INCREASING SPEED IN THE GOLF SWING | Paddy's Golf Tip #13 | Padraig Harrington.

  • One of my favorite topics to discuss is speed in the golf swing. Increasing speed in the swing requires a player to focus on specific areas including: length of backswing, the wrists and arms, body mechanics and footwork.

This is some of the best advice on RUclips. Listen to a guy who knows what he is talking about. He has done it. My personal experience matches exactly what he is saying, most of the speed comes from the arms and wrists. So many people try to get speed from the body and turn it is such bad advice. Thanks Paddy. Your passion shows through in your videos. Hope to see a lot more from you.

Padraig, I've leant more from your lessons here on you tube than any of the youtube pros for the last 12 years. These are awesome tips and a lot of them are either opposite or very different from the other "stuff". Ill be getting a swing speed monitor asap, and trying different swings for sure. Thanks Padraig and good luck with the Ryder cup.

only having 56k subscribers is criminal, the information he provides is immensely beneficial. I’ve been taking lessons for about 1.5 years and then information he gives is worth 10x what those lessons cost. The jump drills have been a game changer, better contact, tight ball flight and easier on the back. Thank you for taking time to do this, hard to not root for Paddy going forward!

Must admit I tried moving my hips faster for years after a lesson but lost control of my ball and really never gained any yardage! Now I only think of throwing my “arms” down like Padraig said and it’s straight and long and feels effortless! I practice your tip on the range of throwing a ball and jumping looks odd but when they see you hitting the driver suddenly they all try it! These tips you are putting out there are awesome, never more relevant then this one about gaining speed! Thanks for the insight and years of experience and hard work!

I actually gained speed to 110mph by shortening my backswing similar to John ram. I found it easier to get the in to out path doing that too. I can John Daley it properly with my flex but end up in huge slices as I steepen the club.

Telling people to "rotate your hips faster" is usually horrible advice. Because this will often lead to them either sliding the hips or turn the hips it in a disconnected way. And as Paddy explain, turning your hips is pointless if you lose all the stretch.
The better advice is to focus on how the legs works especially the left leg/knee. Because if you work your legs correctly, then the hips will also fire correctly as a result. So the point is, don't focus on your hips. Focus on your legs and understand how you can use your big leg muscles to create speed. These muscles are by far the strongest your body has. A great example of someone who uses his legs correctly is Jon Rahm. He doesn't have a long backswing but he still hit the ball miles. And he does it by using his big leg muscles.

I really would like to know your swing thoughts. .with iron, wedges, and driver. Like what things do you think about/focus one. What is the golf swing to you? What does the golf swing feel like to you? And, something most important to me for the last several months is.. How do you get your right elbow/arm in position at impact? With the right elbow being somewhat in front of the right pocket, and your elbow crease facing forward. Like, do you feel like the right arm is moving just up and then down led by the elbow? Or, is it more of downwards and forwards like you were skipping a rock?

I am back again to say Thank YOU Thank YOU Thank YOU AGAIN 👍.
"body separation " has never done anything for me in term of adding speed and distance. Never learn to use the core to power the swing.
Now with hip leading the swing while staying connected to body change alot of things for me - feeling of the core firing and need to maintain that stretch in the leading side during the swing. Definitely added distance, striking sounded much more solid. I dont know how much more distance since balls were flying left and right with a huge curve but 2 days on the range showing balls landed and rolled to corners i have never reached before.
many possitive things i feel but not sure how to word them.
will follow up when i figured out how to fly the ball a bit straighter.
Lord Harrington of the swing, Thank YOU sir.

13:36 - Paddy absolutely nailed it here. Moving the hip/pelvis completely independent from the torso is guaranteed to lose speed. Once that stretch is lost it's over. Having excellent X-Factor is very important, the stretch created near change of direction must be maintained at least for a while with everything still connected. The move toward the target in the backswing, and the subsequent change of direction, will create an X-Factor stretch, which in turn creates lag both in the wrists and club shaft! 14:08 - The Sammy Snead hip/pelvis move, everyone should learn it!

This makes a whole lot of sense now after my last lesson. I was under the impression that when my coach was telling me to make a faster turn he meant fire my hips faster, which was always a loss of speed for me. He corrected me by getting me to feel that stretch and then turn my shoulders faster, which instantly added a whole lot of distance without too much more effort, actually less effort. I like your explanation better though, so thanks!

I’ll be 64 in December. I played golf in my 20’s and 30’s, not very well. Basically, if I broke 100 I treated myself to a beverage of my choice. My youngest son started playing golf back in March and asked me to join him. My first time out at the range I beat the hell out of my body. I’ve given myself a year to find my swing. I’ve went through, probably ever rabbit hole on RUclips, and there are a lot of good instructors out there. I bought a course. None of them really gave me the, ah ha moments, I’ve been looking for, until now. Prior to stumbling upon Mr. Harrington, I was hitting my driver ~200 yards. After your no nonsense, layman terms videos I’m hitting my driver ~286. I’m blessed, as far as golf is concerned to have stumbled across your instructions. Thank you so much for doing these. Comparing your instruction, Paddy, to Martin Chuck's in person lessons is like comparing a four star, Michelin rated restaurant to a hot dog stand. That said, Chuck did a good job selling & designing his "Tour Striker" golf clubs. His golf school was pretty useless, but he also sells that aid which helps guys like me regulate their swing plane. So, as bad an instructor as he is, he's a good training aid designer & salesman. So, chartered accountant/golf pro, design a useful golf training tool & sell it. Your ideas should be as good as Chuck's or Nowiki's because you've won on the PGA Tour, whereas they flopped. If your golf aid is as good as Nowiki's "Impact Snap", or Martin Chuck's "Tour Striker" 5, 7, 8, & wedge clubs, you might make as much money as they do with their golf gizmos. Plus, your web sites would get a lot more hits.

Wow! Such humility and passion along with wisdom equals to perfect teacher. This is the way you perfect your trade and skill, it's by work ethic and perseverance. It's not how much you work, it's what you know what you need to correct and move forward.

To be one of the best in the world I can’t imagine. Yet I feel like I’m having a good conversation with a friend. Neat!

@Padraig - Can you do a video explaining how the hips (center of body) actually move towards the target during the backswing? I notice you do it, as most pros do, but amateurs usually move too late towards the target, in the downswing.

I can't thank you enough Mr Harrington I really really appreciated for making the videos. I does worked by practicing more and actually playing. I wished I have seen your channel years ago I was contemplating of giving up this game due to not improving my game. You've giving me hope again.
