Still don’t understand how this is considered a ‘prank’. It’s harassment. The end.
It's an assault
@@THE-id1by - it's really not in the same league as a physical attack. Resorting to deadly force in response to it should have bore some consequences even if not a substantial prison sentence.
Things are so crazy these days I would be scared to death if I told someone to leave me alone but they kept coming.
@@simonw1313 No, you misunderstand, an *assault* is a legal term, the definition of which is:
Assault refers to the wrongful act of causing someone to reasonably fear imminent harm. This means that the fear must be something a reasonable person would foresee as threatening to them.
Assault doesn't require a physical attack at all, that's *battery* which is the act of causing unlawful physical harm.
Someone being threatening and getting up in your face alongside 2 other goons totally counts as assault per the legal definition.
@@TRENCHESandTREADS -

'he pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer'.
What Tanner did was still not a physical attack no matter what the legal definition of assault is
To call Tanner an ‘influencer’ is a crime in itself.
Yeah, it's a crime that any of these clowns on RUclips are influencing anything.
Wait did Dr. Grande say that? That’s a good one 😂
Influencer in 2023 might aswell be synonymous with "clown"
My first thought.
no it isn't a crime.....he is influencing people to become bullies. So the term is correct and bulling is illegal.

Using the Phrase, "I was only kidding" has been used by every bully and A-hole for as long as anyone can remember.
@harrysatchel They just traded pranks. Cook did a prank. Colie returned the favor.

@@mls6684 it was said by every punk that got busted.
It's not a prank. It's bullying and intimidation.
Does unarmed bullying and intimidation justify lethal force? The shooter must not have been paying attention in class to get his concealed carry permit. True! Deserves death 🙄 muricans gotta chill. The prank was not deadly, so why was the response so?
@@andysommerlot5123 Agreed. Also, a "prank" is entertaining and displays wit on the part of the "prankster." The goal of the prankster is to make the audience laugh. Terrorizing someone so the instigator laughs alone is just plain sadism and bullying---never a display of comedic talent.
Moral of story......make sure you're outside when you shoot someone
These aren't pranks, they are harassment and very threatening. Especially if you've been the victim of a violent crime in the past.
Yes! I was thinking that the victim (a much smaller guy) may have been attacked, abused or bullied in the past. If so, that would be an absolutely terrifying encounter for him. 😔
Since he was a delivery driver it is possible that he had been robbed or jacked before. It’s a very common problem for delivery drivers. It’s also not uncommon for robbers to say something nonsensical prior to jumping someone.
@@lu_re7198 Yeah and when confronted, the "prankster" doesn't say anything, he just maintains very aggressive eye contact. What else did he expect? A moron.
Tanner stopped harassing Owen probably because of the shooting part …. I suppose it must have been that
Tanner’s dad and people like him are why bullying in schools doesn’t stop. The parents support their kid acting that way, saying it’s a joke.
Father is a douche just like his son. Apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
I was shocked to find out he even had a father but once I heard the father spoke I said hm that makes sense why he turned out that way...
Bullying in schools doesn't stop because teachers and administrators are: lazy; bad people; or both. Typically, teachers and administrators will punish the bullied kids...because they are easy to blame. They can blame one kid and ignore the 10, 20, 50 kids doing the bullying. Plus, the bullied kid usually comes from a less powerful family.
@@the_gilded_age_phoenix8717 I grew up with hot metal slides and no seat belts. We never needed "administrators" to help us deal with bullies.

This is the definition of “F*** around and find out” right here. This guy is not pranking anyone, he is bullying and intentionally intimidating random strangers for his personal gain. As someone who has been mugged before, I can 100% feel Colie’s fear and anger, especially with Cook being much larger than him. I also believe that Cook targeted him due to his smaller size, not knowing he was armed and instead assuming that he wouldn’t retaliate. And as dark as it is, the footage of the incident is quite satisfying. Cook found a victim that wasn’t gonna put up with his harassing behavior and he was clearly shocked about it. That one round fired was indeed self-defense.
Stole the words right out of my mouth. Classic case of FAFU.
While i think just showing the gun would have been enough defense, i agree with what you said. As i said elsewhere, there had recently been other delivery drivers attacked & robbed, so, aside from the size difference, Alan would have already been fearful of any strange encounter. These creators really need to face serious consequences for their behaviour & definitely charged for any criminal acts. They are only going to be going to more & more extremes to get those views. the fact that his dad is still supporting his actions - gives us the exact reason why Tanner grew up like this.
RUclips needs to demonatise prank videos. This 'genre' will go away pretty fast if that happens. People making money off unwilling participants doesn't seem right
That’s a great idea. YT has demonetized a lot of video types that actually provide a public service.
There are some light hearted respectful prank channels on youtube and they always go out of their way to let the people know they are a prank channel after pranking them. You see Tanner is a talentless little sociopath and the few great prank chanels do not upset people and do not stage pranks like so many horrible so called pranksters.
Edbassmaster has been making absolutely hilarious and respectful prank videos for 15 years
Ross on vlog creations is also very respectful but since he's grown and taken on some helpers that are irritating I hope he doesn't lose his genuine caring personality.
Agreed. People can be obnoxious turds all they want; but that doesn’t mean they should be compensated for it.
@@WillaHerreraI don't see how disrespecting other people and setting out to make fools of them in public, then publicizing the incidents on social media, is either funny or harmless.
Not just demonetize, the channel needs to be deleted completely. If the channel was giving people instructions and how to rob people it would be gone in a heartbeat. This is no different legally, it's a channel that is showing people how to harass and assault people for money. It is vile and repugnant and needs to be stopped immediately.
Tanner's dad is part of the problem. He's probably been excusing and defending his son's bad behavior his entire life.
That statement of “it’s open season on youtubers” is wacko
Apparently the norm should be it’s open season on the general public

'Public' malls are private property, owned by corporations where customers are guests, and he had been escorted out the day before by the official security.
@@theredpillneo2296 No, he certainly can. If representatives of the property of the mall decide that the behavior of a person is not wanted in that mall (or any store or other public place such as a government office) then a trespass warning can be given and the person escorted out if necessary. RUclips needs to ban these prank channels, they have blood on their hands
They'll never do that, they make too much money off it.
Allan should sue RUclips.
Exactly RUclips is enabling these clowns by paying them for clicks & views. Tanner’s RUclips channel should be deleted or at the very least demonitized. If his channel is monetized yes Alan Colie should sue em once his current case is resolved.
It sounds good but how does RUclips determine what is just people acting like they were pranked?
@@eshuorishas9987 If somebody is harassing and or bullying people it is not cool. If you verbally insult somebody in comments or make a statement that RUclips masters/oligarchs don't agree with they ban you. If you are harassing and bullying people they financially reward you / encourage you. RUclips is responsible as much as the 6'4" for him getting shot. Now I might get banned for making a true statement and calling him moron. :)
The scary thing is that I was in a similar situation and I thought I was being pranked and it turned out I wasn't. Many years ago, I was riding my bike when I saw a casual friend standing. I approached him and we talked about stuff. Two large guys approached us and started to make weird comments. I though that they knew my friend and they were busting his balls. Then one of them punched me in the head and I fell down. With me on the ground they started beating my friend. I was in complete shock and when I regained my vision, I run from there. My friend was not so lucky and got seriously beaten up. I am not proud of running away and leaving my friend behind, but at that moment I genuinely thought that they were going to kill me. If the situation were ever to repeat I would not think that it was prank and I would believe that my life was in danger.
Where do you live?
Very clearly and well stated. Tanner's dad's reaction explains clearly why Tanner is an abusive narcissist with no empathy for others.
I think Tanner lacks conscience, not just empathy.

I am actually glad to see the justice system not failing this young man who protected himself.
The issue is...no one knows it's a prank besides the person performing the prank. It could even be taken as someone trying to distract you for a robbery or assault.
That’s what I’m trying to say. For all Alan knew, Tanner was acting threatening and could have hurt him.
Honestly in that situation that's exactly what I would think. This weirdo is doing stupid things to distract me while someone else comes up from behind.
I think any reasonable person, myself included, would interpret that as a clear threat.
If it was me I would have told the cops I felt he was trying to rob me
which is common hell isn't there a dictators brother who was ended with one of these so called pranks.
Tanner is a big guy. No one knows it’s a prank, it seems mentally unstable, aggressive, like bullying, harassment, and intimidation.
Mean a total douch
Not to mention the cameraman and the other "person" who was next to him. If I was a shopper I would've definitely thought the group was about to mug or jump him.
None of that makes it okay to shoot someone.
This is a perfect example of why it is so important to have more than one tool for personal protection. A gun was entirely disproportionate to the situation, but a faceful of pepper spray would have been 100% appropriate.

Tanner Cook can totally 100 percent recognize emotions in other people. He knew exactly when to stop but it is only when he gets the reaction he wants. He is a bully. Plain and simple.

People love watching spoiled affluent kids be bullies and they reward them with monetary gain.
I agree. Tanner purposely elicits negative feelings from his victim, while his friends surround and further intimidate by visibly recording.
My first thought is why wasn't Tanner arrested for harassment? Seems to be one sided. As a former teacher with over 20 years, I still shame my head at why the bullies get away with "pranks" and the victims are punished.
not only did he get away with it.. FATHER stood up for him!? [what does that teach him?] They locked up and prosecuted the victim. Took away his source of income. Shameful!

Violent criminals often employ seemingly bizarre, confusing behaviors to confuse and throw their victims off guard. There was no reason for Alan to assume this was a “prank”. It was threatening and confusing behavior. Under the same circumstances I too would be very concerned for my own safety. Particularly after having made several non-violent attempts to disengage.
Tanner refusing to get out of Alan's face with a menacing look and his natural low intelligent appearance was definitely enough for Alan to assume Tanner was going to be physical threat. I think the aspect that Tanner kept a close distance brought the situation to a valid self defense scenario.

He's done this same thing numerous times, and his dad has gotten him out of the trouble he got into each time. What people are saying is, bullies always escalate. Always. This is proven. That's exactly what it is. People did this to me in school as a kid. They didn't leave me alone until I did things like throw school desks at them or stab them with pencils. They are poking people to get a rise. This kid had it coming to him. Let's hope next time someone properly punishes him.
@@nicholasfair6882 I worked with a giant fat slob who loved to do this to people at work and off the post.

I've had appendicitis.... if being gut shot is that painful, I think that Tanner has had a "come to Jesus" moment in his life.
I very much agree with PhD Grande's thoroughly insightful evaluation of the incident and jury's findings. I realize we cannot blur the lines of justice so that anyone soliciting in a mall risk being shot but in this case the defendant should be fully exonerated and his gun rights restored.

This prankster stuff is bullying & harassment! I hate it!
Tanner is a bully and brought three goons as backup.
The delivery driver was just trying to make a living. And the harasser was preventing him from making his next delivery. Lawmakers: Take heed. Enact some laws to have harassers fined and jailed.
Tanner and all the rest of the goons that do these pranks need to spend some time in jail. Alan needs to be compensated for all the anguish he's been through over this incident. This has got to stop.
The whole world is rooting for the shooter on this one! I just hope he can sue the state for making him go through this ordeal and get compensated.
can he sue the "prankster"? That would be great
Definitely not the whole world lol. There are many people, like me for example, that think both guys were in the wrong here.
Even the jury were initially deadlocked, and then compromised by acquitting him of most of the charges, but still sticking him with a contradictory guilty charge just so that he could at least receive a smaller punishment.
Just a note: I do not agree with that weapons charge. I don't personally think he's completely innocent, yea, but if you're going to find him not guilty of those first two charges, the guilty weapons charge makes no sense then. You can't have it both ways.
@@R0Tl Fair enough. You have a point that both were in the wrong, but there's a strong emotional aspect to this case that really hits people deeply - I'm one of them. In a way, these kinds of adult bullies really *are* a threat to our existence as decent human beings who deserve to be left alone.
@@craigfinnegan8534 oh believe me, that bully played around and found out, and I do not have any sympathy for him. And that he gets to just continue going on "pranking" people for income is a travesty.
Smart people are not rooting for the delivery driver at all. Concealed carriers are definitely not rooting for him, and we are glad that Allen cannot buy or possess a firearm again. His violent blunder cost him his firearms right, and rightfully so. He does not have the temperament to own or possess firearms for self defense.
The prankster is not "unable to recognize emotions" he is a sociopath, and simply doesn't care how uncomfortable he makes people. That is his intent.
I don't know the guy, never watched his content, but let's not label people socipaths based on one interaction that you observed in a video.
Nah, I think he recognizes the fear in people, he enjoys it.

Extremely informative, thank you so much!
As a delivery driver I support him 100% maybe direct violence wasnt the answer but the amount of times I've been threatened while working is completely uncalled for. I understand completely why he did what he did here.
Yes, delivery driver's are on high alert to watch out for violent situations. You never know when the next customer might be dangerous, or you could be mugged or worse. Most people don't think it's a dangerous job, but it can be. That's one reason I always tip very generously. Plus, they're using their own car, paying for gas, and making way less than minimum wage, usually. People think the delivery fee IS the tip, but that money goes straight into the establishments pocket. One of my friends delivers pizza and he's got some weird stories.
Nah direct violence was 100% the answer. Too bad the criminal lived, so far.
Might have been excessive, but if a big dude blaring his phone directly in my face with two other goons with him, I'd be terrified what was to come next if they wouldn't leave me alone. In a fearful reaction of "how can I stop this it's not stopping", yea id have reacted in the same way. This Tanner kid is a douchebag.
Thank you for bringing us food.
And what of the other people around him who could have been accidentally shot by him? There were people walking around even in the video. Alan only cared about Alan in that situation and while I understand his fear and the reason for his reaction, I cannot condone is lack of situational awareness. That bullet could have hit any number of people in that vicinity and that to me is unacceptable. His safety wasn’t the only to consider in this situation.
When you are outnumbered you don’t know if someone will stab you, hit you with a bat, punch you in the head, rob you, etc. You cannot keep track of 3 people following you closely in your personal space. Alan was not looking for a fight, he wanted to do his job. He was startled, intimidated, confused and harassed. Too bad the bully didn’t learn anything from this experience.
He was startled, intimidated, confused and harassed.
@@mattsmith1126is your name Pete
Apparently , the father didn' t learn anything either.
Decent people in his area should seek him out and deal him a dose of his own crap. I think it would be a funny prank if people just started walking up to this guy while he is doing a video and shooting him.
You are 100% right Screw That PUNK
I mean what are you supposed to do when someone much bigger continues to advance into your personal space, as you back away? Just wait for the police or security?
This is the first presentation I have seen that actually explains what was said on the phone. Thanks.
When you tell a stranger who is "menacing" to go away 3 times while actively trying to retreat, it is threatening when they continue advancing towards you, especially in a crowding manner.
Don't forget about the three friends of Tanner's that were with him. Who wouldn't be concerned for their safety at that point?
Send Tanner and his buddies to Ukraine or Cambodia or Syria to detonate land mines!
Evidently he was not aware he could hold the gun up WITHOUT actually shooting it. You know, the way Police often do.
if it's in a crowded mall and they have cameras it's clearly not life threatening
@@robertgiles9124Yes, unfortunately the guy lost emotional control and will be held accountable for his choice. I still pity him however; he would still be living his regular life if he wasn't at the wrong place at the wrong time.
If an action causes someone else fear, humiliation, or embarrassment, the action is not a prank or a practical joke. It is harassment, bullying, and possibly assault. If I was being harassed and pursued by a 6-foot-4 man accompanied by his posse of three other males, I would have been terrified, even in a mall surrounded by hundreds of other people.
It is assault. Assault does not require that you intend to cause fear, only that you intentionally engage in actions that are *likely* to cause fear.
I think it would be hilarious if Alan got a monetary settlement from the guy he shot.
This will happen again. Hopefully these "influencers" will start to catch on. The trend of pranking/harassing random strangers is criminal behavior.
Fantastic commentary, one of the best overviews that I ever heard. Hope this is a regular feature on your channel.😅
One key people need to know is that harassment can become assault really quick. Don’t try and scare or intimidate people
Especially not food delivery drivers or riders. Most of them have been attacked multiple times in the past.
More people are armed than you know.
Yes, depending on the local law, assault doesn't need to be physical and is roughly defined as making someone feel extremely uncomfortable.
Annoying and harassing are a step away, annoying in yelling stupid stuff in a mall or playing stuff loud on a speaker, harassment is singling out one person and doing the same thing..
that case in Ohio with the white kid is interesting because he appears to pull up on these black kids (who already have records) and starts shooting them with this gel gun BUT that doesn't make sense to me at all why you would pull up on three older black kids (adults) and just do that...I mean there must be more context because you would only do that if you had a death wish. and well that wish came true, but the self defense part of it is the issue because afaik you are only acting in self defense so long as you have a demonstrable reason to believe your life is actively being threatened. like that cop who shoots that woman who stole the alcohol when she was driving straight towards him. but the black kids clearly decide they are not in imminent danger at some point (if they ever did) and then they proceed to beat the kid to death. I mean his spine was broken and he was lying face up on the ground, and that was only enough to get assault charges. I mean, with the YT prank my most generous take is that "it was just a prank" and if they didn't get what they deserved at least the verdict hopefully deters pranks in the future. for the other case my most generous take is that the white kid definitely should not have acted up like that but it wasn't self defense when they stomped him to death and the only implications of the verdict are that we need to return to a segregated society.
10 years ago I would have thought differently but in 2023 Alan said no and Tanner could have been armed. As a woman this would have been traumatic and I would have been scared to death. Tanner should be charged with harassment
🎯
Not only charged with harassment, but pranked himself, by being ordered to go door-to-door in his area and declare himself a sex offender for playing lewd content in public. Yeah, that's an overreaction that doesn't involve bullets, and one that I'm all for.
Had Tanner been armed, he would have been entitled to return fire. So they BOTH would have been defending themselves which is bvllsh1t. This shows that Alan firing his gun was wrong. Obama pointed this concept out in the debate on stand your ground.
What happened in those 10 years?
Does aging change us?

"He can take a bullet, but not a joke!"

Using a goon squad to back you up is not a practical joke. It is harassment, intimidation, and a direct threat to the safety of others. At some point, Tanner is going to get himself killed and the blame can only go to his father.
Never ok to exploit unsuspecting individuals for your ridiculous attempt at amusement and financial gain. Doing this to anyone is pitiful and considering how many people have anxiety and/or CPTSD from being bullied etc this innane attention seeking is cruel and self-serving.
I hadn't thought of the other guys there with Tanner. Yes, that would seem more threatening. Don't forget the mom, she's as much to blame as the dad. Watch the interview of her and Tanner as they leave the courthouse. She literally says she will support her son no matter what he chooses to do with his life.
I absolutely love the way you lay everything so fair....and you are SO calm🏛️
Dr. G, the two videos you did on the situation are among my favorites you have put out. Since we have a new update in the final disposition of the case, can we get a third and final video, "was the outcome of this case fair, and who came out of it for the better between Tanner and Alan?"
The motion to overturn the firearm charge was unsuccessful and he was sentenced to time served. Collie is now a felon and served a full eight months in jail. Ostensibly he can never again own a firearm, and was fired permanently from DoorDash.
Tanner gained a huge amount of subscribers and I believe he feels his having been shot is a "badge of honor." He did get his stomach and liver pierced, which must have been quite scary and painful.
The problem with giving him a felony aside from the jail time, is despite having been judged by a jury of his peers that he acted in self defense, he will now have the right to defend himself taken away from him. Discharging in a building? So if you're assaulted inside a building you don't have the right to defend yourself? Absolutely absurd.
If the judge upholds the conviction. I don't think he will. The defense position is correct and a good judge will overturn. Firing a gun in a building is not illegal if done in self-defense.
That was probably a misinformed/stupid jury. They just took the fact he discharged a firearm literally and found him guilty for it. That being said he could have just brandished instead of shooting straight away.
@@mattsmith1126no you cannot this isn’t a fucking movie. Brandishing your weapon that close is extremely stupid and that’s why it isn’t taught.
