There are some screen protectors for the 512gb version, but the ones I recommend should only be used on the 64 and 256gb versions. Thanks for pointing this out. I totally forgot to mention it in the video.
I have the 512 model and a tempered glass protector. It hasn't diminished the screen quality in any appreciable way, and it keeps my screen from being scratched.

The Steam Deck is an amazing device, not only is it a handheld gaming PC, it also can be used as a cheaper alternative to a laptop, like for example a college student could use something like this, get their work done on it in desktop mode and then play games on it in their free time, or they can even dual boot windows 10 or 11 along side steam OS, this little thing has so much potential, really can't wait to get my deck.
One thing that I would add is to open settings/controller/calibration & advanced settings and then adjust your joystick deadzones. The defaults were 8192 for mine and I managed to reduce the left one to around 3392, and the right to 2992 after a few minutes of playing around with the sliders... These numbers will vary for everyone, but basically just lower it until you can move your joysticks in every possible direction by minute amounts so that the middle turns red and then let go until you are sure that it will never stick with the center staying red. This will change with time I guess so just remember that you did it. 😅
hehe, I love the joysticks but the deadzones seemed way too big for me, hopefully others will get similar or better results. It would be nice to have more advanced controls over them, similar to apps like x360ce but you can't hope for everything I guess, and it would probably only be me that would enjoy playing around with it a bit more. 🙃🤓
I’m sure it’s already been recommended several times but I would say a right angle USB-C Adapter. Unless you’re using the stand you can purchase from Valve separately.
Hah, that's the same battery pack/sd cardholder that I'm about to print! I'm guessing it's somewhat popular? I haven't seen any commercial designs that are better. Great vid, thanks!
I just ordered the 512gb one that should be enough to get me through December but after Christmas I buy the same 1TB SD I use on my switch it haven't failed me so far
ARGH! My Order Availability window, according to the official Steam Deck page, is "July-September" - and I just realized that means by the END of September. STILL - I'm checking email every hour or so now... Thanks for the great breakdown of how to set it up when it does arrive!
Emails go out every Monday and Thursday at 10am PST so don’t stress yourself out too much with the email refresh. I reserved April 10 and got my email yesterday :) hope that helps to ease your mind a bit
I was about to say something similar except I was gonna say if you already have the game downloaded on your PC tranfer it over to an sd card. After that you can simply update the games so it will download the necessary files it needs to be able to play them on Linux.
Just got my Steam Deck in. I am gamer and have been since my younger years (over 50) and Steam is new to me. I feel almost overwhelmed as I am use to putting in my game and playing but with the Steam Deck it has not been that easy. I am not giving up as I know PC/Steam has a lot of great games and I just have to slow down and figure out what I need to do to get games to play on my new Steam Deck. I will be following your tips and thank you for making a video such as this. May I ask if you have a video for those of us who are new to the whole Steam Deck/Steam experience? I know, I know baby steps. If such a video exists please let me know as it will be much appreciated. For me, I have made a Steam account and did the updates however I just purchased my first title and it will not play. Sadden as I hoped it would be as easy as downloading and playing (and even picked up the deck so I can play my Steam Deck on the big screen). Looking forward to playing some great games but for now I am just learning how to get this thing to work…LOL.
Welcome to the Steam family! Make sure to buy games that are approved while you get used to the deck. A lot of games keep getting approved, so the game you bought might be playable soon, or you could venture out into Desktop mode and get the eggroll version of proton (the software that makes windows games playable on the deck). I'll see what I can do about creating new to PC/Steam videos
I'm going to get a steamdeck in February as an 18th birthday gift and I will play so much fallout, i used to be a console player and I personally feel that controller for singleplayer games is the best
I have the high end deck coming which I'm very excited about but some of your tips make me anxious, like not even knowing what Proton GE is, or what exactly I should download in terms of apps, or why, or how, considering I haven't even held a Steam Deck yet. So... Thanks for scaring me man :( lol Since it's the 512gb version, I'm not messing with SD cards. Using them on my phone has always ended up in corrupted things so I don't want to mess with them for games. At least the 512gb will launch fast though and I'm not someone who needs a ton of games installed at one time. PS5 only having like 650GB of space in reality and yet I still have like 200GB free, and could probably uninstall 1 or 2 more games lol. So that's one reason I'm glad I got the higher end deck. Don't often need more than a few games installed at once and usually delete after playing and don't usually go back to them, seeing as there are so many great games and I have a huge backlog lol.
If you set your refresh rate to 45 and then try to run emulated games (N64), the sound will be garbled. Set it back to 60 and the framerate limit to off to fix this.
Wow, thanks for this video. I am supposedly going to receive mine in another week or so. I didn’t know I can also play PlayStation games and my Epic games, (and games I downloaded p2p from friends I don’t know)! I have a back injury and I will be out of commission for another few months (pinched nerve and I can’t sit or stand right now (I can walk to bathroom to pee), only lay on my stomach on my bed (lucky I have friends and family to help me with cooking, errands, etc.)), so I can’t play any games on my gaming desktop. I was debating this or the Switch, so I can play laying down, and now I am sooo happy I am getting steam deck. I like to tinker anyway, and I can do so much more than if I would have gotten the Switch (I’m really a PC gamer overall). I can friggin’ game to my heart’s content. These next few months, until surgery to free my pinched nerve, are now going to be sooo much more bearable. I just looked at your other videos on setup, and these will be so helpful. Awesome! Thanks for the info.
Once again games revealed thanks for a great video I just got my email on the 1st and did not see the email until the next day so be vigilant because you only get 72 hours to place your order from the time they send the email if you miss that 72 hour period you forfeit your steam deck so just be on the lookout people. I placed my order for my 512gb steam deck my shipping status is shipping soon I’m so stoked it was $689.43 after tax in Florida in case anyone needs to know how much at checkout in my state anyways as always thanks again Games Revealed love all your content.
Another great tip is to format your SD card with BTRFS. It means your SD card can't be used by windows but BTRFS compresses all files inside in a really, really fast way. This means you can store more games and some games actually will load faster since reading the amount of compressed data has more than enough speedup to counteract any slowdowns from decompressing the files. It's honestly amazing the deck doesn't use BTRFS for your whole storage!
quick question , does this mean I can't use it at all for windows dual boot on the steam deck ( for putting games on) or means you can use it as a boot drive
@@sockbubbles6038 i think he's saying that Windows itself can't read it. Dual booting isn't working yet anyway, it's better to have a separate SD for Windows until Valve fixes it.
@@sockbubbles6038 you can use it as a boot drive. There are some community drivers to read BTRFS partitions and even a custom Windows bootloader to use BTRFS as the boot drive if you wish, but support is experimental.
How do you do this please? I have a 1TB micro SD I formatted in the Steam Deck, but don't remember getting any option about how I format it? Can you do it from within Steam or do you need an extra program to do it? I've already got a lot of games on my card, so reluctant to reformat it, but might if the performance or capacity gains are likely to be significant. How much extra capacity would I be likely to see on a 1TB card please? I'm not bothered about Windows support as I bought the card to use specifically with the Steam Deck.
I have a Tomtoc case that has the handle vs zipper on other side, making the center of gravity opening the case naturally hold the deck. Also I'm paranoid about dropping it, I always open the case flat on table
I read somewhere that the Steam Deck does not implement the SD card A2 feature(A driver on the host manages the IO during read/writes to the A2 cards) and might be slower than using A1 cards. It would be cool if someone did a test with A1 and A2 cards of the same capacity to verify that spending more to get an A2 SD card is worth it.
Read the same thing and it should be very real if it is not changed in last steam OS version, for me best choice which had all other parameters exact right was nintento licensed.
Mouse and keyboard is a lil jank in game mode. FPS like apex legends for example, the mouse emulates a joystick and freaks out. Unsure of a fix apart from running in game mode. if anyone knows how to fix this please give me a shout. Thanks :) Edit: please can you do a tutorial on bottles? I would like to try and run some applications like opera etc, and other games :) Just want to see if it works
Valve should def take this into consideration to fix in gaming mode, but if you’re trying to use a mouse and keyboard set up then why would you do that on gaming mode? Switch over to desktop mode for that stuff , that’s like connecting a keyboard and mouse to an Xbox and mad that’s it a little off or something lol
@@rjfjffn5704 well it was more just pick up and play factor :) plus I did want the gamescope advantage with global fsr and 40hz mode etc if I wanted it :)
Only time it really matters is when you are unpacking the game. You can always download and unpack on the ssd and then move the game to the sd card. I’ve had zero issues playing my games from the sd card so far
I'm still trying to figure out Bottles which can be downloaded from the store. It is by far the EASIEST way to install all of the needed components to run games and it has a launchers sections where you click a button and it takes you through the login and install. I'm still trying to figure out Arch Linux so still fighting with getting how the file system and package install works.
If you are on the Deck, I think you mean SteamOS 3 ? Its based off Arch, but they do a lot different than normal Arch. Learning one will not really translate over, as SteamOS is very locked down, and everything is only installed and run off FlatPaks, which you're unlikely to use much (if at all) with Arch.
You might want to do 50fps instead of 60 because of PAL standards. Some games may have optimized routines for it and, as I can tell, coming from a PAL region, your eye barely notices it, but your bat + gpu will thank you.
Hey! I remember seeing these videos and once downloading a app on discover that would let me change my movie start up to custom ones without messing with files.. just straight downloads.. now I reset and can’t find it.. do you think you can help?
Luckily I was able to afford the 512 and add another 512. Added almost all the games I think I could want on it and still haven’t tapped into the 512micro sd yet so I would recommend just for the extra storage, screen and carrying case. I’ll probably get a bigger bag that can hold a controller and mini keyboard for on the go as well as an extra battery bank.
My problem was when trying to type "Proton GE" the deck would only take the P and then it would overwrite it with each subsequent letter as I typed. Navigation in desktop mode is a PITA. not even going to try again until I get some peripherals.
I just bought a steam deck off of Amazon, but I bought a grip cover a dock, a micro SD and a screen protector. I’m gonna probably buy a few games when I get it Friday next week I’ll probably get some more games another micro SD card, and a power bank.
Lol my steam library is at 420 games and rising, it was around 300 when I got the deck around a month and a half ago, steam knows what they're doing with the deck.
i agree about have lots of game on steam... when i first start steam, i thought i wont be able to buy more than 5 games... now i have more than hundreds... eventhough all of it i buy during sale but slowly it become collection of games...
Hello, how are you? I bought a steam deck and installed the game. It doesn't run. Is it necessary to install programs to run the game like on a computer?
Lifesaver is a great idea, but the new cases are not coming with the straps. Got mine and it was missing, so emailed Valve and was informed of the change :(.
Hi everyone, I’m trying to reinstall deckyloader and Konsole keep saying BOTH ‘sudo password never provided’ AND ‘incorrect password attempt’ every time I try with (‘Decky!’) password or without any password. Any idea anyone ?
Great video. I’m looking forward to Lies of P. But I still haven’t put Windows on my Deck yet so I don’t have access to my Game Pass account on it. Still researching the safest way to do that.
You don't have to install windows to be able to play games via Xbox Game pass. However, without windows you can only stream the games, not fully install them on the deck. In my experience, though, the streaming works fine, it's very playable (tested on No Man's sky with a good internet connection)
Isn't the deck's screen glass? I've been told for years to get screen protectors for glass covered displays and as someone who draws on them all the time with a plastic nib, I've yet to scratch one. Surface Pro 2 and 4, Lenovo and Huion display tablets, samsung galaxy tab 8 Is this somehow different?
Was in Best Buy yesterday and was talking to my bro about the steam deck and some guy overheard us talking and asked me if I wanted to sell him the deck. I haven’t even got the thing yet (should have it by sep. 21st) I’m seriously thinking about selling it to him since he did offer a bit more then what it’s worth. I got the 256gb. Thank you I’m getting my steam deck tonight and this really helped on what I should do
Great vid. You look like friendly version of homelander lol.
this video gonna blow up in a year when people get their steam deck delivered
lay's pringle
Can’t get mine till like a year gonna save all my Christmas money and all till I get 400 dollars then I’ll order mine
Maybe. Mine said Q3 and I was able to purchase it a couple days before Q3 even started.
Same!! Can’t wait 🙌🏻🙌🏻
I literally just got my availability today. So I’m sure you’re soon!
I got mine on the first so you won't be waiting long
Emails go out every Monday and Thursday at 10am PST so don’t stress yourself out too much with the email refresh. I reserved April 10 and got my email yesterday :) hope that helps to ease your mind a bit
Pro tip , download the game on your pc and copy it in the sd card , if you have a good gaming pc that saves a lot of time
I was about to say something similar except I was gonna say if you already have the game downloaded on your PC tranfer it over to an sd card. After that you can simply update the games so it will download the necessary files it needs to be able to play them on Linux.
estimated arrival for my steam deck is tommorow i cant wait
Fight night Champion, Sensible Soccer, Burnout 3: Takedown, Need for Speed: Underground 2, Kerbal Space Program, Blur, Peggle Deluxe, Top Spin 4, F-Zero GX, Crackdown, Tiger Woods 12, Viewtiful Joe, Resident Evil 4, Sunset Overdrive, NHL 14... All low storage, 60fps gems on deck!
Just got my email and I’m super excited, thank you for the tips!
Congrats!!
Just got mine today. How long did yours take to ship and arrive?
@@viperlt86 mine took 4-5 days
Just ordered mine. Stoked to play some of my back log plus those lazy gaming days after hard day of work.😁
Update: Got mine and love it 😆
Where the link to the app u working on for the steam deck
I'm going to get a steamdeck in February as an 18th birthday gift and I will play so much fallout, i used to be a console player and I personally feel that controller for singleplayer games is the best
I have the high end deck coming which I'm very excited about but some of your tips make me anxious, like not even knowing what Proton GE is, or what exactly I should download in terms of apps, or why, or how, considering I haven't even held a Steam Deck yet. So... Thanks for scaring me man :( lol
Since it's the 512gb version, I'm not messing with SD cards.
Subbed - wish I'd found this vid when I recieved my Deck afew days ago
If you set your refresh rate to 45 and then try to run emulated games (N64), the sound will be garbled. Set it back to 60 and the framerate limit to off to fix this.
You were not kidding about backlog. I got my VSD 3 weeks ago. I had zero games. Now I have over 100 games.
Your path to becoming a PC gamer is complete :D
I'm quite late to the party so I don't know whether to buy a SD now or wait for the next model.
7:35 Thank you! This one made Persona 5 strikers compatible.
Im watching these while waiting for my steam deck 😭
Great video. I can't wait to receive my deck today!!!!
Congrats on getting your steam deck soon and thanks for the great comment!
mine was 701.11 with WA State tax
I subscribed! Can I ask where you got the umbrella hat?
@@stevenallick4637 if you're already using it in your deck it should already be formatted
Real informative, thank you
I have a Tomtoc case that has the handle vs zipper on other side, making the center of gravity opening the case naturally hold the deck. Also I'm paranoid about dropping it, I always open the case flat on table
Just got my deck today and this was a great video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks bro I get mine 9/2/2022 I am so excited
I read somewhere that the Steam Deck does not implement the SD card A2 feature(A driver on the host manages the IO during read/writes to the A2 cards) and might be slower than using A1 cards. It would be cool if someone did a test with A1 and A2 cards of the same capacity to verify that spending more to get an A2 SD card is worth it.
That would have been nice to know before hand.
Read the same thing and it should be very real if it is not changed in last steam OS version, for me best choice which had all other parameters exact right was nintento licensed.
I have the 1tb A2 and it works perfectly
I have a 1tb A1 U1 and it loads everything fast.
@@addeckted88 the one with Nintendo-licensed is more preferable? I'd like to but it's kinda pricey but what's second best to it?
My screen is anti glare already as it is and I want to get a screen protector without compromising the anti glare.
Any options?
You should be able to get an anti-glare screen protector, but you will want to make sure it’s compatible
SD card is not as fast as the internal drive , so be mindful of that for performance
By store do you mean Steam, or something else?
@@Vulpas Pretty sure he means running Discover in Desktop mode to download apps
I cannot stand glare, so I got the matte screen protector and love it so far
You might want to do 50fps instead of 60 because of PAL standards. Some games may have optimized routines for it and, as I can tell, coming from a PAL region, your eye barely notices it, but your bat + gpu will thank you.
Love you owned up to the products being affiliate, you the guy
The 512gb sd card you recommend is like £50, a 1tb ssd is £150, so personally I'm planning on going the ssd route
The SD card route is the easiest way to upgrade the Deck's storage. Installing a bigger SSD is nice too 👍
@@games_revealed so black friday dropped the sd card price so now it's more economical
Sounds like you got a good start on deck ownership.
"I like whats down there" 😏😏😏
I feel old.. I understood like 10% of what you were saying…
My problem was when trying to type "Proton GE" the deck would only take the P and then it would overwrite it with each subsequent letter as I typed. Navigation in desktop mode is a PITA. not even going to try again until I get some peripherals.
Awesome stuff man thank you.
I always keep my DECK updated... 🤣😆
Im just trying to figure out how to add shortcuts to my desktop mode like youtube. I cant figure out how to give it permission with the flatpack stuff
I was looking for a video with instructions, like how to open the quick access menu and start the desktop?
How to alt+tab if I’m playing game and need to do something in the desktop?!? I’m not using keyboard and mouse.
Will I be able to put wemod n other cheat apps on it? If so, I'm totally getting this to connect to TV to free up my pc for other stuff.
I thing, Aperture Desk Job should be preinstalled on every SteamDeck
I just got the deck trying to download games from epic but it’s not launching for some reason 😢
New updated on my steam deck it at Q4 move back to Q3 July-September 2022 most be getting it soon
My deck shows battery health 94% and I've only had it since Saturday is this normal
Man, do you know if there is a way to install xbox app, not to play in cloud, but the app itself, to download the games I have in xbox gamepass?
i agree about have lots of game on steam... when i first start steam, i thought i wont be able to buy more than 5 games... now i have more than hundreds... eventhough all of it i buy during sale but slowly it become collection of games...
Do you have a video on how to setup the quick access menu?
How do you setup the deck to use the right side track pad in place of the right side analog stick?
Hello, how are you? I bought a steam deck and installed the game. It doesn't run. Is it necessary to install programs to run the game like on a computer?
As this a newbie list I think you need to explain proton etc.. what is it and why. More of a complete New user to steam deck just my 2 cents
Lifesaver is a great idea, but the new cases are not coming with the straps. Got mine and it was missing, so emailed Valve and was informed of the change :(.
Sorry to hear that. Yeah, sounds like they stopped including them. Get yourself a nice protective case which is even better than the lifesaver.
I want that hat! It's so dope!
Surface Pro 2 and 4, Lenovo and Huion display tablets, samsung galaxy tab 8
Is this somehow different?
Was in Best Buy yesterday and was talking to my bro about the steam deck and some guy overheard us talking and asked me if I wanted to sell him the deck. I haven’t even got the thing yet (should have it by sep. 21st) I’m seriously thinking about selling it to him since he did offer a bit more then what it’s worth. I got the 256gb. I don’t know what to do lol
Don't open it and scalp that shit on eBay for a grand. Everybody does it anyway, why not you?
@@captainthruster9484 lol yeah been thinking about it but I’ve also been watching a lot of videos on the steam deck and I’m kinda excited to try it out. I do have an Xbox but I’m not really a big gamer, I really only play apex so not sure how much I’ll be using it. I think once I get it in hand I’ll make up my mind or my nephew will guilt trip me into giving it to him lol
Lol same kinda. Hate to say it flexed a little bit how Im finally getting one to my friend and he offered to buy it from me 😂. Honestly not gonna do it since I waited 7 months after reservation but its crazy how much people will pay to skip the wait.
How does the Magglass anti-glare screen protector compare to the 512gb anti-glare screen?
Can you get other game sites like epic games both on lutris or heroic launcher on steam deck. So like if a game doesn't work on lutris variant launcher you can use heroic launcher ?
I wish I had a 300 games backlog...only.
The Steam Sales will be upon us tomorrow (Nov 22nd), so you might be able to start working on the library soon
I ordered something from JSAUX, beware! I did not get an email confirmation, and no delivery yet, I ordered on Aug 7th, its now Aug 28th, the day before my bday and haven't heard a peep about my dock. I understand shit happens, they made an apology by email but still have not received tracking info or item.
Jsaux is a really weird one. Everyone on the SteamDeck subreddit knows about them, and their products are actually really good, but good god does their shipping times and delays have you on the edge thinking you've been scammed, until someday 3 weeks later your order shows up. Good products, bad logistics.
I got the 64gb. Do i need to upgrade the internal to 512gb or using an similar sized sd card is enough?
