- Here is a fan made Music Video I made of the LES MISERABLES song "On My Own" featuring Samantha Barks who portrayed Eponine in the musical and the film. I edited clips from the infamous LES MISERABLES 25th anniversary concert as well as clips from the film to best convey the lyrical content of this very emotional song. Enjoy.

She is my favorite Eponine! Her portrayal is real. Even though some like Salongo, I feel Samantha Banks version s so sensitive and speaks from her heart not just a strong voice.
+Mary Leverock Sam's phrasing is fantastic. I like both interpretations a lot. Lea is ideal for stage, and Samantha for the movie.
Mary Leverock, I totally agree with you. Her portrayal seems so sensitive with so much happiness, pain and sadness from deep within her heart as if you actually go through everything with her.
Salonga... It's Salonga... Though I feel people already corrected you since this is an old comment lol
Oh nevermind
Mary Leverock you are ignorant and has zero knowledge of broadway music lol. Every broadway music fan knows that Lea Salonga is both Eponine and Fantine.
I honestly don't know how you can compare the two. Lea is technical perfection, but Sam is pure emotion. Sam's version gives me chills. I feel the hurt. Lea's version I hear all the notes executed flawlessly the words pronounced with precision. It's apples and oranges. Both different both great!
.... you didn't think Lea's rendition is emotional?
That is the dumbest thing I've heard.
Lea's is precise and technical while being incredibly emotional.
Logically, you're basically saying anyone who can sing perfectly isn't "emotional". That's what someone clueless about music would say.
I agree completely... my wife wanted to know why I love Les Mis so much, so we watched the movie... during some songs (mostly anne hathaway's and sam barks), I just stopped and showed here Rebecca Hall and Lea Salonga... while anne hathaway and sam barks are good (best roles in the movie by far), there is something heartbreaking about the musical performers that can't just be imitated.
@@jjares Samantha Barks is a musical performer. She has played Eponine in the West end and in concert.
Marinette I know, I saw her. Lea salonga is 1000 times better. That was my point. Lea's rendition brings me to tears every time.
@@jjares Then why did you say 'musical performers' as if Samantha isn't literally a musical performer?
God, you Lea fans are so annoying. I wish I had a pound for every time I read her name in the comments section of a SAMANTHA BARKS video.
personally think that she is the best singer in that movie
She's beautiful
thank you for uploading it i love it and have been having trouble finding this performance on youtube
This is really good! You put perfect clips from the movie to go with the lyrics!!
Her voice squeaks during high notes. Her version is more emotional though. Lea's version is clear and her voice is well modulated that even when you turn your volume up, the high notes wont hurt your ears.
+Jett Marion Garcia Sam's going for an emotional effect, so her voice "cracks." but "I have never known" is in her chest voice until the voice cracks at the end.
Lea is the perfect stage crystal clear vocal...as if she has come to grips with reality.
Lea is great but Sam makes me cry.
Amazing!
Aaron Tveit who plays Enjolras also has a musical background!
I have seen all English versions of Éponine, and NONE beat the Spanish version. Seriously. Like I have heard all voices and seen all acting but the Éponine from Madrid 2011 is beyond best than any.
The famous role of the previous diva Lea Salonga, this new generation has been found.
The movie was ok but there is NOTHING like her O2 Anniversary performance of this song. Brings me to tears. Stunning
That's because the tool of a director felt the need to "make it real," by showering Amanda Barks with cold water and recording her on a sound stage when she was singing through a nasty cold and fake rain. One of the worst decision possible to have the stars singing "live" instead of dubbing in numbers that were recorded in a sound studio. Anyone who thinks it wasn't, probably thinks Madonna was actually belting out her Evita numbers on the sound stage balcony sets...or that Olivia Newton John was singing "You're the One That I want" while walking through an amusement park ride. I read the reason he decided not to, was that the cast (all of them besides Amanda) needed the distortion of the live set to cover up their horrendous attempts at singing. In a clean sound booth, their complete lack of singing ability was impossible to hide...and yeah...YEAH...that includes Anne Hathaway.
I remember when I saw the Les Miserables movie for the first time. I'd never seen Les Miserables before, I didn't know the story, I didn't know anything about it. I'd never heard of Sam before either. The highlight of the movie for me was Sam as Eponine. She's an amazing actress and I love her.
I remember seeing the musical at age 21 in los Angles, around 88-90. I went because I love the history... but left thinking mostly of Eponine. When the 25th Anniversary came out and I heard Samantha belt out on my own, it was that much more powerful.
If you're gonna compare anyone, let's just all agree that any Eponine is better than Cosette! 🙌🏻☺️
She is, by far.
Agree, but just in musical😂
@@Hamadasahi Agreed...ish. Cosette is a very enjoyable character in the book, but I still prefer 'Ponine.
Thank you!! Marius is blinddddd
Cossete!
Samantha's facial expressions and tonal inflections help bring the emotion we are to feel as audience. Incredible performance and interpretation, and I am so glad she was picked for the movie.
I like how you had the song from the 25th instead of the movie. I think that she did wayyy better in the 25th.
Sam made me fall in love for Les Miserables 😢❤
And now I'm all alone again nowhere to go, no one to turn to
Without a home without a friend without a face to say hello to
And now the night is near
Now I can make believe he's here
Sometimes I walk alone at night
When everybody else is sleeping
I think of him and then I'm happy
With the company I'm keeping
The city goes to bed
And I can live inside my head
On my own
Pretending he's beside me
All alone
I walk with him till morning
Without him
I feel his arms around me
And when I lose my way I close my eyes
And he has found me
In the rain the pavement shines like silver
All the lights are misty in the river
In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me forever and forever
And I know it's only in my mind
That I'm talking to myself and not to him
And although I know that he is blind
Still I say, there's a way for us
I love him
But when the night is over
He is gone
The river's just a river
Without him
The world around me changes
The trees are bare and everywhere
The streets are full of strangers
I love him
But every day I'm learning
All my life
I've only been pretending
Without me
His world would go on turning
A world that's full of happiness
That I have never known
I love him
I love him
I love him
But only on my own
Many have played the roll before her, and many will play the role again. Her voice is not as polished and controlled as a young Lea Salonga, but with halting passion and a sad vulnerability, Samantha Barks will always be the true Epinine to me!
bobbyb900 Lea Salonga is Eponine.
@@lionkingerika more talented for sure, but no one has captured the resignation to unrequited love as Sam
@@MrZola1234 every single Eponine understood the resignation to unrequited love that the song evokes, but only Lea understood that it's also a painful hymn of utter and agonizing defeat
@@Dan-gi6tf i think lea came off more defiant than vulnerable. I do understand she is many folks favorite Eponine, but for me Sam plays/sings the character more true to the intent of the role.
Actually, lea has song the song at concerts as an adult and hits the right emotion tone better than she did at the 10th anniversary at Oz.
@@MrZola1234- Defiance, like some who becomes bitter after too many disappointments. Sam's rendition not bitter, remained soft-hearted. Something that is far better. And I'm glad you said the book was like that. I never read it.
I love lea's version too but Samantha's version is my choice, dang i can feel the pain in this song..
I didn't know anything about Les Miserable, nothing. So when I watched the movie, I was not prepared at all for this On My Own scene. I was caught off guard. I cried like a new born baby and it haunts me to this day. So much pain in one song.
This song is a masterpiece.
Samantha sings this beautifully 💕.
The best imop. It is a gorgeous rendition. Beautiful in every way .
At 3:15 I love it when they go up on 'pretending'
So typical. LMAO.
Davey Stoddard Samantha failed on that note
Yes i prefer her version of pretending than the classic on my own
Brings me to tears EVERY time!!!
there there...sheldon's here!
She’s so much better live!!
Why do people have to constantly compare artists who sings this song? Why not simply enjoy whoever sings it for what they bring to it? Some of you people are ridiculous. You probably go through life comparing yourself to others. What a miserable existence. Get yourself.
I don't think so. Of course there will be comparisons made. Lea Salonga set the bar so incredibly high so that is the standard. Art is not like paper towels or any other mundane product, and because not all singer are the same, people will compare and contrast. And it is totally okay to like one version better than the other, even LOVE one and hate another...And it is okay to say you like this one better, you don't have to put other people down for doing so. Trying to make yourself look smart by making other people look dumb speaks volumes about character. :)
bella c. Because Lea owned this song and everyone is trying to copy it
Being compared to Lea Salonga is actually an honor imho, not everyone have the beautiful voice that Samantha Barks have and so not everyone enjoys that kind of treatment lol
I just hope Sam takes it in a positive manner than think of it as a criticism like most of her fans do
People are allowed opinions, why don't you keep yours to yourself then, as that what you advocate. You just made a show of yourself
I love you're video ^_^ but one scene i wished you'd put in is when eponnie was laughing while being spun around by marius when she lead him to cosette. a small clip from the movie. i believe that would make the contrast from happy to sad more vivid i almost cried again from the pain she felt of being the one to love another while knowing they won't love you back. we've all been there thats why we can relate to her so easily,
Her laugh in that scene was bittersweet
Completely agreed. Although I do understand some of the rationale behind the live singing, it did also seem like it was a nice excuse to pull back the vocals of the people who actually have theatrical caliber voices, such as Sam. For me, it also ruined the beauty of a lot of these songs by trying to make the performances more acted than sang. If Sam had been able to perform this song like she does in the above clip, she blows Hathaway out of the water, in my opinion.
She is by far the best Eponine I have seenn and I have seen the show Dozens of times now.
She was one of the better singers in the movie.
If I had a friend that sang like Eponine, we’d be more than friends.
I love the way she sang the song.. So full of emotions. I can feel what she's feeling just by listening to her sing.
Samantha Barks is just perfect! She just sings awesome
Amen! I strongly dislike they toned down Samantha's voice in the movie but especially in this song. She was one of the, if not the best singer in the movie.
Samantha Barks is a fantastic singer... she's perfect as Eponine.
Awww I love this version! It''s so beautifully sung and I love her emotion!
Samantga was also on broadway :O NO WONDER
Im from the Isle of Man. And I'm so proud of her!!!
Bravo! She is gold and my forever Eponine. I can feel her feelings as they are.
Sam is fantastic as Eponine!
This is my theme song
She is amazing!!!
Have you seen the movie?

There are two types of sopranos--mezzo and coloratura. Samantha is a mezzo soprano. In very small chiors mezzos often sing alto. I sang alto in my church choir most of my life and then when I had music therapy at the Veteran's Administration Hospital, I discovered I'm a mezzo. Amanda Seyfried with her super-high voice is a coloratura soprano. When they sing together, Amanda goes high and Samantha takes the lower harmonies, but she's still a soprano.
She is the best!!!
Samantha Barks's version is spectacular but I still have ro say that Lea Salonga's version set the bar so high.
Lea Salonga has been shown for the epitome of mediocrity that she is by all who have played Eponine since and none of them had to get on their back or knees to get the role.
Isle of Man forever! 🇮🇲
I love her. 😍😍😍
Great video! This is by far my favourite version of the song; nice editing too :)
Samantha Barks IS a GODDESS !!!
Not a bad rendition at all!
But nobody can sign this song like Lea Salonga.
I like her voice~ but not the way she delivers this song (her phrasing, to be exact), especially in the movie.
great edit of clips. emotion levels are up! :D
She is awesome.
she died to save her love... life is unfair
Great job on this video. Really captures Eponine's torment. I hope Samantha Barks makes more movies, she is divine.
i think it's part of the fact that it's a movie. she has to be crying and filled with agony, i don't think it would sound as real if her voice was perfect, i'm actually glad she doesn't sound as good. it makes her voice sound particularly heartbroken.
i rlly love Sam and lea's version
さまんさばーくすエポほんとに尊い
Samantha Barks is just awesome!
Brilliant preference. Goosebumps!
My god! What voice! It's so beautiful *o* I love her! I love Eponine! This song is for much one of my favorites.
When you know her Eponine and Lea's Eponine were the same.
Kenzo Castillo Lea’s Eponine is better technically. It’s only Lea who understood that the song is a song of defeat. Sam sounds great but technically, she failed to bring the emotion on some lines especially on that part I love him at the end. Lea’s is perfection.
@@lionkingerika can we go *one* video of Sam without comparing her to Lea? They're both amazing, we shouldn't compare them
All the women who had unrequited loves end up dying. Much too be said about the easern philosophy that love is the greatest evil to mankind...
Lea Salonga version is way better

Good decision going with the audio from the musical. She had to hold back in the film so as not to show up to hollywood types. It didn't do her justice.
I didn't necessarily mean that the music people toned her down, they probably had her (and all the other musical singers) "tone" down their singing so they didn't "over" sing the parts. Like tomincmh put it, they had the singers probably "pull back the vocals".
Samantha Barks=Eponine!
歴代エポニーヌの中でも秀逸!
She is Eponine! :)Her performance is bettter than Salonga's version.Sam has passion and transmits truly emotions. She is awesome! :')
+Lucero Vega tell me youre joking.. lol
Really? Yah sure about that ?
Its her opinion, let her be
+Lucero Vega I think exactly as you
her version made Eponine look pathetic and weak which I think is a disgrace considering Eponine was far from being like that.
My favorite Eponine ever
i'm probably gonna get a lot of hate/disagreement here, but samantha barks is much better than lea, & i will go down for my opinion so come at me
레아 살롱가가 부른 온 마이 온은 있어도 뛰어 넘을 온 마이 온은 없다
I LOVE SAMANTHA!!
AND EPONINE!!
I really do love her part. I relate to her more than any other les mis character except the unhappy part of jean valjean

Nice job!
I bet we see a lot more of Samantha Barks in years to come.
Lea salonga still the best
Eponine is the best girl in both the show/movie I've thought that she has out classed Cosette every since I was 5 years old and that's going back over 25 years ago now. When I was younger I remember I used to believe I was her, My Life Threatening Illness Being The Fact That She's So Poor.
I actually tear up every single time I listen to her song this
A few years before the movie came out, there was a video on RUclips of Sam's 25th anniversary version on my own. It doesn't come up now. Anybody have a link to an unedited video of that version?
Given all the comparisons of Lea to Sam, interesting note. I saw a video of Lea from a video celebrating Philapina women. Lea sings the song different form her original version. and I think captures a bit more of the vulnerability of the character like sam does here.
Sam is Northern England. Lea is NYC. Both are cool relatively speaking
When you listen to this you don't give one care about Colette.. Ebonine is the legend of Les Miz 🙌
real talk, she's notcas good as solanga, but she changed it up to a tone i catch myself repeating 100%
Love les miserable, especially this song. Never has been a good Cossette, why?
She shows sooo much emotion I love it she is my role model
0:21 Just as well Samantha was lucky enough to take part in the live-action Les Mis after appearing in quite a few broadway productions of it.
Samantha es la mejor, gracias por el vídeo!
Great & beautiful video! And the song...
Love it ♥
Very well edited. Feels very professional.
Yo creo que Samantha trasmite todo eso y me gusta mucho más que Lea (que tambien es buena) :) pero bueno, opiniones distintas
she has an amazing voice
i love her :))
0:30 "Samantha Banks"
Carlos Giovanni Salvatori I've been scrolling to see if my eyes were just blurring from premature tears or if it really said that.
Its like the voice is coming out to her nose not in the diaphragm i think?
Still sounds good
Both women were excellent singers but as good as Anne was, Sam came out stronger with a more heart felt song. Sam should have at lest received a nomination considering that she was in more of the movie. One more thing, they needed to find people who could act AND sing, so in that regard, they chose well.
The film didn't hold her back.. Cinematic and Broadway performances are too quite different kinds of performing. They will never replace each other, nor compare to each other. The movie did not hamper her, but let act as Eponine in a new way. : ) (Same applies with all the characters converted from Broadway to movie theater) : )
