Or even install directly from the disc without pulling a whole bunch of downloads from their servers. Warez had fewer hoops to jump through.

100% agree. I don't think the idea of a 24-48 hour buffer is unreasonable. We live in a connected world, sure, but there are always reasons to be offline. Remember when driving in the car meant you were away from the internet? I do. We shouldn't have to use a hotspot just to play a game, especially a single player game. Unfortunately, there is only so much Valve can do, especially with games that have 3rd party launchers that do the authentication. Valve has been working on offline mode on their end, but it can't extend to games that have these 3rd party launchers. We and Valve need to put pressure on these other studios to give use the quality of life improvements, and I honestly think we will see it. It might take a few months to a year, but if people won't play your game because they have to have an active internet connection, then they might not play it. That would leave a bad taste in my mouth, and make me not want to start any of these games.
I would say the biggest thing in the PC world is that we haven't had a system like this before. Everything has either been a desktop or laptop, and I would guess that most people wouldn't play the laptop on a plane, for a variety of reasons, battery being one of them. Because of the form factor, price, and popularity of the Deck, it is becoming more mainstream than any of Aya or GPD's offerings, so these issues are now being brought forward. And I think it is interesting that it has taken 6 months after release for this to be a problem. It seems like it just recently hit critical mass on Reddit and now people are talking about it all the time. I would guess it is more because of all of the other things that Valve has been fixing so they became a non-issue, and we finally made it down the line where "Hmm... this thing is actually really great now, but I wish the offline mode worked better..." Maybe people are just starting to travel more now than the first few months, but still, I find it interesting.

We can get cracked versions of just about every game that will run fine offline, but they screw over people who actually pay for the game by forcing them to be online. Unfortunately when it comes to games with third party launchers like Origin, Ubisoft, or Heroic, Valve has zero control over how they handle launching the games when you have no internet. The Steam Deck has an offline mode in the settings and Valve has been working to try and improve the offline experience, but there is only so much they can do when we live in an age where Devs seem to think they all need their own launchers for their games. I think the best way Valve could try and combat this is by punishing devs by rating their games lower on the verification system if their games don't work seamlessly without an internet connection.

It's not a steam or client issue per say, it's more of a developer/publisher issue. While steam has an offline mode, it doesn't mean developers and publishers will honor it. Resident evil 2 when it came out you had to be connected to the internet in order to play the single player, if you were offline, you couldn't play it (they also did this for console too until denuvo was removed). Then you have a games that require an external client beyond the default in order to launch the game.

It was recently fixed with Steam's latest update, but basically even though you would be offline, the game would still think it was connected to the internet and wouldn't let you play the game because of it and in some cases a update option would show even though it's supposed to switch to offline mode. Annoying problem that finally got addressed. So hopefully it's fixed now.

I just don't see how could valve fix the DRM without finantial incentives tbh. I think a possible solution could be that valve gives developers an extra 5% of revenue split per game sold if their game is verified and has no internet connection required if it is a single player /coop game, and if the game is a multiplayer title to get that 5% the game needs to be verified and the anti cheat must support SteamOS. I think it could be a pretty nice incentive for developers to avoid using denuvo or stuff like that but I doubt valve would do it.... but other than that I don't see how valve could fix it, they said they are working on improving tge offline mode but the problem is with the games themselves :/
