I'm amazed that in the giant word of youtube, there are precious few detailed videos on transom replacement where you can actually follow along step by step. Thank you.
just a heads up for any of you DIY out there, do your hot coat of resin on the ply with a bit of acetone mixed in so that it soaks better into the timber. Let the resin cure before laying down your chop strand, that way the chop wont suck the resin back out of the ply.
Jay, Hope your Mother gets better soon! I really appreciate your sharing of the how to... Been absolutely motivated to get on my 1986 SeaRay 20' Seville...... Thanks again!
Couple of suggestions. I save cardboard from large items, like washers, driers, refrigerators and water heaters for painting and to place on the floor for projects like this. Two; sometimes you can put rollers with oil based paints in plastic bags and then place them in a refrigerator (not freezer), and they stay usable for some time.
for all of you wondering what marine plywood is made of? its not the glue that is used, its the wood. the tree is a south American wood called OKUMA it hold to rot water 5 times longer than standard pine plywood. my full time job was at boat bodyshop and rebuilt many many floors and transoms over the years. looks like you did everything the right way. and guys, when starting this make sure you have 2-5 weeks time, BIG JOB lots of steps to complete..
Hello - good work. I realize there are a number of different ways and techniques but want to point out that around 8 min you are coating the entire transom with resin to seal it. I would suggest mixing that coat with acetone if you are using poly resin - that allows better saturation of the wood especially if you sand it first.
Did you use marine grade plywood? If you do use marine grade plywood, would you still need to the extra water proofing or is it a 'rather be safe then sorry' thing? Thanks mate, love your restore.
I dilute the first few coats on plywood with Stirene makes in soak in more imo looks like ur doin a great job. That PL adheasive is great we use it for granite work all the time and that stuff really holds :)
I always use stirene and dilute the first few coats. The plywood needs to soak in the resin. If you just wet out and glass the plywood. The plywood can drawl out the resin from the glass.
when doing you filler, apply your thicked resin and mix up 100- 200 ml. of wet resin and use a 2in. china brush and wet smooth , and always use wax mixed in the last coat of resin
The Fillet mixture does have strength due to the strands, but the strength comes from the glass laid up on the sides of the stringers. The fillets act as glue and a transition from the stringer to the hull. Makes the glass lay down better.
Hey man, I know you’ve been doing this for a good bit on a couple boats. Do you have a particular brand you use that’s quality but not top dollar as far as resign, catalyst and gel coat? All I’ve found and have been recommended was west systems but they seem very premium and expensive. Do you have a better or cheaper alternative to west system materials?
Dues humidity affect the wood before you apply the resin coats? I am doing this right now. It has been intermittently rainy and humid here in Florida. I have a garage here with ventilation and have put the marine plywood in front of a shop fan for a while and seems dry but wonder if I should bring the wood inside the office a/c to try and remove moisture overnight????
after6tuning I never really had any problem. I would not take it into another environment as it may change the cure time. Man that is a good question. I did a quick search and did not find anything definitive.
you may want to consider the fact that acetone can be any where from 14-20 a gallon and you still have a long way to go and usually you cant save your brushes and rollers anyway also consider covering your garage floor with old tarps or plastic much cleaner just throw away
hey really nice work, but as the way I do stringers you might wanna try on that filet after you gyped it up with chopped strand puddy mixture to immediately glass over it with with one layer of Matt or 2 about 4 inches wide then roll out the you dont have the airbubble toubles afterwards just a thought
good to see i am not the only person with major ocd. great job . done my boat from watching your videos. some things i would have done diffrently. but i like your work and attension to detail.
Hi Jay... This series was very well done from start to finish... You would be a great host for a DIY show!! Very detailed and personable. QUESTION: Seems like I heard you mention putting 2 layers of Chop on the transom for waterproofing, but later only saw you do one... Do you recommend 1 or 2 layers of the 1.5oz?
If you have a swap meet or flea market you can buy cheap rollers and brushes there. Much cheaper then Home Depot. The only thing I would try to clean is the steel roller for rolling fiberglass.
Marine ply is no more water resistant than exterior ply, it is just very high quality, and has almost no voids between the laminates. Yes you would still treat it. Ehow has a big article on this.
@ 7:11 (hmm) A Texan saying "Don't be a afraid to be liberal", makes me consider wearing a tin foil hat :-) Jokes aside, this is a great playlist!! I just bought my first boat, but I fear that this playlist will come in handy as problem #2 evolves....
Wood done right is fiber glassed wood and fiber glass is a composite. So, technically you're killing yourself to turn wood into a composite instead of just using composite materials like Coosa.

the DentalDude that is a very good tip. Thinning it will allow it to dig in the wood.

Thanks so much for These videos, I'm about to tackle this Transom repair on my Four Winns Cuddy....
You are very welcome
Finally! Someone that is more A.D.D. than I myself!
Nice work.

And soaked with arsenic, which is illegal in most states

Great video! Can't beat the step by step instruction. Question.. What type of resin do you use and where would I buy chop strains? thanks
Unbelievably well done
Nice work you are very talented FriscoBoater

Why did you use exterior grade ply instead of marine ply ? Is it cost difference
good to see i am not the only person with major ocd. great job . done my boat from watching your videos. some things i would have done diffrently. but i like your work and attension to detail.
So, I live in Ft Worth....if I needed to have this done could I pay you to do it??
Are you counting on the fillet to add structural strength, or could you of cut the smaller piece at a 45 degree angle ?
nice work where do u get all ur fiberglass material from..
love your vids,.... ive learned a bunch,.... where do you buy your supplies?
what you think of the home depot resins and the auto bondo stuff
Nevermind. I found the post. The guys are talking about your processes there. You are Friscoboater.
FriscoBoater, did you use a wax (sanding aid) in your poly resin to make it sandable?? thanks!
NO

Nice video man do you have the name s the item's you to mix that peanut butter mix I need to some touch ups my boat

You were saying we should wear a mask. What kind? Particulate? Organic vapor? Thanks.
i know wood is alot cheaper but what about the long run of ether product
Common myth. High quality Exterior grade Ply is perfectly fine.
its also not absorbent hence the need to use accelerator ;-)
i feel for you,i am having the same mare, but on a much smaller boat,
You wipe it down with acetone first and it makes the dry coat tacky.
where do you get your rolls of chopped strand from?
First use thin resin no wax
Allow it to soak in
Then 2nd coat resin no wax
Then Glass onto resin soaked wood
then resin
then gelcoat with wax

@puch7261
A local distributor. The had to order it, but I saved on shipping because they added it to their other order.
where do you get your fiberglass supplies in dallas?
You dont. Mine came from US Composites.
That's what I've found. Bought some glass and epoxy from Jamestown distributors. Will look at US composites, thanks.
Kick off , you mean dry ?
How much did it Cost for this project
about 8k
If you have it done, be prepared to spend close to 5K to do it like I did. I have about 3K in supplies.
Do you have a video on how you mixed your resin?
Guess not.
Its 1-1
Why not use Coosa board so it will never rot again?
Cost. We are not building war ships. If wood is done right, you will not have to worry.
Wood done right is fiber glassed wood and fiber glass is a composite. So, technically you're killing yourself to turn wood into a composite instead of just using composite materials like Coosa.
@IndyDarrell
Good point
Fill it is the term. Filet is a cut of meat. But fill it is spelled filet for metal and glass work.
thanks
im beginning to think you bought this knowing there was some work to be done! LOL
you should use marine plywood for it
dtin atx texas!!?? With such a big coastline? Just go to a specialty plywood store.
nice vid thanks , with cost being an issue you look like you've got about a half of a pint on the floor
@Speakrdude
LOL!!!!! It's true! I call it being scatterbrained.
Always use an Accelerator on bare plywood !
You need to give it time to seep in.
every professional boat builder i have ever meet has said to use it !
I used PL Premium Adhesive
wrap the saw horse in painters tape and it won't stick
use wedges 2x4's and prop them against it
So far $1600 on all the supplies.
2 1/4 inches
Excellent to see that woodprix has new plans what helped me save some money and energy to build it.
try ebay.some people are looking to sell off there stuff cheap i got 4 rolls of6" cloth tape 200yards for 50$ thats dirt cheap
Pfff if you don't get shit on the floor of your garage you're doing it wrong
My wife's going to kill my. OH WELL. Love that comment just the sort of thing I would say.
and now he is not with that wife no more lol
Some say he is still running away from his wife! He is somewhere in Canada by now
I prefer to build with Woodprix plans.
why wood when you could use coosa board
Is coosa as cheap as wood? Hint hint...
I Should be wearing a mask but uh.....
*drops dead* 💀
Do you hang out on Sea Ray Owners Forum?
clubSeaRay (google it)
Uscomposites com
Did you use polyester or vinyl Ester or epoxy?
Hi How much did you expend on materials
it cost him a wife.....
