Proper fishing, proper river and not a puddle pig in sight 👍 terrific sense of achievement catching wild fish from a wild river. Nice to see you doing it in the traditional manner, single rod fished property still outfishes two fished lazily under the right conditions. Well done 👏
John, you are a complete joy to watch and give me, and im sure many other fishermen the feeling to get back out to the shed get the gear dusted off and into the boot. Thank you for such good entertainment!
I’m not sure what I like the most, this lovely comment or your username 😂 Brilliant 🤩 Thanks so much for the kind words and if there’s ‘gear to be found in the shed’ then I’m all in! Cheers 🍻
Hi John My 2 favourite places on the trent. Winthorpe and Cromwell. I've spent many pleasure days and happy club matches fishing there. I used to find raw stewing meat, small finger nail size, found the big chub and barbel. Thanks for finding the time to make this video. Peter.
I’ve heard lots of stories about stewing meat being good for chub on the Trent! Yet to try it for some reason. I heard you could feed little nuggets of mince with it. Will have to give it a go one day… 🤔 I also have fond memories of Winthorpe but haven’t had chance to fish it in ages. Look out for another - and rather special - Collingham video next Friday! 🐟🐟🐟
@themagicoffishing Buy the cheapest beef stewing steak/meat, don't wash any of the blood out. Cut into small triangular pieces and hook in the point. Size 18 to 14. Also buy some mince beef and rub in flour so you can loose feed just like maggots. Otherwise it just sticks together and doesn't break up in the water. I even use it on my local canal it's really great chub bait. I've even had barbel on it. Give it a try and let me know how you get on. I look forward to your next video, please keep'um coming. Peter
Wow, thanks, Jim, that seriously means a lot. I LOVE this sport of ours so to be regarded a credit to it is music to my ears. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment and keep ‘em coming. Cheers 🍻
I've said this before but nowadays I'm not a true coarse angler, I levitated towards Salmon, Seatrout and game in my late teens however the nostalgia that comes through in your videos, references to your youth, your happy past and childhood reminds me of my own. I too owe so much to my grandfather who taught me to Salmon fish aged 8 and my dad who took me roach fishing on local pits at aged 5. I love your approach to fishing and respect for both the present and the past.
Once a coarse angler, always a coarse angler 😉🎣🐟 Roach fishing was a foundation of my childhood angling too. I STILL want a 2lb+ roach, which would reduce me to jelly 😄 1lb 14oz has been a long standing PB since my teens?! Sounds like you have had some brilliant game fishing experience, too, which I’m pretty shallow on. Here’s to appreciating our forefathers and thanks for a lovely comment 🍻
Thanks for the reply John, we share a similar background. I was probably the most lucky Roach angler, as a child after id started game fishing myself and a primary school friend fished our local park pond in Preston (Moor Park) aged 9 or 10 we would fish for sticklebacks with an old glass fibre rod and line tied to end eye. In the pond there were (as we thought) just stickle backs and odd tiny perch. Over two days in summer holidays I hooked and caught a roach we estimated at 1lb 12oz, no one believed us. Next day I hooked and even bigger roach which my school friend tried to land but got hiis shorts stuck on the railings. That day a 'proper' angler was fishing and came running over with the net, he netted and weighed it for me 2lb 8oz on an 8 foot fibre glass spinning rod with 5lb line tied to end eye with a 2lb hook link. I've never seen a roach like it since.
Absolutely brilliant! Well deserved. Like your positivity when faced with difficult fishing conditions. Great to bring that rod out and have a session like that. Looked alot of fun! You have a sub from me!
THANK YOU! 🙏 Hope you enjoy some of the other vids on here, especially the other Trent ones. Indeed, another Trent session - and a real red letter day - due next Friday at midday 🎣🐟 Welcome to comment anytime 👍
Wow you’ve nailed it again John. Cracking fish and great video dubbing & editing. Love how you put in the shots of the flora & fauna to give a real feel for the beat & being at one with nature. You deserved those fin perfect fish. Thanks for sharing with us. A great watch after a difficult week at work.
Ah man, I know only too well the strains of a difficult week at work, so I am well chuffed to have provided a nice distraction at the end 👍😊 Hope you have a more chilled weekend and look out for more angling action this time next week 🎣🐟🍻
Hi John, you certainly nailed it buddy. I admire your perseverance, that weather was not nice. A couple of those torpedoes nearly pulled your arm out of the socket didnt they, especially in that tidal flow. I love the way you reminisce from your youth, you must have had a fabulous childhood, I know from past videos how fondly you speak of your grandad. Hope you had even more success when you returned the following morning and look forward to watching your next edition. Keep up the good work, and tight lines. 🎣👏
Thanks Graham! Such a lovely comment as always - they really are appreciated 💙🎣 Yes, I was lucky enough to have a special family growing up in Sheffield and my book is a celebration of my grandad in particular. He got me into this amazing sport of ours and set me on my way. It really was a fantastic session but I can promise you the following day - this Friday’s video - was one I’ll never forget! Cheers for now 🍻
To drawer fishing on the Trent. I had the original fibre glass Porky Pig. Super rod until I snapped the quivertip whilst fishing at Teddington. The magic spell was broken even with a replacement tip fitted. Your videos are superb and are prompting so many memories for me. Stay safe and thanks
Thanks David 💙 And you owned an ORIGINAL PP - amazing 🤩 I can’t imagine the pain of losing the tip 😱 It seems so strange in this day and age when most new tip rods come with a few options or spares, but they were precious things back then!
What a days fishing John. Never stopped smiling whilst watching this. You are one of the few males of the species, that have had the hairs on the back of my neck tingling !! Love Collingham, miles better now that all those night time bivvy dwellers have gone!
It certainly was my friend 🤩🎣 And if can also make you smile while enjoying my fishing then it’s the cherry on top of a bloody nice cake ☺️ Glad you enjoy Collingham too and I agree the reality of the place is nothing like the stories of the last few years (when I’m sure there were problems at times). Please look out for another video next Friday. I can only say the fishing kept on getting better and better during my stay there…
Great to see you re-living your teenage years John on the mighty Trent, misspent youth, not a bit of it!!. When you said porky pig I thought you were going to use pork scratchings for bait ha ha, you never know might be worth a go. Those 4lb barbel fight like double figure fish, I reckon the sea water toughens them up!!. My goodness if you get a really big one, that will be a fight to see, hope you do, what a great place-well worth the travel time and effort. Looking forward to next instalment, cheers Peter.
Mmmmmmm, pork scratchings… 😋🍺 Thank you as always, Peter! The ‘smaller’ fish really are rockets as you say 🚀🐟 Stay tuned next week for some a little bigger… 🤩
Excellent stamp of fish for the ticket price, well worth it. Flippin' crabs getting everywhere, always look odd coming out of a coarse river. Looking forward to next week for next part. Cheers. 🧔 👍
Thanks ☺️ I must say I’m still to manage a Thames barbel, although I’ve only had a couple of serious attempts so far. Like everywhere, conditions count for a lot and any venue can seem easy if you land at the right time, but there are certainly a LOT of barbel at Collingham!
Isn't it great when the target is well and truly achieved? Barbel aimed for and barbel banked. Nice one mate. I've never caught a barbel, and would love to do so. Not been fishing for nearly 5 years, and with things the way they are, I can't see that changing any time soon. So I rely on you to go for me, and share those adventures. For which I'm very thankful. One day perhaps.... You take care John. TTFN
Graham, you are so right as always - it’s brilliant when a fishing plan actually happens as planned and dreamt, or indeed even better! The Angling Times and few folks on YT can make it seem like it’s easy, but we all know it ain’t. Not unless you have access to the best waters in Britain on a regular basis. I can say something else, too… trying to do it for the ‘cameras’ (if you can call my phone and a couple of GoPros that) makes it even sweeter! Always glad to share my fishing with you 💙
Gorgeous looking Barbel bud, the gold and olive green is something else.. Can't believe your luck with the weather again. You did very well to film and fish in those conditions, Mitten Crab, rain, escaping Maggots, sounds like me on a good day..!😂 very well done Sir..👏 gonna be up your way in the next couple of weeks (weather depending) I haven't forgotten.🍻😊 5⭐ Vid again bud..👍
Great to see you truly enjoying the amazing Trent. Living in Nottingham I am totally spoilt by having this awesome river on my doorstep. There’s other great day ticket stretches containing huge fish including the A1 stretch at Newark which is holding the U.K. Barbel masters competition as we speak. Shame you cannot pop in to check it out. This year anyone could pay to fish it, big money prizes, but next year there will be 2 qualifiers on the same weekend to enter the big match. With your match fishing past it would be a good one to consider a flirtation with river match fishing again. Plus there’s always big tips to learn to take back to your local waters.
Thanks James! I’ve always had a soft spot for Nottingham. Used to enjoy fishing on the Embankment for starters. I’m aware of the A1 stretch and it was a contender for that long weekend I had booked off work. I will definitely keep it on my hit list 🎣 Thanks for taking the time to comment and look out for another Collingham special next Friday…
@@themagicoffishing I will do for sure, your enthusiasm for your angling shines through for fish big and small and is such a contrast to the huge number of those wanting to display their own egos rather than a love of the sport.
I can tell m8 you are brill on your vids are class, I fly fished for over 20 years and my mate I met on holiday took me night fishing for barbel ,ever since I experienced that moon lit clear night ,with owls, bats ,the noise of running water , and then a sudden violent 3ft twitch on my rod ,with about 30yrds of line gone before I even knew what was happening, to finally see at the time whate seemed like a river bronze whaler shark clone come up in water iv never looked back ,I'm obsessed about them ,and have dedicated all my fishing leisure time to them . Il never be the bivvy up for days with bite alarms and 10 kilos of boiley and pellets, the roving side of me would get bored , but these lads have got it right on the trent most of them ,strong gear ,land quick , nets that allow the fish to rest in the flow , and don't keep them out to long , iv studied the species they burn huge amounts of energy and oxygen and are literally knackered , but by doing all above they will all go back right 👍
Absolutely loved that story of your first one 🤩 I remember my first, vividly, too, although it was all small river fishing - and roving as you say - on my local Wey. It’s a tributary of the Thames and they go up to about mid teens in theory but a double is a biggie. My previous PB of just under 11 was caught from there a few years back but look out for my next vid to see that get broken… 😊 Not sure if you will have seen any, but there are a few small river barbel vids on the channel, too, like this one - ruclips.net/video/zVHMgqLix04/видео.htmlsi=ekBxztNuSCFrVar5
Absolutely brilliant video and I'm sure you'll enjoy the curry and a few well earned beers 🍻 ,always a pleasure to share your fantastic fishing adventures, I'm very envious, looking forward to the next edition, thanks again, tight lines 👍👏
Thank you so much 💙🎣 It’s comments like this that keep me going and make all the effort worthwhile - more than happy to share my mini adventures with fellow anglers like you. The next edition will also be a little bit special…
Thanks Andy and I know… ☺️ I really have had a lucky year just in terms of the places I’ve got to fish and some the fish I’ve then managed to catch from them. This channel has been a revelation in terms of making me think about where or how to fish next and try to bring a bit of variety, just as you do on the amazing BBF. The next one really is a bit special, too…! 🎣🐟
Wayyyy you made it down this year. Well done mate. Cant beat the Trent at collingham!! I did leave a message about Collingham after that Gunthorpe episode saying that I had average 4-5 barbel a trip this season up at collingham so I hope I helps to some extent make that decision to get over there this year. Well done again pal!!
Yes mate! Your advice wasn’t it?! Well, I think you were the first and most confident to suggest I needed to get myself there, for which I thank you! It’s a 3 hour drive from where I now live in Surrey but I stayed over and managed three days… The second day, which is this coming Friday’s vid, REALLY blew my mind 🤯🎣🐟🐟🐟🐟 SO glad you suggested it and I’m sure I’ll be back despite the long round trip. I got lucky with the conditions that week, but couldn’t believe how quiet it was (other than the weir field). So many fish, so many pegs, and all for a tenner on the bank 👍👍👍 It’s really you I’m talking about in this vid when I say I owe the trip to you folks at home! Although one or two others made similar comments at various points. Cheers again 🍻
Thanks as always man ☺️💙 I loved using that old rod and it will hopefully not remain in the corner of the garage anymore - especially if I make it back to the Trent anytime soon 🤞🎣🐟
Thanks mate! No; they are not easy and this was an exceptional day. I’ve only been targeting them on an off for around five years and although a good venue and the right conditions really help, I’ve had many much quieter or completely unsuccessful (at least in terms of catching) sessions before this one. And no doubt there will be plenty more quiet days to come! 😂 Cheers for now 🍻
Ahhhh, a local?! I loved it, thanks! Can’t wait to get back… 🤞🤞🤞 Look out for more amazing Collingham action next Friday (I fished there for three days and had some unbelievable results 🐟🐟🐟🐟). Cheers 🍻
Brilliant session, not seen a porky pig rod in forever, mint rods, the river is slowly going down after all the heavy rain, dropped afew feet, but was fishing farndon earlier, still needing 6oz ,even with a big bow of line, a third of the way out, and the leaves etc, great session you had there ,brilliant video, tight lines, good health and safe travels, cheers craig
My pleasure and thank you, Craig - really do appreciate your comments and I hope to deliver with another epic video filmed at Collingham next Friday… 🎣 I really did laugh on one of the days when I told the bailiff I had some 6oz leads and wondered if I should try a cast towards the middle, where barbel were regularly leaping like salmon! He chuckled and said I wouldn’t hold bottom with 10oz that day. Gotta love the Trent 😄👍
Wow👌 what a day. Nice one👏👌I'm going to have to get up there, and who knows. I could , fingers crossed 🤞 have a fab day like you had😀 I look forward to seeing your next video.
Thanks Pete! 😊💙 The next one really will be a bit special too - one of the best day’s angling I’ve ever enjoyed… Really appreciate you taking the time to comment - keep ‘em coming. Cheers for now 🍻
Great day out for you eh John, and such good looking, clean and healthy fish .you did well today mate, hope you have a nice day tomorrow, tite lines till next time mate cheers great video.
Thanks mate 💙😊 Your comments are always anticipated and welcome. Aye, it was a cracking day - and look out for next Friday’s vid and the following day (at Collingham) really was a bit special… 🎣🤩🐟
The other angler you showed at the start of the video is one of my oldest and closest mates . Big Gaz ! . So good to see him catch a few lovely specimens, he was a bloody good match angler in his day too . Great watch .
That’s made my night! If Gaz is a mate of yours then you must be a top bloke - one of the nicest, most helpful and upbeat anglers I’ve met in a while and he was ‘at one’ with the barbel (and loving every minute!) that day. Think he had a PB or two that evening and something like nine fish in total… In a short afternoon and evening session 🤩🤯 Thanks for taking the time to comment and I’m glad I could freak you out a bit with the inclusion of your mate ‘Big Gaz’ 😄🐟🎣👍
@@themagicoffishing You wouldn't meet a nicer bloke , spent a few cracking trips to the US with him in search of wild St. Lawrence river carp and grew up match fishing with him on our local river Nene. He's threatening to get back into match fishing next year and I really hope he doesn't because he'd soon find his feet and be bashing us up again 🤣. Anyway subbed for the channel and will keep an eye out for future content 👍 .
I won my first club match on the Trent using a Porky Pig feeder rod. Fond memories. It went from a one rod range to two, then three, and eventually to six. No longer in the Daiwa catalogue any more, I believe. Classic bit of kit back in the day.
Wow, so we both won our first match using the legendary rod?! I never paid attention as it evolved and became a six rod range (seeing as I was in my late teens and had bugger all cash). But another lad leaving a comment said the later range was a supreme rod! Can’t imagine them getting much better, but perhaps the butt sections were a touch thicker than modern / top of the range stuff. The through action is spot on for big fish 👌 Glad to have brought back some fond memories for you.
What an arm aching session, must give this stretch a go, its local but have been blinded by carp fishing for too long. Got a Terry Eustace fibreglass barbel quiver rod in the garage gathering cobwebs. Great watch as usual.👍
That sounds like a classic rod that needs airing too! Another Excalibur to relive the glory days. Tight lines if you do go and watch out for another Collingham vid next Friday.
What a cracking session John, well done mate. Yes, 3 barbel on a session here in Surrey would be a dream 😂. I may have to venture out and go back on some rivers in North Yorkshire again. Thoroughly enjoyed that 👍🏻
Wow, high praise indeed 💙 Your kind words AND custom are much appreciated ☺️ I sincerely hope you enjoy the book - let me know with a comment on another video sometime when chance 👍🎣🐟
Ahh dang it *laughs*.... There is me trying to reduce my rod collection and seeing how well the rod performed, i've just gone and bagged one myself and collecting today ! Another superb video John and can't wait to get out and bag myself some barbel again now ! Cheers Paul.
No way?! You’ve managed to bag one? Nice work! eBay or similar I presume? I’ve never had a look to be fair, but I’m mega glad the bailiff suggested it would be the perfect rod and reminded me I had one getting dusty in the corner of the garage 😅 I really hope to use it more again now - whenever I can get on a big river 🎣
@@themagicoffishing I managed to bag one from FB marketplace for a steal!! So heading there after work this afternoon to collect it. The ones on eBay are still asking big money so well happy :)
Well done pal really enjoyed the video. Porky Pig was a deffo iconic trent rod in the late eighties early nineties and was a beast of a rod casting block end feeders over the trent mainly for chub .My thoughts on the rod are mixed ,great for casting big weights and great for big lines and big hooks but for me a little to stiff when scaling down to lighter lines and smaller hooks.I had and still got 3 11/13 whisker kevlar feeder rods which were awesome for throwing a feeder to thefar bank of the mighty trent but were still soft enough to catch small and big fish on lighter lines and hooks.Obviously no good doing what you've just done but the extra heavy one would easily have handled with adequate heavy line and big hooks.Watching your vid really makes me want to get them old rods out again and go and try for a big barbel or two!! I have caught a few at Fiskerton 5/6 pounders 30 yr ago so they've got to be doubles now!Barbel have always been my fav fish ,I always used to call them the Mike Tyson of fish.Solid muscle just like he was.Having said all this I've just prepared today for an open tomorrow at springvale and first port of call is 5pints of maggots in the morning to catch a weight of silvers and hopefully some carp in latter stages.Am I getting fed up of commercial fishing....... maybe I am but at I suppose iknow I'm going to catch even now the weather is getting colder. One day I will have a go ,I still know most of the haunts on the trent but obviously not the noted barbel pegs.Look forward to next vid and maybe looking at another barbel bashing it just might tempt me!! Cheers.
Brilliant comment and thanks for the kind words, Albert 👍 I remember the whisker name well too! Daiwa was my go to rod maker in that sort of period, not that I had many at all back then! I also had a Tricast feeder rod for bream and a Silstar ‘winkle picker’ with a really fine glass tip. All before the advent of commercial fisheries of course! I think you might enjoy the next video on Friday too 🎣🐟🐟🐟 It was the second day at Collingham and let’s just say a few bigger fish showed up. I used two rods and heavier gear that day, but still hooked one or two I couldn’t do much with! Some mind blowing barbel fishing for a tenner when the conditions are right. Glad I might have inspired you to reach for some of the old rods too - it was a joy to catch on mine again. Give my regards to Springvale and I hope you sack up. The club matches I fished on there this summer were all won on maggot down the margins with a bit of Sensate flavouring.
@@themagicoffishing Fished it last week 83lb and thanks for coming ,next peg had a carp last 5 mins 13lb won section 95lb ! Also had another two over 10 lb Takes a lot of Ide to cancel those fish out.About 14 yr ago I went with a retired pal of mine to the tidal trent opposite the famous Dunham Dubbs upstream of Dunham Bridge. He had bean the day before and had a load of big proper slabs,he persuaded me to have a day off work and we went next day.We walked up the Bank at first light and as we got to the pegs we were going to fish big bream were topping just like they used to on the shannon at athlone.Cut a long story short at the end of session I had 49 bream some 7lb + and not many at 3lb .My mate filmed on one of those massive camcorders while I counted them out of my net ,I estimated 250lb ,a day I'll never forget.Im definitely going to give it a go as I've got loads of time on my hands being retired and I've just shut my caravan down for winter.Looking forward to your next vid John.cheers.
Yeah perfectly OK way things are now ,I just meant in hot dry weather m8, barbel give same effort what ever conditions ,but as you know they knacker themselves out , I fish heavier gear purely to get them in quicker especially in high summer , iv sat on trent and watched dead barbel drift past last couple years and undoubtedly through being caught and exhausted . I love your videos by way ,up there with TV series from over years 👍
Thanks so much for your kind words, mate 💙 And I can tell you care about the fish just as much as the fishing - an attitude I like to think I take too. I’m still relatively new to barbel fishing(maybe five years of a 45 year journey in angling) so always happy to receive the wisdom of others with a lot more experience 👍 I’ve got to say I had some of the fights of my life while at Collingham and it was my first real time with such magnificent fish from a big river with extra water. Loved every minute and the next video is another special one (in my mind at least!). Cheers for now.
Hi John, yet another very nice video. As I sit here in the warmth of my living room, it's nice to be on the bank with you. I admire your sitting on the bank in all weathers to make these videos. I just hope that when you're my age, (81), that you can sit in your living room watching similar videos filmed by someone else. By the way, do you have any children interested in fishing? Well done!
Many thanks John 💙 You need to read my book to understand my history with my kids and fishing 😄 The short answer is that I have one 17 year-old lad, plus three teenage step children (15-20), and I’ve had all of them fishing and catching to some degree but none of them have truly been hooked! A shame, but it seems you either fall head over heels in love with fishing or don’t quite ‘get it’ 😄
Hi John, this was the first of your films that I’ve seen but I’ll be watching more now that I’m subscribed. I’m off to Collingham for 3 days on Monday including a couple of days on the legendary peg 1a with a couple of mates. I can’t wait. I’ve had some great days on the Collingham AA ticket. I’m looking forward to the next drop - it sounds like it’s going to be a good one.
Welcome on board 🤗 I’m very jealous of your trip and KNOW you will have an amazing time 🎣🐟🐟🐟 There’s a reason those pegs are legendary - they apparently fish well during most conditions so unless it’s in full flood you should bag some barbel! Hope you enjoy many more vids on the channel (there are a few on the Trent for you to catch up on and there will be more Collingham capers next week…). Cheers for now and keep the comments coming 👍
Thank you very much 🎣🐟💙 It was a brilliant day. Although not as good as the following day, which is covered in a vid due out this Friday afternoon! Appreciate you taking the time to comment 👍😎
Thank you - my pleasure. I got lucky with the conditions that week (have you seen the other video on the channel called Unbelievable’? If not, that was the very next day to this video you’ve just watched and I caught even more and bigger fish! 🤯 The high pegs (80s) on the Conveyer Belt Field fish well - or so I’m told - when the river is low, with the other area and the low 40s pegs doing well when there’s a lot of water in. Tight lines 🎣
Many thanks, Clive! One week it’s the rads and the next it’s IT issues 🤯 Lovely sesh you had a Cobbetts recently though - me and my mate Andy just fished it this week and our biggest fish was a half pound roach. Couldn’t get the bream to feed - or a great stripey like you had. Cheers for now.
@@themagicoffishing Well thank you for your comments as always, yes it's a funny water, and not so easy to fish, but I love it, all the very best mate.
Will have look and keep up gd vids , barbel are species I don't mind if they 2lb or 18lb , just under 17lb my biggest ,but unless it's a truly huge fish I never weigh them , it's the night fishing and the runs that get me there's nothing like it , and people stop going when it's cold which is mistake ,just switch to smaller baits or naturals and pick your days , avoid sudden weather changes , iv had barbel in below freezing conditions , bites are softer , and don't fight as hard , also after a deluge the temp of river can go up couple degrees and for periods during day you can have consistent sport
Some great advice there, Andrew, some of which is good for me to think about too. Just under 17lb… 🤯 I may have LOST a fish that big - watch this Friday’s vid!! But yes, they are magnificent at any size and fight like tigers. I always give them a good rest in the net before showing them to the camera and then again before letting them go - sometimes getting a soaking. I love the different feel you get from catching them from big rivers like the Trent and then small rivers where you can’t quite believe there’s anything in there that powerful… before nearly having your rod pulled in. Amazing fish 👍
Small world! You’re already a favourite on the channel and now I know you’re from Dronfield! Many happy memories of that place and I still can’t believe that both DWSSC (where we used to get picked up by coaches and have prize giving nights) AND The Miners Arms opposite have both shut recently 🥲 I still call in at Angling Direct - which I still call Climax, after the tackle shop’s original name that it took from the nightclub building it took over - when I’m up to fish matches and see family.
Going to get you a t shirt printed " Trent Pest Control Officer" Great days fishing mate well done. Will see later but not sure if I Im fishing yet she still in a bad mood.
Brilliant 🤣 Watch for next week’s vid for a few bigger specimens… 🐟 Great to see you on the bank this morning too - let’s hope for a slabfest! And Andy’s already off the mark…
In that case, mate, you’ve caught one I can only imagine for now! What a beast. Great to hear of Muskham again - not fished there for years and years but I have some fond / vague memories. It’s such a massive river! And plenty of massive fish 🐟
Thanks Mark, appreciate you taking the time to comment 🤗💙 Did they carry on making them then?! Must have from what you’re saying. I’ll have to keep an eye out on eBay… Really was an iconic rod and I almost fell over when the bailiff says to me “what you really want, in an ideal world, is a Porky Pig”!
Thanks for saying so - mega appreciate viewers like you who are happy to leave a few kind words 👍 I was actually downstream of the conveyer belt, on peg 86. I got access to the river at the belt and then drove a couple of minutes along the top of the flood bank, past the small number of private pegs and then on to the 80s (handy parking just above each of the pegs). I’m glad you’ve also experienced the fantastic fishing on offer there 😎🎣🐟
Think this comment has come up twice - sometimes happens to me 🤷🏻 I replied to the other version in full but the short answer is no, still closed when I was there. But no probs to get to the river.
Worksop! I used to do a bit of work there 👍 When I worked for one of the early cable TV companies many years ago. I have no doubt your club book is better value overall. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 🙏🎣🐟
Hi first let me say that im enjoying your channel, and eagerly await your next video.Ive not long returned to angling after a long hiatus and am way out of touch with modern fishing terminology ! can you tell me why they are called halibut pellets? keep the videos coming thanks again.
That’s brilliant to hear, Phil. Both that you enjoy the channel but, more importantly, that you have recently returned to our great sport - welcome back 🤗🎣 Yep, a LOT has changed just in the time I’ve been fishing but I always say the fish haven’t changed a bit! New gear can be nice to use and I do believe that a finesse approach (or as light and balanced as you can get away with in any fishing situation) will catch you more, but they can still be caught with all the same gear, tactics and bait that everyone used to use decades or even centuries ago 👍🐟 Halibut pellets (much bigger than the micro or 3mm ones I was using) were originally designed and used to feed halibut, raised at sea in giant nets like salmon farming. They are generally much higher oil content than modern carp or coarse fishing pellets and can work well for barbel, bream and carp in the warmer months. But as you saw, they really wanted the casters that particular day.
Thanks for that John, anticipating tidal Trent "part 2" I used to fish the Trent a lot in the 60s and 70s in club matches and winter leagues plus odd open in those days it was mainly roach and gudgeon with odd dace and chub thrown in, i often think were these big fish in the river in those days? was it just that we used the wrong methods? it was mostly caster and stick down the edge in those far off times. Great warts an all videos.
What an absolutely magnificent days fishing. Thanks for sharing it with us John much appreciated. Think that venue should be on my bucket list for retirement now! Just a quick question ( apologies if I’ve missed this) I think you said you were using a 10lb leader…what would you recommend for your mainline please?
My pleasure. I don’t want to over promise or sound cocky, but also check out next Friday’s video as my second day at Collingham might just have been even better 🤯🐟 Yep, I was fishing a strong, abrasion resistant 10lb mainline, down to a leader of just under 10lb breaking strain (about 9.12 I think, or 0.21mm diameter). If you’re using a stronger rod or rods with big baits like pellets and boilies, or the river is really up and therefore potentially snaggy in the margins, where it’s come up over vegetation, I’d think nothing of going to 15lb line. Tight lines if you go and I hope you also get lucky with the conditions. They extra water as long as it’s not over the banks! Loads of good info on the Collingham Angling Association website about tackle and baits (link in the video description). Cheers 🍻
@@themagicoffishing Thank you John. You’re far too modest….I’d be shouting about a day like that! Roll on Friday. Not too dissimilar to what I use on the Yare in Norfolk. That can push sometimes. No Barbel but plenty of Bream and other silvers.
Superb vid that john, those fish looked immaculate and scrapped like hell, love these river films too much carp. Not fished collingham for years and only live fairly local got to get on there.Do you think it would fish through the winter ?.🐟🎣
I’m almost certain it fish through the winter - when it’s not flooded over the banks. I believe you’d just need even heavier gear and fish closer in the more high the levels get. Maybe bigger, smellier baits when it’s coloured too. Pegs 40-45 (parking behind pegs on the flood bank track) are good when it’s high - wait to see my video about that next Friday… 🐟🐟🐟
@@themagicoffishing Thanks John, will give it a try through the winter if the levels remain right. Do you drive through the village to get the access to the river ,can't remember now it's been years since I went.🎣
Ooooh, I’m yet to try the weir field! Would love to try one day. I gather it gets pretty busy up there, but I was quite happy catching well lower down to begin with 👍🎣🐟
Great fishing well done maybe put the porky pig to rest bud it's not up to battling barbel ,not so bad this time of year but in hot weather those barbel would be exhausted, always feel we should use strong gear for barbel as it's best to get them in and rested as quick as possible
Thanks. I feel it’s up to the job with anything but the real biggies though. Got a good 1lb+ TC When I asked the bailiff (who has fished the stretch for decades) whether I should bring the carp rods, the Avon rods, or what…? He replied ‘well, the ideal rod would be a Porky Pig’. I couldn’t believe it and explained I’d actually got one! But rest assured I used some even stronger rods for the next day’s fishing, which was eventual to say the least, and the vid for that one won’t be far behind. Cheers for now 🍻
Good shout, although I’ve never had the pleasure and that’s comparing a day ticket with a club membership of course. Maybe one day I’ll get to compare… 🤞🎣🐟
@@themagicoffishing Definitely worth a trip mate and only £40 for the year they got milage of banks on a fair few rivers but we mainly fish the middle Severn 👍 Great video TightLines 🎣
Wow what a great days fishing you’ve had, you deserve everything you get buddy, that weather looked awful. I had to have a lay down after watching that, it looked exhausting fighting against that current. Hope the following day was as productive for you and the weather was a little kinder too. Great work and great photography too, the river looks fabulous.
There is an alarming trend with the angling clubs who have the fishing rights on the Trent. Regardless of the fishing on these stretches, charging ten pounds is not good value. It's not good value for the dad who wants to spend an afternoon teaching his son river fishing. It's not good value for the leisure angler who wants to pick up a few roach. There is no disabled access, the club doesn't maintain the banks or provide safe, stable platforms. This trend is spreading and the clubs are exploiting anglers who have paid, through their licence fee, the stocking of the river. If it is such good value, why was he the only angler on this stretch? Clubs have taken over stretches where children play in the water or have picnics while Dad spends an hour or two fishing. Good value? Definitely not. Commercials stock their waters, maintain the banks, provide parking and safe, stable platforms to fish from. The elderly and disabled are provided for. At an average cost of 5 or six pounds, I call that good value. Charging ten pounds to fish anywhere on the Trent is a rip off and money for nothing.
I’m sorry you seemingly feel upset about an amazing (in my opinion) day’s fishing. I’ve filmed, edited and published this video for free - and shared it with RUclips using a title that’s meant to be a a bit of fun and a touch provocative. I have no doubt there’s plenty of better value fishing out there, but the point is that I had an incredibly enjoyable day (despite the rain!) and thought that spending £10 on a day ticket to catch some stunning, wild river fish, felt great value to me at the time. I can’t remember the last time I paid £5 for a commercial fishery, to be honest, which are more like £10+ (without discounts) these days. And the fish in those fisheries are anything but wild of course. However, I completely agree they can offer some brilliant value in many other ways - like security, convenience, disabled access and plenty of bites 👍 🎣🐟 😎 They have done wonders for fishing in the UK. Thanks for taking the time to leave your thoughts and I hope you continue to enjoy the value offered by the fisheries you choose to visit. Ultimately, enjoying our fishing is all that matters ☺️ 🎣🐟
Thanks Paul ☺️🙏 Unfortunately not, although it didn’t cause me much aggro at all. I went along the main road out of Collingham, turned left into the small road leading to works, and then right on the track (in front of the works gate) which I followed for quite a while until you reach the conveyor belt entrance, or further on to the lower pegs. Either that or I think you just go to Carlton Ferry Lane in the village and follow the diversion signs 👍
Proper fishing, proper river and not a puddle pig in sight 👍 terrific sense of achievement catching wild fish from a wild river. Nice to see you doing it in the traditional manner, single rod fished property still outfishes two fished lazily under the right conditions. Well done 👏
Many thanks Paul 🤗🎣🐟
John, you are a complete joy to watch and give me, and im sure many other fishermen the feeling to get back out to the shed get the gear dusted off and into the boot. Thank you for such good entertainment!
I’m not sure what I like the most, this lovely comment or your username 😂 Brilliant 🤩 Thanks so much for the kind words and if there’s ‘gear to be found in the shed’ then I’m all in! Cheers 🍻
Hi John
My 2 favourite places on the trent.
@themagicoffishing
Buy the cheapest beef stewing steak/meat, don't wash any of the blood out.
Peter
Another fantastic video John. You really display Angling at its best. You are are a credit to the sport. Regards Jim
@themagicoffishing Your more than welcome. I will be watching alot of your content. And looking forward to the next upload.
Cheers. 🧔 👍
Thank you, Bob! 😀 Next week will be well worth the wait (well, I hope you will agree🤞). Crabs… 🦀 What’s going on there? 🤯
Nice video and some really lovely barbel. I've never managed to catch one on my home river Thames and I'm quite tempted to make this trip up north!
Many thanks my friend 🤗💙👍
Wow, wow, wow!!!
You are such a lucky man!! (Apart from the weather!😂)
Nice one John. Can't wait for the next one! ❤️🎣❤️
@@themagicoffishing So glad to hear. wooow Look forward to seeing the second day now even more now mate. Glad you did it! all the best.
Great video again and as they say the fish don’t change only the tackle dealers. The rod held up fantastically 👍🎣
And what stunning fish 🎣
Thanks as always man ☺️💙 I loved using that old rod and it will hopefully not remain in the corner of the garage anymore - especially if I make it back to the Trent anytime soon 🤞🎣🐟
Barbel are not easy to catch, incredible fish.
Im a cray fisher but love watching this wild fishing, but 6 barbel well done
Thanks mate! No; they are not easy and this was an exceptional day. I’ve only been targeting them on an off for around five years and although a good venue and the right conditions really help, I’ve had many much quieter or completely unsuccessful (at least in terms of catching) sessions before this one. And no doubt there will be plenty more quiet days to come! 😂 Cheers for now 🍻
Hi John, Great video on the Trent and some super fish.
Glad you like our village.
Regards
David
I could , fingers crossed 🤞 have a fab day like you had😀
I look forward to seeing your next video.
Thoroughly enjoyed that 👍🏻
Many thanks Tom 👍☺️🎣🐟 It really was a cracking day.
wow what a session, another fantastic video
Thanks Chris! 💙 Wait til you see next week’s vid…. That’s all I’m saying for now 🐟
I enjoyed this so much that I've just ordered your book 🤣
Great channel, thank you !
Wow, high praise indeed 💙 Your kind words AND custom are much appreciated ☺️ I sincerely hope you enjoy the book - let me know with a comment on another video sometime when chance 👍🎣🐟
Bye heck John, what a session, £10 won't get you much these days, but that is a tenner very well spent. Marvellous as always!
Couldn’t agree more, mate! 👍🎣🐟
Used to fish trent at Beeston marina as a youngun , had a walk down a few yrs ago but now members only
Ahh dang it *laughs*.... There is me trying to reduce my rod collection and seeing how well the rod performed, i've just gone and bagged one myself and collecting today !
Another superb video John and can't wait to get out and bag myself some barbel again now !
Cheers
Paul.
Cheers.
Brilliant comment and thanks for the kind words, Albert 👍 I remember the whisker
name well too!
Nice video mate , thanks for that very enjoyable, tight lines again .
Thanks as always, Mick - your ongoing support is massively appreciated 🙏🤗
A shame, but it seems you either fall head over heels in love with fishing or don’t quite ‘get it’ 😄
Looking forward to reading your book which is arriving tomorrow
What a day! I remember catching my first Barbel... I certainly did think I had hooked a boat! 😂
Thank you my friend ☺️ It’s a magic feeling… 🛥️
Amazing session, well done. Thnx
Thank you 🙏 Means a lot. I don’t want to promise toooooo much, but look out for next Friday’s video to see an ‘unforgettable’ session….
Fantastic video proper river fish they are 💪💪💪💪
Thank you very much 🎣🐟💙 It was a brilliant day. Although not as good as the following day, which is covered in a vid due out this Friday afternoon! Appreciate you taking the time to comment 👍😎
Really enjoyed this. Might have to try Collingham on a day ticket, I fish Besthorpe sometimes but not been up here yet.

I will watch the next one when I can. Great videos though mate, I’m enjoying them.
Nice one John, was going to fish today, but my computer has other ideas grrrrrrr thank you for this and well done.
Brilliant video matey thank you 👍🏻
Many thanks ☺️ And my pleasure 👍
I used to live in Dronfield. My parents and relatives hail from Sheffield.
Going to get you a t shirt printed " Trent Pest Control Officer"
Great days fishing mate well done.
I once pulled a 13.5lb out of the Trent. North muskhan area . ❤
In that case, mate, you’ve caught one I can only imagine for now! What a beast. Great to hear of Muskham again - not fished there for years and years but I have some fond / vague memories. It’s such a massive river! And plenty of massive fish 🐟
@@themagicoffishing my friend called it Rollaston.. not sure on the spelling.. I remember we got snapped by some monsters early morning.. great place.
@@themagicoffishinghemp and caster.. swim feeder. We pulled around 10+ out.. smallest was about 7/8 lb.. Haven't been for years.
Treat yourself to one of the last porky pigs that they made..10x the older rods mate.. great video 👍👍👍🎣🎣🎣🎣
Well done wishing I was there with you 😊
Many thanks Kevin! ☺️💙🎣🐟
Wonderful watch. Were you upstream of the conveyor? I fished there once on peg 88 in a huge flood and caught several Barbel.
I’m glad you’ve also experienced the fantastic fishing on offer there 😎🎣🐟
Pleasure to watch
Thanks for taking the time to let me know - it’s comments like these that keep me going even when life gets busy 🙏👍🎣🐟
Nice video John. Is the Carlton Ferry Lane road back open now after the road was damaged in last years floods.
Think this comment has come up twice - sometimes happens to me 🤷🏻 I replied to the other version in full but the short answer is no, still closed when I was there. But no probs to get to the river.
£10 a day! Gosh! Guaranteed bites and barbell but I'd never pay that. Worksop club book is £30 for the year.
The Trent's on the breed
Don’t know that term I’m afraid (getting old!) but if it means it’s good then I agree!
Had many good nights under collingham weir
Cheers for now 🍻
What I find with some bigger barbel they don't fight til u get them to brake top off water
Thanks for the comment, Paul 👍 Yep, I wish I’d got to see that with the biggie I pulled out of! 😣 Cheers 🍻
Them banks need sorting else another winter like the last and they may well collapse. They appear to have slipped.
I can only imagine the battening they must take every winter - probably under water a fair bit of the time!
Nah best price for fishing the rivers has to bethe Birmingham Anglers Association.
Great days fishing but £10 day ticket is just ridiculous
Cheers mate. I didn’t mind paying it that day I can tell you 🎣🐟🐟🐟
😊
😊
Commercials are for noddies. Youd have to pay me to fish 1.
Nice video John. Is the Carlton Ferry Lane road back open now after the road was damaged in last years floods.
@@themagicoffishing perfect! Thanks John
