YouTuber Tanner Cook reacts to not guilty verdict for man who shot him

- "It is what it is," that is how Prank RUclipsr Tanner Cook reacted after a jury found the man who shot him inside Dulles Town Center in April not guilty.
A jury found Alan Colie not guilty of aggravated malicious wounding or use of a firearm for aggravated malicious wounding, however, he was found guilty of firing a gun inside the mall. That guilty verdict has been set aside until a hearing to discuss it on October 19.
Colie was standing trial for shooting Tanner Cook, the 21-year-old behind the RUclips channel "Classified Goons."
The case went viral not because there was a shooting inside a mall, but because Cook is known to make prank videos. Cook amassed 55,000 subscribers with an average income of up to $3,000 per month. He said he elicits responses to entertain viewers and called his pranks “comedy content.”
WUSA9 caught up with the Cook family following the verdict. When we asked Tanner Cook how he felt about the outcome, he said it is all up to God.
"I really don't care, I mean it is what it is," he said. "It's God's plan at the end of the day."
His mother, Marla Elam, said the family respects the jury and that the Cook family is just thankful Tanner is alive.
"Nothing else matters right now," she said.
Tanner's father, Jeramy Cook, sent a statement to WUSA9 Thursday night saying, "We are all less safe than before."
Jeramy Cook called the verdict a product of mob rule. He said that the media painted Tanner as the aggressor and Colie as the victim.
"Right after this shooting, Saturday Night Live reported on their Weekend Update that a RUclipsr doing a prank video at a Virginia mall was shot, then paused, starred into the camera and said good," said Jeramy Cook. "Everyone laughed, so millions of people saw this and just went with it."
He said that he was told by the Loudoun County prosecutor that even though the facts supported his son being the victim, public opinion wasn't with him.
Jeramy Cook added that his family has been targeted and harassed by people saying his son should have been killed.
"So is it open season on RUclipsrs even if they don't touch or talk to you," he said. "It's cool to just shoot them no matter what the facts are?"
Jeramy Cook ended the statement by saying the world is living in a time where public opinion can be easily manipulated.

I know I would have, Tanner is super lucky. He survived, his internet clout grew tremendously and he didnt get any legal punishment. It takes a real dumbass to admit to everyone while the case is on-going that hes gonna keep doing it and views this event as a win and not a wake up call. Internet pranksters literally go and just film themselves breaking the law, even if its staged they dont say it is so they are filming a law being broken. Its disgusting that platforms allow those videos to stay up and that they get very little reprecussions and if they get harmed from self defense or something they become a martyr. Colie probably reacted a little bit too hastily but hes still the victim in my eyes (he could have just pointed the gun at the kid and probably would have gotten him to back off).

Take solace in the fact that surviving a bullet wound just the beginning. It is very likely he's facing a long recovery and life long problems. The true crime here is that the perimedics brought him to the hospital 🏥 and the doctors kept him alive. Sorry but you can't just shoot someone for putting a phone in your face. The shooter also did not seem to bright himself. All he had to do is keep walking, instead he did jail time and still had court fees, stress, and lost his job. This is why having a gun is a huge responsibility, it's not something to be used at the first hint of being threatened when he could have easily walked away.

Where did he overpower or threaten him exactly. There was no reason to believe his life was in danger, you can't just shoot someone for being annoying in a crowded area. These types of pranks are “why” he got shot in the first place. Like many parents we have to tell our children how to react when being harassed like this. Ironically, we tell them to “say stop 3 times and then defend yourself”. The video is very telling. He takes off his glasses and makes his funny face where he squints his eyes and his mommy LAUGHS, like he is so cute. It makes it clear her remarks were disingenuous, and simply coached by the defense lawyer. They clearly think this whole event is a joke and don’t care about the poor guy who protected himself is still sitting in jail. Also ironic is that daddy is not with them during the interview, even though he previously commented about his kid being a “good kid”. Dad’s absence shows the parents can’t even come together now to teach their kid what he is doing is wrong. It is not a leap to infer the parents probably antagonize each other constantly, and that is where their son’s behavior is born.
