  • Hope you enjoyed!! So , this video has no claims on it (subject to change of course) but this is because I edited each song individually and then uploaded them individually at a low quality to test what needed to be edited, safe to say this took hours and hours and hours !! I know the editing style is different now but I'm fed up with my videos getting demonetised. Remember these videos are about my reaction OF COURSE and I definitely keep all the best bits in and of course my thoughts and analysis! If you would rather see it in all it's glory then head over to Patreon ! Much Love !

    One of THE most important albums for female pop and Kate Bush herself. It was a breaking point in her career. She released some very artsy stuff and the public turned on her. The label wanted something more easily digestible so Kate whipped out thise pop CLASSICS on Side A and wrote one of the most beautiful pieces in music with Side B (The Ninth Wave)
    An absolute masterclass by pops biggest conqueror. 💕

    The last 7 songs of this album are a song cycle called "The Ninth Wave". Kate has another such song cycle called "A Sky of Honey" from the album Aerial -- another masterpiece.

      And a quite unexpected one. She switched from her heavily produced music (I'm not complaining !) to a stripped-down drums-bass-guitar-keyboards affair, and her genius made it work…

Of all Kate's albums it's the one that I play the most, Kate's advice when listening to the album is "play it loud"...

    This album is important in the music industry and also for me. This album really catapulted me into indie music, I grew up with 80's metal and rock music, but I never heard of Kate Bush until I found her on Spotify in 2014 in high school. I owe Kate so much love and praise for shaping me into the person I am today. Her writing made me feel things I never felt from music before, and her page introduced me to other indie girls from modern times: Annie Lennox, Florence, AURORA, Björk...

      I was 16 when this album held hands with XTC's "Skylarking" and proceeded to usher me into a musical world not dominated by Top 40 radio & Van Halen. I say "ushered me into," rather than "ushered me away," because 35 years on, I still have time for Top 40 and Van Halen. But, when I only have time for one of the few truly perfect albums I've ever heard, "Hounds of Love" is there.

  • @markjohnson4217
    @markjohnson4217 2 года назад +11

    All of these last pieces are part of the second half, Kate's epic masterpiece, The Ninth Wave. Apparently, after the mixed reception she recieved for The Dreaming, her darkest and most extreme album, EMI were pressuring her to release an album of chart-topping singles. I think there was something of a middle finger response to that at firsr, Lol...
    But then...she pulls off one of the most jaw-dropping 'stunts' in recording history, she CUTS the pie exactly in half, gives them their pop song half, 'Hounds of Love', from which 4 tracks were very successful singles, and then completes her half, The Ninth Wave, which is a beautiful, terrifying, bewildering opus that takes us into the depths of the collective unconcious and back again. The fact that each half achieved EXACTLY what was intended is astounding, it is THIS that shows us that this is no ordinary recording artist, this is a Rembrandt, a Van Gogh, someone who can, even in a small single stroke, leave us completely speechless.

    • @pateris
      @pateris 2 года назад +1

      True, though I would hardly qualify this first part as "sell-out". It's just slightly less experimental… She didn't go like David Bowie with "Let's dance". Had she went "commercial", she would have gone on a world tour…

    • @markjohnson4217
      @markjohnson4217 2 года назад +3

      @@pateris I agree, the first half was not a sell out, the songs are fantastic, but there was such a clear line drawn betwwen the two, that she originally wanted two separate titles for the album. Another copyright lesson was learned; no album, book, film, or recording of any kind can be released under two titles for catalogue reasons. The catalogue number and title are really all that they have as a reference for tracking any release. And as far as touring goes, Kate 's reasons for not touring had nothing whatsoever to do with the charts. This is one of the wealthiest women in the UK, she doesn't HAVE to do anything. I am so happy that she hss blessed us with these incredible recordings, because she really doesn't have to.

    I have to thank my cousin because she introduced me to Kate Bush and Florence + the Machine and reintroduced me to Fiona Apple after I had lost track of her work. Those are now my three favorite artists.
    Anyway she first introduced me to Running Up That Hill which didn’t grab me right away, because honestly most of the time when someone plays a song for me I barely pay attention. I’m not sure why. Then later on another friend introduced me to her older work and I got into her that way. What a lovely reaction, one of the best I've seen! I love Kate so much. I'm glad you could hear how much influence she's had on so many artists! She was groundbreaking. The first few songs are pop masterpieces but still so unique, then she surprises us with this genius concept piece "The Ninth Wave" that is absolutely timeless and such an experience. A woman is drifting alone at sea and she's trying so hard to not fall asleep and she's imagining all these things, but luckily she gets saved and now appreciates life more than ever. Can you believe she produced this all by herself?!? You need to do more Kate because it seems like you will love her! I recommend starting from the beginning now because seeing her evolution is so fascinating!
    I discovered Kate when I heard Cloudbusting in a TV series in 2019 and I remembered I had heard of her before when someone compared Marina to her, and I just loved the song immediately and the rest is history! Not to sound dramatic but she changed my life. I wish I could hear her music for the first time again, you're so lucky! Also I really recommend watching her music videos, they're art!

    So, my Kate Bush story goes back to my school time where my danish teacher introduced her Experiment V video for us to analyse (it is cool). Then I rediscovered her in the late 80's and worshipped her for years and years. But the albums are very far apart in this millenium, so am very happy to have discovered Aurora, who gives me many Kate Bush vibes. Both starts writing songs very young. Both plays the piano. Both very innovative in the way they make music. Both are into interpretive dancing :D Both are activists in the political issues of their day. It goes on, but the main reason is that they occupy the same place in my heart. I often joke that I was born 20 to late for Kate and 20 years to early for Aurora. If I could suggest your next Kate Bush album, it would be "the kick inside", her first album. Her voice i much younger sounding on that album, but the lyrics are still from an old soul. (Again, like Aurora). I keep going back to that album. Loved your reaction, Fern.

We meet Kate's child in Prelude, we saunter through a beautiful day in the English countryside, we see Kate and her partner using the nighttime ocean as a safe welcoming playground in the sensual Nocturn. @cuckoofan 2 года назад +1

      I second that! Liz Fraser's's voice is just amazing in every way as much in lower tones as in her usual ethereal high register which is nothing but magical. Kate Bush has always been my favourite artist in every way possible (songwriting, visual presentation, ethics, production, conception) but I must admit Elizabeth Fraser, for me, is the best singer ever in pop. "Blue Bell Knoll" might be the album that displays that the most but "Victorialand" is just fantastic! Still, "Heaven or las Vegas" still is my favourite one. Yes Fern, go for Cocteau Twins please!🙃

    • @kolnidur_

      @@cuckoofan Victorialand is my favourite Cocteau Twins album, absolutely fantastic, but a bit too ambient for Fern, I think. Treasure or HoLA may be better as first taste

    • @cuckoofan
      @cuckoofan 2 года назад +1

      @@kolnidur_ I agree. "Heaven or Las Vegas" or Four Calendar Café" are probably the easiest ones to dive into, "Treasure" would be OK too (allthough less interesting and diverse), but vocally, "Blue Bell Knoll" is probably the most impressive, and it's definitely better to appreciate it fully once you've heard some other albums. Always difficult to choose a favourite CT's album for me because I really love them all (except "Garlands" which is interesting to know as a part of the evolution but much less personal or original). I guess "HoLV" is probably the one that moves me most for some reason, but other ones are much as great. Some of their EPs are equally interesting. So sad Cocteau Twins are not enough talked about as they sounded like nothing else but so glad to hear Elizabeth's wonderful voice back again through this Sun's Signature project new ep (to be released on June 18th).

    Love this classic one of my fav Kate Bush albums. I properly got into Kate Bush in 2019 when I heard people saying she was similar to FKA twigs and I fell in love. Speaking of twigs I was just wondering if you have seen any of the music videos (Caprivids) for Caprisongs she's done like 10 but most of them are just small snippets from the songs but are still really fun. Could be a fun video

    I'm really surprised you've not heard a Kate album before, especially as so many singers you do reactions too are so heavily influenced by her. If you're going to check out another kate album I would suggest the Dreaming, which is her at her weirdest and most brilliant.

    This Album made me a fan of Kate Bush back in 1985 (around). She has always been one of the most unique artists in the history of pop music concerning her music as well as the lyrics. Her albums are mostly conceptional and have always been a reflection of her personal life or her thoughts about life. Chapeau! You made a brilliant analysis of this album (to which i listened to surely over a 100 times until now) and brought even some new aspects over it to my mind. By the way, your optics are not so far away from Kate´s - take this as a compliment 😘

    OH MY GOD YES!!! I wasn't expecting it so soon and oh my god I also like hearing people talking as I fall asleep too, I like to put on hour lomg analysis of movies or politic discussions, also the Ninth Wave, the second half of HOL, was supposed to be movie, Kate always invisioned it as a visual piece too but never happened but in 2014 she did a residence in england called Before The Dawn where part of it was the ninth wave performed as a whole piece, she even had a pool where she would start the performance in since the idea is a women lost at sea trying not to drawn. She would do another two pieces like that in her next two albuns, one of wich did got a visual piece that you can finf it full on RUclips it's called The Line, The Cross and The Curve from the album Red Shoes and the other is called Am Endless Sky of Honey from the alb Aerial wich is part of her 2014 residence, unfortunately we never got any recording of it amd she never came out public ever again, we are in her second longest hiatus now

    I really enjoyed your reaction. This is not a reaction request, just a recommendation since you loved "Dream of Sheep." Kate wrote another beautiful piano ballad called "Under the Ivy" as a B side to the "Running Up That Hill" single and many fans consider it a hidden gem. You won't find it on any streaming service, so here it is:

    The haunting vocal sample on Hello Earth is a Georgian folk song called Zinskaro (version performed by the Vokal Ansambl Gordela). I heard it in the ‘70s remake of Nosferatu a few years back, and then when I revisited Hounds of Love later my mind was blown to realize I had heard it sampled before and not noticed.

    De las mejores reacciones que he visto!!! Lo mejor es dejarse llevar por la música y Kate hechiza con cada canción, siento que este álbum es tan hermoso y único que creo nunca escucharé algo igual que me despierte el mismo sentimiento. Cada canción es perfecta y esta puesta de una forma que cuando termina este viaje, sentis que al igual que la chica de la historia de Kate, estuviste en un largo y mágico sueño. Sin dudas Fern desbes reaccionar a The Dreaming donde todo esto se ve más potenciando y con una experimentación aún más fuerte. Hermosa reacción y disfrute cada una contigo mientras las analizabas □♡▪♧

    I wonder if Kate Bush used plate reverb on Hounds of Love! It's a metal plate held onto a frame with springs, and it's supposed to bounce slightly and create that slapback effect you've described. You also opened up my mind about her vocal timbre. I never thought about it.
