This is really one of the best award shows I've ever seen! It's also incredibly fast-paced! The musical tributes are amazing and dig deep into the songs of Kander and Ebb, Sondheim, and Jerry Herman. The performances are amazing!
Wow is Dame Julie Andrews for real...how can someone look so beautiful.. just amazing and i loved her rendition of "Send In the clowns"... It is high time the Tony's honour with a Lifetime Achievement Award to the legend of Broadway #PollyBrown #ElizaDolittle #Guinviere #VictorVictoria 🙌.
Julie Andrews showed us what a confident, talented singer she is. "Send in the Clowns" is a simple melody. Too many singers "over sing" it. She didn't.
I agree. The 1970s thru 1990s were also good. The production's and telecast were superior and more talented than the other awards show. Nowadays the Tony awards are commercial and crass like all the others. I stopped watching it myself.
I think any other year Sunday in the Park with George would have swept the awards. It was unfortunate that it was up against the marvellous La Cage aux Folles. Two great scores by two giants of the musical theatre.
I don't think that even mattered. Sunday in the Park with George should have won Best Musical regardless of the competition. In my opinion, it was robbed.
One of the best productions of the Tony show among all those in the 1980's, but do yourself a favor: Skip to 57:45 and watch the great Dorothy Loudon give the quintessential two minute course in how to perform musical comedy.
I remember watching this live and thinking Herman was rude to Sondheim in his acceptance speech. But nowadays, I understand Herman's perspective a bit more. He's referring to not just Sondheim, but to the many composers of the 1970s who found success while Herman became "old hat". Andrew Lloyd Webber, Stephen Schwartz, and other composers of the rock opera era were enjoying critical/popular success and Herman, who had been the toast of Broadway a mere 10 years earlier, found himself regarded as a dinosaur. The success of "La Cage" must have been exhilarating and life-affirming to him, and therefore his self-congratulatory speech. And Herman was right about the beauty of his score: as much as I love Sondheim and the "Sunday" OBC recording, it's "La Cage" that has more plays on my iPod.
La Cage is a horribly offensive musical about pretending to be something you're not to please others, with a feeble to attempt to make the whole thing palatable by throwing in I Am What I Am. I absolutely hated the idea and execution of this musical then and I still do. Sunday was transcendant art by artists in full flight. La Cage was ... popular.
@@Kiltdon If _that's_ what you got out of La Cage, then idk what to say. Yes, that's the _conflict_ of the show, but it's poised as something that is ultimately wrong to do. It's a happy ending about pushing past the bs of the people around you to unapologetically be your own person. I agree that Sunday is the more important of the two shows, but I like them both!
@@tomshea8382 I think it is more like a PhD dissertation when it is done well. I saw it the first time it came to San Francisco. The cast was brilliant! I think that American theater goers do not give farces the respect that they deserve. "Death is easy. Comedy is hard."
Hola...Excelente vídeo y muchas gracias y muchas felicidades por presentar este momento musical,de premiacion a,lo mejor del Espectáculo Mundial/Broadwey..Y a la espectacular por siempre.. Liza Minnelli.
I mean, La Cage is such an amazing musical, and extremely relevant at that specific time, but even still now. Sunday is amazing, but just came across a juggernaut that night.
I though I was looking at a Jogging musical when I always hovered over the 1984 Tony Awards but it's actually the tap dance kid nice to get some context man a few days after this show Meredith Wilson would be dead No disrespect for Hirschfeld but those look so creepy man I hate when a composer bites it we can never get a new one of their stuff again unless someone went through their trash oh wow a young Christine Baranski Baby was quite exciting but how would would this work in this day and age as of this posting Merrily We Roll Along is getting a revival
1984 was much like 1991 where you had incredible scores (Sunday in the Park with George in 84 and Miss Saigon in 91) which were overlooked because other shows (La Cage and Will Rogers Follies) had messages which were more timely. In 1984, the gay community was front and center because the AIDS crisis was in critical mode, and in 1991, we had just won the Gulf War and patriotism was very high. I don’t think it was about competition. I think it was the climate of our culture which caused losses for Sunday in the Park and Miss Saigon. Also, Jerry Herman was quite rude in his acceptance speech for best score. It was clear he was taking a shot at Sondheim. Sondheim went on to debut 5 more Broadway shows following this night and won Tonys for 2 of those shows. Herman never wrote a show again. As of writing this, both men are in their late 80’s and have less than a year of age between them. Sondheim has 8 Tonys and Herman has 6.
@@jandreidrn All he did in that clip you shared was attempt to walk back what he clearly states at 33:08 in this broadcast of the 1984 Tonys. If you don’t think he was taking a shot at SITPWG and Sondheim here, you are extremely gullible. It’s nice that he tried to white wash this comment many, many, many years later, but the fact still stands that he said it, and La Cage was his last original work on Broadway while Sondheim continued to thrive.
@@marcuspd7502 you can see Jerry Herman clapping enthusiastically after the performance of SITPWG... now I don't know about you but I would have thought if Jerry were clearly making shots at Sondheim at that time, he would have shown his distaste of his musical instead of showing positive support, no?

Sunday in the Park was WAAAY ahead of its time! It could be staged exactly as is in any time period and be completely fresh and innovative.
No mistaking the brilliance of Al Hirschfeld's iconic penmanship on his caricatures.

She deserves at least one Tony Award… One of the most deserved in fact😢…
George Hearn was always a bridesmaid until tonight. You can tell the audience really wanted him to win
I saw George Hearn in Sweeney Todd and he was AMAZING!!! I actually wept for Sweeney at the end he made me feel so sorry for him.
First Tonys ceremony I remember seeing. was so blown away by SITPWG.
New York Theater in the 1980s, paradise!
God bless Jerry !

A fine night was had by all.
All except the producers of Sunday in the Park With George.

I read that the AIDS crisis had an impact on the La Cage phenomenon.
Saw them. both , amazing each in its own way.

Bernadette Peters was also robbed. Her performance was ridiculously amazing
I think that the problem is that it looks like she was born to perform Sondheim. Her performance as the Witch in "Into the Woods" was spectacular.

Mike Nichols was so versatile directing films and the theater. Will we see another like him.
so far we have Martin Mcdonagh, Rob Marshall, Sam Mendes, Julie Taymor

Julie Andrews is a goddess
Also, I wonder how many kids would be shocked to learn that Blind Al is also a broadway star😂
Thanks so much for posting this. 1984 as well as 1979 maybe my two favorite Tony years.
I bet Dorothy Loudon would have made a great “ Mama Rose”.
The Tony Awards put the Academy Awards to shame. These shows are excellent entertaining quality.
Thank you for posting this. It has brought back memories of people I loved whom I went to the theatre with some thirty years ago.
I always feel sorry for the shows that were the "other nominees." "Noises Off," is a charming play.

My favorite Sondheim musical is Evening Primrose which is lesser than his well known works. The music, songs, and premise of the story are brilliant.
Julie Andrews
Nancy Dussault was the only performer here to sung for all three tributes.
What a great voice Leslie Uggums has!!
Come on Alfonso Ribeiro!! The Tap Dance Kid!!!! Had no idea he was a Broadway baby!
