    Of all the expat advice channels, Reekay is the wisest and the most
    succinct. He obviously comes from a successful background in the
    States, whereas many others fall into the "drifter" category, offering
    their diatribes on Filipino failures mixed in with a truckload of verbal
    diarrhea that has no clear point. Kudos to you, Reekay!

      Stock market in the USA ?, firstly, I think this country uses capitals to abbreviate their Nations name. I like the country but I am not a citizen of such. Secondly, give your head a shake I'm probably younger than you and I am quite sure I could out run you in a 10K , due to my international ranking. I could go on. Believe me though when I say I give much more than I take from the PH. I am a physician that has spent many days and weeks at my personal risk, repairing botched surgeries, treating the poor, and backpacking my own pharmaceuticals into very remote villages so children could live out there natural lives in the PH. I do this for no fee, or expectations.So, get back to your books , study hard and watch the conjecture and uneducated guessing please.

      No charge for the lesson, just be kind to someone for me... That's all I request or charge you. BTW it is not so much punctuation as it is grammar and respect for the country you speak of.Countries abbreviations are all capitalized and full spelling ALWAYS starts with a capital letter out of respect? Yes, traditional grammar, however it is what it is Would one spell duterte such as this ? Or Duterte like this , from a position of respect? BTW, I will be volunteering my time again in the Philippines in 6 months, if you or your relatives need medical help. Let me know , maybe I could be of help as a physician and general surgery.

    Hi Henry. Both your rules revolve around one main theme; likely problems to anticipate while on the hunt for the perfect woman (by one's own definition) while roaming around the Philippines. You bring very good advice Henry to all the guys considering the walk down the same path. Let me also qualify my comments with that there is nothing wrong with seeking companionship in the above referenced way. It is part of the Philippine culture at this point, much different from western U.S. culture. The foreigner looking however must be prepared for two things (set in stone). #1 The Philippine woman (Filipina) is going to be as loyal as the day is long to her man and there is only one man and it must be a monogamous relationship that she will give "her all" to. They are steadfast in the belief of making their man happy to the best of their ability no matter what and this makes the Filipina a VERY GOOD companion. #2 She is expected and she is going to help her family to the greatest extent possible. Her and her husband have a responsibility to her family (set in stone). It doesn't matter if there is only one piece of bread to share or a whole pig. She is going to want to give 1/4 of the piece of bread to her family and prepare a meal fit for a king for her man out of the other 3/4's of the piece of bread. There are some very happy men in the Philippines. They are all husbands to some very fine Filipina's. There are also some very happy western men living in the Philippines with their western wives (or sometimes girlfriends), as rare as it is, those people have a common thread.....they are givers to the community in which they live and this creates acceptance and a tranquil existence. The Philippines is a wonderful and beautiful place to inexpensively spend One's time whether you are "on the hunt" or not. One caveat.....if a foreigner makes the effort to learn the dialect, "everything" goes MUCH BETTER.

      Exactly...my experience, as well. May i add the advice i received from a pinay, in that do not marry anyone from the "province's, find someone in the general Manila area...totally different sort of woman...

      What a load of baloney! I have known many Filipinas who have an old expat and a "boyfriend" their own age. I know another Filipina married to a Pinoy. He cheats and so does she. I'm a woman by the way and take it from me, there are good and bad in every culture. What happens is expat men can't understand the language or culture so they "fall in love" because the woman appears perfect. Anytime you marry outside your own culture you will NOT see the person so clearly. Time reveals all. You got lucky, your wife is nice. Most won't be so "lucky".

    Great Vid's Reekay. Never been to Phil's but these rules apply in all developing Countries.
    So Many expat Men ( and Women) are so weak. Be humble but be Alpha. Never buy real estate unless You are rich. Do not feel sorry for People. Life is hard for all of Us sooner or later.
    Learn to tell White lies. If You really want People out of Your business move around frequently. Can always return. Living in Hotels is great. Don't tell them You want a monthly rate. Stay a few days first to see How nice they are , have a story that You are just in for a few days. See the true personalities. THEN ,if they are nice People , negotiate a longer stay. Surround Yourself with good vibes. If You have assets don't tell. You are a simple pensioner.

    My biggest disadvantage in the Philippines is my temper. My understanding is that it is always always always disadvantageous to lose one's temper. Coming from a small city in the US I am not accustomed to being harassed by street hustlers and beggars, I have to admit there were a few times in the Philippines where I was really on the verge of losing it on some of those types of people.

    • @Lifebeyondthesea
      @Lifebeyondthesea  8 лет назад +4

      the best way to avoid having a 'reaction'.. is to have a 'response' ready in your mind. memorize a short, polite answer to handle those situations. and make that your response. something simple and short. i often will say, 'no, thank you.. (smile), no thanks." as i walk away.

    • @maxpolaris99
      @maxpolaris99 8 лет назад +2

      LifeBeyondTheSea - Philippines I learned how to deal with those pedestrian everyday situations, I'm talking about where your sitting down on a bench near a food vendor eating and they come up and will not take no for an answer and will not leave, giving me the impression that they thought they owned that bench and anyone that sat down on it was required to fall for their scam/hustle as the price for peace or leave.
      Like I said I only experienced something to that extreme a couple of times but I was on the verge of losing my temper. I manage to just ignore them for what seemed like a really long time while they just stood there having some kind of debate with themselves. They did eventually withdraw to their perch giving me dirty unfriendly looks from that distance.
      I had half a mind to walk over there after I finished eating and punch one of them in the face, just for haha's but I had just barely enough sense to just leave in the opposite direction. LOL

      last week i had about 45 minutes to kill while waiting on lyn to get off work. so i hung out on a park bench at the local boardwalk. soon enough a guy comes by to sell me some pearl jewelry. i politely told him, "no, thank you. not today." but he persisted. then he sat down next to me and kept trying to put them in my hand or on my lap. i kept putting them back into his box and after 3 times (that's my rule) of telling him, "No".. when he wouldn't go away, i made it interesting. he told me 2,000 pesos for a pearl necklace. i told him, "but i only have 300 pesos with me." he said, okay.. only 1,000 pesos for me. again i told him, "i only have 300 pesos." when i got up to walk away he said, "okay, i sell to you for 300 pesos." i told him, "no.. that would not be right. that necklace is worth 2,000 pesos. i could not give you only 300 for it." just then an expat came by with his g/f. i said, "see that foreigner?.. you should ask him. he has a g/f with him.' and i walked the other direction. the guy got confused which of us to follow and gave up on both of us. :)

      In my situation it was 3 guys on two motorbikes that walked over to me while I was having a bite to eat they wanted me to get on the back of one of their bikes and go to this Condominium Investment Presentation.
      If I just went with them and sat through the presentation I would get coupons for freee food at McDonalds Pizza Hut etc, A tailored suit, floral arrangements and AND be entered into a prize drawing 1st place Motorbike, 2nd place Air conditioner or refrigerator etc etc
      I heard about this scam in Thailand, if you were lucky you just got to walk 10 miles home.
      It pissed me off to think they thought I was so stupid as to get on the back of a bike with 3 guys I never saw before in my life and just let them take me anywhere and that I was so weak willed that they could pressure me into it.
      Damn they pissed me off.

      About the women-- they view foreigners as ATM/economic security. This is the situation in ALL developing countries. They will trap you for sure. They especially like old foreigners because the old guys die sooner leaving the young Filipina RICH and free to be with someone her own age. Truth hurts but it is what it is.

    After 6 yrs here, you are pretty right-on with your points here ...
    I'll try to add something ... People are people, world wide ... We are just raised in different cultures so we have slightly different ways or ~fluff on top of our humanity...
    As was stated here in this video, don't do certain things. If you would not do it back home, do not do it here either. These are human beings, people here, same as back home. They just have a different set of values than what you have from your home and culture.
    Spend and give as you please, but be a responsible, grown-up about it.. If you lose something that you did not intent to lose or spend money you want back, sorry but you did it. Not the girl, or Mom, or guy, or the neighbor, or the carabao, you did it, you allowed it to happen, and please hold the crying when you, the grown-up man(?) made a teenager mistake. Why do so many guys make adolescent-type mistakes here and then cry to the world over their mistakes?

    • @Lifebeyondthesea
      @Lifebeyondthesea  7 лет назад +3

      exactly. out of the hundreds of men i've spoken with over the years, those who were scammed did NOT have the money illegally stolen out of their bank account with a fake password. the guy himself made the decision to wire or hand over that money. granted, under false pretense. but instead of using patience or discernment to spot the lies.. he just handed over the money willingly. it was a BAD DECISION on his part. he let a 20 year old girl con him. as you stated, if you wouldn't do it back home don't do it in the PH.

    Good video. Always good to remind people of the traps. As for investments, the wisdom is that the investment of a lifetime comes along about once a month if you are looking for one. The fake investment schemes come by more often than that. Even if it looks just great, best to pass it up and wait till the best time for you and be super cautious.

      when i was living in the states, if i ever was in the market to buy a new car.. i never rushed. my mantra was, "There is ALWAYS a car for sale somewhere." no need to rush in and buy it just because the salesguy is hyped and foaming at the mouth for a commission. same with buying a house. so in a foreign country, even more important to use patience.

    When you first step foot in the Philippines you had long term in mind and never visited there before ? Am I Correct ?? I ask this because it's obviously more advantageous to visit before moving there permanently. But looking back, do you feel that in this age of technology some people can just take there time, do there homework and just make the move w/o visiting if they feel that confident in what they want or would you be 100% against this ?

      in my case, i was motivated to be with the filipina i'd had a relationship with for over 2 years in the usa. (she lived in cebu, commuted back and forth.) so when i moved to the PH, i spent 12 months doing what research i could, but my mind was made up to move there and stay, no matter what. but that was my circumstances. would i recommend it to others? not really. the PH is not for everybody. some people can't take it anymore after 6 months and never come back. others don't plan their finances well. the safe bet is to visit at least once, but visit an area that is tropical. there's really no point in coming to the PH for 2 weeks and spending it in Manila. a person could experience urban blight in their own country. check out the smaller islands like bohol, panglao, iloilo or even travel north of cebu city to bogo or roxas. or go south to dumaguete, toldedo or bacolod. me, i was on a mission. for me the PH was a backdrop to my romantic situation. i was prepared to adjust to anything so we could be together.

    So your lease pays your last 2 months rent? Is that generally accepted? What if there is damage or the apt needs cleaning after you leave?

    • @Lifebeyondthesea
      @Lifebeyondthesea  6 лет назад

      upon entry, most landlords want the current month's rent and a 'last months rent'. so at end of lease there is only 1 month that is 'consumable'. plus a $100 damages deposit. that is a fair and normal lease arrangement. anything beyond that, like pre-dated checks or high deposits i would just walk away from if they won't negotiate it down and in writing. and always, always get and keep receipts for paid rent.

      either they stay together, and the guy usually has some woman on the side.. or he just abandons the family and finds another woman, living together without marriage. it's a rotten idea, no divorce, in my opinion. it prevents women from moving on in their life to find a better mate. they are the ones left with the kids. the men don't care, they just leave.

    A good bit of this info is pretty much common sense. However, there is always that one person who doesn't listen or is absolutely clueless to things like this. When I was in the Military we were always told when we went somewhere that we needed to dress a certain way as to not draw attention to yourself, ie no flashy jewelry, pants without pockets etc. Yet again there was always this one guy who didn't listen. Hopefully someone will see this video and learn something from it. Good information for them to know and also good info with the women and hiring a maid.

      yes, that's very important. and similar to the business angle.. during a year here, talk to business owners who have survived more than a few years. they'll give you information that is worth it's weight in gold from experience. just like getting to know the married couples who have good marriages. it's all about networking with the right people, making those friendships and connections the first year.

    What about fixing your new girl friends family's house?

    • @Lifebeyondthesea
      @Lifebeyondthesea  8 лет назад +8

      everyone has to make their own judgment call, but i'll share my parameters. for one thing, a girlfriend of only 2 months has no right to be asking for home renovations. that's some pretty big cash in the PH for a room addition, new roof, etc. if she's been a girlfriend for 9+ months and it looks like she's a good woman, okay.. then consider it. but not when she's still in the "new girlfriend" phase. as for buying a house, me.. i would not consider buying a house until after 2 or 3 years of marriage. not just because things might change, but also to pick a proper distance from her family so we have our own life and privacy. that decision of shopping out an island takes time to do together. but buying a house in her name just because she's a fiance'?? no way.

    • @rickybenson67
      @rickybenson67 8 лет назад +3

      Home renovations for a new girlfriend of 2 months should be a big warning sign that she is either scamming you or that you are trying to hard to win her affection with throwing money at her to try and get her. What ever happened to just dating?

    Reekay has right, but it goes further then that, do not take a girl/woman from philippine origin to your room or house, because, whe you 2 are alone, then they can accuse you from rape her , and your ass is going to end up in to jail, and when you do not get a lawayer, you can sit there for years, before you are going to trial, or the woman/girl wants a big deal of money from you, to drop all the charges agaist you, so be aware, i hear it more and more, you be warned, do NOT get alone with a woman or girl in a room, philippine jails are not like western jails, and the law? a lot of them a corrupt, so think twice, No. 3 times before you do stupid things like that.

      i've met SO many guys with "buyer's remorse" it's truly a sad situation. guys who jumped into marriage right away, had some kids and now.. they spend their time at the bar cheating on their wife with the bargirls. my comments are towards avoiding that situation. rushing into marital commitment brings sorrow and heartbreak to too many good-hearted filipinas. much better a man WAIT and not get married until he truly knows he is ready to make that commitment. it's best for him and for filipinas in the long run.

      as for dating/marrying younger women, i wrote an article on this at the following link. as long as both are over 18, it really is nobody's business to scorn others in such a relationship. such people who do have no basis other than their own preference with no respect for others. people are free to make their own decisions on who they want to love.

      LifeBeyondTheSea - Philippines It's good if other people think it that way too but most people think that young girls are just after the money of their foreign lover or husband.It can make you think if such relationship only exist in philippines.In my opinion it's ok as long as they love each other and the man was good and the girl won't abandon her foreign husband till the end.

      i know of an expat who is dating a filipina in her late 20's.. and his family back home is putting together an "intervention" to bring a stop to his relationship with her. nobody ever bothered to even know the filipina. all based on ignorant assumptions. fortunately the expat has told them to pound sand and he's going to choose his own relationship himself. it's none of their business, yet that's how vehement some people are against age-gap relationships.

      depends how long you've known her and how well you know her. and how much money we're talking about. but generally if a guy has only known her online, never met her, and it's only been a few weeks.. red-flag if she's asking or implying she needs $100+ to solve some problem you can't verify. i don't look to the dating sites for a relationship since i live here. plenty of women i meet in person. the key rule is; "Trust, but verify.", which from what you describe sounds like you've done. go with your mind and gut, not just your heart.
