Adding this here since some people don't know. This is not lip synced. They are singing live and it is recorded live. Samantha talks about that in an interview, how she hoped they would edit out the sniffles, etc. but they didn't. She did about 20 some takes and it was freezing too, BTW. She was listening to the piano through an earpiece. The pianist was off camera in a soundproof booth and was to follow her lead as she sang it as she felt it. The piano was to give her something to focus on. Later, they added in the full orchestra, or what of it they wanted to add. There is also a feature about that. The director is actually conducting the orchestra to fit the way she sang it. All of the singers did this except one or two...and a couple of instances where groups were singing together. So it is "dubbed" in a way, but backwards. What you hear is what she is singing BUT the backing orchestra is what is dubbed in.
I heard director intended for scene to be in a condition that would create sniffles etc, to bring authenticity to the physically emotional response from the actress. Great work you feel for her pain.
Actually if you apply this song to book Éponine, it becomes much, much more tragic. Book Éponine was horrifically emaciated, withered through years of poverty, malnourishment and abuse, mentally unstable, and quite simply creeped Marius out. She was no Sam Barks - she was an ugly, desperate, sick, half-crazy girl who no one can save, and no one can love. Her 'love' for Marius is more ambiguous, because it's as much love as a coping mechanism for her depression and poverty. She reaches for that love because it's the sole good thing in her otherwise completely hellish life. Marius was an escape, an ideal for her, but one can even say that the two never ever understood each other. Her mental instability also lends a new interpretation to phrases like 'he is gone, the river's just a river' etc, as they could be interpreted as actual hallucinations instead of daydreams.
Exactly, I couln't have said it better. And yet, that malnourished, poor, abused, unstable, creepy and miserable girl, by wanting so hard to be loved, has helped Marius to find happiness. It's such an incredible character, she has a wonderful development in the book.
The genius of "Les Misérables", is in the fact that EVERYONE is miserable: miserable in work, miserable in life, miserable in politics, miserable in the army, and yes.. miserable in love. Eponine's misery is so palpable to anyone on this planet who sought love. We have all been there, and we have all sung this song.

Now if you think about it, Emily and Eponine are kinda similar. Like they both have a one sided love over a boy who loves another woman. Much to think about.
She just couldn't understand that love can grow to care for more than one person. Her obsession made her miserable and missing out on the other men in the college within her social circle.
Eponine represents the love one still can have for life when life doesn't loves you back. Thou still a tragedy in the final song the words "to love another person is to see the face of god" mean to show the right actitud towards the tragedy of life
Eponine and Cosette basically trade roles. As a child Cosette sings Castle on a Cloud and now Eponine sings On my Own. Cosette as a child's fantasy was to have a mother figure hugging her, Eponine fantasy was to have Marius around her.

This is my favorite scene. The song, the emotions ... Samantha Bark's singing and acting generally. The sequence, frames, camera movement, lightings etc are just a plus. @Elizabeth Brightmoon I guess i'm stuck in the endless void known as the friendzone. But to be honest, i prefer being friends, going the extra step may have ruined the friendship me and her built up over the years. so all in all, i think it went pretty good.
@@SnooSnoo503 aw I'm so sorry man. at least she at least knows how you feel and you don't have to keep it in always just wondering what could have been :(
It could be worse. In high school, I wrote a love note to a boy who wasn't interested in me. He treated it as something to laugh at. It hurt at the time, but now I think I was better off without him.
The movie doesn't give any development to anything, Marius and Cosette originally knew each other for much longer but here it's only a few days, and Eponine is more likeable in this also due to lack of character development, in the book she treats Cosette horribly when they're kids
It's interesting how it seems that people love this or hate this. I love it. Personally, I think the imperfections are what make it perfect. Her character is in a deep state of suffering, bordering on sobbing. She sounds exactly how she is supposed to.
I' m not a fan of musicals, but this speaks to me volumes and is all. Absolute. Start watching as a joke, a favour to people who like it, and cry my eyes out. makes absolute sense. This part, here, encapsulates existence. Side kicking my eyes out to this brilliant performance. Outstanding. Life.
If you think about it she never had a good family to begin with, her baby sister is not in the movie but she's used just as cosette later on. Gavroche was disowned and she usually prefers to stay outside because she herself hates her own family. Then she sees this other person who has the same ethics and morals as her and though they don't talk much, she pretends that they are best friends, and eventually she falls for him, but he's fallen for cosette and that literally breaks her, seeing the person she hated being the one he loves and she blames herself too. It's appalling her final resolution of dying just leaves her happy because for the first and last time she won't pretending being in marius arms.
Yeah. Fantine’s story is tragic but it feels very removed from the average viewer. Meanwhile most of us know how unrequited love feels even if we don’t have eponine’s terrible home life. But then again a lot of people (myself included) have used crushes as an escapism the general shittiness of life. Unhealthy coping mechanism but it’s relatable
Don’t think we should compare both and say which is worse than the other, they both suffered in such a painful way and are actually the most tragic characters that there is even a mashup of their songs together, a world that’s full of happiness that they have never known. :(
The most relatable song in musical theatre I'm afraid

@@jbvader721tay-tay would’ve never did this justice Im sorry
@@nightmeowonelmstreet215 Nope.
@@jbvader721 wait it turns out Taylor did audition but she knew she wasn’t getting it and just got cats as a compensation
Samantha Barks carrying the entire Les Mis single handedly
Idk shy but this gives the same vibes as that song from Corpe Bride. "I know that I am dead. But it seems that I still have some tears to shed."
Now if you think about it, Emily and Eponine are kinda similar. Like they both have a one sided love over a boy who loves another woman. Much to think about.
My favourite number from the movie version, absolutely crushed it. The fact it was sung live with such emotion was award worthy
If there is ever an anthem for unrequited love, this would be it
Such heart-wrenching emotional commitment and truth in this performance. The gold standard.
Anne Hathaway and Samantha Barks performances were incredible.
Eddie singing Empty chairs at empty tables was amazing too
I'm going through something similar and I just wanna hug her and tell her she deserves the world
Samantha Barks sounded amazing in this movie; She deserved a lot more recognition.
absolutely love the beauty and sorrow in the song🥺
"Without me his world will go on turning" felt that❤
'The river's just a river...' Always makes me bawl. Don't know why.
Her love and emotion broke my heart.. Seeing her pain made me cry!
can we just appreciate how the instrumental fits so well with the vocals?
im 100% sure this is the same set used for Harry Potter
Well... they did use the same studio
It actually is
@@lewisnorth1188 Wait, really? I thought that was a joke!
@@shifra1967 no, they hand-built the set, but probably the same studio.
Ah, the corner at the beginning was Fred & George’s shop
This is what love is. Wanting the best for someone even if they don't care for you.
She just couldn't understand that love can grow to care for more than one person. Her obsession made her miserable and missing out on the other men in the college within her social circle.
i dont think ive ever cried harder than when i first saw this. whole movie is amazing
i do love this version of this song, but having heard her sing it live?? my god she is incredible!!!
This song just sealed Samantha’s power. She was so robbed of an Oscar nom.
I feel sorry for Éponine, I was crying during this scene. 😭
Eponine represents the love one still can have for life when life doesn't loves you back. Thou still a tragedy in the final song the words "to love another person is to see the face of god" mean to show the right actitud towards the tragedy of life
My absolute favourite version of this song. She has a beautiful voice.
watched this in a theater with my date in Bangkok 2013. Memorable moment.
Her “I love him”s at the end 😭
Gets me in the feels every time!
We have all developed feelings for someone we know does not feel the same way back. :(
What emotion she projects in this song. You can feel the sadness she's going through...... Samantha is the best Eponine I've seen. Amazing!
No one does this better. She is so suited to play this part.
Lol she is good but let's be real here, Lea does it better
@@ragiingtomato14 you dont feel the emotion and pain when lea sings, dont get me wrong I think shes great but I believe that Samantha is better
Eponine and Cosette basically trade roles. As a child Cosette sings Castle on a Cloud and now Eponine sings On my Own. Cosette as a child's fantasy was to have a mother figure hugging her, Eponine fantasy was to have Marius around her.
alternatively, this is how i'd sing about eddie redmayne too
me too dude me too

my psycho English teacher made us do about 15 hrs of assignments on this one song. I had to listen to it SO MANY TIMES that it still rings in my ears to THIS DAY. some teachers really have a way of making you hate learning.

goodbye, my Disney Prince. 💔
Aragorn: "It is but a shadow, and a thought that you love..."
"also I'm like 87 years old so..."
Man. I broke up with my GF today. It was one of those break ups where you knew you had to because you just weren’t right for each other, but you could have let it drag on. Now I’m on my own again and this song has been in my head all day 😭.
Sorry to hear that.
This is my favorite scene. The song, the emotions ... Samantha Bark's singing and acting generally. The sequence, frames, camera movement, lightings etc are just a plus. I am not a singer but out of all the music scores, her singing was the best. She was the best in this film. Other's voices were good enough but nothing close to her.
Shivers and tears every time!! Samantha breaks my heart, amazing performance, she is AMAZING!
This is so sad Alexa play do you hear the people sing.
I don’t like how relatable this song is
Samantha barks love you too and love your voice of epoinie in les miserables you deserve of tony award for this.
You know this is a movie right?
I’m a diver, EMS , diesel mechanic, tractor trailer driver grew up in some tough street and
I appreciate her singing
연기를 너무 잘하셔서 볼 때마다 눈물 남ㅜ.ㅜ
the way her voice breaks as she pretends crying while singing is so beautiful...
Me realising my crush will never like me even though I've legit never made a move on her because i hate the feeling of being rejected.
Women hate making the first move, they love it when men make the first move. It also show's confidence and initiative, two traits women find very attractive.

The best Eponine and the best rendition of this beautiful song about unrequited love.
IS IT NECESSARY TO HAVE GOOSEBUMPS EVERY TIME I WATCH THIS?
My favorite character
She’s the only one who actually knows how to sing emotionally without having to cry and gasp for air like Anne. She deserved more .
How about Lea salonga?

This movie was grosly underappreciated.
😢😭😪 I just want to be your friend and tell her she’s lovable and smart and talented, and she deserves peace and happiness
I really hated Marius because of this scene.
The movie doesn't give any development to anything, Marius and Cosette originally knew each other for much longer but here it's only a few days, and Eponine is more likeable in this also due to lack of character development, in the book she treats Cosette horribly when they're kids

She’s not entitled to his love. He didn’t like her like that and he didn’t need to.
Life.
This was my angst song in high school. I had a crush on a boy who wasn't interested in me. This song always reminded me of him.
Fantine story was very sad, but I just can't. Éponine story is so sad... And this scene is so dramatic... and... Nevermind, I'm crying again...
@@priyachoudhary9896 I LOVE your answer ✨
