Fishing a forgotten river into the dark

  • OK, so the River Loddon in Berkshire is hardly a forgotten river, but it's certainly not as popular as it used to be (so I'm told by several people in the know) and this was my first time fishing a stretch of water that can be overgrown, snaggy and jungle-like during the summer months.
This kind of fishing - off the beaten path and away from the public - made a refreshing change after a few sessions on much bigger and busier rivers in recent weeks, and I couldn't believe I had so much of the Loddon to myself.
Run by Farnham Angling Society, the River Loddon at Sindlesham Mill offers nearly two miles of relatively untamed water, featuring overhanging willows, rafts of vegetation, fast glides and deeper holes. Oh and a few stinging nettles and brambles : )
In this video I get back to a basic tactic and bait of childhood - dangling big lobworms into likely looking spots and fishing for bites. Just to get a sense of what might lurk below and enjoy a bit of roving style fishing. Once known for one or two truly massive barbel, I'm kept happy catching small perch and chub, before settling down to fish pellets and paste into the dark (rather spooky)!
As always, sit back, relax, and enjoy.
