This album is just something else. She is such a gem, and I love how absolutely dedicated she is to her craft. She is just unwaveringly creative and expressive, what a Queen.

This album is a piece of art. This might be my favorite Kate Bush album reaction! I've never seen someone being this mind-blown and it was so amazing to see. You have to react to all her albums! My favorite album is her 4th album, The Dreaming from 1982, it's the album before this one and it's even more ahead of its time! It's so experimental. From that album onwards she was the sole producer. She also has another concept suite on her 2005 album Aerial, it's my second favorite album, I'd love to see a reaction to that too! She performed both of these concept suites live in 2014 on her Before the Dawn shows!

It's nuts! If you listen to her interviews she seems so soft spoken and demure. Give her a mic and a decent band behind her and she'll conjure images of being an astronaut riddled with guilt as if she were responsible for a cyclone about to annihilate thousands.
She isn't shy and she isn't particular. She is the most fearless artist, man or woman I have ever heard.
    And she's not finished.

The sequence of songs from And Dream of Sheep until the end was written as a song sequence Kate called The Ninth Wave, about a woman lost at sea.
My favourite album ever. Kate is a master of her art.

It really makes me mad that the music isn’t presented properly on streaming services, or online stores. The appreciation of the elements that comprise something like The Ninth Wave can only be enhanced when you know they are part of a larger suite. Not all reactors get that, and I don't blame them. It should be visually indicated on-screen.

No one like her before or since. One of the most strikingly original and important musical artists of the modern era. She is a total anomaly in her creativity…and I have heard them all. And she isn’t afraid to scale back and be selflessly subtle even though she probably knows she is a genius. Her music is a gift.

Nice thoughtful reaction/analysis. Kate was most often associated with the art pop/art rock/prog rock genres just to try fitting her somewhere but she was really her own genre. She is very special and did it all - singer, songwriter, composer, pianist, music revolutionary, producer, dancer, mime, choreographer, video director and innovator, visionary. Laughable that it has taken until 2023 for her to be inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, something she is clearly over qualified for. Debatable whether any other female artist, past or present, has come close to her. Didn’t really do mainstream and only did the one live tour back in 1979. Never toured the US and did not fit anywhere in America’s format driven radio network at that time. The fact that she was known at all in the US prior to the 1985 release of ‘Running Up That Hill’ owed much to college radio.
‘Jig of Life’ was an Irish jig and reel, not a sea shanty. A strong Celtic influence is often heard in Kate’s songs. She had an Irish mother who was an amateur Irish dancer, and she listened to a lot of English and Irish folk music that her two much older brothers were very much into when she was growing up.
It is best to do some minimal research on a Kate Bush song for context before reacting to it. Going in blind is favoured by many reactors but Kate’s music is unique and often doesn’t follow traditional song structures or lyric writing. It can hit the ears in ways not expected, confusing the listener, which can get in the way of enjoying the song. Kate often writes from another person’s perspective and usually sings in character, supporting the story with appropriate accents, emotions and (with her singles) class-leading music videos. There is no one like her but she has inspired countless other artists to investigate new paths.
As for other albums of hers to listen to, each brings something different. Her fourth album ‘The Dreaming’ is probably the one to do next - the first album that she sole produced and an album that is notorious for being highly experimental and known by many as her “non-commercial” album. And then perhaps her third album ‘Never Forever’, which was her first dive into production as Co-producer. Her first album ‘The Kick Inside’ was a great debut album of self-written songs released when she was 19. Remember this was 1978 and women didn’t do that kind of thing back then.

You certainly couldn't go wrong if you listened to her albums in release order, so you can see how she developed as an artist.
Kate has been fearless from the very start of her music career, starting with her fught with her record company to get "Wuthering Heights" released as her debut single and some of the subjects covered in her debut album "The Kick Inside", which also included a song written when she was 13 years old.
By her late teens Kate had written about 200 songs, she had been writing them from when she was 11, adding more complex lyrics when aged 13.

Those backing vocals you liked so much on Cloudbusting - when I saw Kate in her London residency in 2014, Cloudbusting was the second encore and last song of the night, and at the end the whole audience was on their feet clapping and singing the backing vocals. A wonderful end to a fantastic concert.
For the full beauty of Kate's voice listen to the songs "This Woman's Work" and "Moments of Pleasure".

Hearing this album for the first time in my late teens just blew my mind and ever since it's never lost its ability to inspire my imagination and bring up deep feelings. As others have said, it's a masterpiece and she's a lyrical, vocal and compositional virtuoso.

To put it in simple terms Kate Bush is a musical genius. Welcome into world of that nice English lady who gave us "Running Up That Hill" and has also given us a whole other world all her own!
Some people restrict themselves to trying out her singles or official videos as an introduction to her music and that is great. But when they do they sometimes find such a diverse, and array of styles and moods that they cannot really get to grips as to what her 'sound' or genre really are.
To really get to grips with her music the best thing is to go to her albums and 'Hounds of Love' is as good a place to start as any - it is just about perfect after all. But if you turn to her albums you will quickly discover that throughout her career she set out to make each album different from what she did beforehand. You will find too that she is utterly uncompromising in what she does with her music - she makes the music she wants to make and we have to decide to either like it or not. She is VERY bold, experimental, and risk-taking in the sounds, subject matter, vocal style, arrangements and pairing of musical instruments that she chooses. She will take you to very dark places in very dark subjects but do so with incredible tenderness and beauty, but at the same time she will shock or disturb you in a very matter of fact way. She writes songs dealing ghosts, monsters, aliens, nuclear holocaust, mourning, incest, pregnancy, suicide, seances, menstruation, sex in all of its facets, religion, philosophy, reincarnation, snowflakes, revenge, murder, birdsong, civilization, demon possession, hauntings, the beauty of the male body, and fairy tales. She writes songs inspired by movies, books, TV programmes, poems, folklore, horror stories - from Emily Bronte, Stephen King, to Kubrick, to Hitchcock, to Truffaut, to Tennyson, and Shakespeare. She will give you songs in Irish and French.
She has a beautiful and wonderful singing voice (just check out 'Reaching Out' or 'This Woman's Work') but she deliberately muddies it is or gnarls it in order to suit the song - she even sings songs in an Irish, or Cockney, Or Australian accent.
She did her first tour 'The Tour of Life' in 1979 and in the process completely revolutionized the way that tours were done (and caused the creation of the head mic as part of that), and proceeded to not do another tour for over 35 years (tickets for those 2014, twenty two night run of concerts sold out in 15 minutes)!
On her third album she was named as co-producer and after that she went to produce all of her albums herself with the result that basically she owns every single note and beat and sound on her music.
She is, simply put, out on her own: John Lennon had one of her songs on his personal playlist just before he was killed; Jimmy Page is a fan, as was Prince, as is Bjork as is even John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten from the Sex Pistols).

If you like "The Ninth Wave" part of this album? Check out "A Sky Of Honey" off "Aerial". Sge really is just on another level. Great rock songs, great pop songs, great ballads and then the concepts. Another idea might be to react to "The Ninth Wave" live off her "Before The Dawn" live album from her 2014 concert. That had to have been a mindblowing concert.

I am so impressed with your reaction. You nailed the storyline of the Ninth Wave. Hello Earth also my favourite song on this timeless album. Kate's 1982 album The Dreaming is probably the one I would recommend next, though it is far from accessible, very experimental, but you seem to enjoy that aspect of her music!

best reaction to this album i've ever seen!! when i first heard this album, i was mind-blown. i had a hand clasped to my mouth basically the entire time and nearly cried just at the pure beauty of it. i was stunned. i've never seen anyone have that same reaction, so it's great to see someone who seems similarly taken aback in the best way possible!!! i'd recommend you listen to the dreaming by her -- it's her fourth album and even more experimental than this one. it's slightly less accessible, so be wary going in, but keep an open mind because it's another absolutely breathtaking album. thanks for this reaction!

The video still turned out good. Love this album. Waking The Witch blew my mind when I first listened to it. At first I wasn't sure if I liked it or not but it grew on me and its one of my favorites. I loved the beginning part, it almost brought a tear to my eye for how beautiful it sounded and then BAM, it was like a dream that instantly turned into a nightmare, but it was still amazing. About what you said though at the end of the video where almost didn't react to this, are there albums that you listened too where you were like "damn I should've done a reaction to this"?

I personally slip in a RUclips playing of Burning Bridge just after Cloudbusting and before And Dream of Sheep. In my opinion, this makes Side One absolutely complete and perfect. Then, at the very end of the album, I play (again from RUclips) Kate's rendition of My Lagan Love. For me, these two additions make a "Super Deluxe" version of this masterpiece of an album. (BTW, these extra songs were among the bonus track offerings on the 1997 CD release of Hounds of Love - which is why I consider them appropriate extras).

Sorry, this comment is going to be too long... I've watched (too) many reaction videos recently, and that's the one I've enjoyed the most because it's the closest one to my own reaction to that album when I was about your age back in 1985. You took me right back to my large shared student room in Edinburgh Southside, my hair was like yours (and is long once again after a career of being short!) The difference is that I had been a mahoosive Kate Bush fan since the first time I hear her in 1978, and that was 7 long years of build-up to the day I ran down to the record shop and bought the album and ran back up to the flat to play it all day long. My memories of that afternoon are a bit hazy shall we say, but I do remember by mid-afternoon at least 20 people draped all over the room (it was an eagerly-anticipated day) and I was industrially skinning up cigarettes on the album cover sitting on the floor with the headphones on (they were very demanding)... I think I had a mild psychotic episode during Under Ice one time round, I thought it was actually me under the ice, but it passed... people were generally reacting like you just did, it was mind-blowing, and remember, we hadn't heard anything past 1985 at that point, this was an album from the future. I can assure you too, the pleasure lasts, it sounded just as good there as it did 38 years ago, and I hope it opens her up for you, she's a true artist, one of the very few... thanks for the reaction, it really took me there.
Oh and don't forget to watch the videos too, she's very visual, and beautiful, all 4 singles from the 1st side are good.
Enjoy your trip, and it is a trip.

While "Hounds of Love" is a masterpiece, it's not my favorite Kate Bush album. "The Ninth Wave" (Side 2) however, is my favorite side of Kate Bush's brilliant catalog. It's EVERYTHING Kate is wrapped into one glorious suite. (For the record: "THE DREAMING" is my favorite album... it's her most unusual and adventurous album, but not everyone's with her on that.)
THE NINTH WAVE never fails to move me. That final, beautiful moment (The Morning Fog) hits so emotionally hard... much like "No Surprises" on RADIOHEAD'S "OK Computer" there's this moment of musical beauty that transcends everything. It's amazing... and since you get it... you should work your way backward to her earlier albums (particularly "THE DREAMING" and "NEVER FOR EVER."
Great stuff! ... and if you want some brilliant concept albums: GRANDADDY "The Sophtware Slump", THE DELGADOS "Hate," and PETER GABRIEL (Kate's Art Pop accomplice) led GENESIS "THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY" (which is a total trip...).

So fun watching you get The Ninth Wave, it is truly a masterpiece. She wanted to release the album with two titles, Hounds of Love and The Ninth Wave, but EMI wouid not allow it!! LOL
After The Dreaming, she was being pressured to go more commercial and she refused at first...but then she had a plan...
    A wonderful awful plan..
She would split the pie in two and give the record company their half (Hounds) and for the second half she would pull out the stops and do her own thing!! Incredible that they got the charting singles that they wanted AND she got what she wanted with The Ninth Wave!
Has that EVER happened before or since with any artist? Splitting it right down the middle like that? And succeeding wildly?

The Ninth Wave - 1- Lost at sea, struggling to stay awake, but wanting to sleep
2 - Dreaming that she sees herself drowning
3 - hallucinating about a past life as a witch being 'tested'
4 - Frustrated that she can't tell her family what is happening
5 - Her future self begging her to survive so that the future self can live too
6 - OOB experience? looking at earth and herself from space
7 - rescued and appreciating life and family more than ever

32:23 This is exactly why it's really important to *listen* to some albums rather than just pick and choose from tracks. Try her Arial album (2005), the second CD, "A Sky of Honey" is a similar concept album intended as a single 42 minute track.

Hey, your bands debut album is fire : )
Hounds Of Love is fire as well.
I didn't know you also make music yourself, that's cool. Definitely keep it up! Midnight Session is also a memorable name.
What instrument do you play on that record btw?
Kate is so unique, every album of hers has a different sound and style. Hounds of Love is probably her most diverse album. Hit single material next to irish folk music and piano ballads. I always wanted someone to react to the full album, as most people just seem to react to one or two songs from that album, but especially with the second side of this album, I think it works better as a whole experience.
I'm just so excited because I released my debut album a few days ago as well. It's so encouraging that so many people are now releasing their music by uploading it on Spotify or Bandcamp or posting it on RUclips. Like, there are no boundaries. You can just make what you want and put it out without the need of getting a contract with a music label first.
I started doing my own music after I found out another music reaction guy released his own music. Now after listening to Midnight Session I have a new goal - I want to be in a band...

The term 'genius' is often overused noweverdays, but in the context of Kate Bush it's truly an understatement.
A Sky of Honey (Aerial - Side B)' is a must listen! it's totally outstanding!!!!!

I love this album so much. I always felt like Running Up That Hill was an odd way to start this album. It is her most popular track, but it's still great though I do prefer her less accessible tracks from this album. She is so theatrical in her delivery, composition, and overall sound in very much a Kate way. I always appreciate artists whose voice and sound is so unique you couldn't mistake them for *anyone* else though it's not a requirement. Anyway, glad you're enjoying this one. I'm partway through watching and can't wait to see what you think about the Ninth Wave 😄

Okay, I finally finished up the video. I knew you'd love it, especially the Ninth Wave! One day I was riding the train on the way home from work and listening to this album on my iPod. "Waking the Witch" came on and scared me awake 🤣 I almost immediately realized it was just the song, but for a millisecond I really felt like some rando on the train was telling me to wake up 😂

Thanks for your video. I wonder if it's meaning is a kind of secular baptism. The first half of the album is about emotions, relationships, joy and life. The second is the story of a drowning woman but also a metaphor of near death, rescue and rebirth. A second chance. The beauty of Kate Bush is the layers and the personal interpretations and meanings. She is a genius and her work is beautiful, often fun, serious and light-hearted. Listen to her other work. I love that her albums are conceptual and she often returns to themes on different across her music.

OK the second half of the album is a suite. Telling the story of a girl lost at sea and almost drowning before being rescued at the end. Some parts you may not care for and others you will love. For me the Jig of Life is my fave and the last song which is just too short. It could have gone on for another 5 minutes as far as I'm concerned.

If you like this, there are a couple of quite obscure Finnish albums with very similar vibes (especially to the second half), which I highly recommend: Hyväile minua pimeä tähti by Eleanoora Rosenholm, and Ilmatar by Värttinä. They are both all in Finnish, but that just makes them more mysterious and disorienting (I don’t speak it myself, and not being able to understand is not a problem).

I suggest you react to Kate's "evil" sister, Nina Hagen, specifically her album Nunsexmonkrock.
Some people say she sounds like Kate Bush was possesed and this album is the most unhinged use of human voice ever put on record. I don't see this album as evil, but more like the wrath of angels in ecstasy.
It's one of those albums that you madly love or hate, no room for middle ground. It's also an album of the early 80's but it's not so easy to date.

The problem with a first reaction so long after the album was released is that elements have been stolen and copied, while sounds have become normalized. Kate was one of the very first - and very few - people to get their hands on a Fairlight Synth. An Australian made machine that cost more than a house. It was such a revolutionary machine that music shows on tv did features on it, as previews to music videos they were about to show.
Up to the point of the Fairlight, synthesizers were analogue and not that good, the player would just blend oscillators and maybe add some white or pink noise to get a tome that they liked. The Fairlight was digital and most importantly could sample. You could actually put any sound you liked into it, and then tailor it as you wished - you mentioned the sound of glass breaking on this album. The machine could also flip, reversing alter soundwaves, allowing you to invent instruments and create sounds that were not possible in any other manner and sounds that had never been heard. They also allowed for sequencing, and since they could create or recreate any sound, and could also be used as percussion instruments.
The result was not only the amazement at Kates musical abilities, but people were also hearing sounds that had never existed, while her music will last forever, new listeners will never quite comprehend how listening to one of her albums was like a whole new world.
