When I got my Spyder, I used eco mode thinking the gas mileage would be better. Then I saw a Shawn Smoak video about what eco mode does to the Spyder engine and I stopped using it since then. I enjoy the performance of the Spyder without the eco mode. And your test result confirms my test results as well; the gain in gas mileage is minimal at best in eco mode. The sweet spot I found is 65mph or 105km/h; I achieve regularly 32-34mpg. And, yes, over 70mph or 115km/h fuel consumption increases and gas mileage drops quite a bit. Cheers Chris
I seem to remember Shawn talking about carbon scoring in e cylinders and eco mode but I could never find it again. He has SO many videos. I agree with you. After hearing Shawn Smokes and after testing by people like @PurpleOnThree, I just stopped using it altogether.
I used ECO mode for the 1st 500 miles of ownership. I hadn't ridden a bike in perhaps 15 years due to injury then that P word thing happened. Anyhow I did the Can-Am Experience twice because there was an extra slot and the leader wanted me to gain more experience garnering my interest. 30 days later I took possession of my new 2023 Spyder RT Limited in Dark Marsala Red. Those 1st 500 miles taught me a lot. When i realized I could press ECO mode again and turn it off oh man did my ride come alive! MPG? Maybe you're right, Chris, there may have been 1 MPG differences between the two but the experience was definitely night and day!
As already mentioned, Eco mode throttle response mapping will simply be more on the gentle side vs normal mode it is perfect for driving in Rain and gravel roads. In all other conditions, I'm driving in normal mode. Living in Germany with 75% no-limit Highways, a higher MPG is not really what I'm looking for. Just fun is enough.
The LAST place that I would try to compare eco to normal mode is a steady state highway ride. " ECO Mode Smart Assist helps you optimize your shifting behaviour " It softens /slows your throttle response. In a steady state highway cruise, you aren't giving it much of an opportunity to do anything.
I would agree with Wayne's assessment. After 4 years riding a Spyder I don't see any advantages to eco mode mileage or performance. Thanks for the video
I have found in my first 3,000 miles on my Spyder, the Eco mode is noticeable in stop and go conditions, not highway cruising. My throttle response isn't as aggressive and appears to limit the higher RPM's. My MPH is noticeably improved under stop and go conditions, especially with my wife riding along. You might want to try your experiment again under stop and go conditions.
I use eco mode in and around the town and or reversing down the drive as it appears more softer / sluggish so for me while im learning is a good thing in my view. Once i'm a little more confident i will turn it off and only turn it on in tight space when I have to do tricky monovers etc.
Do not believe all the crap you see on various forums, unless you want to believe that BRP is knowingly trying to damage their engines... come on now. really ??? Eco mode slightly changes the throttle response. What is your RPM at 70 mph in Eco Mode? What is your RPM at 70 mph in Normal Mode? Is there any significant difference... Nope. Eco mode throttle response mapping will simply be more on the gentle side vs normal mode. The RPM difference, at speed, will likely be pretty much the same, so you won't see a significant mpg difference. Any small improvement is due to the slightly more gentle acceleration when you twist the throttle. And, oh yeah, Eco mode helps new riders, with a signal when to upshift.
True that. Taught me how to steer and not lean. Get used to a brake pedal and upshifts with a display to remind the rider. Well done BRP. At 500 miles I took the training wheels off
I’ve found that you can put an additional 0.4 gallons into the fuel take after the I initial shut off of the pump. When I first bought my 2021 Can Am RT Limited I played with the ECO mode, and decided it didn’t increase my gas mileage significantly or increase it at all, whether on cruise control (which I use a lot) or not. The best gas mileage I’ve had with the bike was on a trip from SoCal to Woodenville, WA (which is east of Seattle), riding two up, plus gear for a 10 trip. Going up I averaged 30.9 mpg. But, going back I averaged almost 34 mpg. We did over 2,700 miles. I used the same route both ways. I joked with my wife that I had better gas mileage going from Woodenville, WA, to SoCal because we were basically going down hill to SoCal. The Spyder just doesn’t get great mpg. Prior to my RT I owned three BMW touring bikes, two K1200LTs (in-line 4s, 115hp) and a K1600GTL (in-line 6, 160hp) and all three bikes got better mpg. They need to buy their motors from BMW. The RT should easily get 37 to 40+ mpg, but it doesn’t. It’s not a deal breaker for me because I bought the bike for a specific reason. But, they need to put a little effort into improving gas mileage.
@@SpyderChrisYT I agree, it’s a great machine, and a great machine to take a long distance, multi-day trip on. It’s a very smooth, stable platform, that can carry a lot of gear.
All I noticed was that it just help with the gears other then that my 1330 cc spyder eats 7,5 l 100 km. Yes I'm european and use the only usable system. 😂😂😂 but I don't use sport mode neither so I feel that normal is good enough
I ride in ECO mode all the time. I have found on highway at highway speeds my mileage sucks bad .. but with Spyder rides with groups of Spyders at 63 to 65 it seems like I can ride all day long with 200 mile till empty on my gauges.
No, ECO mode doesn't make much of a difference. I tested it last year on the way to Florida and on the way home... ECO one way, regular another. The gas mileage was not significant. I'm not using ECO on my new model at all. As Spyder Wayne says, it's good for new riders.... But that's about it.
I'm new to the Spyder also and wanted to know if anyone can answer a question. Is it common for the fuel gage to fluctuate on the actual mileage driven? Ty
I think most opinions are that ECO mode saves on MPG, I don't think it saves anything, but that's just me. We'll see how that work for you. Your pencil saved you $44 for a new Show Chrome shock.
@@Randy-Bart Funny I had mine replaced under warranty on my 2020 RTL, both failed. Two trips to the dealer, 80 miles and two wasted days, oh yeah, have it replaced under warranty, great idea.
I shoot videos in groups at times and schedule them out in advance. The timing, the mileage, etc, doesn’t always synch. I need to organize this better.
Wrong It smooths the bike out at slower speeds also if you load on a trailer keep you from quick throttle. It's also great if you have a ride in a parade using Eco mode.
Shawn Smoak says not to use it he is a master technician so that's good enough for me and now I don't run my car in eco either. More Power.
I have never used Eco Mode I just ride it however feels right for the conditions. Just ride and be happy!

Eco Mode is more for in town driving it smooth the Spyder out more for slower speeds it takes the throttle jerk out at slow speeds.

You you owen and ride a can am. If not shut up.
I use ECO mode on backroads and stop and go traffic, once I’m on the highway I turn it off.
I use my eco mode. I’m not sure if it makes a difference but I still have great performance and 30+ mpg.

All highway driving F3 eco 36.9 mpg. Little sluggish but good enough performance for an old man.
That’s actually very good. 8m still testing varying riding conditions.

7,5 lit | 100 km = 32 miles/Gal. I used to use metric but unfortunately, I had to switch.

I haven’t tried it but will the pump click off like it does with a car when it’s close to full?
Yes, but you still have a half gallon or so more to fill after it clicks off.
Good deal
Eco mode makes me obey the speed limit 😮 sometimes
I also decided not to use ECO mode. I felt like it just changed the throttle feel a bit, with no real difference in mileage. At least the way I ride.
I’m now editing a video from today testing MPG in standard mode. 35 MPG. I can’t imagine why anyone would use ECO mode.
I'm new to the Spyder also and wanted to know if anyone can answer a question. Is it common for the fuel gage to fluctuate on the actual mileage driven? Ty
Yes! I posted a couple of videos recently with that very observation.
Thanks. I'll definitely check out your videos 👍

I’ve since posted another video on Eco mode. I’m really not a fan. You can find it in my last few videos.
@@SpyderChrisYT I will go and watch. Thanks
lol, I think ECO mode is more like Granny mode. but I have Pedal Box on my RTL22

Are you using premium fuel like 92 or 93 Octane? Just curious.
Yes, 91 or 93 depending on the gas station.
@SpyderChrisYT
What gas stations have 91?
All I can find is 89 and 93!
I use the eco mode and non eco mode mix. I get 35 mpg. When I'm on the highway i use eco mode, in town non eco mode.
I actually got better MPG without it. I did a follow up video showing my results. No more ECO mode for me. But I’m glad you get better results.

What octane gas to you use?
93 or 91.
eco mode is a joke. It does nothing. It just changes throttle response and thats it.
Eco mode only creates a loose throttle characteristic, nothing else
Eco mode just indicates when to shift. period. It doesn't do anything else. It's not like a car's eco mode. The mileage will be the same.
