Kai been watching you since 2011 2012 digital rev alamby days. Loved the content then and love the content now. Seems like you can be a little more edgy and not so PG because you don’t have to a major brand behind you. Just wanted to show some love from an old supporter!
Absolutely adore my Canon 85mm 1.8. Have used it for everything from portraits to wildlife to sport to street, and have even put some macro extenders between it and the camera and used it for museum still life work. Just wonderful. Great video as always Kai
Often the gold ones are not worth it when you compare all the little extras. First you look at the lense and say, yeah, it's just two stops less light. That's ok.But then it is a little darker already and you don't have IS, so you lose another 4 stops, because your subject might be stable enough, but your hands are not. And then it is raining cats and dogs and you think: Ah, what the heck, its just a $400 lense, I am gonna be ok … and you are not, meanwhile the weather sealed L does not care at all, and brings now the creamiest boke + 6 stops more light, which really helps, because it's pissing and everything is gloomy and sulky from the rain, but your shots are perfect in catching that atmosphere. ;-) At the other hand, if my body is not weather sealed ... why bother? ^_^ But the extra features really do add up and the new L1.4 seems really, really good. With a $1200 price difference the gold ring seems still rather solid … with those 100mm macros the difference is just $300 with similar differences, but those come both just at F2.8, so the glass itself does not differentiate the gold from the red ring so much. Now thinking about it, the F1.8 is just 1 1/3 stops better than the 100mm F2.8 macro. So the macro might be a good alternative with those 4 stops of IS ... 100mm in general has iirc some bokeh advantages as well as long as you the extra space to get the same framing. And with the 100mm you the weather sealing, the portrait shots, the IS and on top a very good macro lense on top. For just twice the price of the cheap 85mm.
f1.0 - f1.4 - f2.0 - those are 1 stop differences. f1.2 -> f1.4 that's 1/3 of a stop, and f1.4 -> f1.8 that's 2/3. So basically, f1.2 -> f1.8 is only 1 stop, not nearly as 2,3,4 or whatever stops.
Which lens did you end up getting? I’m debating the 1.4 canon versus the new RF 1.2 version. I’m trying to find folks who have used the 1.4 version adapted to the new RF cameras
The King of Bokeh has to be either: Canon 85mm 1.2L Nikon 105mm 1.4 Canon 200mm f1.8 Canon/Nikon 200mm f/2 Canon/Nikon 400mm f/2.8 Canon 50mm f1.0 Leica 50mm f0.95
I have 85/1.2 II L. Its' great lens, but: 1. Focus by wire - if your AF system will die, you will have to pay about 1/4-1/3 value of lens to replace AF module (forget about manual focus); 2. Lot of CA, even at 2.8 they're still visible. 3. Slow AF, works ok on 1DX, but on 6D only center point is usable with this lens. If you can't accept these 3 points, then get 85/1.4 IS. If you can, than 85/1.2 II L will be your favourite lens :)
I've owned all three, and the new 1.4 is my favorite. Not quite the same bokeh as the 1.2, but you still get 3D effect, and its speed, IS, and weather-sealing is just no contest. Way more versatile.
The f/1.8 will do me just fine thanks. Until I get a full frame, the Canon 50mm STM f/1.8 on my Canon 80D gives me 80mm with the 1.6x crop factor. WINNING 🤗
The f1.2 bokeh cutoff is caused by the mirror box. Happens with the 70-200 f/2.8 and 50mm f/1.0/f1.2, and 85mm f/1.2. Gets worse when stopped down, sometimes the bokeh get "cut off" so much that they disappear.
I tried the 85mm f/1.4L IS USM the other day on my 5D4 and fuuuuck me was it a sharp lens! And the IS really helps a lot. It's a real tough choice between getting sharp glass with IS and a creamier bokeh lens that's less sharp but a 1/3 of a stop faster.
Throw the weakest macro filter on the f/1.8 and you might lose infinite focus, but you gain bokeh even smoother than the f/1.2, and you can focus from closer. Albeit your focus might be limited to only 5ft or so, but that's more than enough for closeup portraits and of objects. If you can get an even weaker filter than a 1x diopter, then you can stretch this out to where you lose infinite focus but you keep half the focusing distance, so can still focus from several meters or more. It actually makes doing 3D pop images really easy, you can make almost anything 3D pop.
Hopefully this comment will help someone: I use the 85 f/1.2L II frequently for photojournalism and even sports beginning with my 5DIV walking the streets during festivals. Even with subjects approaching towards me (assuming they weren't within 8 feet/very close) the 5DIV could still keep up and nail focus on the eye at 1.2. But not that I've got a second body, the 1DXII, this lens (and the Canon Super Teles) are the only lenses that will actually physically focus faster on the 1D bodies due to the larger battery. Not speaking on accuracy, just AF motor drive rate from infinity to MFD,
That feeling when you're clicking through product reviews and a Kai W video shows up. CRANK THE SPEAKERS AND FEEL THE CARESS OF HIS GOLDEN VOCAL CHORDS.
I believe I read about the cut-off bokeh on extremely fast primes. I think the flat sides produced by the 1.2L are caused by the mirror box in the camera. The aperture is literally larger than the sensor well.
You should do the king of bokeh vintage lenses. "The Old Guard." Helios 44m-4 for the cheap option, Summicron 50 for the middle, then the Canon 50 .95 for the luxury option. I would love to see how you would put all that together.
Personally I prefer my bokeh balls to be a little more prominent. The f/1.2L's bokeh just looks like it blends away into the background and isn't as visually apparent. Compared to the f/1.4L where the bokeh is a lot more in your face (in a good way). Maybe it was just the fact that you were shooting during the day, and it might look better in a night setting. Just my 2 cents on the matter.
True if you are not pro making living on photography then 1.8 is plenty good and a fifth of the cost even cheaper on used lens , save yourself over $1000 .
@4:14 That clip right there, where Kai show the focusing speed. Was the deal breaker for me when it comes to the 1.4 over the 1.2 because of my candid event photography style.

Hmm, I looked at your review before, and after some careful pondering I think im going to agree with you Kai. Round balls are nice but I think I prefer the subtleness of the 85mm 1.2 even though the base of the balls are chopped off. Having balls that distract to a photography rookie like myself is kinda distracting. My father had an Ashi Pentax with 50 or 55mm 1.4?? or 1.2 Takemar lens which had the kinda bokeh I prefer. Smooth dreamy buttery like bokeh.
Kai, serious question, not related to the BOKE, but... when are you filming and using another people image on your yt channel, do you ask for his image right? Like sign to a paper and something? thanks
Digital Rev kind of died when you left, cool stuff you make these days! 85mm L 1.2 is legendary, but really a funky business.... Instant focus inaccuracy, and dead AF motor made it pretty useless. I bought the 85mm 1.8, and Im pretty happy, every shot in focus, and quite sharp with great boKeH... also not to mention the 135mm L, wish is just a stunner of a lens. Will though hardly consider this 85mm 1.4, IS is really making this lens tempting.
I'd love to see the new Canon compared to the Sigma 85mm f1.4. Is the IQ significantly different to justify the price difference? Does the IS make a huge improvement?
Well timed! Just bought the 85mm 1.8 second hand, really disappointed though! its very noticeably less sharp than my 50mm 1.8 across the aperture range and the purple fringing is massive on the 85mm! Recon I have a tired lens or is this to be expected ?
kai i have kinda question kinda thinking side if i have APS-C and i put 50mm f1.8 on it that well reproduce to me 80mm with the price of the 85mm f1.8 am i right what the con and pos of this thinking
I'm a beginner and I'm picking up the 85mm 1.2 left by my dad on a cropped body. Is it too tight? Is the quality and details of the picture just as good? Probably would be getting a 70D or 80D
You gotta review the Mitakon 85mm f1.2 or 135mm f1.4 if you get the chance. Mitakon actually makes some pretty great glass and it saddens me how underrated they are.
How does a effective aperture of less then 1.0 look? I think Speedbooster on BMPCC can reach up to 0.74 or something on the tiny sensor.... So you end up with a shallow depth of field(like a 4.5 on large format plate camera maybe?) And good performance on lower light for 180° shutter.

Huh that red ring sure looks sweet *looks at price* And gold it is!

I know im late. Red ring on canon lens = flagship lens?
@@srr1887 Yes🙌🏾
I actually think I'd prefer the 1.4.
85mm 1.2L on a canon 5Dmk3 is great for portraits though agreed not the fastest out the box, but portraits are best taken with patients.
What a perfect time this video was made, I was looking for a new lens with awesome bokeh. Thank you Kai, King of Bokeh.
Which lens did you end up getting? I’m debating the 1.4 canon versus the new RF 1.2 version. I’m trying to find folks who have used the 1.4 version adapted to the new RF cameras
1.4 all the way
Ezra Games gotta get that stabilisation
I aswell like to keep my balls intact and stable.
Pancake day lens review should be about pancake lenses
And after 1 pancake day we would have seen all of them. Well, the ones that matter.
As a canon shooter, it's my dream to own one of the 85 L's. The 1.4L seems to be a lot of pro photographer's go-to. Sigma's 85 is also very promising!
4:46 Peter Mckinnon?
Can’t watch Digital Rev anymore had to come here. Just ain’t the same without Kai, Lock and Alamby
they were a really good and cute team :(

Yeah, DRTV sucks ass. the trio made it what it was. Now it's a steaming pile of garbage.
When did they leave?

i have a fear of the spikes of umbrellas :D
I got stabbed in the eye by an umbrella spike on the streets of Madrid. It was shocking.
My mom‘s dog does too!
7:18 I don’t like my Balls being Cut Off..😂😂
11/10 IN SHEER FILTH!! THAT BACKGROUND DESTRUCTION IS NASTTYYY
Just got the 1.4 excited to get my hands on it!
"You're probably asking what is pancake day."
Every day I look into the mirror.
Don´t be so hard on yourself...
Your fat?
The bokeh from the 1.2 under the balls towards the end is awesome. That's a beautiful background!

I love my EF f1.2. The bokeh that is achieved with that lens is unbeatable.
That was a decent review! Didn't expect it to be that serious, actually it was a good balance of humor and useful info.
Awesome review kai I'll always respect your reviews!

I presume you mean "NOW that I've got a second body", right?
I was convinced on the 1.4 until I saw the bokeh tests
Same. Nothing Beats 1.2 for me. Plus better low light performance
But isn't mirror box bokeh clipping problematic with city lights and whatnot?
Yo that was a major vlog upgrade in regards to style, video is looking awesome!!!

Quality content as usual
I believe I read about the cut-off bokeh on extremely fast primes. I think the flat sides produced by the 1.2L are caused by the mirror box in the camera. The aperture is literally larger than the sensor well.
You didn't test pancake lenses...
gasdive watch his new video
Brandon Gooding nice video! I thought my 40 pancake would be my favourite lens for all the reasons he gave, but I always end up carrying the 16-35.
You should do the king of bokeh vintage lenses. "The Old Guard." Helios 44m-4 for the cheap option, Summicron 50 for the middle, then the Canon 50 .95 for the luxury option. I would love to see how you would put all that together.
HELP!!! Witch lens would give me better results in LowLight, 85mm 1.2 or Tamron 1.8 with stabilization?
This is a fan since digrev, you are doing great reviews, go ahead.
Your vids are unique Kai. Been watching since the DRTV days. This one was hilarious! Bokeh balls indeed. :-)
Pancake day without testing of pancake lenses? The world has gone to hell...
My Thursday just got a whole lot better!
Personally I prefer my bokeh balls to be a little more prominent. The f/1.2L's bokeh just looks like it blends away into the background and isn't as visually apparent. 1.8 is still an amazing lens........just sayin'
Most definitely is!
Just bought one yesterday... :)
True if you are not pro making living on photography then 1.8 is plenty good and a fifth of the cost even cheaper on used lens , save yourself over $1000 .
Happy Chinese New Year Kai, Gong Heii Fatt Choy!
1.8 is my baby!
if you cannot afford 1.2 or 1.4 1.8 is still godlike

So amazing King Kai! And the new Board... I'm dying!!!
Yes, 1.4 looks amazing.
Fantastic comparison video!

I, personally, would prefer a 'Gold ring' to a 'Red ring', any day of the week! Ouch! :) Takumar 55/f1.8 < BOKEH without the BROKE! :) A nice, informative video. Thanks Kai!
I found that the 85mm f/1.8 had back focusing issues that weren't easily fixed via microadjusting since it would vary depending on focusing distance.
Ohhhh myesssss This makes me excited! For the future of canon lens galss formats yaaaaa
I am not interested in photography but i'm watching for his sense of humor...just for fun. Nice!
I love this guy Kai.
Love my gold ring, does the job for me
chris eastty what is the difference between gold and red?
Saren red rings a L lenses, usually cost more, gold “cheaper”
chris eastty whats like the actual differences though? Like why might the red one be better?
Saren red L lenses are typically sharper, faster and weather sealed
Hmm, I looked at your review before, and after some careful pondering I think im going to agree with you Kai.
Round balls are nice but I think I prefer the subtleness of the 85mm 1.2 even though the base of the balls are chopped off.
Having balls that distract to a photography rookie like myself is kinda distracting.
My father had an Ashi Pentax with 50 or 55mm 1.4?? or 1.2 Takemar lens which had the kinda bokeh I prefer.
Smooth dreamy buttery like bokeh.
I want to replace my 85mm 1.2 with the newer 1.4!
James Young Photography why
Same here....the autofocus on mine is really of at times
85 1.2 is just a bit old. i want the newer glass.
Get both if you can afford them. The1.4 joins, but doesn’t replace the 1.2. Kai showed this well in this video.
Kai, serious question, not related to the BOKE, but... when are you filming and using another people image on your yt channel, do you ask for his image right? Like sign to a paper and something? thanks
The tossers joke was hilarious!
Kai, I notice you don’t use lens filters. Any opinion on them? Useless and not worth the money?
Hi, could you tell us what camera you are using for filming this review? Tks in advance
Digital Rev kind of died when you left, cool stuff you make these days! 85mm L 1.2 is legendary, but really a funky business.... Instant focus inaccuracy, and dead AF motor made it pretty useless. Do you think that the f1,4 would be fast enough for sports???
Why does the 85mm 1.8 look like 85mm 1.4 non-L lense?? Did Kai compare the wrong lense?
I didn't want to be one of screaming obsessed fans...so I observed you from afar like a stalker fan.
Good stuff mate. Keep up the quality work.
All the photos are un edited right?
I'd love to see the new Canon compared to the Sigma 85mm f1.4. Is the IQ significantly different to justify the price difference? Does the IS make a huge improvement?

hey kai
maybe you could do a photoshoot trip (kind of a vlog) that wold be fun
kai i have kinda question kinda thinking side if i have APS-C and i put 50mm f1.8 on it that well reproduce to me 80mm with the price of the 85mm f1.8 am i right what the con and pos of this thinking
I'm a beginner and I'm picking up the 85mm 1.2 left by my dad on a cropped body. Is it too tight? Is the quality and details of the picture just as good? Probably would be getting a 70D or 80D
Hi Dude. What camera do you use in this video to shoot yourself?
Hi which camera best for filming Canon 77D or Canon 6D Mark 2
Great lens, but a chunky price tag. I reviewed the 50mm 1.8 stm on my channel, which is a steal if your looking for a good lens on a budget.
You gotta review the Mitakon 85mm f1.2 or 135mm f1.4 if you get the chance. Mitakon actually makes some pretty great glass and it saddens me how underrated they are.
How much do normal people actually care about king bokeh Vs decent bokeh?
they don't notice it like us, but they like the king bokeh pictures better
I thought the 1.2 lens were to be tested mainly on night scenes ?
How does a effective aperture of less then 1.0 look? I think Speedbooster on BMPCC can reach up to 0.74 or something on the tiny sensor.... So you end up with a shallow depth of field(like a 4.5 on large format plate camera maybe?) And good performance on lower light for 180° shutter.
Came across this again, because I'm considering an 85mm lens for my Sony A7RIII. Is it worth adapting an 85mm f/1.2 to this body?
