Hi Eli, your videos are generally enjoyable but when interviews with people are too long it's just boring. Like in this one, not much of the city was shown too much talking people that wasn't interesting enough, I had to run forward most of it... Was this the city st. Seraphim's monastery is in?

Eli I am so glad that you and your fellow Russian RUclips travel content creators are persisting in showing everything fascinating about Russia. Your travelogues are a treasure. I spent the summer in Moscow way back in 1988 as a student. I wish I could have explored outside of the zones that foreigners were kept to at the time. Your perseverance and that of the Russian people is inspiring. Friends, food, traditions, culture, art are all things we can focus on to bring us joy.
Can remember the thing with the zones tourists could visit, the "comfort and represent-zones I would call it".😊😉 But there were also some more privileged "earned and political reliable comrades" also from other Eastern Bloc countries, who were allowed to visit some places more than others.
When I was in the USSR, and even elsewhere in Europe, people thought I looked Eastern European. I don’t know why-I’m very WASP with a touch of Viking. But it did help me sneak on the train to a Russian friend’s dacha outside of Moscow. lol

Smalltalk and shopping are my biggest hobbies and I could have invented NATO, neoclassical capitalism and all the other stuff! We have a street named after him in Vancouver, it is one of the busiest intersection in the county. There is also a monument to him at the nearby airport. He was certainly a trailblazer in 1937 when he landed here. Best regards to you.

i'm french and born in 88 and we was also play on tank when meet military places haha. I'm stay 6 month in Nizhny Novgorod in 2019 after stayed Voronezh before the lockdow, i have also done many other cities and i must say Nizhny Novgorod is one of my favorite place, it's really beautifull and green and with an amazing aura, i really want go back here. I love how Nizhny Novgorod and many other Russian cities have improved so much over the years. Like Yekaterinburg for example, it has developed so much it looks like a mini Moscow now.
Interesting that you brought that up about Americans going over to the Soviet Union for work from the auto industry before the war, there’s one guy Robert Robinson. He spent over 40 years in the Soviet union he wrote a book about it called “Black on Red” if you can find it’s definitely worth a read

I was born and live in Nizhny Novgorod and I can assure you that no one, except this narrow-minded woodpecker, calls the Fedorovsky embankment "the cemetery of the Jedi." The place is called "on Fedorovsky." Well, the loopholes in the walls of the Kremlin are not intended for cannons at all, but for muskets -"squeakers" of the then soldiers of the Russian tsars - "streltsy". The cannons were located in towers, because in these towers there are crossfiring sectors and cannonballs, gunpowder and supplies were stored. @@chaitanyakindler8027 Um, do you remember when Lavrov told an entire conference hall fill with Indians that Ukraine started the war and hundreds of people, the entire audience, starting laughing at him? Yeah, he does better; as a sad sack comedy act maybe. My "western-mind" likes facts, honesty, and basic human decency, so Lavrov doesn't rank very high on my scale, I'm afraid. The MAGA people probably love him, though, so YMMV, although one shouldn't use the word mind in that context.
Very nice to see such a video about Nizhniy... Lived there 2 years and loved it. I wanted to stay in Russia but couldn't at that time. Now trying to get a resident permit and Nizniy might well be the final destination I'll choose.
@@mth4849 Yep... more than OK. Great town... Not very far so easy access to Moscow... more reasonable prices when it comes to real estate... even though prices rose... like everywhere unfortunately. What's missing the most for me, as a foreigner... direct flights abroad. It's really a pain in the axx to fly to Moscow each time I wanna go back to France.

I visited in 2011 when I rode my bicycle from Beijing to Amsterdam. The WWII museum made an impression. The highway got too busy so I took the ferry to the north bank in Fokino and enjoyed the nice quiet highway to Bor. A young cyclist there invited me in for something to eat, then his family accompanied me on the ferry so I could get a hotel and visit the Kremin.
When I was growing up in the US, I used to play on a tank. It was an M3 Stewart parked in front of an America Legion post located a block from my home. The hatches had been welded shut but kids shoved candy wrappers and soda cans into the observation slits so the tank was filled with trash.
And I played with my tanguska-antiaircraft-tank toy from GDR, dear comrades!😊😉 Or inspected a T 72 with my classmates, when we visited a NVA barracks back than.
@@robertrichard6107 Alltogether the Sherman was probably even a good tank against his maybe some times bad reputations. It was robust, reliable, produced in great numbers (a logistical advantage concerning spare parts delivery, ammunition production etc.) and drove with a car motor and I guess the according gasoline too, which was OK thanks to its moderate weight as a medium tank. Of course it was no match to a tiger or panthers of the German fascists. On the other hand one often overestimated the The role of heavy tanks, they are rather useful for breakthroughs or to stop breakthroughs. The percentage of by them killed tanks isn't very high as tanks are (much) more often were killed by infantry, PAK, mines and planes. The West Allied had a lack of good heavy tanks for a long time, I never understood, why they didn't arrange to get some Soviet ones.🤷 I can remember that indeed a classmate hurted himself, when we visited barracks of the army. He fell off a T 72 and broke his collarbone.
We also had (and still have) a T-34 at our Victory Park. As kids we used to get inside it and turn and lift the cannon of a tank. Unfortunately for us kids the tank was welded soon and now kids can only climb around it and not get inside. I think it was done for safety resons. =)

Yes, but in addition to the Dmitrievsky Tower, it has been since the 14th century, but it was remaked to match the color of the rest of the Kremlin (the former Kremlin stone parts were white; in memory of this, a White Tower was partially made of white stone). An important innovation in our fortifications, introduced by Italian fortifiers - barbacane, remote "strelnitsa" (there are few of them in Europe, and two of them in Russia: in Nizhny Novgorod and Moscow).
During the Tatar-Mongol invasion, all Russian architects and artisans were exiled to Central Asia to build cities, because the invaders themselves could not build. Therefore, after the 12th century, Russia is full of architecture built by Italian architects who were invited to restore Russian cities, because many cities were destroyed and burned by the Tatar-Mongols.

I am so thankful for these Russian channels. Those of us who grew up during the cold war, were kept in the dark about Russia. These channels have opened my eyes and how we were so lied to about Russia. I once feared Russia and now enamored by Russia.
I studied the Russian Revolution (and The Merchant of Venice) at Secondary school. I don’t even believe Shakespeare* wrote all that is claimed he did, but i am so glad i got to study the Russian Revolution for 2 years before ‘O’ levels. This was the first 2 years of secondary school, i was so pleased, so fascinated, and so fortunate. - *How can a guy in England during 1600 know intricate details of Italian law.?

Eli, if you are looking for a city with protected bicycle paths, come to Calgary. We have over 1000 km. of those here. Even in the middle of winter you will see people on them. Consider yourself invited. And thanks again for another wonderful documentary.
Nizhniy is very theatrical and artistic actually - it has graffiti by a lot of international famous artists, several amazing cinema, music and art festivals, several amazing museums. And very beautiful nature.
Nice to see Nishni again in this video with all the greenery and flowers. I visited it end of March this year for five days on my way from Moscow to Novosibirsk and Tomsk. The landscape was still all white, yet near the city limit of Nishni there was a small spot between trees without snow and a small group of Russians having picknick there in the sun. You're tough guys. Inside the town i saw the Volga-river still frozen and the streets full of water from the melting snow. I once just randomly jumped on a city-bus which headed to the periphery of town. There, to my surprise i saw a bavarian restaurant with even a Swiss flag on its outside. That made me curious, so i got off the bus at the next stop and had lunch in this restaurant. A funny experience. Send you all best and warmest wishes from Switzerland. In Nishni i loved to sit on a park-bench in front of the Kremlin and keep watching the huge river and the immense widh of the russian landscape. After my first visit of Russia during june 23 where i had seen just a small handful westerners, what i appreciated even more this march/april: during the whole month i did not meet a single westerner. Russia pure. I suppose the westerners were all afraid or/and completely brainwashed due to our western propaganda.
For a Swiss like me, in Russia EVERYTHING appears so breathtakingly huge. To go from Moscow to Smolensk f.e. is exactly the distance to cross Switzerland from its very east to its very west.
And, by the way, it seems a worldwide phenomenon that people tend to despise their own town, seeing it overly critical. One of the absurdities of life seems that people from the one city or country travel far to another-one, "because it's so much nicer there", while people from exactly the latter, fed up with it, travel to the first, "because it's so much nicer there."

I laughed at the Russian version of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” in the coffee shop. And appreciated the dry, understated but nonetheless cutting sense of humor you and your friends seem to share. Very Russian. I guess all those cold winters and historic upheavals are good for that. A fascinating look at a city about which I have heard but of which I knew nothing. Ford was investing in both Russia and Germany at the time. I guess those vehicles met in the war. Just read today terrorism incidents in Russia have doubled since last year. So I think I understand the sensitive situation which was referenced. I hope the politics of the time don’t interfere with your continued presence on RUclips, Eli. I follow several Russian vloggers. Nobody tells the stories of your country with such production quality like you. My wish for peace between our peoples. p.s. Like Moscow we have some pretty strong magnet effects in the US. New York for media, publishing, finance. LA for music and movies. San Fran and Seattle for tech. We’re a little more spread out. But there’s some powerful attractors here too.
Oh this is really funny. Apparently the geographical cretinism is spreaded so much in it's severe stage across western education systems that people don't know not only foreign, but thier own countries. Yes, the more famous Vancouver is the one in British Columbia in Canada. But there's also Vancouver in the state of Washington, which is definitely not in Canada. And the famous Chkalov's flight through the North Pole was from Moscow to that Vancouver in the state of Washington. The amount of "correcting" people here made me chuckle)

On my bucket list is visiting Russia, it seems like a paradise for travelers, people are friendly and the country is so interesting...some day it will happens. But the language is a problem...i have tried to do online thingies but to no success...darn! Well tanx for another great video. 🙏🏼👍🏼
Languages are a lot easier to learn by immersion. If you are in Russia and there is a lot of Russian around you, and people with no English so you have to learn to rely on Russian, you learn to learn fast.

I've been living in Nizhny Novgorod since 1991 and I love it here. I moved from Cheboksary when I was 16 y.o. and now I'm 50. I've changed 5 districts of the city so far, all of them have different advantages as well as disadvantages. Now I live in a detached house of my own in the outskirts of the city, so I enjoy nature, sunsets and my garden.

I write these words from Vancouver in the USA. Greetings! Well over 50 years ago I had an older man who was a local dentist doing some work on my teeth. My dentist while working on my teeth told me a story about how he meet Chalov. When my dentist was a young man he worked at a local clothing store here in Vancouver. General Marshall who was in command of the northwest military district at that time brought Chalov and his crew to the store to buy them some cloths. Here in Vancouver we have a street named after Chalov also many Russians have moved to Vancouver knowing that we have a connection with Ckalov. I enjoyed your video.

I got so excited when you showed the monument to Chkalov because I lived in Vancouver, Washington state USA for many years and lived right off a main road called Chkalov Boulevard! I always wondered where they got the street name from. Now I know who the street is named after. How exciting to learn a little piece of history like that!!!😊

Eli I am so glad that you and your fellow Russian RUclips travel content creators are persisting in showing everything fascinating about Russia. Your travelogues are a treasure. I spent the summer in Moscow way back in 1988 as a student. I wish I could have explored outside of the zones that foreigners were kept to at the time. Your perseverance and that of the Russian people is inspiring. Friends, food, traditions, culture, art are all things we can focus on to bring us joy.

Can remember the thing with the zones tourists could visit, the "comfort and represent-zones I would call it".😊😉 But there were also some more privileged "earned and political reliable comrades" also from other Eastern Bloc countries, who were allowed to visit some places more than others.
When I was in the USSR, and even elsewhere in Europe, people thought I looked Eastern European. I don’t know why-I’m very WASP with a touch of Viking. But it did help me sneak on the train to a Russian friend’s dacha outside of Moscow. lol

Hello Eli, this is Alan from Vancouver, Washington, USA. My jaw nearly dropped when you showed the monument to Valery Chkalov. We have a street named after him in Vancouver, it is one of the busiest intersection in the county. There is also a monument to him at the nearby airport. He was certainly a trailblazer in 1937 when he landed here. Best regards to you.

Когда они приземлились в США, шел дождь, люди встречали их как героев, все стояли под зонтами. Хорошие были времена. Чкалов погиб в 1938 году через год после этого перелета. Он испытывал новый самолет и погиб. Это была большая утрата для страны. Он чуть-чуть не дожил до Великой отечественной войны. Я знаю эту историю, потому что я живу в Нижнем Новгороде. Удивительно, что в США помнят его и знают!

I'm stay 6 month in Nizhny Novgorod in 2019 after stayed Voronezh before the lockdow, i have also done many other cities and i must say Nizhny Novgorod is one of my favorite place, it's really beautifull and green and with an amazing aura, i really want go back here.

I love how Nizhny Novgorod and many other Russian cities have improved so much over the years. Like Yekaterinburg for example, it has developed so much it looks like a mini Moscow now.

Interesting that you brought that up about Americans going over to the Soviet Union for work from the auto industry before the war, there’s one guy Robert Robinson. He spent over 40 years in the Soviet union he wrote a book about it called “Black on Red” if you can find it’s definitely worth a read

Imagine thinking you're going to be gone a couple years and boom 40 years go by before you can go "home". at least Robert lived a decent enough life by Soviet standards.

I was born and live in Nizhny Novgorod and I can assure you that no one, except this narrow-minded woodpecker, calls the Fedorovsky embankment "the cemetery of the Jedi." The place is called "on Fedorovsky." Well, the loopholes in the walls of the Kremlin are not intended for cannons at all, but for muskets -"squeakers" of the then soldiers of the Russian tsars - "streltsy". The cannons were located in towers, because in these towers there are crossfiring sectors and cannonballs, gunpowder and supplies were stored. Doesn't your praise primarly needs to go first of all to the architect of Russia's revival, a certain Vladimir Putin? Eli profits from his adorable work, as otherwise her videos would not bring joy, but utter sadness.

I visited in 2011 when I rode my bicycle from Beijing to Amsterdam. The WWII museum made an impression. The highway got too busy so I took the ferry to the north bank in Fokino and enjoyed the nice quiet highway to Bor. A young cyclist there invited me in for something to eat, then his family accompanied me on the ferry so I could get a hotel and visit the Kremin.
When I was growing up in the US, I used to play on a tank. It was an M3 Stewart parked in front of an America Legion post located a block from my home. The hatches had been welded shut but kids shoved candy wrappers and soda cans into the observation slits so the tank was filled with trash.
Right? Everybody loves tanks. Tanks are cool.
And I played with my tanguska-antiaircraft-tank toy from GDR, dear comrades!😊😉 Or inspected a T 72 with my classmates, when we visited a NVA barracks back than.
They made over 40,000 Sherman M4s, use to see them at playgrounds occasionally,but then kids got hurt on them.
@@robertrichard6107 Alltogether the Sherman was probably even a good tank against his maybe some times bad reputations. It was robust, reliable, produced in great numbers (a logistical advantage concerning spare parts delivery, ammunition production etc.) and drove with a car motor and I guess the according gasoline too, which was OK thanks to its moderate weight as a medium tank. Of course it was no match to a tiger or panthers of the German fascists. On the other hand one often overestimated the The role of heavy tanks, they are rather useful for breakthroughs or to stop breakthroughs. The percentage of by them killed tanks isn't very high as tanks are (much) more often were killed by infantry, PAK, mines and planes. The West Allied had a lack of good heavy tanks for a long time, I never understood, why they didn't arrange to get some Soviet ones.🤷 I can remember that indeed a classmate hurted himself, when we visited barracks of the army. He fell off a T 72 and broke his collarbone.
We also had (and still have) a T-34 at our Victory Park. As kids we used to get inside it and turn and lift the cannon of a tank. Unfortunately for us kids the tank was welded soon and now kids can only climb around it and not get inside. I think it was done for safety resons. =)

Yes, but in addition to the Dmitrievsky Tower, it has been since the 14th century, but it was remaked to match the color of the rest of the Kremlin (the former Kremlin stone parts were white; in memory of this, a White Tower was partially made of white stone). An important innovation in our fortifications, introduced by Italian fortifiers - barbacane, remote "strelnitsa" (there are few of them in Europe, and two of them in Russia: in Nizhny Novgorod and Moscow).
During the Tatar-Mongol invasion, all Russian architects and artisans were exiled to Central Asia to build cities, because the invaders themselves could not build. Therefore, after the 12th century, Russia is full of architecture built by Italian architects who were invited to restore Russian cities, because many cities were destroyed and burned by the Tatar-Mongols.
Nizhny Novgorod must have a fascinating history, being on the confluence of great rivers. I must look it up. Thank you for sharing.

I am so thankful for these Russian channels. Those of us who grew up during the cold war, were kept in the dark about Russia. These channels have opened my eyes and how we were so lied to about Russia. I once feared Russia and now enamored by Russia.

I studied the Russian Revolution (and The Merchant of Venice) at Secondary school. I don’t even believe Shakespeare* wrote all that is claimed he did, but i am so glad i got to study the Russian Revolution for 2 years before ‘O’ levels.
This was the first 2 years of secondary school, i was so pleased, so fascinated, and so fortunate. - *How can a guy in England during 1600 know intricate details of Italian law.?

Nizhniy is very theatrical and artistic actually - it has graffiti by a lot of international famous artists, several amazing cinema, music and art festivals, several amazing museums. And very beautiful nature.
Nice to see Nishni again in this video with all the greenery and flowers. I visited it end of March this year for five days on my way from Moscow to Novosibirsk and Tomsk. The landscape was still all white, yet near the city limit of Nishni there was a small spot between trees without snow and a small group of Russians having picknick there in the sun. You're tough guys. Inside the town i saw the Volga-river still frozen and the streets full of water from the melting snow. I once just randomly jumped on a city-bus which headed to the periphery of town. There, to my surprise i saw a bavarian restaurant with even a Swiss flag on its outside. That made me curious, so i got off the bus at the next stop and had lunch in this restaurant. A funny experience.

In Nishni i loved to sit on a park-bench in front of the Kremlin and keep watching the huge river and the immense widh of the russian landscape. After my first visit of Russia during june 23 where i had seen just a small handful westerners, what i appreciated even more this march/april: during the whole month i did not meet a single westerner. Russia pure. I suppose the westerners were all afraid or/and completely brainwashed due to our western propaganda.
For a Swiss like me, in Russia EVERYTHING appears so breathtakingly huge. To go from Moscow to Smolensk f.e. is exactly the distance to cross Switzerland from its very east to its very west.
And, by the way, it seems a worldwide phenomenon that people tend to despise their own town, seeing it overly critical.
One of the absurdities of life seems that people from the one city or country travel far to another-one, "because it's so much nicer there", while people from exactly the latter, fed up with it, travel to the first, "because it's so much nicer there."

Нижний всё ещё пока уступает Москве по уровню жизни, но всё же явно к ней приближается, это видно с каждым годом, Нижний как по мне идеальный город, он имеет достаточной комфорт как крупный мегаполис, но и имеет некоторый деревенский уют, так как можно сесть на автобус и за 1 час доехать из любой точки доехать до окраины зо город на природу. I laughed at the Russian version of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” in the coffee shop. And appreciated the dry, understated but nonetheless cutting sense of humor you and your friends seem to share. Very Russian. I guess all those cold winters and historic upheavals are good for that. A fascinating look at a city about which I have heard but of which I knew nothing. Ford was investing in both Russia and Germany at the time. I guess those vehicles met in the war. Just read today terrorism incidents in Russia have doubled since last year. So I think I understand the sensitive situation which was referenced. I hope the politics of the time don’t interfere with your continued presence on RUclips, Eli. I follow several Russian vloggers. Nobody tells the stories of your country with such production quality like you. My wish for peace between our peoples. p.s. Like Moscow we have some pretty strong magnet effects in the US. New York for media, publishing, finance. LA for music and movies. San Fran and Seattle for tech. We’re a little more spread out. But there’s some powerful attractors here too.

Oh this is really funny. Apparently the geographical cretinism is spreaded so much in it's severe stage across western education systems that people don't know not only foreign, but thier own countries. Yes, the more famous Vancouver is the one in British Columbia in Canada.
But there's also Vancouver in the state of Washington, which is definitely not in Canada. And the famous Chkalov's flight through the North Pole was from Moscow to that Vancouver in the state of Washington.

Languages are a lot easier to learn by immersion. If you are in Russia and there is a lot of Russian around you, and people with no English so you have to learn to rely on Russian, you learn to learn fast.

The bolted down swing had me laughing for a good minute. :D The Jedi graveyard was also pretty funny. Another great video! There may be certain disadvantages living in this place, but at least we can say that the nature and architecture looks beautiful. And the people living there seemed pretty cool, at least when they weren't busy trying to have you arrested.
I've been living in Nizhny Novgorod since 1991 and I love it here. I moved from Cheboksary when I was 16 y.o. and now I'm 50. I've changed 5 districts of the city so far, all of them have different advantages as well as disadvantages. Now I live in a detached house of my own in the outskirts of the city, so I enjoy nature, sunsets and my garden.
Hi, when I was a child I played on Sherman tanks are the armory in Vancouver BC Canada. Also on tanks and guns in the army base in Chilliwack BC Canada.

I write these words from Vancouver in the USA. Greetings! Well over 50 years ago I had an older man who was a local dentist doing some work on my teeth. My dentist while working on my teeth told me a story about how he meet Chalov. When my dentist was a young man he worked at a local clothing store here in Vancouver. General Marshall who was in command of the northwest military district at that time brought Chalov and his crew to the store to buy them some cloths. Here in Vancouver we have a street named after Chalov also many Russians have moved to Vancouver knowing that we have a connection with Ckalov. I enjoyed your video.

I got so excited when you showed the monument to Chkalov because I lived in Vancouver, Washington state USA for many years and lived right off a main road called Chkalov Boulevard! I always wondered where they got the street name from. Now I know who the street is named after. How exciting to learn a little piece of history like that!!!😊
