I don't think it's fair for any Lea fans to be salty about Samantha performing this. Samantha is great in this role and frankly, she's a 2nd generation Eponine, when Lea was moved into the Fantine role so they shouldn't be compared, else Les Mis dies with original castings. That doesn't help longevity of something magical like Les Mis. And i'm saying this as a huge Lea AND Samantha fan!
I remember rooting for Samantha Barks during her early days in I'd Do Anything, and was gutted when she was voted off. I have followed her since, and she has the position in my heart as my favourite incarnation of Eponine. She is just phenomenal! :)
I saw her perform this role on the West End, and her artistry and talent can't be captured by just a video, or a solo performance, or even a movie adaptation.
On my own Pretending he's beside me All alone I walk with him till morning Without him I feel his arms around me And when I lose my way I close my eyes And he has found me In the rain the pavement shines like silver All the lights are misty in the river In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight And all I see is him and me forever and forever And I know it's only in my mind That I'm talking to myself and not to him And although I know that he is blind Still I say, there's a way for us I love him But when the night is over He is gone The river's just a river Without him The world around me changes The trees are bare and everywhere The streets are full of strangers I love him But every day I'm learning All my life I've only been pretending Without me His world will go on turning A world that's full of happiness That I have never known I love him I love him I love him But only on my own
I agree. I still appreciate this arrangement. But I liked the 25th version of her singing it better. Not her fault, she killed it each time, I just prefer the different arrangement.
@@rorenmariechin i think lsa salongas version at the 10th anniversary is the most technically sound performance of on my own, and her technical skill is her strength in general. That said, i like Samantha Barks version a bit better. Lea plays her a little more defiant and Samantha's eponine is a bit more volunarble and resigned to her fate, which i believe has a bit of a more emotional sadness to it.
You can tell that shes doing the song in her own version (not copying Leah's style (broadway)). I'ts the ballad song with less emotion!). It is not eponine..it is Samantha. Good on her. !!
I can see why she didn’t sing like this In the movie. She is way better than Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway combined. She’d only put them on whatever side messieur thernadiér is on ( btw Russel Crowe is the best Javert besides Philip Quast )
this is more of a broadway/musical setting where she is free to sing as emotionally as she wants. the movie version was cut for time/edited heavily/ subject to the whims of the producers
If she’d sang like this in the movie,it would have made everyone else look bad . And Samantha wanted to seem more like a weak and fragile young woman. And also the creative team wouldn’t let her
I actually loved her performance of On my Own in the movie. She was directed to refrain from hitting her power spike so as to not overshadow the "stars" of the movie, which makes it that much better since she still overshadowed them on raw emotion. The overacting and poor singing from the "stars" made the movie a bit cringy at times. The other redeeming actor in the movie was Colm Wilkinson as the priest - hmm, imagine that, another stage alum.
@@jacobnyhart6862-Me too. From the movie, the best. She sang it like she had been there. It so fully & completely represented how it feels when you meet 1 who feels like your soul-mate, & the depth of broken heart it leaves you with when they are lost from you, in a world that never even notices.

Samantha is always an awesome Eponine! Her voice is stunning and powerful!
and for shallow people like me it sure doesn't hurt how nice she is to look at. :-)
Finally, a video of Samantha singing On my own that hasn’t been flooded with salty Lea fans
Are you a salty Samantha fan?
@@chamexx4797 OP has a right to be salty considering almost every video of Sam is flooded with comments about Lea.
Love both Sam and Lea, two favorite Eponine's.

Lea was a bad Eponine. She’s a good singer but she doesn’t capture her character at all.
One of the most beautiful piano accompaniments ever written for this song

5 years ago from Les Mis 2012, yet Samantha’s Eponine is still on point 👌
Been a big fan since "I'd do anything" she's incredible! Love Sam so much
Samantha barks is my all time favourite actress and singer and les mis is my favourite film so this just works so well and I'm so happy she's eponine!
This lady is amazing. She IS Eponine.
I saw her perform this role on the West End, and her artistry and talent can't be captured by just a video, or a solo performance, or even a movie adaptation.
My chills have chills 🥶
She is phenomenal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The pianist at 2:50 kills me xD
classically-trained, mouth-breathing pianist
Her voice is the best, her look stunning, she should be a superstar. Maybe to much class for that
On 1.25 its a bit more like the original.
She's absolutely amazing either way.
A true Angel....
Simply awesome
That FREAKING MIC
Samantha is brilliant as always
I love Samantha
everything is soooo beautiful!!!
really awesome!!!!
Wow.
Wow.
Just WOW
Shes the best - on my own dream girl and i know she loves him but... shes the best... and all others know it too
Love it
Incredible
It's even more powerful live than on the movie
Lovely version.
Perfect!!!! Did a little cover...
WHAT OMG OMG OMG

I love him
But when the night is over
He is gone
The river's just a river
Without him
The world around me changes
The trees are bare and everywhere
The streets are full of strangers
I love him
But every day I'm learning
All my life
I've only been pretending
Without me
His world will go on turning
A world that's full of happiness
That I have never known
I love him
I love him
I love him
But only on my own
Not a fan of this arrangement of the song, but Sam is the best Eponine ever!
see Lea Salonga
Well, she isn't the best but she is one of the best

Wtf is this version 🤣
nosy breathing
Pitch not on point
No stage presence
Basic white girl performance
Lol
