3rd Party Launchers are worse. There's not that many other recognized/approved/sanctioned Anti-Cheat software beyond the big ones already out there, it mostly affects Multiplayer games, and it impacts a small list of games already identified. In comparison, a 3rd Party Launcher can come from ANY developer and break ANY game, no matter how old or new, singleplayer or multiplayer, on or offline.

Valve could build a Steam based launcher system. Sub-launcher system. So that companies could still advertise their other game to you. But it would all be happening inside steam.
That way the company can have their cake and eat it too. And we get native steam based launchers that should always work on steamdeck.

Anti Cheat is annoying in the games that use it but I think 3rd party launchers are far worse. We're already playing on steam which is DRM in itself, so company's really need to stop with the extra launcher requirements. Steam jsn't DRM and Valve says so in their developer articles. Even though Steam provides some sort of API you can use that works like DRM, Valve themselves admit it's very rudimentary and can be circumvented with no effort using a Steam emulator, for example.
That's presumably the reason many developers choose to go with additional DRM.

Like with some you are able to create mod profiles and don't need to uninstall the mods if you want to play without them. I guess if Valve wanted to try the carrot approach, they could reserve space on the game launch screen that publishers/developers could post to. You know when you go to start a game you have that screen with the play button, controls, gear, and under that activity, community, etc. They could add space under the play button where activity and community are now that has a reserved amount of space for publishers to advertise events, other games etc. I'm sure they'd have rules that you cannot advertise games above that games rating, formatting rules, etc.
Obviously, I'd prefer an ad free experience, but a small controlled ad/branding space may be a small price to pay to avoid launchers. This way Valve could also have some control over the content, size, annoyance, etc.

Anti-cheat is worse, because without official support there is nothing you can do. Another launcher is "just" another obstacle that can be solved, while being annoying. Although games like GTA with its launcher don't bother me, because I have nothing else to do, Steam logs in for me automatically and runs it. In contrast to it, I cannot play some of my favorite games because of Anti-cheat and we can't do anything about it other than hope.

    * Valve maintains proton. Proton is a total product that includes wine. Wine is the part that usually needs work arounds (see winehq).
Proton GE is a fork of proton that includes more untested patches or different patches than the official proton.
Valve (co-)funds a lot of these projects.
So yeah, you are right that you will never know who actually worked on it, there are more developers working on this than there are developers writing those launchers.

I don't think either cut option would work.
First of all, increasing the price of games with an external launcher, doing this for existing games probably breaks existing contracts. Doing it for new games might also break contracts, but if it doesn't, it creates a lot of potential for conflict if the publisher has been getting the other rates for their old games. Creating conflicts with people you depend upon to earn money isn't smart business.
On the other side of the coin, there's decreasing the cut for publishers who remove their launchers. You can't do that as an officially known policy. You'd basically have to apply the new rate to any game without a launcher. If you don't, you'll get publishers creating new launchers, so they can remove them and apply. If course your can disallow that, but that one again opens you up to conflict with those who removed their launcher previously or does not have one to begin with. And I just don't see valve reducing their cut on almost all games just to get rid of launchers.
Alternatively, you can make NDA'd deals with large publishers. But I believe the big publishers already have such deals, but about their games being on steam. Giving them another discount is a big concession that I don't think will be worth it if they're only getting rid of launchers.

There is another solution: A SUB STEAM STORE for publishers where they can do their ads, but without adding more ram use for steam versions of their games.
And it would be multiplatform (not only MS WOS) they can keep their stores for MS WOS users, that still want them, and keep the steam version compatible with steam OS, allowing to not upgrade if something is broken, at least util it is fixed.

I play Diablo 3 on Switch for 2 reasons. 1, to avoid the extra launcher. 2, because they don't impose the artificial restriction of always online single player DRM on Switch (and other consoles I believe). Limited compatibility for Linux anti cheat, too many third party launchers, and always online DRM are the things holding Linux and Steam Deck gaming back. Add to the list micro transactions, pay 2 win, and publishers not letting their developers release a game in a non-broken state and you have a good list the problems with modern gaming in general.

The primary reason for most is that Valve takes 30% of the money from the devs and having a storefront where they can get 100% is better. I do agree. But I haven't bought an EA or Origin game for some time now, and the only Epic game I ever launch is a free one. This is a problem for these companies in the long term, they're losing custom because average people like me are having to think strategically before we pull the trigger on a purchase. The convoluted systems companies like Activision Blizzard and Square Enix use to authenticate you are also subject to drift as they alter things, introduce things, take things away over time. The only one I abide is Rockstar with Red Dead Redemption 2, though I loathe it upon every boot of the game. While I don’t love any launcher, including Steam, when I joined the PC gamer world I settled for what I felt was the least evil. I’ve never installed any other game store or launcher, and while I love GOG, I don’t even install their Galaxy software, rather installing my games from GOG one-off instead. With the Deck, I’ve come to appreciate cloud saves, Steam streaming, and other client features, but I still don’t want a bunch of processes cluttering my computer. The fix to this is super simple and i do not see why its not implemented, for example, gta 5 has little to no issues with hacking and its due to rockstar servers and drm being on their end. (I am aware of the rockstar launcher not what i am talking about, this is refering to the drm/anti-cheat issues specifically, a fix for the rockstar launcher is simply get rid of it, its bloatware anyway it is only used to verify your rockstar account this can be moved into the gta main menu when you click online it runs a check and opens a semi login screen) Yes it costs more but its better for the user and longevity of the online of a game. All Steam would need to do is enact a rule stating no launchers or third party non-linux drm allowed on the store. This would upset developers and cause them to spend more money but oh well the consumer would get 100% verified deck games and a way better user experience when buying anything of steam as the peace of mind knowing it will just open is there. This needs to happen.

    Hard question to answer.
Anti-cheat is something that either works or doesn't, and there's nothing you can do about it as an end user. And my impression is that the percentage of anti-cheat games that do work is still very low, practically cutting out Linux and Deck users from entire genres of gaming. That's a big problem, but entirely fixable if the game devs just get off their asses.
3rd party launchers are kind of the opposite. Often you can make them work to some degree on Linux, but that varies and they often break on updates. Aside from that, they are always a bad experience on any platform, an anti-consumer inconvenience that should have died long ago.
So I would say right now, anti-cheat. Long term, launchers.
My solution to both is to just not buy. Anti-cheat is easy - I don't play online games, so I'm not missing anything. Third-party launchers is a little harder. There are games I want to play that require a launcher. It's also hard to know what specific game need a launcher, meaning I just have to blacklist entire publishers. I don't buy anything from Ubisoft or EA. I would like to play some of the Assassin's Creed games, Sekiro, and perhaps Dragon Age. But not knowing which ones do or do not (if any) require launchers, I end up skipping all of them.

I'm happy to have an account with Steam. They've been good to me in both value and customer support. I don't want an account with Ubisoft, Rockstar, EA, etc. Their reputations are terrible for a reason, and their launchers and stores will simply never remotely compete with Steam, no matter how much money and coercion they throw at it.if

I had enough of playing technician every week to start games on a Laptop which can run every game at 4K 60Fps with ease... No point spending thousands of Euros on hardware like this if its a constant pain in the ass because of unoptimized games, driver problems, windows errors, etc...

Just address your demand to the developers/publishers of the affected game so they can take notice. Most of the times it's just a simple patch. Valve took so much effort for the publishers to make it as easy as possible to confirm compatibility to the deck. And if you want to vote with your wallet then at least ASK for compatibility before buying if uncertain. And: The more decks (and possible other machines with steamOS on it) will be sold the less they can ignore us ;)

Game launchers have never been a good idea since their inception. We tolerate them because we have few options or cannot disable them before launching the games. Some can modify the game before launching. That is good for debugging and changing settings that break a contest or have a black window after launching the game. But that could be better optimization from the devs.

I can’t tell you how annoyed I am that I come back to a game that all of a sudden stops working and some random guy on the internet finds a fix with no thanks to developers. I’ve literally had to fix code errors myself to make THEIR game work. They should be treating the steam deck like an Xbox or PlayStation. And continue to patch games instead of leaving them dead on steam.

I think anticheat is still the bigger menace given some of the BIGGEST games in the world don't work and as far as I know, Valve has done all they can. The ball is in these dev's court and some developers are VERY stubborn.
Third party launchers breaking deck compatibility sucks but at the very least, Valve can inevitably fix them.

And of course now I'm a Valve fan boy.

Launchers are the worst because even in a perfect situation they do not always work. I have only ever used Battlenet and Steam's launchers for games. The only reason I've ever even installed another one was to claim a free game I'll never play (like you said in the video). DRM is definitely an issue as well, but it usually gets fixed if there's a blatant issue. Launchers I feel are here to stay unfortunately and can only get worse...not better.
