This is like the Tonys “we can’t pronounce names right and we’ve given the wrong Oscar to someone” moment. Everyone was good, but like if it could go wrong, it did. Also Aaron and Stockard saved this train wreck.
I remember being small and watching this with my dad (he works as a stagehand on Broadway), and he cringed at the opening notes, turned to my mom and said "well shit, someone's definitely getting fired for that" and proceeded to explain to me each time something happened that should have already been weeded out during the Dress Rehearsal. I still think it's the best Tony Opening of the 2000's.
This a tough Tony year to beat! It was far from perfect, but it was *memorable* and they ended the Broadway season with a bang. That's what's important.
the diversity of these shows is so amazing. i am a Billy Elliot and Next to Normal fanatic but have to say that Billy Elliot really is the greatest show I have ever seen. the kids are absolutely amazing and deserve all the credit they can get. also as a fan of the movie, this is one of the best adaptations i have ever seen. it is the same director and choreographer so the heart and soul of the movie is definitely present on the stage.
i missed it last night, thanks for sharing. It looks like a great night for Broadway. Love Stockard Channing and Billy Elliott looks like a good show to go see. Fun to watch.
@tennisace90 yeah, but they got a whole number in the middle of the show. I think the problem with trying to get them into the opening is that next to normal's music and numbers are so specific to the show that its hard to integrate them or even have them flow well with other numbers.
there was a lot of shows that were not nominated. and 9 to 5 did get snubed watch really sucks. dolly should have gotten at least one award for a great show. we say it in LA and will go too NY this summer to see it
Well, this one came in better than others. I seem to be having major problemst getting through a video with those little circles spinning around and I wanted to see the end, HAIR, so much, as I am in Italy and missed the show! Good opening, though, given the problems.
This performance seemed well prepared. The mic problems where not the fault of the performers. However they should have given N2N a bigger slot. It was the only groundbreaking non revival there.
Does anyone else think of that tumblr post that’s like “you’re at an mcr concert and suddenly panic at the disco comes out and sings this is gospel and then fall out boy too and then Dan and Phil come on stage with a pride flag”
I haven't seen 9 to 5, but I read a review in the British Magazine "Musical Stages" that pretty much panned it. I can't comment, I haven't seen it, but what I've seen from MH, SJB and AJ is that they're very talented. What's it about? Is it good?
@Lion187 yeah, she was either about to or had just done a rendition of Twelfth Night on Broadway (Broadway/Shakespeare in the Park?) and she's also a pretty big star so the more people they can get is publicity :)
This is the messiest Tony opening number to date and gosh darn do I love it so much.
same
we need more messy opennngs!
Live theater always surprises! @@Thatgayguytimo
Why can't every Tony Awards opening be like this? Those mash-ups with West Side Story/Guys and Dolls and Pal Joey/Next to Normal were really epic!
i love how you can hear someone warming up during the west side guys and dolls section.
What I love even more is that it somehow seems to fit perfectly!
That was Liza Minnelli
This is like the Tonys “we can’t pronounce names right and we’ve given the wrong Oscar to someone” moment. Everyone was good, but like if it could go wrong, it did. Also Aaron and Stockard saved this train wreck.
It was still better than the Oscars.
best opening ever, i love when something is great. i love it even more when everything goes wrong
This Tony's was the first time I'd heard of Aaron Tveit, glad he is still amazing 9 years later.

Despite the major sound issues, the 2009 Tonys will always be my favorite year. What an opening number!
Okay what shows do we want to be featured in the Tony opening number this year?
The Producers:yes.
The public knows its treasures: Biggest ovations for Dolly Parton, "9 to 5" and Liza Minnelli.
I love the Les Mis parody that Shrek the Musical did with the flag in the back(it's also one of my fav broadway shows)
HOLY CRAP AARON TVEIT LOVE HIM SO MUCH
I like to think that the actress doing their vocal warm ups are part of the performance:)
Some of the best perfomances that year with some of the worst sound!
This a tough Tony year to beat!
It was far from perfect, but it was *memorable* and they ended the Broadway season with a bang. That's what's important.
Holy shit!! What a year for Broadway!
We just closed 9 to 5 at my school .. That was so much fun
Best. Tony. Opening. Ever.
I love how it is a huge group for Shrek then right after is tiny little 5 foot 2 Dolly Parton. She is my idol i love her.
Tonight/Luck be a Lady Tonight was amazing! If only the sound had been beter!
This is probably the best opening ever.
west side story is quite possibly the best musical every written, written in the 50's and still gives me goosebumps!

Dolly Parton is the love of my life
This opening performance walked so the 2013 opening could run.
Ithaca College is well represented here with Matt and Aaron.
Good for Liza!! She's amazing :)
guys and dolls and West side story gave me goose bumps!
I love me some Stockard Channing. You go girl.
Aaron killed Stockard Channing! haha
who the heck is warming up with their mic on during the "West Side Story" section? The sound is always awful at the Tony's it seems...
Sorry for being late, but It sounds like Sutton foster
@@paulitamartinez4255 idk if this was intentional but this comment was hilarious 😂
At 0:26 on the left is young David Alvarez -- Bernardo in the upcoming West Side Story movie.
i missed it last night, thanks for sharing.
It looks like a great night for Broadway.
Love Stockard Channing and Billy Elliott looks like a good show to go see. Fun to watch.
Along side the opening number in 2012 this is the best! one.
This is the best Tony Awards opening number ever! Everybody shows so much love for each other!

After the Bartlett Administration, the First lady and CJ Gregg decided to try their hand on Broadway.
Underrated comment 💯💯💯
AARON TVEIT. LOVE LOVE LOVE.
there was a lot of shows that were not nominated. and 9 to 5 did get snubed watch really sucks. dolly should have gotten at least one award for a great show. we say it in LA and will go too NY this summer to see it
the audience goes NUTS as soon as Aaron Tveit comes on!!!
I love Hair...So much.
baby david alvarez followed by west side story… it was an omen!
Lizaaaaaa!!! she won a Tony this year!
Dolly! 😍
It sounds like someone might have left their mic on while backstage because I hear coughing and what sounds like vocal warm ups.
Leave it to Liza for always being the backbone when sh*t goes wrong.
Billy Elliot, West Side Story (Revival), Guys and Dolls, Rock of Ages, Pal Joey, Next to Normal, Shrek the Musical, 9 to 5, then Liza Minelli :)
Well, this one came in better than others. I seem to be having major problemst getting through a video with those little circles spinning around and I wanted to see the end, HAIR, so much, as I am in Italy and missed the show! Good opening, though, given the problems.
west side story cast are GREAT !!!!
Stockard Channing!!! She looks great!!
So many men... What more to expect from the Tony awards...
the mics were messed up! You could here people on stage when other people were performing
besides the technical problems, this opening was amazing! the entire show was amazing! this year's sucked.
TOS closed to early! it wasnt popular enough - only 30% occupancy towards its final days
oh the 2009 tony awards... the year when the people doing the sound and microphones were clearly so high they couldnt do their job properly.
@SchwalbyW They did a lot of show references throughout Shrek, including Les Mis
This performance seemed well prepared. The mic problems where not the fault of the performers. However they should have given N2N a bigger slot. It was the only groundbreaking non revival there.
Go Liza!
Wow, I like the Spanish in West Side Story, I've never seen that done before :)
Okay despite this being a hot mess, I kinda love it?
Does anyone else think of that tumblr post that’s like “you’re at an mcr concert and suddenly panic at the disco comes out and sings this is gospel and then fall out boy too and then Dan and Phil come on stage with a pride flag”

What's it about? Is it good?
Exactly my thoughts. I think BE only won because of Elton, really. N2N deserved Best Musical.
What a great year for broadway
Brett Michael's got knocked out by Stockard Channing!! HA ha!!
Very enjoyable, thank you!
Ha Liza came after SJB, funny bc Steph played Liza in BFO
Nobody does it better than Liza!
@Lion187 yeah, she was either about to or had just done a rendition of Twelfth Night on Broadway (Broadway/Shakespeare in the Park?) and she's also a pretty big star so the more people they can get is publicity :)
STOCKARD CHANNING!!!!! you beast!!!
completely agree
This was such an amazing opening number, and so many people are probably only going to remember it because of Bret Michael's lawsuit. Makes me sad.
It's impossible to compete against donkey ears and hydraulic noses.
Which one of the boys was on the flying thing in the Billy Elliot performance???????? Was it david I couldn't see very well?
@allshallknow19 yet it was still amazingly awesome.
@ABookwormAndProud Minus the people you can hear warming up off stage of course!
If anyone wants another weird/crazy opening award show number I suggest looking up the 1989 Oscar's 😂 if involves Snow White & Rob Lowe.
one hell of a opening number eh?
can sme1 tell me what these musicals are i know the first one billy ellliott
Dolly Parton was robbed, she should have won the Tony, and so should have Alison Janney.
You're not alone. Certainly, not nowadays, anyways. Her voice has suffered a huge change. She's not what she used to be.
wow bret michaels gets the smack down...broadway dont want him
WHY DOES THE END ALWAYS CUT OFF!?!?
ITS THE BEST PART
im pissed
@twilightrox2468 Thats mainly because someone gets hit by the set right behind him, listen carefully for the laughing :)
hey made a shrek musical? why?
its actually pretty good
Probably the best musical ive seen on stage, no word of a lie!
4:50 Bret Michaels’ accident
LIZA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
omg you said it! so pissed lol
What horrible sound problems! you can hear people's mics on backstage while other people are performing.
is it wrong that besides hair, shrek was my favorite out of this opening sequence?
and omg lol liza LOL
Creeper Aaron.
@jrsoccer11 im pretty sure it was trent
or technical problems...
I have to agree MstanikaLee
yessss :)
i really enjoyed aaron tivet in next to normal, IM SEEING NEXT MONTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, but with kyle dean massey
when? Because aaron comes back in september.
@allshallknow19 That's showbiz for ya.
Stockard Channing *and* Allison Janney? We need a West Wing musical 😂
Who was hosting this year?
Neil Patrick Harris
who is the person who sung 'electricity'?
Youngsun Kim was this a joke?
