I had heard of Cookie Gilchrist, but I didn't know he had been through and accomplished so much. Thanks for shining a light on a player that should be talked about more.
The name Cookie Gilchrist is new to me, but it's one I'm definitely going to remember now. It's hard to imagine why someone who had such a noteworthy role in the foundations of professional football is so rarely mentioned.
@@scizorbullet8185 it's true in this case I'm usually the first person to point out has nothing to do with race but when u talk about stories like this it's obviously because he was a black man in the 50s I'm surprised the NFL doesn't try to prop em up for public support these days tho
Videos like this are why I subbed to KTO in the first place. I can’t believe how much influence this man had off the field, and what that has become now. Thank you, Karsten. And thank you too, Cookie Gilchrist.
I truly believe this is your greatest video to date. This is the kind of quality I find in productions on the history of the league made by the NFL itself. It felt like watching an episode of "A football life" or "The timeline". Kudos to you KTO
Refusing the CFL hall of fame bust is sick enough, but having a direct impact on cultural change in New Orleans takes this guy to a whole nother level. It's great to see that his distrust of authority morphed into a much more positive quality and he became so headstrong going forward.
I have never even heard of this story until today. KTO, you constantly find amazing stories that I dont think every diehard NFL fan can find. Good video once again, keep on producing brother.
I knew Cookie! He was friends with my dad in the 1970s. My father owned a health food store in West Hollywood, and Cookie was a frequent customer. I still have a photo with him. Cute story. He once walked into my dad's store and opened a package of fig newton cookies and began munching away with a smile. I thought, wow, you've really earned your name! Very sweet man - and yes, big and tall. Taller, and bigger, than Jim Brown or O.J. Simpson. Great memories.
In a very indirect way he was responsible for a lot of the benefits players of all 4 major sports have today including equality of all races and penalties when contractual guarantees are broken by owners, what a legend
Wow this is an incredible story. I have never heard of him before but it really does seem like he was an incredible player and pioneer of the game. He deserves much more recognition
I've heard of him and my pops had talked about cookie and Ernie Davis and what great football players they were. But I sadly haven't heard about cookie Gilchrist in 40 years till today.
Why, because of what he did off the field? Sorry but for me, it's what you do on the field and his performance while good, isn't HOF worthy. If that's the case, I'm sure I can think of at least a couple dozen who should go ahead of him who were good but not great
Why would he be in the Hall of Fame? He ran for 4,000 yards. That's not HOF quality and that goes for others like Paul Hornung. Most overrated player of all time was Hornung.
Amazing video, Cookie was a beast. There's some great moments and talk about Cookie from the 'Full Color Football: History of the AFL' part two documentary that are great to listen to. Though I do have to disillusion the video slightly, there was another player that was signed outta high school a few years later named Charlie Leigh. He had an NFL Films bit made about him a few years ago, worth a watch, though they too negate to mention Cookie signing an NFL contract years earlier. Great research KTO.
I've watched your content for awhile now, this was probably the best video I've seen on this channel. It was both informative and educational. Extremely well done.
First time knowing about Cookie was from a 1960s book that my father had. It featured the star Halfbacks/RBs in both leagues. Brown Taylor Paul Lowe Hornung Gilchrist I believe Leroy Kelly Gale Sayers Some others. Those older books can be gems.
As a kid growing up in Buffalo, my Dad and uncle had Bills season tickets. I saw Cookie play in every home game while he was a Bill. He was the best running back in the AFL.
As a young high school player in the sixties, Cookie was one. My favorites. A Sports Illustrated picture of him was on my bedroom wall with the likes of Jim Brown and others.
Wow, I'm glad you told Cookie Gilchrist's story! I had never heard of him before. He sure accomplished a lot on and off the field! Standing up for himself due to the injustices he received is admirable.
Thank you for covering this. I sadly never heard of this man. The amount of courage this dude had is admirable. On a side note, what Paul Brown to him is unforgivable
Cookie Gilchrist was a big power fullback who played on the original Dolphins expansion team back in ‘66. That was at the tail end of his playing career. He was a load, especially with the powerful AFL Buffalo Bills of the sixties.
I actually had to do a project my junior year about local history and we did the Bills and I learned a bit about him while doing research for the project.
Since my family moved to Western New York in 1991, I've been a fan of the Bills, even through the drought. So I've heard the name Cookie Gilchrist many times from older fans who remember the AFL days, and a large number of them would say he was as good on the field, if not better, than OJ Simpson was. But they rarely mentioned the off-field things. It doesn't surprise me though that Ralph Wilson would treat him that way. He was notoriously cheap and didn't really like paying anyone, especially at that time
Well, I was wrong about my call on your last video. Kudos to you for another banger video though 🙏🏻 If you have talked about Carlton Haselrig before, though, I'm not sure if I've seen it. His NFL tenure was short, but his journey there was interesting
Awesome video. My knowledge of pro football doesn't really go all that much before I was born, so I only know of some of these legends of the olden days. First time ever hearing about Cookie.
Saw him play when he was with the Buffalo Bills. Defenders were afraid to tackle him. Closet athlete to Jim Brown I have ever seen. He was truly feared on the field. Truly awesome athelete.
What A Man What A Man and He Deserves To Be Inducted Into The CFL and NFL Hall of Fame For All His Accomplishments On and Off The Field He Is A Big Factor Of Today’s Four Major Sports R.I.P. 🐐
This is an amazing video! Who knew this guy could have been as good as Jim Brown if only Paul Brown hadn’t screwed it up. Best football player no one’s ever heard of. What an amazing story
For being such a legendary coach, it's amazing Paul Brown tried to get away with that. Like, he didn't think the NFL would notice that he signed an 18 year old kid in outright defiance of the rules?
I had one of his football cards when I was growing up. I don't think Paul Brown lied to him, Brown just didn't know the rules about signing players back then.
Another AFL legend that was lost to time, Charlie Hennigan of the Houston Oilers. The greatest undrafted WR in NFL history who was the original owner of the Single Season Receiving Yards record post merger, untill it was broken by Jerry Rice
Very good video about Cookie Gilchrist, I am 66 years old now I do remember him I was very young then but yes, he did standout on the football field I was too young to know about his life off the Football field at that time. I do recall a high school football player Football player from Albany NY just about that time his name was Charlie Lee. Charlie was this kind of player as well; he would play a high school for Albany high and play the entire game and never be tackled. The best anyone could was maybe push him out of bounds if he wasn't going all the wat for a TD. Now you made the statement that Cookie was the one and only play to come out of high school to play professional football in the US. This is incorrect Charlie Lee signed right out of high school and played on the 1970 Superbowl team for the Dolphins. Charlie signed with the steelers right out of high school Pete Rozelle made a special ruling allowing Charlie to play in the NFL. Charlie died Oct 26, 2006, he was a great man on and off the Football Field.
I had heard of Cookie Gilchrist, but I didn't know he had been through and accomplished so much. Thanks for shining a light on a player that should be talked about more.

I think he needs to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. He definitely changed the game

Gilchrist definitely deserves another look for Canton.

I had that book it was called "The Running Backs" by Murray Olderman. Great Book. and yes Cookie Gilcrist was a great player.
Cookie went to the school I go to currently. It’s crazy to think that a player of his caliber walked in the hallways I just walked in today!
What an absolute legend. More people need to know about this amazing man. Thanks for spreading the word with this video.
I got to see Cookie, on TV, when I was younger. He was the most dominant player on the field, amazing even at the end of his career.
You should do a video on Ernie Davis. The number one overall pick in 1962 that never played a down due to dying from leukemia.

I always knew who he was because I am a bills fan. But I never knew he had such an impact on the game. May he rest in piece
I remember seeing Cookie Gilchrist playing for the Buffalo Bills in the old AFL. He was a beast.
Thank you for covering this. I sadly never heard of this man. The amount of courage this dude had is admirable.

between Paul Brown, the NFL and the media, Cookie really got the "Dick Allen" treatment. That can wreck a person.
