than the previous gen APU, which was nearly unusable for any gaming at all.
It is great as secondary PC for basic/lower-end computing needs (productivity), HTPC, and as a virtualization node (I used mine to run Proxmox). This would be an ideal system to give to an aspiring IT person needing a system to tinker and learn IT/programming/virtualization skills.
I will say that servicing this thing is a bit of a mess - I mean they send you extra feet because you will mess up the adhesive removing the original feet to unscrew the box to access the internals - hopefully you only need to do this once.
Kyle try settings like HDMI deep coler off, maybe Sony tv has it, makes my LG 60 hz a1 oled support 1080p 120hz
don't lie, how much whiskey did you have before the filming of this? I see you
Should pull a linus and put a full pc in your attic
Indeed, my arousal right now is IMMENSE!
Moving overseas and was thinking about getting a gaming laptop but honestly I might just get this and a monitor.
0:46 Great choice of words. I hope you never get the full experience.
Which hdmi cable is he using ?
Interesting for sure.
for emulation, it would be awesome.
Dammit, now I want Pop Tarts...
It’s not about the size, it’s about the fps
We need more Lyle
Minisforum were great (and cheap) when they were making small pc tower cases all in one with the motherboard, as an upgradeable concept, not when they delve into half proprietary unupgradeable mini form factors limited to ddr4, it's pcielanes, yadayada, it's very late in the gen, they should go for 500 to max 600, not so close to a 1000 $
good review thanks
skip 0:55-2:00 PEOPLE ARE EXCITED. You purchased 5400 but received 5600?
Dope video bro!🙏🏼
Witcher 3 makes all igpu's struggle and makes all Intel igpu's cry
Casino reference was spot on. Nicky (Joe Peshi) is crazy sawed off shotgun. Such a great soundtrack to that movie. The organs combined with vocals in House of Rising Sun by the Animals gives me goosebumps everytime. Ordered the HX99G model with its discrete gpu. Figures to be so much better for gaming than this model.
Hilarious how the GPU is massive compared to the actual PC.
Hey Kyle have you tried the drop-down „choose refresh rate“? @13:47
It would have been a good idea to have the PC tested as is without immediately updating the RAM. Now people will probably be disappointed.
