Great video, brings back childhood memories mories, as kids we used to get train from East Croydon to Hampton Court, then chose either your stretch or the nearby Mole or Ember, in those days (1970s) the Ember was a clear sparkling river, we used to catch baby eels hiding under stones, but sadly later ruined by a so called flood aleviation scheme. Happy days.😊
Brilliant memories indeed - reading that, I almost felt like I was there with you. Never been fishing on a train, can you believe that? Plenty of buses in Sheffield, a lot of walking and the odd bike ride. As always, thanks for the kind words and keep em’ coming (as long as I deliver the goods! 🎣 💙
Love it, another great video. Just beautifully conveys the joy of fishing natural waters when the quarry is unknown, rather than puddles where there is 4ft of water and 3ft of fish. Well done!
Hello John, great to see you on the Thames again, and so handy right in front of your stately pile!!🤣😉!!ha ha. How lovely to see those immaculate Dace coming in cast after cast. I wouldn't have been able to resist using my centerpin there- what a lovely spot!! Cheers Peter. Maybe meat next time might be good for Chub and Barbel. Thanks for posting, love your relaxed style.
Love your comments! Thanks and keep ‘em coming. Yep, I must say that meat is my number one choice for chub and barbel under normal circumstances, although I’ve been doing a bit more pellet n boilie fishing of late. I should try combining meat and float fishing again before too long… 🤔 So many places, tactics and baits always competing for my imagination. Thanks for watching and commenting, now I’m off to feed to corgis and water the horses.
Hi John I havent fished the Thames for many years now as I live on the south coast these days, but I remember that cheese paste was always a great hook bait the smellier the better, another great video keep up the sterling work my friend.
Thats a Lovely stretch of the Thames . Up to the Left of where you were is the Mouth of the Mole/Ember ( they merge just upstream a little way past the Bridge ) I used to fish there years ago. Near the Mole outlet you can pick up some good chub, and Up stream towards the Wiers was always a good spot for picking up some Pike on a Sink and draw deadbate or Trotted Gudgeon live bait . . If I remeber right my best carp off that stretch was 18Lb and several decent Chub in the 3 -4Lb range .. Right of where you were could pick up the occasional Barbel using Huge feeders full of Maggots mid river early evening when the traffic was less .. I May have to dig the Rods out .
Hi John, I love your content mate. I've lived local and fished the Thames all my life and Fishing is very difficult in the summer. 1 the constant boat traffic and 2 the fish are just not there in numbers like they used to be. The dumping of raw sewage into the river has had a huge impact as well.
Thanks David. Yes, I’m hearing that although there are some monsters in residence and it’s still possible to have a red letter day with all kinds of species, the fish aren’t perhaps there throughout the river in the kinds of numbers there used to be. But you’re also right that summer can be tricky when it’s low and clear. I’m quite happy exploring for the moment though and I really appreciate comments like this one - thanks 🙏☺️
Hi John I used to fish the Thames upper reaches years ago an miss it badly. Used to fish winter league, Thames championship and pleasure all around inglesham, lechlade, anchor kelmscott, radcot Clanfield. Really miss it. As I now live in East Sussex where rivers are few and far between. You need to try the upper reaches it’s so much better.
Really appreciate those tips, mate, although my head is in a near constant spin these days because there are SO MANY places I need to try! So many Thames spots alone in fact, although I will def try to get on the upper - thanks for these names and they will help me if I’m researching day tickets, free stretches or where to park etc. I’m being urged to try the tidal too. Don’t want to give too much away, but I’m also planning a return to the Trent, plus the Hampshire Avon in the next 4-6 weeks… 🎣🎣🎣🐟🐟🐟🤞🤞🤞 Great to hear from you as always 👍😎
😊I had some great days out there I once had a barbel on the pole in the Thames championship it got me second in my section of 100 people took me ages to get it in. I’ve been a barbel man for over fourty years now used to fish the Bristol Avon a lot when I lived in Swindon. Best there was 12 lb 12 oz and since moving to East Sussex beat my personal best at 15 lbs.
A section of 100… Now that’s a fishing match! 👍👏🎣🐟 I’ve seen one video about catching barbel on a pole, but can’t say I’ve ever tried it, or experienced it 😮 I have actually brought my match gear down from Sheffield for the winter and it’s sat in my garage, so I might need to get the pole out at some point, just not sure I’d target barbel 🤔 Great stories as always, thanks 🙏
Caught my very first fish as a kid from almost that very spot in the early 80s A beautiful little Gudgeon on a crude ledger rig.. Thanks for a great channel and bringing back great memories!
My pleasure! I love hearing from people who know a place where I’ve fished for the first time and have lots of happy memories of it, or know much more about the (fishing) history of the place than I do. I often find that after fishing a few familiar places for a while I get an itch to try somewhere new, and vice versa. Got to love a gudgeon as a first fish, too! There were a few in the tiny farm pond in Derbyshire where I first fished, but it was a little roach that got to my custard flavoured bread paste first 🐟 Thanks for watching and commenting - keep ‘em coming.
Excellent again loving these videos. Just reading your book for the second time. Full of nostalgia and great memories. Got back into my fishing about 7 years ago once my kids had got older. Absolutely loving it 👍🎣
So good to hear from someone who enjoys the book AND the vids - and your comment is very welcome as usual 💙 Also great to know you got back into fishing after a long break. I never really stopped but am definitely doing a lot more than I’ve managed in years for the same reason - kids all getting more independent. Long may it last 🍻🎣
Hello John, thats a lovely strech, and as always great to see Hampton Court, my radiator job is a lot bigger job grrrr, so all being well tomorrow it will be up and running, or I will lol, many years ago i fished with the bridge on my left were the sandbank steps are, with the feeder, after having seen an angler the day before with some nice Bream. I teturned the next morning and had around 45lb and a few nice Roach, and my mate a nice 5lb Chub, really enjoyed this, all the very best mate.
Thanks as always, Clive, always grand to see you on the channel and I know you appreciate (and know!) your Thames fishing. Bream are far from everyone’s cup of tea but as a bit of a matchman I can always enjoy catching some slabs, especially river fish - so that will have to get added to the ever growing target list 🎯🎣🐟 Best of luck with the radiator!
Oh John, you just keep casting the magic. I remember fishing the Thames a few times with my dear old Dad. I took him there as a retirement gift from me. We fished above Hampton Court and the lock opposite a large waterworks. Maggot feeder to an Island point. We caught some beautiful Chub, big perch and an odd eel. On the second trip there no chub but more Perch and some Barbel. I remember hooking something that decided to head downstream to your swim! Never saw it or or got close to landing it.. Suspect that it was an large Thames Carp. Than you for bringing those magic memories back to me. Stay safe and thanks again.
My absolute pleasure, David. I love the fact that many of my videos are a completely new experience for me, but trigger happy memories for those watching. Although I sometimes film at places that mean a lot to me, like the Wey or Trent, I’ve done a load of exploring so far this year and the Thames is certainly a place I’ll return to plenty of times now that I’ve started to discover the fishing at long last. Those trips sound brilliant and I’d love to catch a combination of chub, perch and barbel on a maggot feeder! It’s actually an overlooked method these days and I see a lot of anglers - including myself - going down the groundbait feeder route. I might even give it a go this weekend, as I’m thinking about heading back to the Loddon… 🎣🐟 Thanks as always for taking the time to leave a comment 🙏👍
Yeah, he really is a good’un. So happy to share his hard won knowledge and wants to see others do well. No secret squirrel and, despite his public information, I was still the only one fishing so it’s hardly caused overcrowding from an angling point of view. I think anglers like him should be celebrated, which is what I try to do a bit of with this vid I suppose. Cheers mate.
@themagicoffishing my mobility issued have kept me off the river since that afternoon we met up. That's why I've been at marsh farm so much. I was supposed to meet up with Mucker recently, but, my leg was in a brace & total rest. I'm itching to get on the river Colne on Staines Moor, another free stretch with some lovely chub & barbel, plus decent silvers. One day soon.... all the best.
Afternoon boy's..👍Thank you for your lovely words Smiffy, most appreciated bud..🙏 And what to say about John, well first off Thank You, what a shout out..! Blimey, had me nervous for a moment, was on the edge of me seat in full hope mode for you..🤞🤞Lovely vid, well put together again bud.. Ya both ⭐'s
@themagicoffishing It's been an absolute pleasure watching & learning from your videos John. I had only recently taken up fishing after many years of exodus. I've watched thousands of tutorials, but after reading your book it took me back to my days on the Severn and Avon with my old man. We are part of a greater community of anglers , folk that look out for one another & inspire. You have more than achieved your goal & there's no improvement required, just lots of the same. Cheers John.
@@MUCKER671 I think it was after my last video before this when someone said ‘you want to try Aragon Avenue for barbel, they have really come on the feed after all this rain’… That was just a few days after I’d been (in the heatwave)?! Mad coincidence. I wouldn’t have been there if it weren’t for your vids 🙏🎣🐟
“One last cast”, I think we’ve all said that a few times in our fishing past😂. Another great video John, it shows the benefits of some local knowledge, feeding for a couple of hours before wetting your line certainly paid off. Sure a bigger fish would have been nice but just seeing your float dip and sail away is one of the best feelings I’ve experienced, especially on a beautiful summers evening with a stunning backdrop like the one you had. Keep up the good work, I’m counting the days til my return. ✈️🎣
Couldn’t agree more, Graham. I mean, it would have been magic to hook and land a couple of proper chub, too, but when you’ve never even set eyes on a place before, never mind cast a line there, just to get lots of bites and catch pretty of fish feels like a minor miracle - and an absolute pleasure. It’s not that long ago I was there (I generally post vids around 1-3 weeks after filming), but it already feels a bit surreal to think I was sat in the water with bare feet! Still plenty of lovely weather around at the moment, don’t get me wrong, but we’ve had a bit of a northerly the last few days and it’s been single digits overnight. Thinking of going for a dangle tomorrow and I’ll definitely be wearing socks and boots 😄

My antisocial antenna shot straight out of the hackles of my neck. It must be a Yorkshire thing but if someone comes within noise distance of me when I fish they have ruined my day. In a weird way watching your channel reminds me of the late 1980's watching the late great John Wilson at my grandparents house absolute rose tinted heaven. Keep doing what you do please 👍.
Thank you, Gary 🙏 Sincerely. I remember watching the great Mr Wilson on the telly, too, so even if I only gently trigger some of those rosy memories for you then I’m honoured. First name aside, there’s not a lot in common between the two of us, because he caught a load of big fish 😄 But we both have the same love of fishing, that’s for sure! Keep watching, enjoying and commenting 👍
It NEVER sounds boring to me; John - and I know quite a few in the community enjoy reading the comments so please keep ‘em coming and thanks as always 🙏💙
My family built a small cul-de-sac of houses nearby back in the late 70's. As kids in the summer holidays dad would take us to work and we used to climb over a fence and do a bit of free fishing. Happy days 👍
Another lovely video John & some great condition fish. Really appreciate the shots of the flora & fauna as well. Gives a sense of the season and the wonder of being immersed in nature when on the bank. Off to buy myself some terminal tackle this weekend and also took delivery of a swing tip for my rod today - remember them?!
Swing tips! One of the most exhilarating ways to see a bite, in my humble opinion. Like the rock n roll version of quiver tips 😎 We used to make them with bits of rubber tubing 👍 Love the fact they’re still being used and you might have given me an idea for a video one day… 🤔👌👏
Haha! Yeah, casting could be a little tricky from memory. I think you just have to slow down and make sure everything is hanging properly behind you before casting forward, then a little bit of feathering the line (gentle finger pressure on the lip of the spool just before everything lands) helps straighten the tip and the rig out. But I’m sure you will get the knack of it. Best used on less windy days and stillwaters or very slow rivers, but seeing that trip twitch or rise slowly straight is fantastic. If it’s a fairly light tip and the rubber joint is soft, I think they can be more sensitive - and exaggerate the indications better - than a quiver. Don’t think I’ve even got a rod with a screw eye these days, but I could have a look on eBay… 🤔
Many thanks for the encouragement and the tips, Peter 🙏 What kind of tactics, bait and feed were you using? River stocks obviously change over the years but interesting to know you used to catch fairly close in. I’m also tempted to try right up by the weir when the river’s a bit lower and the barbel might be seeking out that white water.
@@themagicoffishing maggots and corn in day. Meat at night. Best midweek less boat traffic. It’s hard work to fish the weir down the mole the authorities don’t even let boats go there. Everyone wanted to fish there up by the weir and if you did the authorities were there within 15 minutes day or night. Maybe it’s changed I don’t know. The fellow who put you there in the first place might have more information than me on that one. Keep the videos coming
Cheers mate, love comments like these as it’s not always possible to bag up or bag a biggie! I like to think this is a channel for people who appreciate that fact - and realise it’s just a hobby for me / and can just enjoy the ‘magic’ of every day or night by the water. Thanks for taking the time as always 😎🎣🐟💙
Great! Brought back nice memories fishing the Chew at Dapps Hill, Keynsham. Dace like that and bigger every cast. No fancy gear just maggots and size 16 spade end hooks.
Always good to hear from a fellow spade end user (if you tie them like me’.) 😄 Amd a dace appreciater! Only one ‘proper’ one that session and mostly small stuff but someone had me chuckling with a comment about Thames dace the other week - they said they used to catch ‘em like herrings 😄🐟 Thanks for watching and commenting 🙏
Lovely video as always mate. Now I have sorted out a ticket for you we have got to get you over to the dog and jog for our north v south/ match v specimen encounter. I promise to leave the bivvy and buzzers at home and I will even get my seat box out . Pick a day and I will make sure I’m free. I will even put you in the second best swim. I can’t be fairer than that can I lol
When we get home from Suffolk I will go over for another 2 days of practice because of all the stick I’ve given you I can’t let you beat me or I will never hear the end of it. Will I LOL
I can't believe it!! I took nearly 2 hours in a comment telling the story of a disappearing angler from last week.... and it looks like YT have taken it down!!!All that one finger typing and a magnifying glass to find the keys, and this happens. Not happy.
Graham, I’m not happy about that either. But I AM happy to see you back on the channel! 💙😎 Later than usual and now I understand why… 😣🤯😬😦 You can always send me an email to themagicoffishing@gmail.com - typed in your own time - and I can post it. But I can understand if you will need a break before revisiting… Or send me your address and I’ll come and interview you some time! 🎣
You need to get a Thames weir permit for t h e summer. Quality and size of fish much better You also have Walton and Kingston for the cat population and Kingston opposite the Hogsmill for Carp
Ooooooh, that sounds interesting! Many thanks for the tip 🙏 I’m almost glad I can’t look into it until next year, though, as I now have a list of places to try and fish a mile long 😄 It’s a nice problem to have. Cheers for now 👍🍻
@themagicoffishing I used to fish the Thames a lot when I lived in the area so feel free to message for any questions. Saying that with Nellie as a mate there's few that now more than him. I've lost touch over the years with him but next time you see tell him Chris from Stoney and Friends sends his regards.
Haha, sorry about this situation, Gary 😄 I’ll try to do a few vids away from your old haunts in the coming weeks… Seriously though, I hope you can also enjoy the flashbacks and I here Norfolk has its fair share of good fishing. Cheers for now 🍻

Off to buy myself some terminal tackle this weekend and also took delivery of a swing tip for my rod today - remember them?!
Swing tips! One of the most exhilarating ways to see a bite, in my humble opinion. Like the rock n roll version of quiver tips 😎 We used to make them with bits of rubber tubing 👍 Love the fact they’re still being used and you might have given me an idea for a video one day… 🤔👌👏
@@themagicoffishing please do because I’m clueless as to how to use it properly or cast with it!
I fished that exact spot 100s of times in 70s and 80s. It’s best in September and October. 2 rod lengths out your catch all day.
Always an engaging watch John, regardless of what you catch
Cheers mate, love comments like these as it’s not always possible to bag up or bag a biggie! I like to think this is a channel for people who appreciate that fact - and realise it’s just a hobby for me / and can just enjoy the ‘magic’ of every day or night by the water. Thanks for taking the time as always 😎🎣🐟💙
Ember and Mole merge about 200m above Thamed
Ahhh, that makes sense (as to why I’ve heard both names used). Thanks for clarifying 👍👌
Haha, it’s a deal! 🎣🐟 🤝
When we get home from Suffolk I will go over for another 2 days of practice because of all the stick I’ve given you I can’t let you beat me or I will never hear the end of it.
Will I LOL
Spent a lot of school holidays fishing between the lock n the bridge on the other side of bridge, 77 - 80...huge Gudgeon
I like a gudgeon! 😎🐟
@@themagicoffishing they eat them in France
I can't believe it!! I took nearly 2 hours in a comment telling the story of a disappearing angler from last week.... and it looks like YT have taken it down!!!All that one finger typing and a magnifying glass to find the keys, and this happens. Not happy.
Graham, I’m not happy about that either. But I AM happy to see you back on the channel! 💙😎 Later than usual and now I understand why… 😣🤯😬😦
You can always send me an email to themagicoffishing@gmail.com - typed in your own time - and I can post it. But I can understand if you will need a break before revisiting… Or send me your address and I’ll come and interview you some time! 🎣
You need to get a Thames weir permit for t h e summer. Quality and size of fish much better
You also have Walton and Kingston for the cat population and Kingston opposite the Hogsmill for Carp
Mate why do u do this to me . Miss the Thames alot since moving to norfolk love dace my favourite fish These r the places I used to fish
Haha, sorry about this situation, Gary 😄 I’ll try to do a few vids away from your old haunts in the coming weeks… Seriously though, I hope you can also enjoy the flashbacks and I here Norfolk has its fair share of good fishing. Cheers for now 🍻
@@themagicoffishing love the vids and the fishing is good here but still miss it try teddington lock
I’ll add it to the list 👍🎣🐟
I can watch this now your not using a keepnet john😊
Haha! Welcome back 🤗 For now at least 😄 I don’t think I use one in the next 1-2 videos either, but I can’t promise it will last. Cheers
