- The 63rd Annual Tony (Antoinette Perry) Awards - Radio City Music Hall; Sunday, June 7, 2009 - Telecast on CBS
Hosted by Neil Patrick Harris (his first year); Presenters included Lucie Arnaz, Kate Burton, Kristin Chenoweth, Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, Edie Falco, Will Ferrell, Carrie Fisher, Jane Fonda, Hallie Foote, James Gandolfini, Lauren Graham, Colin Hanks, Marcia Gay Harden, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Lange, Frank Langella, Angela Lansbury, Audra McDonald, David Hyde Pierce, Piper Perabo, Oliver Platt, Susan Sarandon, John Stamos and Chandra Wilson; Special presentation by Bebe Neuwirth and the Broadway Inspirational Voices.
Performances from the musicals Billy Elliot the Musical, Guys and Dolls, West Side Story, Rock of Ages, Hair, Next to Normal, Shrek the Musical, Pal Joey (Stockard Channing), 9 to 5 (with Dolly Parton), plus cast members from touring productions of Jersey Boys, Legally Blonde, the Musical, and Mamma Mia! The opening number featured Sir Elton John, Liza Minnelli, and most memorably Bret Michaels (and his band Poison), who was hit in the head by a piece of scenery that was flying in, and was knocked to the floor, requiring stitches, and according to him, later caused him a brain hemorrhage in 2010. Lesson learned? Quit milking the applause in a group number and get the hell off-stage when your bit is done!
Billy Elliot swept the night with 10 awards (out of 15 nominations), including a Tony Awards first: the Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical was presented to the three young boys who shared the title role. - Развлечения
The sound tech must've been so busted after the show lol
Hezekiah Pabico Brett Michaels head too.
I remember my ex and I laughing at the time when Bret fell because we thought he had missed his cue to exit the stage, and it just looked funny on TV. Of course, I felt terrible afterward when I learned that he’d been seriously injured. 🙁
2009 was a year of sweeps. Billy Elliot swept the Tonys, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss swept the Grammys, and Slumdog Millionaire swept the Oscars.
None of those was a sweep. Sweeps don't happen in arts competitions. Aces, maybe, but not sweeps. Even Hamilton didn't sweep the Tonys.
why don't we have tony award openings like this one anymore where everyone can go onstage and sing and have a big dance party with all the nominated shows?
Michaela Hewitt-Clarke because unlistenable busy crap
and it's because "Hair" has a part at the end of the show when everyone is invited onstage to dance and they have a dance party at the end of every show. so they had the casts of the shows come join them onstage instead of the audience. that's why.
they kind of did at the 2004 Tony's
@@kennethdesmondmosley1075 if you don’t like brodway that’s fine but you don’t have to be rude about it just don’t watch any Broadway shows
simple!!..no one watches the AWFUL DEI, #BLM, WOKE garbage anymore!! 🥱🙄🤮😩💣👎
IN THE OPENING WHEN THEY ALL SING TOGETHER I LITERALLY CRIED MY EYES OUT OMFG
I'm glad "Shrek" wasn't completely snubbed. It won for the costumes.
well let's be fair the EXACT same thing happened with Disney's Beauty and the Beast on Broadway, the critics didn't really like it and it only won for the costumes....except Shrek didn't' have the staying power (must have been the Shrek fatigue that hurt it)
I think Next to Normal should have won best musical. Who agrees?
I agree!!
Can't compete with Billy Elliot
100%
I agree as it won the Pulitzer as was very unique at the time.
Cant beat billy elliot!
Liza, Dolly, and Elton John what a opening.
Thank you for posting. I was there in the 3rd balcony and in the last row. It cost me $260.00 and it was my first of 3 times at the Tonys but what memories.....and Dolly and Liza and Stockard Channing and everybody was onstage . I had to wear a tux and blend in but I was just and average joe who bought a ticket on Ticketmaster the day they went on sale. And I lived in Manhattan..... What glorious memories I have......of my times there in New York
Awesome! I would have loved to be there!
Billy Elliot won best musical but Next to Normal won the Pulitzer Prize so....
YESSSSSS! Marcia Gay Harden! What a performance, what an actress, what a talent! A great play heightened by a superb cast! Loved this play and love love love this actress. Thank you Theatre Wing for the recognition given to this wonderful play! Smile Always :-)
The duet with Stockard Channing and Aaron Tveit was so, so strange. Like, why? Lol it was just confusing and hard to enjoy any one part, which is a shame bc really I just wanted to hear Aaron belt out "I'm Alive."
2:06:44 that might be the greatest award speech ever!! So humble. So real. AND THEY THANKED THEIR TEACHERS!
well that was an interesting duet with Aaron
This program won 2 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Special Class Programs and Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Special.
I love Liza Minnelli! She is truly a treasure to the Broadway theatre.👏👏👏♥️♥️♥️
At 24:52 Neil Patrick Harris is telling producers to cash in by going "presidential." Well, at least one producer got close with Hamilton. Not the president, but his right hand man.
Beyond me how Aaron wasn’t nominated for best featured actor
I still don't and won't ever understand that!
2020 is Aaron’s year bet on it. Moulin Rouge and Jagged Little Pill will sweep
Congratulations to the Tony awards winners!
Karen Olivo’s Anita was absolutely amazing
Bravo Billy!!!!
Big, fat, tears of happiness, the only way I can celebrate Dame Angela, whom I admire and adore since she scared me (and Mummy) to death in "The Manchurian Candidate". Mummy was a devoted fan, and watching Angela gave her comfort and much, much pleasure during her illness! Happy to see the respect and affection laid at her feet by her peers!!! Thank you 😇🤗🎭
Really a spectacular Show from start to finish! I love Broadway - GOD! What COVID has done to it!
Brava Billy!
Scott Denny. Because I love Jane Fonda! The great embrace.
6:14 one of my favorite musicals
Sebastian Katigbak
Sebastian Katigbak
That’s right, it’s my favorite musical too, ever since it won for best costume design in a musical.
OBB-SESSSSSED with Raúl during that opening number.
Excuse me?! You’re obviously great on TV but you were Mark in RENT ‘97-8 and Broadway original cast for Assassins. That’s more than enough to qualify
technically the production of assassins he was in was a revival,
Do you have the complete 2004 broadcast?
I do. I have complete telecasts for every year it has been televised! However, the years 1984-2004 are all on video so I have to convert to digital. It's a pending project but my partner is hoping to work on our RUclips channel in the coming months, so stay tuned. I have a LOT of theatre related videos...much that has not surfaced here yet. Message me privately and I will see what I can do to get that 2004 done sooner
The show where Bret Michaels got seriously injured by a setpiece, after his performance with the cast of "Rock of Ages" (love that movie!) It also led to his brain hemorrhage that nearly killed him a year later, as well as a lawsuit between the Tony Awards and CBS
Completely!][
the world loves angela...... billy elliott forever!.....oy: rok of ages.... but yay Hair !!!....aaron T : yes !.....r. esparza : the best.... harvey ?.....will swenson l!!!!....oh......kristen.....JERSEY BOYS FOREVER
Halle Foote guest starred on Murder She Wrote several times. Interesting she and Angela were nominated in the same category.
When did they present Best Book of a Musical?
how did you know it used to be called the Antoinette Perry Awards? does it say that in the history of it somewhere?
That is the name of the award. “Tony “was her nickname. Tony Randall would joke that it was named after him.
1:34:58 Billy Elliott Performance
Il Go To Eurovision Song Contest Instead (Raymond Ur Such A Genius)
The audio is so muffled
I came here just to see Trent in Billy Elliot.
so how many tech guys got fired after this.
I'm really upset that Shrek the musical only got one Tony that night.
I think in any other year, Sutton would have won, but Alice Ripley was just a force of nature in Next to Normal; no way she wasn’t getting that Tony!
The technical staff for audio/sound should be shot! They all were asleep at the switch. All those talented actors put in jeopardy by these technical sound technicians who royally screwed up! The sound out of sync, the scratching audio, and sporadic sound quality was sorely missed.
Can someone explain me the sushi jokes at 1:18:53? Thanks.
silvia grassi I am pretty sure that was the year Jeremy Piven dropped out of David Mamet's "Speed-the-Plow" with the explanation of mercury poisoning from too much sushi. www.playbill.com/news/article/jeremy-piven-abruptly-departs-broadways-speed-the-plow-butz-steps-in-156226
Danielle Belisle Thanks for your reply. Now I understand,
i cant find 2010 complete :(
Well God Bless MissPoochSmooch - it looks like she has beaten me to the punch and gotten most if not all of those recent 30 years of Tony telecasts up here...amazing. My computer has had so many issues and problems I have yet to get my VHS and DVDs converted to digital. Looks like 2010 is here ruclips.net/video/d5YUhlHRF7o/видео.html
whens the jersey boys???
Jersey Boys was in 2006
How about Hamilton
It's kind of unfortunate that they only nominated title of show for best book and it didn't even win
Messy messy.messy!
