i've always hated drm for this very reason. i was in the navy for 10 years, so obviously when i was in, for years, it was a deal breaker for me. if i cant play games i own and paid for while i was out at sea, then i wasnt going to waste my money on it. but even here state side, you never know when you internet might go out. or maybe you might find yourself in hard times and have to stop paying for internet for awhile. or in this case, its a portable system. do these companies really think its just ok that you cant access a product you paid them for?

Sadly they do think it’s okay. They make their games require an online DRM to deter people from pirating games. Which doesn’t really work at all and just hurts the consumer. The companies that do this don’t care if the customer don’t have access to it since people keep buying from them anyway.

OK!!! So.... you can absolutely play games on your steam deck offline. Although some games won't (most Rockstar games require you to sign in, in order to save progress). But just about anything else you can download, accept all licenses for the game, and turn your steam deck on Airplane mode/shut off wi fi and be good to go. For some reason nobody can just come out and say YES THE STEAM DECK GAMES CAN BE PLAYED OFFLINE BUT SOME GAMES YOU CANT. How hard is that???

In my humble opinion I think that any single player experiences should not require an active internet connection. For multiplayer games and even more so for MMOs it's completely understandable that active internet connection is required because how else you would play with others.
It's not that I don't understand why companies may want to use DRM. It's to protect their product and their rights. In a long run it will only affect those who own legitimate copies of the games. I assume those who pirate the games have games without the DRM or it's behavior is changed so that it's not doing what it should (because otherwise what would be the point of pirating if DRM was working as intended?), so if the DRM affects legitimate owners but not pirates then why to use it at all? Maybe it could be there just for a month or two after the launch until it loses its effectiveness but after that I don't really see the point of it. To be fair, I've never been much into absolutely having to get games on launch (although I can understand the appeal to some degree), so in that case if there was a month or a few period when DRM was active on launch but later removed then those who don't like it could get the game after the launch period and those who don't mind it but want to play it sooner could get the game at launch.
It's not that I support DRM. As long as it doesn't bother my gaming experience, go too deep into privacy or affect the performance of the hardware then I'm most likely able to ignore it. If it starts affecting some of these in a way that I become aware of it then I definitely think there is a problem. If it is one time check on first launch of the game just to check that the installed game is a legitimate copy then I can accept that. If it prompts me every time for an internet connection on each launch then yeah, there is a problem. I mean, if I already have installed a legitimate copy of the game then why would I suddenly have a pirated copy of the game the next day or the next week?
I'll admit I've used pirated copies of some games in the past but if I recall correctly, that was before I started using Steam for most of my gaming needs. Steam makes it a lot more convenient to get games legally, and various sales around the year makes the prices quite reasonable. Can't afford a game? Put it in your wishlist and wait for a notification about a discount for the game from Steam. In fact I have bought so many games over the years that my problem is not so much lack of games but lack of time playing them.
Anyway, my main point is that I hope Valve can come up with something that makes the offline experience on Steam Deck even better and better for the customers. I don't expect all the game companies to remove the DRM from all of their games completely but it would be great if they could find a solution that satisfies both the gamers and the game companies.

I heard of some users who got logged out of their steam deck and couldn't essentially use it because it sepnt too long in offline mode, would be nice to have a confirmation on this aspect.
Beside, the issue with GOG is that it doesn't support offline achievements, so even if you go through the hassle of installing those games through galaxy launcher on the steam deck, you would have to be connected to the internet to log them.
Anyway since I bought the steam deck, I discovered how much of an hassle DRMs are, as opposed to the experience I had with my other portable devices like the PSP and PS Vita, so even if I cannot get offline achievements with GOG, I try to buy my game there when available, even just for the sake of having an offline DRM free installer, as many of the games available on gog are DRM free even on steam.

DRM is here to stay. No doubt about it. For good reason. It protects the developers and distributors who fund the games we play. Steam Deck - like any other system - needs to be connected to the internet “most” of the time. So Steam will likely use similar DRM checks as what we see in the SVOD industry to name only this example. Meaning a game can play offline for a time until it “checks-in” with Steam to validate authenticity after a while. It’s not a perfect system - but it’s the one generally accepted in the broader Entertainemnt industry at present. Live with it people or don’t buy a Steam Deck or do and turn to the dark side. Choose wisely as the old fart in the Indiana Jones movie would say ;-)

Then we have DRM on consoles like the Xbox Series and GT7 on the PS4/PS5
Closed platforms where piracy is very close to 0 so DRM shouldn't be needed
In those cases DRM is more about control than reduce piracy (even tho DRM itself encourages piracy because people want to own the games they paid for)
